The Red Sox lowered their offer to Jason Bay from four years to two years because they were "scared to death" of his knees, according to Peter Gammons. Here's the audio from WEEI and here's the transcript. The Mets were the only team to seriously pursue the left fielder, according to Gammons.
The Rangers are no longer a destination for Mike Lowell, since they now have Vladimir Guerrero. Gammons mentions the Indians as a possible fit for Lowell, but points out that Cleveland has "no money" and notes that the team's budget limits the chances we'll see a deal.

I can hear it,can you? “Charge”!!!!!!
That is Gammons, leading the way in bashing a player, for not signing with the Sawx.

Gammons is acting like a ex physio girl that had there hearts broken.Get over it Bay signed with the Mets end of story

Ok already!! Man, what’s with Peter Gammons and the Bay thing. It’s like a horrible broken record, playing over and over. This is twice as bad as Mazz’s crush on Tex last year.
Colt Seavers
Gammons is still running his mouth about Jason Bay.
Let it go Peter. Let it go.

Anyone know what Lowell is making in 2010? Salary, that is, not breakfast.
BIGPELF
like 12 millions

I was going to flag this comment until I realized it is true.

FYI: Gammons did not bring this up. It was brought up by the hosts of the show he was appearing on.

I would love to see Lowell in STL on the cheap. Trade away one of the 5 pitchers competing for the fifth start spot, I suggest PJ Walters, with the Sox eating about 8-10 million.

thats ok send mikey to cleveland we’ll pay the money and give us masterson back!!!!
HoneyNutIchiro
With Boston willing to pay most of his salary you’d think some team would take a chance.
Might not a full-time guy any more but still has some pop & tons of experience.
Deanezag
a team will, but regardless how minor his thumb surgery may be, you cant trade for him until you see him healthy and hitting in ST.
Bernaldo
I’ve thought that Lowell would be perfect for the Twins. Right handed bat with some pop and a good glove. From what I’ve read, he is a good guy in the clubhouse as well. If the thumb injury is healed and the Red Sox are willing to move him to save some salary, I think this would be an ideal acquisition. I’d much rather pay Lowell $3 million (Red Sox paying the rest) to play 3B than Hudson at 2B.

Just out of curiosity, to those who think Lackey’s contract was a mistake, would you choose Lackey or Burnett? Both have similar contracts (disregard Lackey’s 6th year clause), spend time in the DL and when healthy they have great stuff.
Deanezag
to be fair AJ is coming of back to back 200+ IP seasons, while Lackey has had 2 back to back seasons of 160-170 IP and the most recent injury history.
they are pretty much the same pitcher, but both are overpaid.
Burnett: 244 GS, 3.84 ERA, 100-85, 1.299 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, 110 ERA+
Lackey: 233 GS, 3.81 ERA, 102-71, 1.306 WHIP, 7.2 K/9, 117 ERA+

Lackey. But the contract has NO 6th year. The League minimum clause affects the 5th guranteed year of the contract.
Wek
I just went by what a poster said, apologize for the mistake.
Rays_Sox
The contract does have a 6th year option and does not affect the salary in the 5th year. Look it up on Cots.

As a Yankee fan, I’d say Lackey (even though Burnett HAS been healthier over the last two seasons). I just think Lackey will be more effective going forward – however, while I don’t think either contract is fantastic by any means, I don’t think they are nearly as bad as some people make them out to be.

Gammons is a respectable writer and kudos to him for being in that Hall of Fame (though I personally don’t like a lot of his stuff)…
…but are there any other writers coming out and saying Bay’s knees are that bad? I haven’t seen any. Maybe I’m missing it? I don’t really believe Gammons on this one.
Steve_in_MA
I’m not defending Gammons by any means, but Bay’s consistently deteriorating UZR/150 is most likely indicative of some type of knee problems. His range has been awful since his last year in Pittsburgh, and interestingly, playing in the small box of left at Fenway didn’t improve the outlook. Going on that evidence, and not Gammons’ spouting, I’d say there’s likely something to it.

i think everyone is missing the point here regarding whether lackey is overpriced or not. Is he overpriced? yes. but the reason is because he was the top free agent pitcher available this year. Knowing this, he could demand big money whether he is worth it or not. if he was a free agent next year with other pitchers such as cliff lee, brandon webb, maybe josh beckett and dontrelle willis (haha), he would not have gotten as much as this year.
letsgobucs
Jason Bay was a nice player, but he is not worth the money he got. Playing in Boston had him performing way over his head, if the Mets struggle and are out of it come midseason, the real Bay will show….K’s K’s K’s and leaving small villages of RISP. I was shocked he played as well as he did lthe last 1 1/2 seasons. His real value is somewhere between 2009 and his 2007 campaign. Probably 30/100/.250 with around 150 K’s. I don’t know if thats worth 15m/y.
tals23
The Mets have had two independent doctors look at Bay’s knees and both said that there were absolutely no problems and that he was 100percent healthy…I have a ton of respect for Gammons but this time I think he fell victim to the Red Sox propaganda machine….they had no legitimate reason for not re-signing Bay so they concocted this story to appease their fans and Gammons became the messenger

First off – Bay was not as good as everyone claims that he is. He isn’t worth the $15.5mil over 4 years that he got from the Mets. If you ask me – he’s worth about $12-13mil over 3 years. I agree with Theo on letting Bay ride. His defense was absolutely terrible, and to be bad in LF at Fenway, you have to be a very bad defender. He will get absolutely killed at Citi, and I wouldn’t be surprised if his knees give out playing in the deep LF in NY.
