Pirates Outright Jose Godoy

The Pirates have sent catcher Jose Godoy outright to Triple-A Indianapolis, per his MLB transactions page. Godoy was designated for assignment last week. The 27-year-old can now become a minor league free agent.

Godoy has made a handful of appearances in the majors over the past two seasons for the Mariners, Twins and Pirates, but struggled to hit much. In a combined 62 plate appearances between 2021-22, Godoy tallied just seven hits while striking out 23 times. This year at Triple-A, he hit .227/.290/.364 with six home runs across 53 games for the Twins’ and Pirates’ affiliates.

Originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Cardinals in 2011, Godoy labored through the minors for eight seasons before being released in 2020. The Mariners picked him shortly after and he cracked their MLB roster early in the 2021 season and has bounced round the majors since. While he’s not hit in his brief stint in the big leagues, there should still be a market for him to latch on to a team as minor league catching depth in 2023.

Pirates Claim Ali Sánchez, Beau Sulser; Designate José Godoy

The Pirates have made a pair of waiver claims, according to their transactions tracker at MLB.com. Catcher Ali Sánchez was claimed from the Tigers and right-hander Beau Sulser was claimed from the Orioles. Additionally, the Pirates designated catcher José Godoy for assignment.

Sánchez, 26 in January, has a very limited MLB track record, getting into five games with the Mets in 2020 and two games with the Cardinals in 2021. The Cards kept him in the minors this year, before he went to the Tigers on a waiver claim in June. The Tigers also stashed him in Triple-A as depth, before designating him for assignment last week.

He is known as a glove-first catcher but showed some encouraging signs at the plate this year, walking in 12% of his plate appearances. His batting line in 291 trips to the plate this year was .262/.354/.389 for a wRC+ of 101, or 1% above league average.

The Bucs have a fairly wide open catching mix for next year, Jason Delay and Tyler Heineman getting the bulk of the work down the stretch in 2022. Neither of them hit much but they both posted strong defensive numbers. Delay hit .213/.265/.271 while Heineman slashed .217/.276/.268. They also have Zack Collins, though he spent more time at first base than behind the plate for Pittsburgh. Sánchez will be out of options next year and thus won’t be able to be sent to the minors without first being passed through waivers.

He seems to have replaced Godoy, 28, in the club’s catching plans. Godoy got into 10 MLB games this year between the Twins and Pirates, spending the bulk of his time in Triple-A. He only hit .197/.272/.299 down on the farm for the Twins but a much better .333/.357/.590 in Indianapolis. Still, it seems that wasn’t enough to hold onto a roster spot. Since he has been previously outrighted in his career, he would have the right to elect free agency if he passes through waivers again.

Sulser, 29 in May, began the year with the Pirates but went to the Orioles on a waiver claim in May. Between the two clubs, he threw 22 1/3 innings with a 3.63 ERA, 47.1% ground ball rate, 19.2% strikeout rate and 9.1% walk rate. In 56 2/3 Triple-A innings, he had a much stronger strikeout rate of 24.3%. He will still be optionable in 2023, meaning he can shuttled between Triple-A and the majors again next year.

Pirates Designate Michael Chavis, Greg Allen For Assignment

The Pirates have announced a handful of roster moves prior to tonight’s game, with infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar, who was claimed off waivers from the Yankees yesterday, reporting to the team to take his place on the active roster. Additionally, catcher Jose Godoy has had his contract selected. In corresponding moves, infielder Michael Chavis and outfielder Greg Allen have been designated for assignment.

Chavis, 27, was drafted by the Red Sox and spent the first few years of his MLB career there as a highly-touted prospect, cracking Baseball America’s top 100 in 2018. After a tepid showing in his first tastes of the majors, he came to Pittsburgh in a July 2021 trade that sent Austin Davis the other way. Chavis’s tenure in Pittsburgh got off to a good start as he hit .357/.357/.500 after the trade last year, though an elbow strain limited him to just 12 games. He’s had a much larger sample here in 2022, making 426 plate appearances over 129 games, but hasn’t been able to do much with it. Despite launching 14 long balls on the year, he’s struck out in 29.6% of his plate appearances while walking in only 4.5% of them. On the whole, his batting line for the year is .229/.265/.389, production that’s 21% below league average according to wRC+.

