Some links for Wednesday night…
- The Mariners signed reliever Brandon League to a 2010 contract, according to a team press release. He'll get $1.08MM, writes Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times. That's just below the midpoint.
- Matt Eddy at Baseball America has this week's minor league transactions.
- Matthew Carruth of FanGraphs wants you to vote on the worst contract in baseball.
- Via Twitter, Alyson Footer notes that Jason Bourgeois, who was designated for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for Brett Myers, cleared waivers and accepted a trip to the minors.
- Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle tweets that the Giants are unlikely to sign any more players to Major League contracts. The Bengie Molina deal tapped them out.
- Marlins' team president David Sampson said that Dan Uggla will be the team's Opening Day second baseman, writes Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald. We also heard that there was no chance of a long-term deal for Josh Johnson this offseason, so take it with a grain of salt.
- Tom Haudricourt of The Journal News notes (via Twitter) that Brewers' GM Doug Melvin tried to trade for Doug Davis twice last season. Melvin got his man today.
- Anthony McCarron of The New York Daily News heard from a Mets' insider that the team could try to trade for Tim Hudson. That seems highly unlikely for a number of reasons, but mostly because Hudson signed an extension in November, has 10-and-5 no-trade rights, and the Braves already traded one veteran starter in Javier Vazquez this offseason.
- Here's the up to the minute 2010 draft order. The only two unsigned free agents left that will bring their former teams compensation are Joel Pineiro and Rod Barajas.

What do the Mets have that the Braves would want… Beltran… yeah, no matches at all.
drumzalicious
only person i would take from the Mets would be David Wright.
dodgers_suck
i’m content with what the giants did this off season offensively. they didn’t lose any players that had any impact. like randy winn. they have huff to platoon 1st. sanchez all year at 2nd(hopefully). and derosa in left, with schierholtz hopefully keeping his spot in right. with molina moving down the line up where he belongs, the giants should put out a line up that can win.
NL_East_Rivalry
Who pitches for the Giants? They didn’t even want Sanchez as their 5th pitcher because of his road numbers. Now Sanchez is their num 4 and they have no num 5 or money to spend? Can someone explain this to me?
Mark
Knowing Sabean, he probably would’ve overpaid for any starting pitcher on the market, so not signing a #5 starter was a good thing. Also, we could just get Bumgarner to pitch.
55saveslives
Who says they didn’t want Sanchez? They would have had Uggla if they gave up Sanchez which means they value him very much.
BleacherBumSF
one of the top pitching prospects in baseball Madison Bumgarner
there’s a good chance that if he has a good spring he will be the 5th starter
csg
Huddy is a 10/5 player and will not approve a trade out of ATL. His family and his charity are also there. They might have had interest if the Braves hadnt of resigned him. Plus the fact that the Braves will not move another starter. This is a rumor that has zero legs, shouldnt even really be mentioned
dodgers_suck
its not that they didn’t want him, he is nasty but he walks a lot of guys. he had the 4th lowest avg. it was like .204; something like that. we just wanted to get a bat like uggla and he was the guy that would have been expendable. we have a younger guy thats out 5th started in madison bumgarner who we don’t want to trade along with lincecum, cain and zito who can’t be traded because his contract.

Hudson…you’re making me foam at the mouth!
RiverKKiller999
And why in the world would we consider trading Hudson into our OWN division when we already traded Vasquez??This isn’t gonna go anywhere .Take it off the rumors list..
SC_Giants_28
Wast it schulman that said we were done making offensive moves too? either way, it would be nice to get one more surprise move at a cheap price, common sabean show us that you are getting better at this GM thing

Haha, Hudson to the Mets isn’t ‘highly unlikely’ realm it is in the ‘never going to happen, ever’ realm.
1. Hudson took less money to stay in Atlanta and is on record saying that he told his agents to take less than market value. So he doesn’t want to waive his 10-5 and can’t be lured by money to do so.
2. Wren just spent a ton of time and effort (and took a ton of grief) in trading Lowe or Vazquez FOR THE SOLE REASON that he signed Hudson to replace one of them. Wren would not trade him.
3. Wren has also said and has been reported more times that he is done, we have our team as it will be in ST.
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

Well, it did snow in GA this year, so never say never. Although, snowball’s chance in GA this happens.
oscarrobles
I once said this about Jake Peavy remaining a Padre… lol
dire straits
To be fair, the Braves are more than likely going to be in contention. The Padres, well, you know…

bwahaha. really? they think the braves would want to trade huddy to the mets?… as in they think theyd want to trade an affordable top of the rotation starter for… whatever they have? i think that rash of injuries last year is starting to creep its way into the mental health of the front office.
rainyperez
yeah Giants are done, looks like they’re going to look internally for a reliever it should be a interesting competitive season in the west
goldenglove002
Why is that Hudson to the Mets rumor still circulating? Thats like the Pirates saying they are interested in Ryan Braun
BleacherBumSF
no more Major League deals for the Giants but Eric Byrnes could be had on a Minor League deal
NYBravosFan10
Hudson traded to the Mets will happen…on the same day that Pujols is traded to the Cubs and Jeter is traded to the Red Sox. Omar Minaya may be dumb but he isn’t that dumb. Seeing as how they just lost out on their two biggest targets within the course of two days, you can pretty much pencil Ben Sheets into that rotation…unless they miss out on him too. Very likely.
mussels
where is lowery, really good giants pitcher 2 years ago?
drumzalicious
Hudson to the Mets? What the heck?
Really?
Who do we get in return? His initials better be D.W. and thats all i would take from the Mets
mussels
lowery giants #3 pitcher over 2 years ago, what happened?
GPBurdell
Even if Hudson was interested in moving, the Mets are in a position where their only real value players all have huge contracts. Who would the Braves even want? Beltran, Wright, Santana, Bay, F-Rod, Reyes, every single one of which makes more than Hudson. Of those guys, Beltran, Santana, and Bay are paid higher than the Braves would consider, F-Rod is over paid, and Reyes is at the end of his contract. Wright is the only player left and even his contract blows up in a year to $15 million. The Mets minor league system is also very weak.
I can’t imagine they get anything done unless it involves sending a lot of cash to Atlanta (either actual cash or taking Lowe’s full contract)
J M
After returning to form in the 2nd half last year Jeff Francour’s trade value has risen enough to warrant being traded for Tim Hudson and prospects
BaseballFan0707
…….
I’m pretty sure that ship has sailed.
GPBurdell
lol
Thanks. I needed that.
Guest 713
hilarious. exactly what i needed to start my day. keep ’em coming.
adammyst
The Marlins’ Team President is David Samson, not Sampson. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
BaseballFan0707
Seriously, as the article says, the Braves already traded a starter. They don’t have enough depth to be trading another.
maddog31
Lowry is coming back this year, I know he wanted a trade but not sure his status. He has been hurt the past two seasons.
drjayphd
So with Bourgeois going to the minors, does this mean Jerry Proles has a shot at cracking the 40-man roster as the fifth OF?
