SATURDAY, 8:08pm: Kubatko reports that Baltimore is trying to deal Sarfate rather than lose him for nothing if another team makes a waiver claim. "Several teams" are interested in the reliever, according to Sarfate's agent.
WEDNESDAY, 3:39pm: The Orioles designated pitcher Dennis Sarfate for assignment to make room for Miguel Tejada, reports Roch Kubatko of MASN. Oddly enough, Sarfate came to the O's in the December '07 Tejada deal with the Astros.
Sarfate, 29 in April, struggled in 35.6 innings between the Majors and Triple A this year. He had shoulder surgery in September of '08 and a circulatory finger problem in the summer of '09. The injuries seemingly caused his mid-90s velocity to disappear, but Kubatko says Sarfate was hitting 97 recently in the Mexican Winter League.

Quite Ironic. They designated the guy who they got in the trade for Miguel Tejada in the first place.

Sarfate has always intrigued me. Good velocity, seemingly good breaking stuff. It’s the control that isn’t there. But size wise he’s very projectable. I wouldn’t mind seeing him turn up with Boston as an option from Pawtucket.
This is the type of guy Dave Duncan would turn into a 16 winner too.

Pirates, get em!

Sarfate is a reliever now.
When he was with the Brewers he was a pretty well documented headcase with a father who would go onto the fan boards to badmouth the organization and fans. The old man was a real odd duck who seemed to be micromanaging the son. Live arm but not much evidence of sense during the time he was in the Milwaukee org – a time during which they had several bad character guys who flamed out in the minors.

He did a few spot starts for the O’s but yeah, he’s definitely a reliever. Good arm but absolutely no control over it. I’m glad he will be someone else’s headache now.

hopefully he stays in the system to figure our his control issues. after that he is a pretty dominant reliever.
BIGPELF
mets go sign him for a minor league contract
sooperballz
They should send Matt Albers with him.

Miguel Angel Barajas
By the way, Leo Rosales was demoted as closer for Hermosillo and they gave the job to José Vargas instead of going with Dennis, maybe puting a red light on Sarfate.