Despite that lackluster output at the plate, Chavis has at least provided defensive versatility, spending time at first, second and third base this year. He passed three years of MLB service time this year and was going to be eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason. It seems the Bucs weren’t planning on keeping him around with a higher salary next year and have effectively given him an early non-tender. With the trade deadline long gone, the Bucs will have no options except to put Chavis on outright waivers or release waivers. If any team believed Chavis could take his bat to another level, they could put in a claim. As mentioned, Chavis would be due an arbitration raise for next year if he finds another roster spot, though he also has an option year remaining.

Allen, 29, is in his sixth MLB season, having donned a few jerseys in that time. He began his career with Cleveland before bouncing to the Padres and Yankees. The Pirates claimed him off waivers from the Yanks in November but placed Allen on the 60-day injured list on Opening Day with a left hamstring injury. He was activated in July but has hit just .186/.260/.271 in 46 games since, striking out in 31.3% of his plate appearances. Like Chavis, he crossed three years of MLB service time this year and was headed into the arbitration process for the first time. He’ll be placed on waivers in the coming days to see if any team is intrigued enough to give him a roster spot and pay bump. Despite the poor showing at the plate this year, he stole eight bases and provided above-average outfield defense. Neither player would be eligible for postseason play with a new club, as players must be in a team’s system prior to September 1 in order to qualify.

Godoy, 27, began the year with the Mariners before going to the Giants, Twins and Pirates on a series of waiver claims. He’s a well-regarded defender behind the plate but hasn’t shown much with the bat at the major league level. His career batting line is .128/.212/.149, though in a small sample of just 52 plate appearances. The Bucs have been using Jason Delay as their primary catcher with Zack Collins as the backup, though Collins has also been spending some time at first base. Godoy’s promotion will give them a more traditional backup catcher for the final stretch of the schedule.

  • The Pirates announced that catcher Jose Godoy accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis. The backstop was designated for assignment over the weekend. Claimed off waivers from the Twins, Godoy appeared in five games with the Bucs. He has 52 big league plate appearances under his belt with the Mariners, Twins and Pirates over the past two seasons. He’s a .267/.320/.390 hitter in parts of three campaigns at Triple-A.

  • Right-hander Ralph Garza Jr. went unclaimed on outright waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Durham by the Rays, tweets Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The 28-year-old Garza appeared in 19 games with Tampa Bay this season and pitched 35 innings of 3.34 ERA ball, albeit with a dismal 17-to-16 K/BB ratio (11.1% strikeout rate, 10.5% walk rate). He’s posted better strikeout and walk numbers down in Durham, where he carries a 2.84 ERA with a 19.4% strikeout rate against a tiny 3.2% walk rate in 25 1/3 frames. Garza has big league experience with the Astros, Twins and Rays, and he’s generally turned in solid results in the upper minors and in the Majors. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get another look in the big leagues before too long.
  • Marlins righty Parker Bugg was assigned outright to Triple-A Jacksonville after clearing waivers, per the team’s transactions log. He’s already made his first appearance in Triple-A since passing through waivers. The 27-year-old Bugg was selected to the Major League roster on Aug. 14 but was designated for assignment just two days later and without ever getting into a game for his Major League debut. A 27th-round pick by the Fish back in 2016, Bugg has pitched to a 1.82 ERA with a 27.5% strikeout rate and 11.1% walk rate in 29 2/3 innings of Triple-A work this season. It’s his third stint at the Triple-A level for Bugg, who was hit hard there in ’19 (7.68 ERA in 36 1/3 innings), improved in ’21 (4.46 ERA, 66 2/3 innings) and is now enjoying some of the best results of his career.

Pirates Select Cam Vieaux, Designate Jose Godoy

The Pirates announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Cam Vieaux. Righty Yohan Ramirez was optioned to make room on the active roster. To open a spot on the 40-man, catcher Jose Godoy was designated for assignment.

