The Roki Sasaki frenzy is nearing its completion. Several teams have reportedly been told that they won’t be signing the right-hander and now Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Dodgers, Padres and Blue Jays are the three finalists. The Cubs are no longer in the running, according to Mike Rodriguez, with Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic adding that the Cubs have been informed of their status.
It seems that today was the day that Sasaki and his reps started informing teams that had been eliminated from the running. Earlier today, various reports indicated that the Giants, Yankees, Mets, Rangers and Diamondbacks would not be signing Sasaki. The Mariners were vaguely connected to Sasaki at times and hadn’t been expressly eliminated, but it seems they didn’t make it to the podium as one of the top three.
Sasaki’s decision has been one of the biggest wild cards hanging over the offseason. Since he’s coming over to the big leagues before his 25th birthday, he’s considered an amateur under MLB rules and is therefore subject to the international bonus pool system. As such, no club could be initially ruled out just based on economics, as is usually the case with other free agents.
Each team gets an annual pool of money that they are allowed to spend on international amateurs. This year’s pools are in the $5-8MM range, with the smaller-market clubs mostly having the slightly larger ones. Teams can trade for more pool space but they can’t increase their initial allotment by more than 60%. A posting fee will also be owed to the Chiba Lotte Marines, Sasaki’s former club in Japan, though that will only add 20% of the bonus. As such, each team has roughly the same ability to pay Sasaki a few million bucks.
Sasaki is likely therefore to decide based on factors beyond money. After all, if money was his top priority, he probably would have waited until he turned 25. That’s what Yoshinobu Yamamoto did, which led to a $325MM deal from the Dodgers.
No one can say for sure what Sasaki is prioritizing, though the Dodgers and Padres have been seen as logical suitors for a while now. Both clubs are on the West Coast, which is closer to Japan, perhaps a favorable factor when considering the flights for Sasaki and his family members. The Dodgers also have a strong reputation as a whole, having made the postseason in each year going back to 2013, with a fresh World Series victory in 2024. The Padres don’t have quite the same track record of success but have been good in recent years.
Both clubs also have Japanese players on the roster, with the Dodgers having Yamamoto and Ohtani, while the Padres have Yu Darvish. Some reports have suggested Sasaki and Darvish have an especially close relationship.
The Jays have been floated as a landing spot for Sasaki far less than the Dodgers or Padres, which is sensible. They are not on the West Coast. They had a strong run of contention from 2020 to 2023 but are coming off a down season. They had Yusei Kikuchi until last year’s trade deadline but don’t currently have a Japanese player on the roster.
In April of 2023, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote that “Some Japanese players are uncomfortable being major-league teammates with other Japanese players because of the importance of seniority in Japan’s hierarchical culture, major-league executives and agents say.” That piece was examining the possibility of Ohtani singing with the Mets when they already had Kodai Senga on the roster. Sasaki’s agent Joel Wolfe has downplayed the importance of a club having Japanese players on its roster, either positively or negatively. “That was never a topic of discussion,” Wolfe said last month, per Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.
It’s possible that Sasaki will be attracted to playing in another country for other reasons. Wolfe has suggested that the Japanese media was often unkind to Sasaki, which could perhaps make it preferable for him to be in a smaller market. Toronto isn’t exactly a small market but it would be further away from the American media spotlight. The Blue Jays are also owned by Rogers Communications, the media company that broadcasts the club’s games on television and radio. Perhaps that would allow the Jays to promise Sasaki a more guarded environment in terms of media access. Toronto is also a city with a reputation for its diversity and relatively low crime rates.
Those are all speculative arguments, but the same could be said about the arguments for Sasaki preferring Los Angeles or San Diego. Sasaki and Wolfe have given very few clues about what will be used to make the final decision, leaving the baseball world to mostly guess.
Whatever he decides will likely have ripple effects into the rest of the offseason. The Padres have a tight budget and needs all over their roster. Trading Dylan Cease is reportedly one potential solution to their situation, which would perhaps become more likely if they sign Sasaki. The Dodgers already have lots of rotation options and might consider a trade of their own if they add Sasaki. That’s perhaps less likely with the Jays, who have been trying to add a starting pitcher all winter without success thus far.
