Here are today’s outright assignments and minor moves from around the league…

  • Brad Snyder, who recently elected free agency after being outrighted by the Rangers, has signed with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports (via Twitter). Snyder has crushed Triple-A pitching to the tune of a .288/.351/.507 batting line in his career but has never received an extended look in the bigs.
  • First baseman Matt Clark, who recently opted out of his minor league deal with the Mets, tweets that he has signed a new minor league deal with the Brewers (hat tip: Adam Rubin of ESPN New York on Twitter). Clark hit .297/.380/.498 with 10 homers for Double-A Binghamton this season, one year after he posted a .785 OPS and hit 25 bombs for the Chunici Dragons of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
  • Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports that the Braves are set to acquire right-hander Andrew Robinson from the Astros. The 26-year-old Robinson, a former 12th-round pick by the Astros, has excelled in 41 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season, posting a combined 2.40 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9. Further details of the deal aren’t known at this time.
  • The Nationals announced that Greg Dobbs has accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Syracuse.  The 35-year-old was designated for assignment last week.  He has largely struggled in a limited bench role for the Marlins and Nats this year and owns a .171/.186/.195 line through 43 plate appearances on the season.  Over parts of 11 seasons in the bigs, Dobbs has slashed .261/.306/.386 over 2,272 plate appearances.

Nationals Designate Greg Dobbs For Assignment

The Nationals have designated corner infielder Greg Dobbs for assignment, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post (via Twitter). The move creates roster space for the promotion of pitcher Taylor Hill.

Dobbs, 35, was picked up mid-season after being released by the Marlins. He has largely struggled in a limited bench role, and owns a .171/.186/.195 line through 43 plate appearances on the year. Over parts of 11 seasons in the bigs, Dobbs has slashed .261/.306/.386 over 2,272 plate appearances.

Hill is a 25-year-old righty who was taken in the sixth round of the 2011 draft. He has risen steadily through the system, and currently owns a 1.92 ERA with 6.2 K/9 against just 0.9 BB/9 through 93 2/3 frames in his first extended time at Triple-A. Though he has worked as a starter in the minors, Hill will presumably slot into the Nationals pen for his first MLB action.

The Nationals announced today that they’ve selected the contract of Greg Dobbs and transferred Eury Perez to the 60-day DL while optioning Sandy Leon to Triple-A in order to clear roster space. Dobbs inked a minor league deal with Washington earlier in the week. Elsewhere on the minor moves circuit…

  • Julio Franco, who played professionally in parts of four decades, is not quite done yet. The independent league Fort Worth Cats announced today that the 53-year-old will serve as a player/coach for the team’s first homestand. Among his other stops, Franco saw time in 23 MLB campaigns, putting up a strong .298/.365/.417 triple-slash with 173 home runs and 281 stolen bases. While he spent time with eight MLB clubs, Franco did most of his damage with the Indians and Rangers in the late-eighties and early nineties. He then returned for a solid five-year run with the Braves (every season of which came in Franco’s forties). While it would be unwise to count out the ageless wonder, it seems rather unlikely that Franco has in mind another run at the bigs at this point.
  • ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that Matt LaPorta has asked for and been granted his release from the Mexican League’s Campeche Pirates (Twitter link). The former No. 7 overall draft pick and top prospect batted .286/.366/.555 with seven homers in 32 games for Campeche.
  • The Atlantic League’s Bridgeport Bluefish announced today that outfielder Brandon Boggs has signed a minor league deal with the Braves. Boggs hit .324/.390/.426 in 78 PA with Bridgeport. This will be his second stint with the Braves, as he spent the bulk of last season playing with their Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett. The 31-year-old Boggs has a nice track record at Triple-A and has seen action in parts of four seasons with the Brewers and Rangers.
  • Former big league right-hander Jeff Bennett, who had also been playing in the Mexican League, has inked a minor league deal with the Dodgers, reports MLB Daily Dish’s Chris Cotillo (Twitter link). The 33-year-old Bennett has a 4.30 ERA in 228 1/3 big league innings with the Braves, Rays and Brewers, but he hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2009. He turned in a strong 2.44 ERA with 6.7 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 44 1/3 innings for los Broncos de Reynosa in 2014.

Nationals Sign Greg Dobbs To Minors Deal

11:21am: Dobbs’ contract contains an opt-out clause in early June, MLBTR’s Zach Links reports, but Dobbs expects to be on Washington’s Major League roster well before that date.

10:19am: The Nationals have signed Greg Dobbs to a minor league contract, the team announced via its Twitter feed.  Dobbs is represented by the Beverly Hills Sports Council.

Dobbs was released by the Marlins earlier this week after picking just one hit in 13 PA with Miami this season, with all of his plate appearances coming in a pinch-hit capacity.  Dobbs has experience at first base, third base and both corner outfield spots, so he could provide some valuable depth for Washington if he makes the Major League roster.  The Nats may have had an eye on Dobbs for a while, as former manager Davey Johnson “really wanted” to acquire Dobbs before the 2013 season, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post tweets.

The 35-year-old is joining the fourth different franchise of his 11-year Major League career.  The left-handed hitting Dobbs has been used mostly against right-handed pitching over his career, and he has slashed .266/.310/.403 in 2022 PA against righties.

Marlins Release Greg Dobbs

MAY 6: The Marlins have released Dobbs, tweets MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro.

APRIL 29: The Marlins announced that they have designated Greg Dobbs for assignment in order to clear roster space for Ed Lucas, who has been reinstated from the disabled list.

The 35-year-old Dobbs made just 13 pinch-hitting appearances for the Fish this season, collecting one hit. Last season, he appeared in a more regular (but still limited) role for Miami, batting .228/.303/.300 in 267 plate appearances.

