Twins Outright Ryan Jensen

Right-hander Ryan Jensen went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment by the Twins, tweets Dan Hayes of The Athletic. He’ll remain in the organization but has been sent outright to Triple-A St. Paul and is no longer on the 40-man roster. Jensen will be in big league camp as a non-roster invitee this spring.

The Twins have to be pleased with the manner in which the Jensen sequence played out. Minnesota claimed the former first-rounder off waivers from Miami last month but designated him for assignment last week in order to claim another righty reliever who’d been DFA’ed: Daniel Duarte. Jensen had bounced from the Cubs to the Mariners to the Marlins via waivers since his original DFA back in August, but the Twins succeeded in passing him through waivers and will now be able to retain him as Triple-A depth.

Now 26 years old, Jensen was the No. 27 overall pick in the 2019 draft. In 2023, he split the year between Double-A and Triple-A, working to a combined 5.32 earned run average in 64 1/3 innings of work. He operated primarily out of the bullpen, his first season doing so after spending the first few years of his career as a starting pitcher. He sports an overall 4.42 ERA with an above-average 26% strikeout rate and ugly 14.5% walk rate in his minor league career.

Jensen has a mid-90s heater, plus ground-ball rates, above-average strikeout rates and a pair of minor league options remaining. If the Twins can get him to rein in his command troubles, he has the makings of a quality reliever, but that’s a significant “if” based on how his career has panned out thus far.

Twins Claim Daniel Duarte, Designate Ryan Jensen

The Twins claimed right-hander Daniel Duarte off waivers from the Rangers, per announcements from both clubs. In order to open a spot on the 40-man roster, Minnesota designated fellow righty and fellow waiver claim Ryan Jensen for assignment.

Duarte, 27, made his big league debut with the 2022 Reds but pitched only 2 2/3 innings that year due to inflammation in his elbow. He was healthier and posted generally solid run-prevention numbers in 2023, totaling 31 2/3 innings of 3.69 ERA ball for Cincinnati. That earned run average masks some much shakier K/BB numbers, however. Duarte has fanned a well below-average 16.7% of his MLB opponents and walked an unsightly 15.3% of them. He’ll need to improve one or both of those areas in order to stick in the big leagues.

That said, there’s reason to hope for improvement. Duarte has fanned 26.8% of his opponents at the Triple-A level, and while his 11.6% walk rate there is still too high, it’s a far sight better than his big league mark to date. He’s averaged a strong 95.7 mph on his heater, and scouting reports on the right-hander tout his plus slider. Duarte has a minor league option remaining, so he can be an up-and-down arm for the Twins this season if they hang onto him for the remainder of the offseason and into the 2024 campaign.

That didn’t happen, as Seattle claimed him on waivers. He’s since bounced to the Marlins and Twins via the waiver wire, and he’ll now spend no more than a week waiting to learn his next stop. The Twins have seven days to trade Jensen or attempt to pass him through outright waivers.

But he’s also been designated for assignment thrice in the past six months and claimed by a new club each time, so there’s a decent chance another team will scoop him up in hopes of tapping into some of the former first-rounder’s latent potential.

Twins Claim Ryan Jensen From Marlins

The Twins announced that they have claimed right-hander Ryan Jensen from the Marlins. The latter club designated him for assignment two weeks ago. DFA limbo normally only lasts a week but the clock is paused for the week from Christmas to New Year’s Day. Minnesota’s 40-man roster count is now at 38.

Jensen, 26, now joins his fourth organization, though he still hasn’t made his major league debut. He was drafted by the Cubs with a first-round pick, 27th overall, in 2019. As he climbed the minor league ladder, he posted some mediocre results, largely due to control issues. The Cubs nonetheless added him to their 40-man roster in November of 2022 to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. His struggles continued in 2023, which put him into the waiver carousel. Between August and today, he has gone to the Mariners, Marlins and now Twins via waiver claims from each club.