There will also be domino effects elsewhere. Whichever team signs Sasaki will likely have to walk away from verbal commitments to teenagers in Latin America, as they will need to redirect bonus money to Sasaki. That will lead to those players then looking for other clubs. Some of this has seemingly already started to happen, as the Pirates are reportedly going to sign Darell Morel, a Dominican shortstop that had previously been committed to the Dodgers.
It won’t take long for all of these knock-on effects to really ramp up. Sasaki’s posting window closes on January 23, meaning resolution will be coming in less than a week. He can’t officially sign until January 15, when the new international signing period begins, though it’s possible an agreement could be reported before then.
So now the hype begins.
As if, signing Sasaki by the Padres will fill the need at lf, catcher and the bench.
The Seidler Bros want to hide out behind a potential Sasaki signing.
Well…if the Padres miss out on Sasaki, with all the hype that has been pumped into a potential signing by the Padres…
The letdown will be legendary.
I’ve never muted anyone here but you maybe the first
And, who are you?
@towinagain – go a little further… I think you should quote lyrics from The Who’s “Who Are You” 😀
Who who, who who…
Who are you…
Anyway, wonder how the Padres and others are dealing with Latin American prospects. Failure to sign Sasaki will leave funds for other signings, like possibly Salas’ brother.
…tell me who…..
I woke up in a Soho doorway, a policeman knew my name
I can understand the Dodgers and Padres but why the Jays?
Out here in left field,,,
Dewey: It does seem strange. Maybe because he just met with them and is still processing what they said, but it’s going to be the Dodgers, though I hope it’s the Padres.
You don’t have the baseballs to mute him
You should self mute and get the jump on yourself may be ? Or is that maybe?
towin lives in an alternate reality, even his picture is wrong.
I don’t understand why the padre have not been eliminated, trying to trade 3 or 4 player and need to cut 50,000,000 to cover raises. then there the lawsuit which will cause the team to be sold and may be relocated, this may take year and padres will not add players for years.
Oh hey Larry I mean towin’s alt.
Big lols
What does it really mean when a nobody know-nothing asks “who are you”?
Die how about from a movie?
Mariners Fans:
So there’s still a chance?
Aloha Gwynning, I sure hope your Padres or Toronto end up with Roki or baseball is broken, imho. As much as I wanted him on my Cubs, the system sucks.
Manfred has been terrible as commissioner and Clark no better on the player side. Roki is a restricted FA. I think the MLB needs to combine if possible the restricted players from Asia and the younger players out of Latin America into some type of a draft/lottery. Increase the bonus pools as salaries and bonuses are going up. Do it right after the posting period begins out of the NPB in Japan and if any process out of the KBO.
Then as another Cub fan, here named Capi, said to me, the MLB should enforce a 30 day rule for all unrestricted free agents including those out of Japan and Asia, along with their domestic counterparts here in the US, must sign their new contracts within 30 days of the end to the WS.
I’m all for it. Can’t stand this circus and one team dominating the system. There needs to be a standard by which all teams have to abide by. Today it’s the Dodgers, in the past the Yankees. I’d like to eliminate this type of perceived collusion/drama. But as I learned in marketing years ago, any and all publicity many times is welcomed because it keeps “you” in the spotlight, news cycle. Not sure the next CBA agreement fixes anything. I can’t wait for Manfred to go.
Anyhow, good luck to your Padres. Mahalo Nui!
Toronto is closer to Japan if he takes the northern route over the top of the earth.
Good luck to your Cubbies, kg! Love your posts, your respect for Yu-san and, as always, chatting with you! A hui ho brah, aloha pumehana.
Some religions consider that a sin.
I thought he was Misfits alt.
stymee- Could all be the same turd, wtf do I know? Lol
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pity?
