The Royals signed reliever Matt Herges to a minor league deal, according to a team press release. Herges, 40 in April, posted a 6.8 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, and 3.38 ERA in 34.6 innings for the Indians and Rockies last year. He logged another 28.3 innings at Triple A.
Herges is one of a slew of minor league signings made by Royals GM Dayton Moore so far this offseason. Check out the full list here.

Ugh, seriously?

I love it when people complain about minor league signings, because you KNOW they are just looking for something to complain about.

good move – along with Osuna, Rupe, Bullington, stockpile potentially decent arms on the cheap… much better than paying miliions for the same output (I’m lookin’ at you, Farny)

Herges, we have a problem.

Matt Herges is 40? I feel old.
I’m always for stockpiling bullpen arms though. Nothing wrong with hoping to catch lightning in a bottle on a MLC.

Famous for being traded to the Pirates for Chris Young (pitcher), then released the same year in spring training.

At least one of the many minor league signing will pan out.

I don’t think the “Ugh” was so much about the Herges MiLB deal as it was about the fact that the best we can do is Herges on an MiLB deal.
GMDM is trying to improve with speed and defense, and so has signed a bad baserunning, bad fielding OF (Podsednik), and poor OBP, bad fielding SS (Betancourt), a rickety old catcher who can’t hit, run or throw anymore (Kendall), and Brian Anderson, who doesn’t belong on a major league roster. Oh, and we can’t seem to find a spot for Callaspo, who was the second best overall hitter on the team last year.
Thus, “Ugh.”
