Red Sox To Sign Scott Schoeneweis

5:45pm: Schoeneweis will earn $500K if he makes the Red Sox' big league roster, according to Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe (via Twitter). Benjamin notes that the deal is similar to the one Alan Embree signed with Boston last week.

3:38pm: The Red Sox agreed to sign lefty reliever Scott Schoeneweis to a minor league deal, according to a team press release. The Brewers released Schoeneweis Tuesday after signing him to a minor league deal last month. Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that Schoeneweis can opt out of the deal on April 15th if he isn't on the 25-man roster (Twitter link).

Schoeneweis, 36, pitched 24 innings for the D'Backs last year, posting a 7.12 ERA with 5.3 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9. His rate stats were markedly better against lefties in 2009 (7.1 K/9, 3.2 BB/9), though the sample size is small. The Red Sox expect him in camp tomorrow.

It's been a productive day for the Red Sox, who released Brian Shouse this morning and traded for Kevin Frandsen and signed Schoeneweis almost immediately after Nick Cafardo reported the team was looking at infielders and relievers.

Phillies Seek Rotation Depth

The Phillies are looking to add starting pitching, but aren't eager to guarantee anyone roster spot, according to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News. Ideally, the Phillies would find an out-of-options pitcher or someone who has an out clause in his contract.

"If a player like that comes available, we'll have our eyes and ears open on it,'' Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. 

Amaro says pitching depth is a concern for the Phillies, so he's looking to find some. Boof Bonser and Dana Eveland are out-of-options arms the Phillies could consider. They haven't been linked to the recently-released Chad Gaudin so far.

The Phillies will also look for bullpen depth, writes Murphy. The Brewers recently released Scott Schoeneweis, though Amaro would probably not guarantee the left-hander a job. 

Brewers Release Scott Schoeneweis

The Brewers released lefty reliever Scott Schoeneweis, reports Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.  Schoeneweis had signed a minor league deal on February 9th, with hopes of complementing Mitch Stetter as the team's second bullpen lefty.  Schoeneweis was upset by the release, and doesn't feel he should have to prove himself again because his wife died last year from a drug overdose.  He sounded off further to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

Schoeneweis, 36, handled lefties well for the Mets back in '08.  He joins free agent southpaw relievers Ron Mahay, Glendon Rusch, and Ron Villone.

Brewers Notes: Edmonds, Fielder, Schoeneweis

Let's check out some Brewers tidbits courtesy of MLB.com's Adam McCalvy..

  • An article from Anthony Witrado of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel seemed to indicate that Jim Edmonds might not want to play in 2010.  However, McCalvy writes that Edmonds reiterated his desire to make the squad in Milwaukee.  He adds that it would be something of a surprise if Milwaukee didn't offer the 39-year-old their final roster spot.
  • In McCalvy's view, it is unlikely that Milwaukee will deal Prince Fielder mid-season.  As he points out, contract negotiations would first have to fall apart before the club would even consider such a move.  If they do look to move him, expect them to do so next offseason.
  • McCalvy also writes that three players in camp with the Brewers can elect for free agency if they are not added to the 40-man roster: the aforementioned Edmonds, catcher Matt Treanor, and lefty Scott Schoeneweis.  Treanor is battling with George Kottaras for the backup catcher position and the club may not have room for Treanor in the minor leagues.  Meanwhile, in the event that Schoeneweis doesn't make the cut, he has said that he is unwilling to accept a minor league assignment.

Brewers Sign Scott Schoeneweis

The Brewers signed Scott Schoeneweis to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training, tweets MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. The lefthander will earn $800K if he makes the Brewers' roster. The D'Backs, who traded for Schoeneweis last winter, decided not to offer him arbitration after the season.

Schoeneweis struggled through the 2009 campaign, dealing with the death of his wife and pitching just 24 innings. His stats (5.3 K/9, 4.9 BB/9, 7.12 ERA) were not good, but the Brewers will likely give the 36-year-old the chance to become their second lefty reliever, tweets McCalvy.

As McCalvy noted last week, 24-year-old Rule 5 draft pick Chuck Lofgren could make the Brewers as a left-handed reliever. The Brewers will have to offer Lofgren back to the Indians if he doesn't make the team. He pitched 98.1 innings at AAA last year, striking out 5.7 K/9 and walking 3.0 K/9.

Diamondbacks Decline Arb On Free Agents

MLB.com's Steve Gilbert tweets that Arizona will not be offering arbitration to free agents Doug Davis, Scott Schoeneweis or Chad Tracy.  Davis (a Type B) is the only ranked free agent of the trio.  Gilbert blogged yesterday that the D-Backs were likely to pass on making Davis an offer since the team didn't want to risk bringing him back in 2010 at a higher salary.

Diamondbacks Seeking Veteran Reliever

The Diamondbacks could have two potential holes to fill in their rotation depending on what happens with Doug Davis and Brandon Webb after the season, but GM Josh Byrnes also wants to add a veteran reliever according to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.

"We've had our share of adversity this year, and in the bullpen it's not going to be a smooth ride for six months," Byrnes said. "We'd like to have people who can sort of understand that a bad game is going to happen but not let it happen too often and set an example that way."

Arizona's pen was supposed to be anchored by Chad Qualls, Scott Schoeneweis, Tony Pena and Jon Rauch, but Rauch and Pena were traded, Qualls battled injury, and Schoeneweis dealt with the unfortunate passing of his wife. The foursome combined for a 4.46 ERA in 163.1 IP for the D-Backs this season.

Looking the list of available free agents this offseason, could Bobby Howry or Octavio Dotel make sense? Maybe a Brandon Lyon reunion? 

Shoeneweis Traded For Connor Robertson

The Mets acquired 27-year-old righty Connor Robertson from the Diamobdbacks for Scott Schoeneweis and cash considerations. The Mets will pay $1.6MM of the $3.6MM Schoeneweis is owed in 2009, according to ESPN.com.

Robertson has made nine big league appearance with the A’s and D-Backs, including six this year with Arizona. He has an ERA of 2.82 and 24 saves in 305 minor league innings.

Schoeneweis had a 3.34 ERA in 56.2 innings for the Mets in 2008.

Cubs, Mets Talking Marquis Trade

According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Cubs and Mets are talking about a Jason Marquis trade.  The Cubs will have to eat salary, unless they follow Heyman’s suggestion to take Scott Schoeneweis.

On Saturday, Dan Graziano said the Mets rejected an offer of Marquis for Aaron Heilman. Of course, Heilman is a Mariner now.
