Diamondbacks Outright Konnor Pilkington

The D-Backs sent left-hander Konnor Pilkington through outright waivers, according to the transaction tracker at MLB.com. He went unclaimed after being designated for assignment last Friday.

Pilkington, 25, has spent a little more than two months in the Arizona organization. The Snakes purchased his contract from the Guardians on May 1, a few days after Cleveland designated him for assignment while promoting top prospect Tanner Bibee. The D-Backs kept Pilkington on optional assignment to Triple-A Reno since acquiring him, but he’s had a tough time in the brutal Pacific Coast League setting for pitchers.

Through 11 starts and 39 2/3 innings with the Aces, the former 3rd-round selection has allowed a 9.53 ERA. He’s walked nearly as many hitters as he’s punched out (33 vs. 37) and surrendered a staggering 11 home runs.

Pilkington’s lone MLB appearance of the year was a two-inning relief outing for Cleveland on April 25. He’d pitched 15 times (including 11 starts) for the Guardians last season. Pilkington managed a respectable 3.88 ERA through his first 58 MLB frames, although that came with a modest 19.4% strikeout percentage and a lofty 12.4% walk rate.

This is the first time in Pilkington’s career in which he has cleared waivers. Because he also has fewer than three years of MLB service time, he doesn’t have the ability to explore free agency. Pilkington will stick with Reno and look for better results that could secure him a new spot on the 40-man roster.

D-Backs Select Dominic Canzone, Designate Konnor Pilkington

The Diamondbacks announced a number of roster moves heading into tonight’s matchup against the Pirates. Arizona selected corner outfielder Dominic Canzone and recalled reliever Justin Martinez from Triple-A Reno. Outfielder Dominic Fletcher was optioned, while reliever Drey Jameson landed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. To clear a 40-man roster spot for Canzone, the Snakes designated lefty Konnor Pilkington for assignment.

Canzone, 25, reaches the majors for the first time. Arizona selected the lefty-swinging outfielder in the eighth round of the 2019 draft out of Ohio State. He has consistently posted big numbers in the minors but progressed relatively slowly up the ladder. He first reached Double-A late in 2021 and got to the Triple-A level for the first time last season.

Baseball America ranked him the #25 prospect in the D-Backs’ system over the winter. The outlet praised his power upside and statistical track record but suggested some scouts have expressed trepidations about his hit tool and athleticism. Canzone has continued to post excellent numbers over the past few months, hitting .354/.431/.634 with 16 home runs through 304 trips to the plate.

Even in an extremely hitter-friendly environment in Reno, Canzone’s production stands out. He’s walking at a 12.8% clip and has only struck out 13.2% of the time. Among Pacific Coast League hitters, he ranks eighth in on-base percentage and tops the circuit in slugging. He’ll add some short-term outfield depth with Corbin Carroll day-to-day after reinjuring his shoulder last night.

Canzone isn’t the only Diamondback hoping to make his MLB debut. This is Martinez’s second promotion, but he was optioned a few days after his first without appearing in a game. The 21-year-old righty has a 3.77 ERA over 31 innings in Reno. He replaces Jameson in the relief corps for now.

The D-Backs acquired Pilkington in a cash transaction from the Guardians in May. The 25-year-old has spent his entire time in the organization on optional assignment to Reno. Over 11 starts there, he’s been tagged for a 9.53 ERA with a below-average 18% strikeout rate and a huge 16.1% walk percentage.

Pilkington tossed 58 innings for the Guardians last summer. He posted a decent 3.88 ERA but with worse than average strikeout and walk numbers over his initial MLB look. The Mississippi State product has struggled at the Triple-A level but posted a 3.04 ERA in 100 2/3 Double-A frames. Arizona will trade him or put him on waivers within a week.

Guardians Trade Konnor Pilkington To Diamondbacks

The Guardians have traded lefty Konnor Pilkington to the D-backs in exchange for cash, per announcements from both teams. Arizona had an open spot on the 40-man roster, so a corresponding 40-man move was not needed. Pilkington has been optioned to Triple-A Reno.

Pilkington, 25, has had a rough start to his season in Triple-A, where he’s been clobbered for 13 runs on 19 hits and 11 walks with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings of work. His 2022 season in Triple-A featured similar struggles, evidenced by a 5.88 ERA in 56 2/3 frames, but despite his unsightly showing in Columbus, Pilkington had a solid MLB debut last year.

