Orioles Outright Anthony Bemboom

Just a month after selecting Anthony Bemboom back to the Major League roster, the Orioles have once again outrighted the veteran backstop to Triple-A Norfolk, per MLB Transactions Log. Because he’s already been outrighted in his career, Bemboom had the right to elect free agency as soon as he cleared waivers. However, there is no indication that the catcher did so, and Roch Kubatko of MASN reports that Bemboom is expected to accept the assignment and compete for the backup job in spring training.

Beemboom had recently signed a split-rate contract with the Birds, paying the 32-year-old a varying rate depending on if he’s in the minors next season, reports Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun. During the 2022 season, Bemboom produced in a limited fashion, hitting .115/.207/.212 in 52 at-bats. He fared slightly better in Triple-A, slashing .228/.292/.350 line in 123 at-bats. However, those marks were below his career marks in Triple-A of 247/.340/.392.

Given his 2022 struggles, the Orioles might look to other backups for the budding star Adley Rutschman during the 2023 season. The Birds currently have Cam Gallagher and Mark Kolozsvary on their 40-man roster, however, neither has extensive Major League experience. The 29-year-old Gallagher has taken 420 at-bats over six seasons, hitting a weak .240/.302/.355, while the 27-year-old Kolozsvary has only appeared in ten games (all in the 2022 season), slashing .200/.238/.450.

With the offseason arriving, the Orioles are conducting typical roster maintenance. Removing Bemboom from the 40-man drops their tally to 36. Additionally, the Birds have John Means on the 60-day injured list, and he’ll need to be reinstated at the start of the offseason.

Orioles Select Anthony Bemboom, Designate Anthony Castro

The Baltimore Orioles have begun their offseason quickly, selecting catcher Anthony Bemboom from Triple-A Norfolk and designating right-hander Anthony Castro for assignment.

Bemboom joined the Orioles on a minor league contract in the offseason, making the Opening Day roster for the 2022 season before being designated for assignment with the arrival of Adley Rutschman. He passed through waivers unclaimed and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk where he spent the rest of the season.

Bemboom had a poor showing in his limited time in the Majors this season, slashing .115/.207/.212 in 52 at-bats for a .418 OPS and throwing out three of eight runners attempting to steal. This production was nothing unusual for the 32-year-old, with Bemboom posting a combined .160/.231/.265 slash line in 181 at-bats over parts of four seasons. In Norfolk, Bemboom produced a marginally better .228/.292/.350 line in 123 at-bats, but he is a career .247/.340/.392/.732 hitter in Triple-A.

This transaction prevents Bemboom from becoming a minor league free agent, and, with just over one year of Major League service time, the Orioles can retain him as a cheap backup to their star catcher if they keep him on the 40-man roster all winter. Current backup Robinson Chirinos is a pending free agent, and recent waiver claim Cam Gallagher is a non-tender candidate.

Castro joined the Orioles off waivers from the Guardians on September 3rd and was sent straight to Triple-A, not appearing at the Major League level with the Orioles. Nevertheless, he has pitched in each of the last three MLB seasons, all with different teams — the Tigers in 2020, the Blue Jays in 2021, and the Guardians in 2022.

In 2022 with the Guardians, Castro pitched to a 7.43 ERA in 13 1/3 innings with a poor 18.5% strikeout rate and a high 15.4% walk rate. Castro has had more success in Triple-A Norfolk, authoring a 2.16 ERA in 8 1/3 innings, striking out eight but walking eight. Castro will hit the waiver wire in the next couple days. If he goes unclaimed, he’ll be eligible for minor league free agency this winter and will likely sign another minor league deal with a Spring Training opportunity.

Orioles Outright Anthony Bemboom

Today: Bemboom has accepted the outright assignment, per an announcement from the team.

May 27: Anthony Bemboom has cleared waivers and been outrighted by the Orioles to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The catcher had been designated for assignment last week as the corresponding move to the promotion of star prospect Adley Rutschman.