Didn’t we know all along it’d be between the west coast dodgers and padres? As far as equity between the haves and have nots, forget it! When the dodgers get Dasaki, they’ll be set up to win the whole damn thing for he next 8-10 years. But ask them of they care about competitive fairness because it’s all about winning!
dewey – Toronto is ranked the 15th-best city in the world. It is extremely clean, safe, and has so much to offer when it comes to entertainment, dining and nightlife. A young kid like Roki will have the time of his life. He would really enjoy the Toronto Film Festival which is a very big thing. Lots of celebs live there, lots of movies are filmed there, great music scene.
And the Jays are desperate for a star pitcher, they haven’t had one since Doc (RIP).
New US president plan is to make travel to and from US more restrictive to foreigners, so waiting until after Jan 20 makes sense.? Canada could be his best option.
Brew – That would impact ground travel, not air travel.
Pretty sure Roki and his family will be flying back and forth to Japan, not driving.
dewey: Read the piece. There’s plenty of speculation about that.
kgcubs: MLB can’t “enforce” any rule not collectively bargained with the MLBPA.
Would you be happier if there was no union and players were vulnerable to exploitation by MLB and the owners as they were before Marvin Miller showed up and the reserve system was ruled illegal?
Toronto not on fire?
KG- Hoyer’s plan A was always one of his personal pets Rea. Sasaki took one look at how Hoyer took a dump on Kyle Tucker and the pitiful record at signing big time FA’s and knew he wasn’t getting big money to play for the Cubs. EVER. So why bother?
Where do you work did you get to choose where you work?
Why would you you want to limit the talent coming into your league? You can’t lessen teams geographical advantage lol. Whining and crying that the dodgers are ran correctly. It’s good for baseball. Baseball is better when all the dumb fans have one team to hate.
toronto is not a clean city. it is far dirtier than most american cities. There is a real problem with homelessness, street crime and affordability. They have the highest car theft rate in North America. It is dump there now. It was ok 25 years ago maybe
John Dan: Sasaki will have enough money to afford Toronto.
Bruce – There seems to be an epidemic of know it all predictions here.
He could go to any of the 3 teams, otherwise he would have eliminated one or two of them already.
How many people were certain he’d wait until 25 to be posted? For some reason they don’t remind everyone about being wrong about that.
are you…
Blue Jays have ace facilities in Florida and Toronto, a wealthy owner, a plan and the will to compete. It’s why they were a finalist for Ohtani and Soto.
A domed stadium, heated in Spring and Fall, and air conditioned in summer when roof needs to be closed.
And Sasaki won’t have to compete for profile in Toronto against Ohtani et al.
Toronto has a record of treating Japanese players well, and is the most diverse community in North America.
Plus I imagine the Blue Jays understand the hot buttons that appealed to Ohtani last year.
ping – With all due respect, Toronto also has a reputation of very casual fans attending games just so they can get tanked.
There’s been several ugly incidents in Rogers Centre, including a “fan” throwing a half-full can of beer at an Asian player on the field.
And in another incident, a thrown beer can nearly hit a baby in the crowd.
youtube.com/watch?v=eljdmtrSawc
But they won’t win the whole thing for the next 8-10 years. That’s the beauty of the game. You can win on paper, but you gotta play the games. There’s a reason why LA is stocked up on starters as you can’t count on a repeat of ‘24 with only 3 reliable starters in October.
178iq: Without being able to prove any of that, which we know you can’t, you just sound nutty.
While you are a very knowledgeable commenter from what I have seen I have to say I find it amusing that a Red Sox fan is talking about another team’s fans misbehaving. There have been more than a few incidents at Fenway over the years.
pingston – Yes, this explains why they are still “technically” in the final three but I’m sure the Dodgers will prevail. That’s who I would choose if I was him. Winning is everything and the advantage you would get from playing for the Dodgers to win the World Series every year is too much to pass up. Dodgers should have a sustained chance of winning for the next 5 years at least. I want to change my allegiance from the Jays to the Dodgers but I ain’ t built that way. I am loyal to my team even though I will continue to be dragged for it by my team’s owners and management and other team’s fans. Unfortunately this is the life of some fans.