In 58 innings for the Guardians, he turned in a 3.88 ERA through 11 starts and four relief appearances. He’s added another two scoreless innings here in 2023. Pilkington’s career 19.5% strikeout rate is about three percentage points below the league average, and his 12.4% walk rate is about four percentage points higher than average. He’s more than held lefties in check in his big league career, yielding just a .238/.333/.286 batting line. Righties have been better but haven’t completely torched him, turning in a .234/.335/.372 output.

Pilkington has a pair of minor league option years remaining — this year included — and has had some success in the big leagues in a rotation role already. He’ll give the D-backs some optionable depth both this year and next, which of extra importance with Zach Davies on the injured list, Madison Bumgarner already having been released (hence the open 40-man spot) and young arms like Ryne Nelson, Drey Jameson and Tommy Henry all struggling to various extents to begin the season.

Guardians Promote Tanner Bibee, Designate Konnor Pilkington For Assignment

The Guardians announced Wednesday that they’ve selected the contract of top pitching prospect Tanner Bibee from Triple-A Columbus. He’ll make his Major League debut and start today’s game. In a corresponding roster move, left-hander Konnor Pilkington has been designated for assignment.

Bibee, 24, was Cleveland’s fifth-round pick in 2021 but has quickly outshined that relatively humble draft status. The right-hander breezed through High-A and Double-A in 2022, showing pristine command and a strong ability to miss bats as he pitched to a combined 2.17 ERA in 132 2/3 innings. He’s opened the 2023 campaign with 15 1/3 innings of 1.76 ERA ball and a 19-to-8 K/BB ratio. While Bibee’s command hasn’t been as sharp in this year’s small sample, he’s walked just 6.1% of his opponents since being drafted and boasts a career 32.2% strikeout rate in the minors.

Bibee’s rapid ascension through the Cleveland system is largely attributable to a major jump in fastball velocity. After sitting in the high 80s and low 90s in college at Cal State Fullerton, his heater now resides in the mid-90s. He ranks comfortably within the sport’s top 100 prospects at MLB.com (No. 59), FanGraphs (No. 69) and Baseball America (No. 80). FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen details many of the changes Bibee has made to his mechanics, pitch selection and his physique since being drafted — all without sacrificing the command that garnered him attention in the draft.

Cleveland’s rotation has struggled thus far, with Shane Bieber the only member of the Opening Day quintet who’s currently healthy and pitching well. Triston McKenzie is out until at least late next month due to a teres major strain, and Aaron Civale is on the injured list as well thanks to an oblique strain. Cal Quantrill has given up at least three runs in four of his five starts, including a five-run clunker in 3 1/3 innings against the Rockies earlier this week. Zach Plesac has been tagged for a 6.50 ERA through his first four starts. Neither Quantrill nor Plesac have ever missed many bats, but this year’s strikeout rates of 12.8% and 14.9%, respectively, are both career-lows for the pair of righties.

In light of those injuries and shaky performances, Cleveland has begun to tap into its farm system early. Left-hander Logan Allen — not to be confused with the former Cleveland pitcher of the same name — made his big league debut against the Marlins earlier this week and fired six innings of one-run ball. Righty Peyton Battenfield has held his own through three starts in spite of a rocky 10.8% walk rate. Bibee will join the group for now, and with a strong debut, it’s possible he could stake a claim to a rotation spot moving forward.

Given the timing of his call to the big leagues, Bibee won’t have enough days on the schedule to reach a full year of service time in 2023, even if he’s in the big leagues for good. He could still snag that full year of service with a strong showing in the American League’s Rookie of the Year voting, but barring that scenario, he’ll remain under club control through the 2029 season. He will, however, project as an eventual Super Two player if he sticks in the big leagues, which would position him for arbitration eligibility four times rather than three, beginning after the 2025 season.

As for Pilkington, he’s had a tough start to the season in Triple-A. The 25-year-old southpaw has made four starts and been tagged for 13 runs on 19 hits and 11 walks with 14 strikeouts in 14 innings. He had a rough showing in Triple-A last year as well (5.88 ERA in 56 2/3 innings), but Pilkington was also serviceable in 58 Major League frames in 2022.

In last year’s MLB debut, Pilkington worked to a 3.88 ERA over those 58 innings, making 11 starts and another four relief appearances. His pedestrian 19.4% strikeout rate and bloated 12.4% walk rate made that ERA appear rather suspect, but the bottom-line results were solid.