Bemboom was outrighted by the Dodgers last year, thus making him eligible to reject this outright assignment, like all players who already have one outright on their ledger. At this point, there’s no indication whether Bemboom has accepted or rejected, though there would be some logic either way.

If he were to opt for rejecting, he would become a free agent and look for the best opportunity around the league. However, based on his clearing waivers, that illustrates no team is currently willing to give him a 40-man roster spot and he would only find minor league deals anyway. If he were to accept, he’d likely stay third on the Baltimore catching depth chart behind Rutschman and Robinson Chirinos. The team also has Jacob Nottingham in Triple-A, though that was also the case earlier this year when Bemboom was selected to the big league roster while they waited for Rutschman to recuperate from injury. Although Nottingham is off to a blazing start in Triple-A this year, hitting .268/.417/.607, 168 wRC+.

In his 22 MLB games so far this year, Bemboom has hit .115/.207/.212, though that might be weighed down by a .147 BABIP. On the more encouraging side of things, he did walk in 10.2% of his plate appearances, something that’s not totally without precedent, as he’s often posted good walk rates in Triple-A, as well as in 21 MLB games in 2020 with the Angels, when he walked 11.7% of the time.

Orioles Promote Adley Rutschman

The Orioles announced that they have selected the contract of top prospect Adley Rutschman. Anthony Bemboom has been designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

Of course, this is a day that baseball fans in Baltimore and elsewhere have been looking forward to for quite some time. Even before he was a member of the Orioles organization, Rutschman was tantalizing the baseball world with his performance at Oregon State, shooting up draft boards and considered by many to be the top player available in the 2019 draft. Baseball America, for instance, gave him the #1 slot that year, with their report noting that the switch-hitting catcher had essentially every skill necessary to succeed going forward. Hitting for average, hitting for power, taking walks, strong arm, good receiving and blocking, he had all the tools except speed, which is hardly surprising for a catcher. “He is the best catching prospect since Buster Posey in 2008 and Matt Wieters in 2007,” their report concluded.

Although there were reports that the O’s were considering other players with the first overall selection in the 2019 draft, such as Bobby Witt Jr., Andrew Vaughn and JJ Bleday, it never seemed like there was much chance of anyone usurping Rutschman. When the big day finally rolled around, Rutschman was indeed the first player off the board.

Due to the struggles of the big league club, Rutschman instantly became the light at the end of the tunnel for Baltimore fans. The Orioles finished last in the AL East in both 2017 and 2018, and were in the process of repeating that feat when Rutschman was drafted in 2019. They somehow slipped past the Red Sox and into fourth place in the shortened 2020 season, but were back down in the basement in 2021, and also posted the worst record in baseball again (tied with the Diamondbacks). That means they have the first overall selection in the draft yet again this summer. With nothing inspiring happening at the big league level, all hopes were pinned on the stars in the farm system that would make up the next great Orioles team, with Rutschman being front and center.

Baseball America ranked Rutschman the fifth-best prospect in all of baseball in 2021, then bumping him up to #2 last year and #1 this year. He’s also considered the best prospect in baseball by FanGraphs, ESPN’s Kiley McDaniels, and The Athletic’s Keith Law.

It’s been an atypical rise through the minors for the 24-year-old. It started out normal enough, with Rutschman getting into 37 games in the lower levels of the Orioles’ system in the months after the draft. But the pandemic wiped out the minor leagues in 2020, meaning he wasn’t able to play in any official organized games. But that missed season didn’t slow him down any, as his 2021 proved the hype was for real. In 123 games between Double-A and Triple-A, he hit 23 home runs and produced an overall batting line of .285/.397/.502, walking at a 14.5% rate and striking out only 16.6% of the time. That all adds up to a wRC+ of 144, or 44% better than league average.

The Orioles did little to block his path to the big leagues this offseason. The catchers who got playing time behind the plate in 2021 were all jettisoned from the roster. Pedro Severino, Austin Wynns and Nick Ciuffo were all outrighted at season’s end and Chance Sisco was claimed off waivers by the Mets. There was a time in the offseason that the club actually had no catchers on the 40-man roster, although they eventually signed Robinson Chirinos to be in the mix.