This will be the second time that Vieaux, 28, has been selected to the Pirates’ roster. They first called him up in June, letting him make five appearances. The first four went pretty well, with the southpaw only allowing a single earned run in that time. In his fifth outing, however, the Bucs sent him in to pitch the top of the eighth in a game they were losing to the Brewers 9-1. Despite Vieaux getting hit around badly, there was no help forthcoming to get out of the inning. The lefty ended up tossing 56 pitches in that one frame, allowing six hits, three walks and eight runs, seven of them earned. As a result, he has a 14.40 ERA through five innings this year.

As a reward for eating that inning, Vieaux was optioned to the minors and designated for assignment in the following days. He cleared waivers and was outrighted, sticking in the Pirates’ system. In 42 Triple-A innings this year, he has an even 3.00 ERA, with a 23.3% strikeout rate, 8.8% walk rate and 43.1% ground ball rate.

As for Godoy, 27, he’s surely racked up his share of frequent flyer miles this year. He began 2022 in the Mariners organization but was claimed off waivers by the Giants in March, who promptly lost him to the Twins on another waiver claim. He stuck with Minnesota until August, at which point he went to Pittsburgh on yet another trip to the waiver wire. He’s spent most of his time in the minors this year, getting into 44 Triple-A games and hitting .201/.272/.299 in that time.

Since the trade deadline has passed, the Pirates will have no choice but to put Godoy on outright waivers or release waivers in the coming days. If Godoy doesn’t get claimed for a fourth time this year, he can reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, by virtue of having been previously outrighted in his career. This leaves the Pirates with Jason Delay and Tyler Heineman as the only catchers on their 40-man roster.

Pirates Claim Jose Godoy, Designate Taylor Davis

The Pirates have claimed catcher José Godoy off waivers from the Twins, according to announcements from both teams. Pittsburgh designated backstop Taylor Davis for assignment in a corresponding move.

Godoy, 27, appeared in two games with Minnesota this season. The lefty-hitting backstop has otherwise the year at Triple-A St. Paul, hitting .197/.272/.299 through 151 plate appearances. That’s obviously not great output, but he’s a well-regarded receiver. A former Cardinals and Mariners farmhand, he owns a .271/.351/.361 line through parts of ten minor league seasons.

He’ll replace Davis as the #2 catcher behind Jason Delay. The journeyman was selected onto the Bucs’ roster yesterday when Tyler Heineman went on the injured list. Davis, 32, has appeared in parts of four major league seasons but has only 22 games under his belt. He’s spent the season with Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .282/.358/.320 in 35 games.

Twins Select Aaron Sanchez, Designate Jose Godoy

The Twins announced Monday that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Aaron Sanchez from Triple-A St. Paul and opened a spot on the 40-man roster by designating catcher Jose Godoy for assignment. Minnesota also optioned righty Yennier Cano to St. Paul, recalled outfielder Mark Contreras. Lastly, Gio Urshela was reinstated from the paternity list, while outfielder Gilberto Celestino was placed on the paternity list in his place.

Sanchez, 30, was a top prospect and eventual All-Star with the Blue Jays earlier in his career, finishing seventh in 2016 Cy Young voting on the strength of a flat 3.00 ERA through 192 innings. Unfortunately, a series of shoulder injuries, plus some nagging blister issues, have combined to derail that once-promising career. Sanchez appeared in just 64 games over a period of five years from 2017-21 and has yet to regain that 2016 form.

Minnesota will be Sanchez’s second stop in 2022, as he began the year in the Nationals organization but struggled mightily. He pitched well in Triple-A for the Nats (3.60 ERA) but was tattooed for an 8.33 ERA in 31 1/3 frames for Washington’s big league club.

Since being cut loose by the Nats, Sanchez has latched on with the Twins and again held his own pitching in Triple-A. He has a 4.26 ERA in eight starts/38 innings for the Twins this year, bringing his overall Triple-A numbers to a 4.08 ERA with a 16% strikeout rate, 7.1% walk rate and a 45.8% grounder rate.