The Guardians will have a week to trade Pilkington or else attempt to pass him through outright waivers. Given that he’s a 25-year-old lefty who’s stretched out to start and has a minor league option remaining beyond this year, there’s a decent chance another club in need of some pitching depth would have interest, if not via a minor trade then at least via waiver claim. If he makes it through waivers unclaimed, he’ll remain in the Cleveland organization, as he doesn’t have the service time or prior outright required to reject an outright assignment to Triple-A.

Guardians Acquire Sandy Leon, Designate Ian Gibaut For Assignment

The Guardians announced this morning that they’ve acquired veteran catcher Sandy Leon from the Reds in exchange for cash. He’s being added directly to the Major League roster, and right-hander Ian Gibaut has been designated for assignment in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Leon’s acquisition comes in conjunction with catcher Austin Hedges being placed on the 7-day concussion list. Meanwhile, righty Anthony Castro has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus to join the bullpen, and lefty Konnor Pilkington has been tabbed as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader against the division-leading Twins. He’ll start the second game today for Cleveland.

Leon, 33, was with Cleveland for the 2020 season and also spent the bulk of Spring Training with the Guardians this season before being granted his release. He signed a minor league deal with the Reds in mid-April and has spent the bulk of the season in Triple-A Louisville, where he’s batted .222/.321/.306 in 84 plate appearances.

A career .212/.277/.319 hitter who’s never hit much outside of a magical 2016 campaign in Boston, when he slashed .310/.369/.476 in 283 plate appearances, Leon is a respected veteran who is generally lauded for his game-calling and defensive prowess. He’s thwarted one-third of the stolen-base attempts against him in his big league career and regularly drawn positive marks for his framing and pitch blocking. In 3621 innings behind the dish, Leon has totaled 36 Defensive Runs Saved.

Cleveland clearly places a premium on defense behind the plate, which is obvious when looking at the glove-first nature of their catching corps in recent years. Beyond Leon, they’ve relied primarily on Hedges, Roberto Perez and Yan Gomes for the better part of a decade — all of whom are considered premium defenders even though they’ve rarely contributed much with the bat. (Perez and Gomes each had a brief run of plus offense but graded out below-average over their Cleveland tenures as a whole.)

Given the nature of his acquisition, Leon could be in for a brief stay with the Guardians. Then again, Luke Maile has batted just .180/.268/.279 through 71 plate appearances this season, so even if Hedges returns in short order, it’s perhaps possible that Leon could supplant Maile as the backup to Hedges.

Leon’s return to the big leagues comes at the expense of Gibaut, who’d only just returned to the Majors himself yesterday. He pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in last night’s blowout at the hands of his 2021 Twins teammates but will now be traded or placed on outright waivers within a week’s time.

Gibaut, 28, has pitched in parts of four Major League seasons, totaling 34 2/3 innings of 5.19 ERA ball between the Rangers, Rays, Twins and Guardians. He’s notched a 3.20 ERA in 19 2/3 innings with Triple-A Columbus this season and carries a career 4.15 ERA, 29% strikeout rate and 10.9% walk rate in 136 2/3 frames at that level.

Between that solid track record and the fact that Gibaut sat at 97.1 mph with his heater last night — a huge jump from the 95.3 mph he averaged from 2019-21 — it’s possible a bullpen-needy club will look to claim him or strike up a small trade with Cleveland. If not, he’ll be able to reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency, should he choose, by virtue of the fact that he’s previously been outrighted in his career.

Guardians Designate Yu Chang, Select Oscar Gonzalez

The Guardians announced a flurry of roster moves prior to tonight’s game, with left-hander Konnor Pilkington and outfielder Richie Palacios being recalled to the active roster. Outfielder Oscar Gonzalez has also had his contract selected, with Yu Chang being designated for assignment to make room for him on both the active and 40-man rosters. To clear space on the active roster for Pilkington and Palacios, Franmil Reyes has been placed on the injured list alongside Aaron Civale, whose IL placement has already been reported. Right hamstring tightness is the diagnosis for Reyes, per Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal.

Chang has seen sporadic time in the big leagues with Cleveland in each season since his 2019 debut. In that time, he’s gotten into 131 games and made 358 plate appearances, but hit just .208/.265/.372 for a wRC+ of 71. Having exhausted his option years, the club was forced to designate him for assignment in order to open up a spot on the active roster.

