Jon Heyman of SI.com explains that expectations for Johnny Damon were unrealistically high at the beginning of the offseason. Here's Heyman's latest on Damon and others:
- Tigers manager Jim Leyland is said to want Damon badly.
- Heyman hears that the Braves might have $6MM to spend.
- Chien-Ming Wang's agent says his client is still a week or so away from deciding where he'll sign. Competitors still expect the righty to sign an incentive-laden deal with the Nationals.
- We've heard that the Indians are considering Jermaine Dye; Heyman says he could play some first base in Cleveland.

Boras to Heyman: “You’re Fired!”

I think Boras is trying to distance himself from this mess and put the blame on Damon’s expectations and not his agenting.

so essientially the Braves traded Vasquez in order to sign Glaus and Hinkse and to sit on $6mil? Im not saying I dont like these additions, but you couldve kept JV and found a way to make the other numbers work

I agree, but if they can sign Damon, then Cabrera, Damon, Hinske, Glaus and minor leaguers for JV is a pretty good deal in my opinion.

if we do have 6mm, that doesn’t mean Frank will. That should also be saved for a possible mid-season acquisition.

At this late point in the offseason, all of a sudden Leyland wants Damon badly?

If the Braves want Damon, they better make an offer around 5-6 million over 1 year with some incentives, or say goodbye to Damon coming to Atlanta.

I’m not sure if the Braves even want him. Wren’s said he’s happy with the team as it is. Might as well keep 6 mil like NYBravosFan10 said for a mid-season pick-up and with Heyward comin soon.. We’re ok

love watching a boras client completely misjudge the market (and potentially be hurt by boras stalling on him to get holliday signed).

How did he misread the market when the guy hasn’t been signed yet. What if he signs a 2/15 deal with the Tigers? Is that misreading the market? We haven’t seen any confirmed offers that were much higher than that.
I think Damon and Boras looked at a guy like Abreu and realized that they are roughly the same player. Middling power, decent speed, bad in the outfield. The Angels gave $9m/year to Abreu. Is it a stretch on Damon/Boras’ part to think that Damon could net that same type of a deal?
For the record, the Angels did overpay with Abreu. Would have much rather let Abreu walk, collect the picks, and now go after a guy like Damon for a few million less.

if he signs a 2/15 deal with the tigers, the other owners should flog mike illich. if the other reported offers are one-year deals for less than $4-5m, why would you bid against yourself for 2/15? if he gets that, you have to wonder what boras has on illich.
as far as the abreu comparison, if he’d taken the yankees offer months ago, he’d have been in that ball park. but as other players signed (interesting that he really wasn’t pursuing the whole market until after holliday signed, eh?), his leverage has declined. and the only way he gets 2/15 is if some owner (illich?) is stupid enough to bid against himself. unless there’s some other big-money offer out there that nobody’s talking about, that’s a second year for $10+m to pry him away from the braves (or white sox or whoever). doesn’t make any sense. not that i’d put it past an owner, but that won’t make it any less stupid.

Reading Heyman’s post, I was truly amazed: I didn’t even see Boras’ lips move once.

I’d love to see us add Felipe Lopez if he would be willing to take a super-utility role for about 2-3M. If you don’t count filler types like Thurston or Diory Hernandez, we only have one MI/UTL type player in Infante and he would be overextended as a starter should Prado/Escobar go down. We went into last year with both Prado and Infante on the bench so I would guess Bobby would love to have another super utility player to utilize.

“Jim Leyland is said to want Damon badly.”
surely, there’s gotta be a better way of phrasing this 2 days before Valentines.

Heyman: “Damon does appear to be a good on-field fit for the Tigers”
Apparently, the Tigers have been desperately searching for an outfielder who CANNOT PLAY THE OUTFIELD.
Has anyone ever actually seen Jon Heyman and Scott Boras in the same room together?

Call me crazy. But what about Dye?