It’s unlikely the Twins expect Sanchez to hold down a rotation spot for the remainder of the season, though with a strong enough showing early on, he could potentially pitch his way into consideration for a roster spot the rest of the way. But the Twins need some immediate help on the pitching staff and, like the majority of teams around the league, have yet to line up on a meaningful trade acquisition to augment the staff. Minnesota is rumored to be in the market for rotation and bullpen upgrades alike, and it’d be a genuine surprise if they don’t come away from tomorrow’s trade deadline with at least one new starter and one new reliever.

As for Godoy, he’s a 27-year-old who spent the bulk of his career in the Cardinals’ system but has begun to bounce around a bit on waivers, going to the Mariners and then the Twins in recent months. He’s batted just .197/.272/.299 in Triple-A this season but is a well-regarded defensive catcher with minor league options remaining. The Twins can trade him up until tomorrow’s deadline and can otherwise attempt to pass him through outright waivers at any point in the next week.

Twins Reinstate Luis Arraez, Option Jose Godoy, Transfer Chris Paddack to 60-Day IL

The first-place Twins made a flurry of moves this afternoon, the team announced, including reinstating infielder Luis Arraez from the COVID IL and optioning catcher Jose Godoy to Triple-A St. Paul. They also appointed right-hander Cole Sands as the 27th man for today’s game against the Astros (allowed as a result of the suspension of last night’s Twins-Astros tilt in the fourth inning) and transferred right-hander Chris Paddack, who’s been out since Tuesday with elbow inflammation, to the 60-day IL.

Arraez, who’d been out since Friday, had gotten off to a hot start to the season, slashing .301/.378/.370 while logging significant time at first, second, and third. He’ll return to his role as manager Rocco Baldelli’s super-utility man, though he could also serve as the Twins’ primary first baseman with Miguel Sano set to miss a significant chunk of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He’s shared time there with top prospect Jose Miranda and outfielder Alex Kirilloff since Sano hit the IL.

Given the relatively short duration of Arraez’s absence, perhaps the more significant news in Minnesota is Paddack’s transferral to the 60-day injured list, which could signal that the recently acquired righty will undergo a second Tommy John surgery — as had been feared since his departure in the third inning of Sunday’s game against the A’s. This hasn’t been confirmed, though the timing is ominous: Dan Hayes of The Athletic reported yesterday morning that the former Padre would get a second opinion by today. Regardless, Paddack will now be on the shelf until at least July — and quite likely until at least next year. In 22 1/3 innings across five starts prior to the injury, Paddack posted a 4.03 ERA (1.73 FIP) for a Twins staff already without Bailey Ober, Dylan Bundy, and Kenta Maeda.

Sands, selected out of Florida State by the Twins in the fifth round of the 2018 amateur draft, has mostly started in the minors. While he’s off to a rough start to the season at Triple-A St. Paul, he did turn in a strong 2021, logging 80 1/3 innings with a 2.46 ERA and solidly more than a strikeout per inning for Double-A Wichita. The call-up marks his second stint in the majors this year; he covered two innings (and allowed two earned runs) in an early May blowout of the Rays.

Godoy, who made his big-league debut with the Mariners last year, appeared in only a single game for the Twins. The 27-year-old backstop will return to Triple-A to serve as injury cover Ryan Jeffers and Gary Sanchez.

Twins Place Trevor Larnach On Injured List

The Twins announced to various reporters, including Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, that outfield Trevor Larnach has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right groin strain. The move is retroactive to May 7. Catcher Jose Godoy has been recalled in a corresponding move.

The Twins have been fairly snakebit recently, with position players Kyle Garlick, Luis Arraez, Miguel Sano and now Larnach all heading to the injured list in the past week or so. There have also been other minor injuries to players that haven’t resulted in IL placements. (More on those in a moment.) Larnach made his MLB debut last year and struggled in his first taste of the big leagues, putting up a line of .223/.322/.350, 89 wRC+. His sophomore season has been a nice step forward so far, as he’s currently hitting .313/.365/.448. His strikeout rate is still quite high at 31.3%, but he’s still put up a wRC+ of 141 on the year so far. That progress will now have to be put on pause with this groin strain, though it doesn’t seem like it will be a length absence. Bench coach Jayce Tingler tells Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com that they’re hopeful he will only be out of action for about a week.