Despite that lackluster batting line, it’s possible that other clubs could find some positives to focus on. Chang brings positional versatility, having played all four infield positions with competence. Statcast’s Outs Above Average considers him to be above average at each one, having valued him at +8 OAA overall in his career thus far. He also showed intriguing plate discipline in his first couple of campaigns, with walk rates above 13% in both 2019 and 2020, though that dropped to just 4.4% last year. He hasn’t walked at all so far this year, though he’s only been up to the plate ten times.

As for Gonzalez, he was a big international signing for Cleveland back in 2014, earning a bonus of $300K. Baseball America placed him on their list of top prospects in the system four straight years from 2017 to 2020. Their report on him notes that he brings a lot of power to the table but can be held back due to a lack of plate discipline. Last year, between Double-A and Triple-A, he hit 31 home runs in 121 games and hit .293/.329/.542 overall for a 130 wRC+. However, that came with a 22.2% strikeout rate and 4.4% walk rate. This year, in 41 Triple-A games, he’s already hit nine homers but is walking just 3.3% of the time, slashing .282/.308/.506, 110 wRC+.

Gonzalez joins an outfield mix that also features Myles Straw, Steven Kwan, Amed Rosario, Oscar Mercado and Palacios. Reyes had been the team’s primary designated hitter though, and with him now on the shelf until his hamstring recovers, there should be some DH at-bats to spread around.

Guardians Reinstate Owen Miller

The Guardians are activating Owen Miller from the Covid-related injured list prior to today’s game, per Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal. Konnor Pilkington is being optioned to make room for Miller on the active roster. Players on the Covid-IL don’t count against a team’s 40-man roster, but the club had an open spot, meaning they won’t be required to make a corresponding move in that regard.

Miller was one of several Guardians players who went on the Covid-IL last week. That interrupted an otherworldly start to the season for Miller, who hit .500/.545/.964 in his first nine games. That amounts to a wRC+ of 334. That’s obviously a very small sample, but it’s nonetheless encouraging for a Cleveland team that was widely expected to have strong pitching but mediocre offense. In order to stay competitive in a strong American League playoff race, they will need some of the young players on their roster, like the 25-year-old Miller, to take steps forward.

With Miller’s return, the club’s 40-man roster is now full. However, Yu Chang and Anthony Castro aren’t currently occupying spots due to being on the Covid-IL and will need to be added back once they are available to return.

As for Pilkington, the 24-year-old was just called up in recent days and made his MLB debut, throwing five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just a single walk.

Guardians Designate Seven Players For Assignment

The Guardians announced Friday that they’ve designated outfielders Daniel Johnson and Harold Ramirez; righties Justin Garza and J.C. Mejia; and lefties Kyle Nelson, Alex Young and Scott Moss for assignment.

Cleveland also added a whopping 10 players to the 40-man roster, headlined by top prospects Tyler Freeman and George Valera. Also added to the 40-man roster are Brayan Rocchio, Richie Palacios, Steven Kwan, Jose Tena, Cody Morris, Bryan Lavastida, Konnor Pilkington and Jhonkensy Noel.

Finally, the Guardians have also acquired right-hander Tobias Myers from the Rays in exchange for minor league infielder Junior Caminero, tweets FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen. Myers will also be added to the 40-man roster.

Johnson and Ramirez have been part of a revolving door in an uncertain Cleveland outfield in recent seasons. Neither has hit well enough to lock down a permanent roster spot, although Ramirez did start more than half the team’s games in 2021. Ramirez would have the right to elect minor league free agency if he clears waivers.

Mejia logged significant action as a depth starter this year but struggled. Garza, Nelson and Young saw some bullpen work, while Moss has yet to make it to the major leagues.

The massive turnover highlights the high minors depth Cleveland has stockpiled in recent seasons. The selection of ten prospects is highly atypical, but it’s a testament to the Guardians’ scouting and development staffs that they’ve managed to accumulate so much talent they’re afraid other teams might jump on. That’s particularly true on the position player side, with much of this group being hitters with advanced bat-to-ball skills who could factor onto the big league roster in relatively short order.

Freeman, Valera and Rocchio might be the most notable. All three appeared on FanGraphs’ Top 100 list entering the 2021 season. They’ve all topped out at Double-A Akron, where each posted above-average offensive performances despite being 22 years old or younger. Valera plays center field, while Freeman and Rocchio are middle infielders. Palacios is another infielder with great high minors numbers, while Lavastida is regarded as one of the better catching prospects in the minors.
