The Orioles outrighted right-hander Mark Worrell to Triple-A after he cleared waivers, according to MASNsports.com's Roch Kubatko (on Twitter). The 28-year-old appeared in four games for the Orioles, who signed him as a free agent in February. Worrell has a 3.65 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.2 BB/9 in 37 innings at Triple-A this year.

The O's are unlikely to make a move with Alfredo Simon until February 26th, the mandatory date for all players to report to Spring Training, writes Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun. After being named as the primary suspect in a murder and denied bail in the Dominican Republic, Simon probably won't be able to join the club by that date. Once that date passes, Baltimore can move the reliever to the restricted list, freeing up a spot on the 40-man roster.
Baltimore has signed a trio of free agent pitchers to minor league deals according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. The club reached deals with right-handers Chris Jakubauskas and Mark Worrell as well as lefty James Houser. Houser, who was tabbed by the Rays in the second-round of the 2003 draft, turned in a 3.67 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 for the Marlins' Triple-A affiliate in 2010. The Orioles now have a handful of interesting pitchers in their farm system after signing Clay Rapada and Nick Bierbrodt last week.

The Mariners released former MLB reliever Mark Worrell, according to the Pacific Coast League's transactions page. They signed the right-hander earlier in the month and assigned him to the minor leagues.

Mariners Sign Mark Worrell

The Mariners signed right-handed reliever Mark Worrell, the team confirmed to MLBTR. The 27-year-old appeared in four games for the 2008 Cardinals and was sent to San Diego along with Luke Gregerson in the Khalil Greene trade. Gregerson has since become one of the best relievers in the league, but Worrell has yet to establish himself in the majors.

Worrell had Tommy John surgery in March of 2009 and missed the entire season. The Padres non-tendered him last winter, before re-signing him to a minor league deal. But after Worrell posted a 5.45 ERA in 25 Triple A appearances, the Padres released him last month. Worrell posted 9.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in Triple A Portland this year, so he may have re-discovered his pre-Tommy John form. Worrell's minor league resume includes a career 3.21 ERA and three times as many strikeouts as walks. He began his Mariners career by pitching a scoreless inning for Triple A Tacoma.

Russell Branyan, Garrett Atkins and Gary Matthews Jr. have been making headlines at the major league level, but some under-the-radar moves have been completed, too. Matt Eddy of Baseball America has the latest minor league transactions for June 14th-21st:

The Padres released right-hander Mark Worrell, who had been pitching in Triple A. His 5.45 ERA isn't pretty, but his 9.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 suggest that the 27-year-old could contribute on a team whose bullpen is a little thinner than San Diego's.
The Mariners released Ramon Vazquez, who appears to have signed with the Astros. The M's picked Vazquez up soon after the Pirates released him this spring, but the infielder wasn't the bargain pickup Jack Zduriencik was hoping for; Vazquez posted a .599 OPS at Triple A.
The Mariners signed David Winfree not long after the Yankees released him. The 24-year-old has posted a .700 OPS while playing first base, left and right at Triple A in 2010.

Padres Sign Mark Worrell

The San Diego Padres have signed Mark Worrell to a minor league contract, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com.

The 26-year-old right-hander was non-tendered by the Padres last month, after he missed the 2009 season following Tommy John surgery. Worrell was initially acquired by San Diego last winter, in the deal that sent Khalil Greene to St. Louis.

Padres Looking For Relievers

According to ESPN.com's Buster Olney the Padres are aggressively looking for relief help. They could fill as many as four bullpen spots with pitchers they pick up through trades or waivers.

As Dan Hayes of the North County Times reports, reliever Mark Worrell will miss the season with Tommy John surgery, so the Padres are working with one less reliever than expected. Hayes spoke with GM Kevin Towers and heard it's doubtful the Padres will sign a free agent reliever. Instead, Towers says he's "talking with GM's and finding out who's on the bubble to make clubs."

Earlier in the week Jayson Stark wrote that the Padres were in the mix for Will Ohman, but his asking price of $1.75MM could exceed the San Diego budget.

Cards Interested In Victor Diaz

Walt Jocketty and the Cardinals are currently mulling over various options to add an outfield bat, and one player who is definitely on the radar is Victor Diaz.

The 24 year-old Diaz had a fine year in 2005 between Triple A and the Majors. However, after losing the Mets’ right field battle to Xavier Nady this year Diaz has become the odd man out. He’s stumbled to a .245/.310/.371 line in Triple A and his stock is at an all-time low. Still, Diaz has shown 25 HR power and was projected to hit .265/.323/.469 for the Mets by Baseball Prospectus’s PECOTA system.

New York doesn’t have much use for Diaz, and one player they like is 24 year-old righthander Mark Worrell in the Cardinals’ system. Worrell uses an unorthodox, sometimes sidearm delivery to retire hitters. He did a fine job as a closer in A ball last year, but the jump to Double A hasn’t been so kind. Worrell has 15 saves and a 1.28 WHIP, but he also owns a 5.27 ERA. Walks and home runs have been a problem.

It’s a swap that makes sense – a couple of minor leaguers who have not met expectations this year. My Mets source tells me that discussions are ongoing.