Dobbs and the Marlins agreed to a one-year, $1.75MM contract extension last August that was the source of some controversy. Former president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest, who had not yet been fired at that time, was reportedly unaware of the contract negotiations, as Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria is said to have negotiated the deal with Dobbs and his agents entirely on his own.

Justin Ruggiano, Greg Dobbs On Trade Block?

The Marlins appear to be exploring trade options for players besides Logan Morrison as the third day of the Winter Meetings gets underway in Orlando. A source tells Joe Frisaro of MLB.com (Twitter link) that the Fish are listening to offers for Justin Ruggiano, while MLB.com's Mark Bowman (Twitter link) hears that the club may soon move Greg Dobbs.

Ruggiano, 31, recorded an impressive .313/.374/.535 slash line in 320 plate appearances in 2012, but slipped to a more pedestrian .222/.298/.396 in an expanded role in 2013. He'll be arbitration eligible for the first time this winter. Dobbs' production was also on the decline this past season, as his .603 OPS was about 100 points lower than his rate over previous two seasons with the Marlins. Bowman suggests that the veteran utilityman may be a fit for the Braves.

Both players figure to cost about the same amount in 2014, as Dobbs inked a one-year, $1.7MM extension in September, while Ruggiano projects for an arbitration salary in the neighborhood of $1.8MM.

Marlins, Greg Dobbs Agree To One-Year Extension

10:18pm: Not only did Loria negotiate Dobbs' contract himself, Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest and general manager Michael Hill didn't even know the deal was being struck, Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.  Rodriguez thinks this just adds to the speculation that Beinfest and Hill (and possibly team president David Samson) will be fired.

9:41am: Dobbs will receive a one-year, $1.7MM extension, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The extension was actually agreed upon back in June, he adds (Twitter links).

9:04am: The Marlins are re-signing infielder/pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs for the 2014 season, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Dobbs, a client of the Beverly Hills Sports Council, is currently wrapping up a two-year, $3MM deal with the Fish. According to Jackson, Dobbs said a deal was struck between his agent and owner Jeffrey Loria.

The 35-year-old Dobbs batted .229/.305/.301 with a pair of homers in 226 plate appearances for the FIsh this season. He's spent the past three seasons with Miami, posting an overall batting line of .267/.310/.366. Capable of playing both corner infield and corner outfield positions, Dobbs appeared almost exclusively at first base when he took the field this season, totaling 423 innings at the position but also making a brief, five-inning appearance in right field. Ultimate Zone Rating and The Fielding Bible both graded his first base defense as a positive.

A ten-year Major league veteran, Dobbs has also spent three seasons with the Mariners and four seasons with the Phillies.

Marlins Unlikely To Make Major Trades

The Marlins have improved greatly over the course of the season, as evidenced by their 22-17 record since May 31. MLB.com's Joe Frisaro writes that the team attributes the success to a young core coming together and isn't likely to sell significant pieces to jeopardize that core.

According to Frisaro, Giancarlo Stanton, Logan Morrison, Steve Cishek and Mike Dunn are all considered building blocks and are likely to stay put with the Fish. All of that could change if the Marlins are overwhelmed by a team willing to overpay, but even a package for Cishek would have to start with a team's No. 1 prospect, according to Frisaro. As it stands, the 27-year-old closer is not available.

Ryan Webb and Chad Qualls may still be dealt, as could position players Placido Polanco, Greg Dobbs and Justin Ruggiano. That quintet of veterans has less team control than the untouchables listed by Frisaro, and those players likely aren't seen as core members of the team going forward. It's likely that the Marlins' biggest July trade has already occurred in the form of the Ricky Nolasco trade. The Marlins, according to Frisaro, may be more active on the August waiver trade front than before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

While a deal sounds unlikely, the team has still received plenty of hits on Stanton as well as its many bullpen arms. Ruggiano has also drawn some interest from teams like the Rangers and Yankees, although he's another player the team isn't in a rush to trade.

Marlins Notes: Moran, Deluzio, Ruggiano, Payroll

Ricky Nolasco shared some emotional goodbyes with his Marlins teammates on Sunday morning, the right-hander told Andre C. Fernandez of the Miami Herald, but he is excited about going home to southern California and pitching for the Dodgers.  The Marlins figure to have more moves up their sleeves before the trade deadline so here's the latest out of the Sunshine State…

  • The Marlins are confident they will be able to sign first round draft pick Colin Moran, though they're not sure about third-rounder Ben Deluzio, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.  The Marlins have offered both players contracts that match the assigned slot prices of the sixth (approximately $3.516MM) and 80th ($681.7K) overall picks.  While Moran is coming out of UNC, Deluzio is a high schooler who "is reportedly leaning toward attending Florida State."
  • Also from Spencer, he thinks pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs and relievers Chad Qualls and Ryan Webb could all be dealt before the trade deadline.  The two right-handers have already drawn interest from reliever-needy teams.
  • We heard earlier today that the Yankees, Rangers and other teams had checked in on Justin Ruggiano but the Marlins aren't particularly interested in dealing the outfielder, Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.  Moving Ruggiano could create a depth problem in the outfield given Chris Coghlan's injury status, Christian Yelich's relative under-performance in Double-A and the team's desire to keep Jake Marisnick off the 40-man roster this season.
  • The Nolasco trade seemed to be primarily about dumping salary in 2013 rather than building for the future for the Marlins, Fangraphs' David Cameron opines.  Cameron wonders if situations like this could lead the MLB Players Association to seek some type of "salary floor" in the next collective bargaining agreement.