Once the new collective bargaining agreement was agreed to and the lockout ended in March, it seemed there was a chance Rutschman could crack the Opening Day roster. The new CBA featured incentives to try and discourage teams from holding their best prospects down in the minors at the beginning of a season in order to manipulate their service time and gain an extra year of control over their services. Unfortunately, Rutschman suffered a triceps strain in mid-March that put him on the shelf for a few weeks, ending any chance of him being ready for the season opener. After recuperating from that injury, he made his 2022 debut in the minors on April 26 and has spent the past four weeks getting back into game shape. In 19 games this year across three different levels, he’s hitting .309/.427/.515, 159 wRC+, walking in 13.4% of his plate appearances while striking out in just 8.5% of them.

There are about 137 days remaining in the season, meaning he will be unable to accrue the 172 days necessary to count as a full year. There is a provision in the new CBA that grants a full year of service time to the top two finishers in Rookie of the Year voting, though it will be difficult for Rutschman to take that path now, given that his competitors in that race have a six-week headstart on him. Jeremy Pena has already produced 1.8 fWAR, while other prominent rookies like Bobby Witt Jr. and Julio Rodriguez have 0.8 fWAR during their first MLB seasons.

Assuming Rutschman isn’t able to catch up and finishes this season with less than a year of service time, the O’s will control his services through the 2028 season, though he does have a very good shot at qualifying for arbitration after the 2024 season as a Super Two player. (The Super Two cutoff moves from year to year but has only been above 2.137 three times since 2009, with the last instance coming back in 2012.) Now that he’s reached the big time, the club will be hoping that he and the other prospects that are still to come will help the Orioles start turning the page from rebuilding to competing over those coming years.

With Rutschman injured to start the year, the club selected Bemboom’s contract, pairing him with Chirinos as the club’s catching duo. In 22 games on the year, he’s hit a meager .115/.207/.212. Since he’s out of options, the club had little choice but to designate him for assignment in order to make room for their star prospect. Bemboom will likely hit the waiver wire in the coming days and see if there’s another club in the league that’s interested in his services.

Orioles To Select Anthony Bemboom, Chris Owings

The Orioles have finalized their Opening Day roster, which will include non-roster invitees Chris Owings and Anthony Bemboom, manager Brandon Hyde announced to reporters this morning (Twitter link via Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com). Both will need to be selected to the team’s 40-man roster, but the O’s have a pair of open spots, so no corresponding moves will be necessary (barring additional activity on the waiver wire, trade market, free agency, etc.).

Owings, 30, went 6-for-26 with a homer and three doubles in 26 plate appearances during Spring Training, though he also posted an unsightly 10-to-1 K/BB ratio. A lack of walks isn’t a new issue for Owings, who has drawn a free pass in just 5.4% of his 2396 career plate appearances at the MLB level. Owings briefly appeared with the Rockies in each of the past two seasons, hitting a combined .298/.372/.536 in a tiny sample of 94 trips to the plate.

Owings’ broader track record is that of an OBP-challenged utilityman with a bit of pop and above-average speed, evidenced by a lifetime .243/.288/.372 batting line, 37 homers and 78 steals. He smacked a career-high 12 home runs with the D-backs in 2017 and averaged 15 steals per year as a primarily part-time player in Arizona from 2015-18. Owings has experience playing each of shortstop, second base, third base and all three outfield slots. He grades out as a well-below-average defender at short but has average or better defensive marks at every other position, per Defensive Runs Saved. DRS pegs him as a plus defender at second base, though other metrics like Ultimate Zone Rating and Outs Above Average have him closer to a scratch defender there. Owings will likely hold down a utility spot with the O’s to begin the year.