There’s even better news around the rest of the roster, though. Byron Buxton left yesterday’s game due to hip tightness, which was diagnosed as a low level strain, per Helfand. She notes that Buxton could return as soon as the Astros series, which begins on Tuesday. That will surely cause Minnesota fans to breathe a sigh of relief, as it seems they can avoid another big trough on the Buxton rollercoaster. In his career, he has frequently oscillated between flashes of brilliance on the field and extended stays on the injured list. So far this year, he’s hitting an incredible .278/.342/.722, producing a 211 wRC+. With Larnach on the shelf and Buxton temporarily unavailable, the club has an outfield of Max Kepler, Gilberto Celestino and Nick Gordon for today’s game.

In other good news, manager Rocco Baldelli tells Helfand that Luis Arraez and Dylan Bundy, both on the Covid-IL, are feeling better and flying back to Minneapolis today. The club will have an interesting decision to make once Bundy returns, as prospect Josh Winder has stepped into the rotation and has been excellent so far. Through his first 22 1/3 innings of MLB action, he has a 1.61 ERA, along with a 24.7% strikeout rate and 4.9% walk rate. With the activation of Sonny Gray yesterday, the club now has a rotation of Winder, Gray, Joe Ryan, Chris Archer and Chris Paddack. With Bundy returning, they could go for a six-man rotation or perhaps bump someone to a long relief role out of the bullpen. Bailey Ober could also re-enter the mix soon, as he went on the 10-day IL with a groin strain April 29.

Twins Place Miguel Sano On 10-Day Injured List, Surgery Under Consideration

MAY 2: Surgery is on the table for Sano, who officially went on the IL this morning with a left knee sprain, according to Baldelli (Helfand link). The Twins will make the determination of whether a procedure is necessary this week. If Sano were to go under the knife, he’d still be expected to return this season, tweets Joe Trezza of MLB.com.

MAY 1: The Twins will be placing first baseman Miguel Sano on the 10-day injured list, manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters (including Betsy Helfand of The St. Paul Pioneer Press).  Sano is dealing with a sore left knee.  Catcher Jose Godoy will also be optioned to Triple-A, so the Twins will get their roster from 28 players down to 26 by tomorrow’s deadline.

Sano has missed four of Minnesota’s last five games with the injury, suffered during the game-ending rundown in the Twins’ 5-4 walkoff win over the Tigers on Tuesday.  After sitting out three games, Sano was the starting first baseman Saturday but was removed from the game during the seventh inning.

A timeline isn’t yet known for when Sano might be able to return to the lineup, but this absence could serve as something of a reset to his 2022 season.  Sano has been ice cold at the plate, hitting only .093/.231/.148 over his first 65 plate appearances.  As horrific as those numbers look, Sano has also been rather unusually unlucky, with only a .121 BABIP and a .196 wOBA far below his .344 xwOBA.  Sano’s xwOBA is actually above the league average, and his hard-contact numbers (hard-hit ball percentage, barrel percentage) and walk rate have all been excellent.

Though this indicates some hope Sano can rebound once he returns from the IL, the Twins will be shorthanded at first base in his absence.  Alex Kirilloff would normally take over the corner but Kirilloff is himself injured, currently on a minor league rehab assignment for a wrist issue.  If losing Sano and Kirilloff wasn’t enough for the Twins, Kyle Garlick also left today’s game due to calf tightness, so Minnesota might also have a gap to fill in the outfield depth chart.

Luis Arraez had never played first base prior to this season, but the utilityman has been filling in for Sano this week and looks like Minnesota’s top choice as the temporary replacement.  Baldelli also suggested that third baseman Gio Urshela or catcher Gary Sanchez could get some work at first base.  Urshela has played a handful of games at the position during his career, while Sanchez has played three games as a first baseman during his pro career (and none since 2017).
