The Mets have signed catcher Raul Chavez to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training, reports ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin (Twitter link).
Chavez, who turns 38 in March, last played in the majors in 2009, posting a .631 OPS in 168 plate appearances for Toronto. He spent last season catching for the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate. The Mets will be Chavez's eighth franchise in a pro career that began in 1990.

The Blue Jays have signed catcher Ramon Castro to a one-year deal worth nearly $1MM, sources tell Jorge Arangure of ESPN.com (via Twitter). In 57 games split between the Mets and White Sox in '09, the 33-year-old hit .219/.292/.406 with 7 HRs.
One has to wonder why the Jays have decided to ink three catchers in the last week, having already signed John Buck and re-signed Raul Chavez.

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed Joey Gathright and Raul Chavez to minor league deals, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.
The Blue Jays just non-tendered Chavez yesterday, so it didn't take long for them to get him back off the market. As for Gathright, his agent denied earlier in the week that the speedy outfielder had signed with the Jays. According to Bastian though, the deal is now in place. Both players will receive spring training invites.
Bastian also tweets that the Jays agreed to terms with arbitration-eligible players Jose Bautista ($2.4MM) and Dustin McGowan ($500K).