As for Bemboom, he’ll serve as Baltimore’s backup behind veteran starter Robinson Chirinos. All eyes in Baltimore will be on top overall prospect Adley Rutschman, the 2019 No. 1 overall pick and the clear catcher of the future, but he was stalled in Spring Training by a triceps injury. He’s still ramping up toward game action and will likely require some minor league work before the O’s even consider bringing him up to the big league roster.

In the meantime, Bemboom will get some big league time for a fourth consecutive season. He made his big league debut with the Rays in 2019 before being traded to the Angels, where he’s spent a fair bit of time on the big league roster. In 54 total Major League games and 144 plate appearances, the 32-year-old Bemboom is a .178/.241/.287 hitter. He went 4-for-13 with a double during Spring Training and carries a career .252/.347/.398 batting line in parts of five Triple-A seasons.

Orioles Sign Anthony Bemboom To Minor League Deal

The Orioles have signed catcher Anthony Bemboom to a minor league contract, the team informed reporters (including Dan Connolly of the Athletic). Bemboom was eligible to sign a minors pact during the lockout because he’d been passed through outright waivers by the Dodgers midseason and elected minor league free agency at the end of the year.

The 31-year-old backstop has appeared briefly in each of the last three MLB seasons, tallying 144 cumulative plate appearances between the Rays and Angels. He’s a .178/.241/.287 hitter with four home runs in that time. The left-handed hitter owns a more solid .250/.347/.398 line over parts of five seasons at Triple-A.

Bemboom adds some much-needed depth to the top of the Orioles’ farm system. Baltimore doesn’t have a single backstop on the 40-man roster. Top prospect Adley Rutschman looks likely to get the bulk of playing time next season after hitting his way up through Triple-A. It’s possible Rutschman begins the 2022 season back in Norfolk, particularly if service time continues to be relevant in determining a player’s free agency trajectory in the next collective bargaining agreement. Even were Rutschman to break camp, the O’s would need at least one 40-man addition to serve as a backup. Baltimore also added Jacob Nottingham on a minor league pact last week.

Dodgers Make Two Waiver Claims; Kershaw, Duffy Transferred To 60-Day IL

The Dodgers announced Monday that they’ve claimed catcher Anthony Bemboom off waivers from the Angels and right-hander Conner Greene off waivers from the Orioles. In order to open space on the 40-man roster, Los Angeles transferred left-handers Danny Duffy and Clayton Kershaw to the 60-day injured list. The “60-day” minimum on those IL stints for Duffy and Kershaw begin with their initial placement on the IL — July 20 for Duffy and July 7 for Kershaw. Duffy would be eligible to return on Sept. 18 and Kershaw on Sept. 5.

Bemboom, 31, has batted .213/.302/.347 in 88 plate appearances with the Angels over the past two seasons. He’s also logged some very brief big league time with the Rays. While Bemboom hasn’t hit much in the Majors through a small sample’s worth of career games, he’s a .256/.349/.410 hitter in parts of five Triple-A seasons. He also boasts an excellent 35 percent caught-stealing rate behind the dish and has been credited with solid framing marks at Baseball Prospectus, FanGraphs and Statcast.

The Angels designated Bemboom for assignment over the weekend when claiming fellow catcher Chad Wallach off waivers from the Marlins. Bemboom will now head to the Dodgers and provide some experienced depth for a club that just traded away top catching prospect Keibert Ruiz in the Max Scherzer/Trea Turner blockbuster.

Greene, 26, made his Major League debut with the Orioles this season but was hit hard in 3 2/3 innings. The former Blue Jays, Royals and Cardinals minor leaguer surrendered six runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts in his short time with the O’s and has had a similarly rough go of it in Triple-A this year (7.09 ERA in 20 2/3 frames).

That said, Greene averaged nearly 96 mph with his heater with the Orioles and posted strong swinging-strike and opponents’ chase rates. Greene was a prospect of note for several years, drawing 70 grades on his heater and 55s and 60s on his changeup (on the 20-80 scale). He’s had control problems throughout his minor league tenure (11.2 percent walk rate), but the Dodgers are ostensibly intrigued by his raw stuff and may have their own ideas about how to maximize his potential. Greene can be optioned for the rest of the season but will be out of minor league options in 2022.

