Orioles Acquire Edgar Olmos

The Orioles have acquired lefty Edgar Olmos from the Cubs, per a Baltimore announcement. Chicago will receive a player to be named later in the swap.

Olmos will join just-signed southpaw Zach Phillips in the mix to fill in for injured reliever Brian Matusz. Baltimore gave Phillips a 40-man spot, but will be able to hold onto Olmos without committing to him on the major league roster since he was previously outrighted by Chicago.

Baltimore has obviously been intrigued with Olmos before, as he was briefly a member of the organization before the Cubs claimed him off waivers. Soon to turn 26, the former third-round draft pick only has minimal major league experience but posted a 3.55 ERA with 9.3 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 in 33 Triple-A innings last year.

Cubs Claim Edgar Olmos

The Cubs have claimed lefty Edgar Olmos from the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets. Baltimore exposed Olmos to waivers to clear roster space for the signing of Hyun Soo Kim, and Chicago grabbed him back after originally losing him just weeks ago to the O’s by the same procedure.

Olmos is a 25-year-old southpaw who’s changed hands quite a bit in the last few seasons. He obviously has an intriguing arm, and has shown a mid-90s fastball in his brief time in the majors. At Triple-A in 2015, Olmos worked to a 3.55 ERA with 9.3 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 at Triple-A last year.

Orioles Claim Edgar Olmos, Designate Junior Lake

The Orioles announced that they have claimed lefty Edgar Olmos off waivers from the Cubs. Baltimore designated outfielder Junior Lake for assignment to clear roster space.

Olmos, 25, has bounced around via the waiver wire quite a bit in recent years. In fact, Chicago claimed him less than a week ago and obviously sought to stash him with a well-timed outright. Olmos has spent little time in the majors, but has shown an average fastball velocity of over 93 mph and put up a solid 3.55 ERA with 9.3 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 at Triple-A last year.

Baltimore had acquired Lake last summer in the trade that sent Tommy Hunter to the Cubs. He saw minimal MLB action in 2015 after having factored as a frequent contributor in 2013-14. Lake slashed .298/.397/.431 in his 355 Triple-A plate appearances last year, but has done little at the major league level since a strong debut season.

Cubs Claim Lefty Edgar Olmos From Mariners

The Cubs have claimed left-handed reliever Edgar Olmos from the Mariners, the teams announced this afternoon. Olmos was designated for assignment earlier this week.

Olmos, 26 in April, logged 14 innings for the Mariners last season. He yielded seven runs but also walked eight batters against just four strikeouts in his limited Major League action. The lefty has bounced from the Marlins to the Rangers to the Mariners and now the Cubs since 2013 but throws hard for a lefty, having averaged 93.3 mph with his fastball in his 19 Major League frames. Olmos pitched to a 3.55 ERA with 9.3 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9 at Triple-A last year and has held opposing lefties to respective OPS marks of .628 and .619 in 2015 and 2014 (combined Major League and minor league numbers).
