Athletics Release Willy Taveras

By Tim Dierkes | February 9, 2010 at 12:10pm CDT

The Athletics released outfielder Willy Taveras, tweets MLB.com's Jane Lee.  Taveras had been designated for assignment on February 1st immediately after being acquired from the Reds along with Adam Rosales.  Taveras passed through Oakland as GM Billy Beane's way of facilitating the Rosales acquisition.

The A's ultimately acquired Jake Fox and Rosales.  The financial cost is the $4MM owed to Taveras, less $400K if he signs elsewhere as a free agent and less the $1MM the Cubs sent with Aaron Miles.  If Taveras signs somewhere the A's will have paid $2.6MM to get Fox and Rosales, while also giving up Jeff Gray, Ronny Morla, and Matt Spencer.

hes not that bad come on. Its got to be a big time injury that teams dont think he legs will come back from.

No, he was THAT BAD last season. He couldn’t hit anyone, his bunting was much more suspect than it used to be, and he can still steal bases but he never did it in a clutch situation. Most of the time when he got on at the beginning of the game he would sit at first through the first two outs and then steal 2nd only to be stranded there, or he would steal bases when the Reds were up a comfortable amount of runs… waaaaaaaay too timid on the basepaths

Taveras is a -0.3 WAR player the past two seasons and has posted a combined OPS of .584… his OPS+ the past two seasons combined is FIFTY-TWO.

Aside from the fact that he played plus defense in CF last season, yes, he has been entirely that bad.

Royals have too many players for the 25-man already. They cant add anyone unless its minor-league or comes after trading one of their extremely few tradable players.

That’s a damn shame, “speedy” low OBP players like this just don’t come around everyday. Should’ve held off signing Scotty Pods…

Well thanks for ripping us off A’s. The Reds could have kept him and traded him elsewhere. Well it happened. We got the good side of the deal, Aaron Miles and a minor leaguer. We chewed up most of his money and we can’t replace him with Miles now.

You can just resign him for league minimum now. If anything they did you a favor by eating 3MM for you.

Anybody got some dead space for a pinch runner?
I’m a ‘Stros fan and was sad to see Willy T go, but last year he really was awful.

Is Rosales really worth the extra 4 mil?

Far as I can tell the cost to the A’s for Rosales and Fox was $2.6 mil, plus three players.

one thing that can’t be discounted is the A’s HAVE to spend money. They have the lowest payroll in the AL this year (I believe as it stands now). Wtih Revenue sharing, they Had to spend money. That is why a team like Oakland can shell out 10 mil for Sheets, Eat bad contracts and such. Just an innovative way to eat up revenue sharing coin and garnering assets which can help your big league squad

Tim, exactly how much more money did it cost the A’s to trade Miles for Rosales and Taveras? (basically how much did Rosales end up costing the A’s, NOT including the 400k if T-Virus signs with another team?)

Here is how I am currently looking at it:

        $4M (Taveras) – $2.7M (Miles) = $1.3M – 1M (from Cubs) = $0.3K (300K)

        Is this right?

        Thanks for your time.

Where is this genius in Billy Beane..? The A’s have yet to be serious contenders. There are atleast 10 other 40 man rosters better than the Oakland’s What assets have they gathered that will actually help them become contenders? Never understood all the hype around this guy..

      Lets see

      Kouzmanoff
      Taylor
      Crisp
resigned duchscherer and cust for $5 mill combined pre incentives
      Sheets 10 million
resigned wuertz 2 yr /5.25 mill
      Traded for Fox/Rosales
The rest of their rotation Anderson/Braden/Cahill/Mazzaro/Gio are pre arby/league minimum.
The pitching and defense should be solid. Offense is an issue hopefully their next wave of prospects taylor, carter, cardenas, weeks, green (later on), donaldson can help the next couple years

They have the lowest payroll $55 million in the AL, unfortunately thats about $30-50+ mill less than the rest of their division.

After 2010 they’ll have an additional $40+ mill in contracts off their payroll with chavez, ellis, crisp ,sheets, duchscherer, cust or if they perform well enough july trade deadline trade bait among those players

Is it possible that Taveras is older than he actually says he is? I saw on Baseball Reference that he was signed by the Indians in 99, but I don’t know if he was drafted by them or if he defected or something. Either way, he looks like he’s done.

Creative deals by Beane, depending if Fox and Rosales are useful.
    2.6 mill payroll added
5-6 yrs of control of rosales/fox
gray- middle reliever who A’s had buried in their depth chart
morla- rule 5 eligible next season has never been out of short season leagues
spencer- might hurt later, but A’s also traded OF depth hairston/cunningham too.
I guess miles/taveras were sunk cost, they attempted to sign jamey caroll for almost 2 yr/5 million

No surprise here. I seriously doubted Taveras has ANY value whatsoever, and the fact BB couldn’t even get a bag of balls for him proves that.