He was moved from the rotation to the bullpen this year, which didn’t lead to immediate results. He started the year in the Double-A rotation in the Cubs’ system, got moved to the bullpen and then bumped up to Triple-A. He posted an earned run average of 5.06 at that level between the Cubs and Mariners, walking 20.1% of batters faced in the process. He has walked 14.5% of batters faced in his minor league career overall.

For the Twins, they had a few open roster spots and will take a flier on the former first-round pick to see if they can help him harness his stuff. Despite the free passes, he’s also struck out a strong 25.9% of batters faced in his minor league career overall. He still has a couple of options remaining and can be kept in the minors until he shows some progress.

Marlins Acquire Roddery Muñoz From Pirates

The Marlins announced that they have acquired right-hander Roddery Muñoz from the Pirates in exchange for cash considerations, with fellow righty Ryan Jensen designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Muñoz was designated for assignment last week as the Bucs opened a roster spot for their acquisitions of Rowdy Tellez and Edward Olivares. Alex Stumpf of DK Pittsburgh Sports first relayed that Muñoz would be heading to Miami and Christina De Nicola of MLB.com was among those to relay the full slate of moves.

Muñoz, 24 in April, has never pitched for the Pirates or any major league team. He was a prospect with Atlanta and had a solid 2022 campaign, tossing 100 1/3 innings between High-A and Double-A. His 4.66 earned run average for that year doesn’t jump off the page, but he struck out 26.9% of batters faced while walking 9.5%. That got him a roster spot in November of last year, to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft.

But his results backed up in 2023 and he went to the Nationals and Pirates on waiver claims in July and December, respectively. He tossed 78 minor league innings on the year overall with a 5.42 ERA, striking out 23% of opponents but also walking 15.1% of them. He is still young and has a couple of options, so the Marlins will add him as some optionable starting depth.

The club has a rotation mix that currently consists of Jesús Luzardo, Eury Pérez, Braxton Garrett, Edward Cabrera, Trevor Rogers, Max Meyer, Ryan Weathers and others. Relievers A.J. Puk and George Soriano will reportedly be stretched out in the spring to see if they can help. There have been rumors of some members in that group receiving trade interest, which doesn’t necessarily mean the Marlins are looking to make a deal but Muñoz will give them some extra depth in either case.

As for Jensen, 26, he is somewhat similar in that he has bounced around to various clubs without making a major league appearance. A first-round pick of the Cubs in 2019, he racked up some decent strikeout numbers on his way up the minor league ladder but also gave out walks at a high frequency.

The Cubs added him to their 40-man roster just over a year ago to keep him out of the Rule 5 but his results dipped in 2023. He had a 5.31 ERA after six Double-A starts and was moved to the bullpen. That transition didn’t lead to vastly improved results and he wound up on waivers in August, claimed by the Mariners. He ultimately tossed 64 1/3 innings on the year at Double-A and Triple-A between the organizations of the Cubs and the Mariners. He had a 5.32 ERA in that time, striking out 25.1% of opponents but also walking 17.4%.

The Mariners designated him for assignment in November. The Marlins put in a claim but have now bumped him off the roster less than a month later. They will have a week to work out a trade or try to pass him through waivers. The control has been an issue but he’s a former first-round pick with strikeout stuff and two option years remaining.

The Marlins have claimed righty Ryan Jensen off waivers from the Mariners, the team announced. Seattle designated him for assignment last week after acquiring Seby Zavala and Carlos Vargas from the D-backs in the trade sending Eugenio Suarez to Arizona. Miami’s 40-man roster now has 38 players.

Jensen, 26, was the No. 27 overall pick by the Cubs back in 2019 but hasn’t made his big league debut. Command issues have plagued him throughout his minor league tenure, and the Cubs placed him on waivers shortly after the trade deadline, surely hopeful of sneaking him through in order to retain him without committing a 40-man roster spot. That didn’t happen, as Seattle scooped him up for what will go down as a brief tenure.