The news of Kershaw moving to the 60-day IL shouldn’t be a huge surprise after manager Dave Roberts recently said he expected his left-hander to be out until September. Duffy’s move to the 60-day IL, however, is a bit more surprising. Royals general manager Dayton Moore said not long before trading Duffy to the Dodgers that he expected the southpaw to return sometime in mid-August. The Dodgers were of course able to perform their own assessment of Duffy’s medicals and were aware of the risk of a lengthier absence, but they were still probably hoping to get Duffy back on the mound sooner than this. If the remainder of his rehab from a flexor strain goes well, Duffy can still be an option for the season’s final few weeks and a bullpen candidate in the postseason.

Angels Claim Chad Wallach Off Waivers From Dodgers

The Angels have claimed catcher Chad Wallach off waivers from the Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A, per the team. In a corresponding move, Anthony Bemboom has been designated for assignment.

Wallach never appeared with the Dodgers in the Majors after being claimed off waivers from the Marlins. The Dodgers had hoped Wallach could serve as backstop insurance for Will Smith and Austin Barnes after the deadline departure of Keibert Ruiz. Still, he was only an extra man for the Dodgers, who still have Tim Federowicz in the organization as their presumptive third catcher.

As for Wallach, he heads to the Angels, where he will slot in behind Kurt Suzuki and Max Stassi in the depth chart. Most of Wallach’s Major League playing time came with the Marlins over the last four seasons, though he did make his debut with the Reds back in 2017. In total, he owns a .207/.271/.303 line across 231 plate appearances.

As for Bemboom, the 31-year-old heads to the waiver wire. While his success in the bigs has been fleeting — from an offensive standpoint — he’s having a nice year at Triple-A this season, slashing .255/.364/.482 in 165 trips to the plate.

AL Notes: Rengifo, Wilson, Biggio, Allen, Hamilton

The Angels announced they’ve optioned catcher Anthony Bemboom and infielders Luis Rengifo and Jack Mayfield. None of that trio will make the Opening Day roster. That’s a bit surprising in Rengifo’s case, since he had looked like the favorite to open the year as Los Angeles’ top infielder off the bench. The Angels optioning out Rengifo and Mayfield could be good news for non-roster invitee Jose Rojas, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com was among those to point out. The 28-year-old Rojas has yet to make his MLB debut but has mashed at a .321/.487/.607 clip in Spring Training. Optioning out Bemboom, meanwhile, suggests the Angels will open the year with a catching tandem of Max Stassi and Kurt Suzuki.

Angels Acquire Anthony Bemboom

The Angels announced that they’ve acquired catcher Anthony Bemboom from the Rays for cash considerations.

This is the second transaction of the day involving Bemboom, whom the Rays designated for assignment in the afternoon. The 29-year-old had been on the 60-day injured list for two-plus months before then because of a knee issue, but his return led to his departure from Tampa Bay.

Bemboom is now reuniting with the Angels, who spent a 22nd-round pick on him in the 2012 draft. He was with the club until Colorado grabbed him in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft, though Bemboom never reached the majors in two seasons in the Rockies organization. He debuted in MLB earlier this year with the Rays, who signed him to a minor league deal in the offseason, logging just five plate appearances prior to his injury. Over a far larger sample size of 636 PA at the minors’ highest level, Bemboom has slashed .250/.341/.381 with 11 home runs.

The Angels’ acquisition of Bemboom comes on the verge of surgery for starting catcher Jonathan Lucroy, who will undergo a procedure to repair a nasal fracture Tuesday. Lucroy last played June 7, when he was involved in a gruesome collision at home plate with Astros outfielder Jake Marisnick, and will miss at least three more weeks. The Angels have turned to Dustin Garneau and Kevan Smith in his absence. Bemboom will provide further insurance as Lucroy recovers.