I recall someone almost murdered for the jersey they were wearing at Dodgers game but this is the same ballpark? What about the time Baltimore played in an empty stadium due to riots.
Jays – Thank you and just for some background, I have connections to the GTA and have been to many games at Rogers Centre going back many years so I’m not going by just what I’ve heard.
I keep it real, good or bad. Red Sox fans can be loud and rude but they don’t have the reputation for throwing stuff onto the field like Jays fans do. Probably because Fenway is much smaller and more expensive, which keeps out that certain troublemaker element.
There’s been no non-verbal incidents at Fenway that I’m aware of …. nothing compared to Yankee Stadium, Philly or LAD/SF.
@JohnDan
I disagree, spent a week there this past summer and in parts of town that were not touristy — it’s a lovely town and much cleaner than most East Coast major cities (I’m on the East Coast, so I did not want to speak for cities I haven’t recently visited).
I may agree that the cost of real estate may be high but not disproportionately versus metro areas like DC.
larry48:
They aren’t trying to “trade 3 or 4 players”…they aren’t trying to “cut $50 mil” either.
No need to even respond to the team moving comment just because Peters’ widow wants more control.
Ridiculous
Maybe stick to your own team…..hopefully you know more about them
If they sign Sasaki they probably trade Cease to free up $ to sign Profar.
If they don’t sign Roki they probably trade Arraez to sign Profar.
They are trying to trade ONE player depending on the Roki decision.
They are trying to keep payroll just under the CBT ceiling….which is like $15 mil……..not $50
Must be a dodger fan?
Nobody really knows what their payroll will actually be.
Roki will cost additional money since they have to pay the posting fee. It’s not a ton of money but it’s not nothing either.
Padres are about 1.5m over the tax line atm. Perhaps they will try and dip below it, perhaps they will go over it.
Waiting on Roki will help them see where they need to use their resources. Getting Roki and they may not need another starter. Not getting him may mean they spend on a starter. Who knows if they trade anyone to free up money to feel those other holes. They could just trade minor leaguers for in inexpensive players.
Player to be named: It’s impossible for a player to be named in the past. That makes your username redundant.
They are 1.5 over now but want/need to sign Profar.
Where they go next all depends on Roki.
His signing is the reason SD hasn’t made a bunch of moves yet…not because they are slashing payroll.
Where they go with Cease/Arraez etc all depends on what happens with Sasaki
Maybe he has a Titanic fetish and wants to do some Jack Dawson cosplay….
Dude give it a rest. Sasaki is an international stud, we need him.
The Padres will be a contender in 2025.
For what?
I never understood conclusions way down a rabbit hole.
1st probable reason=nope.
But the 89th most probable is default conclusion.
@cadagan You obnoxiously aren’t familiar with Occam’s Dull, Secondhand Butter Knife theory.
Do you ever have anything positive to say? I didn’t think so.
That’s why gms and teams shouldn’t tell the simpletons who they’re interested in so the simpletons don’t get upset when they don’t get them through no fault of their own.
ThatsIT –
Yeah this is Jays management’s problem the last few years. They talk too much before the market starts and tell everyone they will be in on everything which gets their fans super excited even though management knows they aren’t getting any of the big guys. I guess they have increased the payrolls of the Dodgers and Mets which could potentially take those teams out of the running for some of the other mid-tier free agents which is great but the Jay’s fans don’t care about that. They want managements head on a stake.
As a Texas Rangers fan, I am disappointed that we are out of the running, but at least I am not a San Diego Padres fan. That feels like a sinking ship right now. The only reason someone might sign there is to hang out with Yu Darvish and watch teams like the Rangers invest in building a winner. Sure, we have faced challenges too, but we spent wisely this year, and we can proudly say we were 2023 champions—something San Diego cannot claim!
Thank you Dr.
“The possibility of Ohtani singing with the Mets when they already had Kodai Senga on the roster.”
Who knew, Ohtani can sing too!
Ohtani is alto and Senga is suprano. Think of the Harmonies!
Come on Padres!!!