In parts of four minor league seasons, Jensen has a 4.42 ERA with a solid 26% strikeout rate but an untenable 14.5% walk rate. His strike-throwing struggles have only mounted as he’s climbed the minor league ladder. Like many prospects, Jensen was surely impacted adversely by the canceled 2020 minor league season, but his command troubles were present even before that lost season; Jensen walked more than 10% of his college opponents and issued 14 free passes in 12 innings of Low-A ball in 2019 following that draft selection.

Jensen has a mid-90s heater, plus ground-ball rates, above-average strikeout rates and a pair of minor league options remaining, so it’s not a surprise to see clubs continue to take a flier on him. He’s a former first-round pick who’s drawn plenty of praise for his athleticism, but he’s a clear project for the Marlins rather than someone on whom they’ll be relying to fill a key role next season. Miami has space on the roster for now, but once they fill the 40-man, Jensen is the type of fringe 40-man name who could again find himself in DFA jeopardy if the Fish feel they need to free up some more space.

Mariners Designate Ryan Jensen For Assignment

The Mariners announced that they have designated right-hander Ryan Jensen for assignment. The M’s needed an extra roster spot after acquiring right-hander Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala in exchange for third baseman Eugenio Suárez, a trade you can read more about here.

The timing from the M’s is unfortunately impolite, as Jensen’s 26th birthday is tomorrow. The Mariners claimed him off waivers from the Cubs in August but kept him on optional assignment. Between the two clubs, he tossed 64 1/3 innings in the minors on the year, split between Double-A and Triple-A. He had a 5.32 earned run average over that time, striking out 25.1% of opponents but giving out walks at an alarming rate of 17.4%.

Despite a rough 2023 campaign, Jensen could garner interest from other clubs. He is a former first-round pick, having been selected 27th overall by the Cubs in 2019. Walks have been an issue for him since then but he’s generally gotten good amounts of strikeouts and ground balls. He still has a couple of option years and some club with an roster spot could perhaps try to help him better harness his stuff while keeping him in the minors.

The M’s will have a week to try to work out a trade or pass Jensen through waivers. He doesn’t have three years of service time or a previous career outright, meaning he would have to stick with the M’s if he cleared waivers, though without occupying a spot on the 40-man roster.

Mariners Claim Ryan Jensen, Release Matt Festa

August 9: The Mariners announced that Festa has indeed cleared waivers and become a free agent.

August 8, 9:56pm: Festa’s transaction log at MLB.com indicates he has been placed on release waivers, as required. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll be a free agent later in the week.

3:20pm: The Mariners announced a series of transactions today, claiming right-hander Ryan Jensen off waivers from the Cubs and recalling righty Ryder Ryan from Triple-A. Jensen will report to Triple-A Tacoma. Righty Bryan Woo was placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation, retroactive to August 5, while righty Matt Festa was designated for assignment in corresponding moves.

Jensen, 25, was a first-round pick of the Cubs, getting selected 27th overall in 2019. He quickly became considered one of the top 10 prospects in the club’s system though his stock has fallen since then thanks to some mediocre results.

After the pandemic wiped out the minor leagues in 2020, Jensen split 2021 between High-A and Double-A with a 4.16 ERA. Last year, he made 17 Double-A starts with a 4.25 ERA, striking out 23.2% of batters faced while walking 15.1% of them. Nonetheless, the Cubs still had enough belief in him to give him a 40-man roster spot in November, to protect him from being selected in the Rule 5 draft.

Here in 2023, things haven’t gone much better. He made six Double-A starts at the beginning of the year but had a 5.31 ERA in those. In early May, he was moved to the bullpen and has since been promoted to Triple-A, but he has a combined 6.06 ERA in 32 2/3 innings since that time. He has struck out 26.2% of opponents since that bullpen move but given free passes at a 17.7% rate.

It had not been publicly reported that the Cubs removed Jensen from their roster, but they evidently tried to quietly sneak him through waivers with the M’s swooping in to snap him up. They will presumably try to get him to rein in his recent control issues and get him back on a good track.

In order to grab Jensen, the M’s are risking losing Festa, who has now been removed from the roster. He has 89 major league appearances from 2019 to the present season, posting a 4.32 ERA in those. He struck out 29.2% of batters faced last year but also allowed 10 home runs and finished the year with a 4.17 ERA.

Here in 2023, he’s spent most of the season in Triple-A, with a 0.53 ERA in 34 innings. That’s come with a .114 batting average on balls in play and 91.9% strand rate, both of which are unsustainable. His 21.9% strikeout rate and 12.5% walk rate are both subpar, leading to a 4.81 FIP at that level.

According to his transactions tracker at MLB.com, he was placed on the minor league injured list last week. Since injured players can’t be placed on outright waivers and the trade deadline has passed, Festa should be released in the coming days. He’ll be out of options next year but has less than two years of service time, meaning he could be controlled for five future seasons by a club that gives him a roster spot.

Ryan, 28, was just added to the club’s 40-man roster last week. Despite getting that roster spot, they kept him in the minors initially though he will now get a chance to make his major league debut. He’s thrown 40 2/3 innings in Triple-A this year with a 3.54 ERA, 23.3% strikeout rate, 8.7% walk rate and 46% ground ball rate.

As for Woo, the severity of his injury isn’t known, but this sheds some light on the earlier report that the M’s are promoting pitching prospect Emerson Hancock. It had been speculated by some that the club could potentially use a six-man rotation for a while, but now it seems a more straightforward situation where Hancock will step in for Woo.

Cubs Add Four Players To 40-Man Roster

The Cubs have added four players to their roster in advance of the Rule 5 protection deadline: outfielders Brennen Davis and Kevin Alcantara, as well as right-handers Ben Brown and Ryan Jensen.

Davis, 23, rated as the Cubs’ top prospect heading into the season and projected to make his MLB debut this year as the team’s regular center fielder.  Prior to the season, Baseball America ranked him as the 16th best prospect in baseball.  Instead, Davis hit the IL in May with what The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney later called “mysterious sciatic pain,” which required back surgery in June and knocked him out for more than three months.  The Cubs had Davis participating in the Arizona Fall League, but had to pull him due to back tightness.  Cubs vice president of player development Jared Banner recently told reporters including Mooney that Davis is expected to be ready for spring training.  Regardless, the Cubs figure to be in the market for short-term help in center after primarily using Christopher Morel and Rafael Ortega at the position in 2022.

Alcantara, 20, was the main prize in the deal sending Anthony Rizzo to the Yankees last summer.  Perhaps his successful season in Low-A can help soften the blow for Cubs fans on a day that Rizzo re-upped with the Yankees for at least two more years.  MLB.com currently rates Alcantara as the Cubs’ third-best prospect, with 55 grades for most of his tools.  Baseball America says he has “as much upside as anyone in the Cubs system.”  Look for him to start 2023 in High-A.

Brown, 23, was drafted by the Phillies in the 33rd round out of high school back in 2017.  The Cubs flipped veteran reliever David Robertson to the Phillies at the trade deadline this year to add Brown to their system.  Brown had a 35.4 K% in High-A for the Phillies, and held strong at 32.1% in Double-A for the Cubs.  At the time, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said, “Brown is probably the one that hurt the most. We like him a lot, but you can’t protect everybody.”  The Cubs reportedly aim to have him add a new pitch this winter.  If Brown succeeds at the upper levels of the minors next year, he could see big league time.

Jensen, 24, was the Cubs’ first round pick in 2019 under the Theo Epstein regime.  He struggled mightily with his control in 17 Double-A starts this year.  After walking over 18% of batters faced over his first five starts, the Cubs “recommended to him the best course of action was to make some changes to his arm action down in Arizona,” according to Banner.  After that time away from the Smokies on the “development list,” Jensen came back and still walked over 13% of hitters.  As Mooney and Sahadev Sharma put it, “the command improved enough for the Cubs to protect Jensen and his electric arsenal.”