Who is tracking the private jets
Jon Morosi
I’m ready to be hurt again
Jon heyman is gonna say he’s a blue jay because a private jet from Japan to Toronto is going to happen on the 15th
Heh, I forgot about that!!! Only thing missing was the LeBron like thirty minute special! Decision 2024, Hunt for Ohtani
Roku Sasaki is on his way to LA.
How nice of him to stop to help the victims.
So we’re doing this again, huh?
The Dodgers could at least be considerate and mail us a towel and some cigarettes this time.
– Blue Jays fan
And a gift basket.
I get it
Jeter and his infamous gift baskets doing PR for LA now?
A man’s gotta eat and he’s married now with kids yet old habits die hard.
Gwynning: What gift baskets?
His denial wasn’t very convincing, not against the 50 or so “witnesses” that claimed otherwise, Blue! Who really knows, and beyond this joke or two, I couldn’t care less. I’m guilty of similar tactics. Haha
Lol. He has denied it but it’s a funny rumor nonetheless. He did have a no-phone policy at his apt. “What do you mean I can’t do Tik Toks and Snaps here?! My followers will think I’m dead! I’m outta here, dude!”
Lol
Padres are the only right answer.
No matter how good he is, he’ll be just one of many on the Dodgers.
The Jays are a plane falling outta the sky, five minutes from impact. No point jumping on board.
SD gives him a competitive environment and a chance to prove himself in what looks to be a tough division.
Yup. Their core is also in place for years. Come on Roki! You’ll love San Diego!
An overpaid core that underachieves every season.
Until the Seidler bros. start to trade them off.
The Seidler brothers are out for all intents and purposes. Matt will be removed as trustee over the trust that holds the largest ownership share in the next few days. John will not become control person. Bob, whose wife is the one that sent the now infamous racist texts that were entered as evidence in the lawsuit, will not be reinstated as trustee and may lose his position with the team.
The only Seidler’s that will still be involved with the team will be Sheel and Peter’s brother Tom.
In SD he could become a hero, in LA, lost in the mix.
Lost in the mix? You’re delusional.
Once all the pitchers leave and get traded Cease and company. He will be all alone and pressure will be on his side. In LA no pressure at all with a 6 man rotation. He will be making money in endorsements there and not in SD. He will learn from the best pitchers and coaching staff. No brainer LA is going to get him
In LA sasaki will join the Death Star and help cause 80% of fans to quit baseball
Lots of people quit basketball after the warriors signed Kevin Durant after winning 73, who knows what happens with baseball when the dodgers go full throttle
Wouldn’t be surprised if they won 117 games
Dodgers signing an essentially league minimum player that has the same offer from everyone is going to cause 80% of fans to quit baseball?
If Sasaki signs with the Dodgers he will be the most hated rookie in all of baseball.
Sasakis agent should express that to him, you sign in LA and you will be hated across MLB. You’re playing third fiddle to the Ohtani and Yamamoto, you’re not getting major endorsement deals because those two already saturate that market. It’s all downside except for winning but no one will care that you won.
Sasaki isn’t a nobody he is one of the most talented pitchers on the planet
MLB is not going to experience ANY decrease in fandom by bringing in a top tier international talent.
I’ll take the under on 117 games if they get Roki, too.
drasco: First of all, most top players are hated by someone and they manage to go on. Sasaki probably speaks little if any English, so fans can hurl all the bad names they can think of at him and I doubt he’d care. Second, he might be on the same pitching level as Yamamoto and Ohtani. Another Big Fish in a Big Pond. The luxury tax is supposed to be a deterrent against building teams like the Dodgers have but obviously it isn’t It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out at the next CBA meetings.
Drasco- that is almost universally wrong. And by “almost”, I mean universally wrong.
Snell and blown out arms? Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
In LA he doesn’t have to be the man everytime. He will be surrounded by studs. He grows into the ace. Perfect. He will be treated well. It’s a win win if he signs with La. However as a dodger fan it’s embarrassing to have such riches. Great time to be a dodger fan.
Yeah just like how Reddie didn’t become a hero after hitting that grand slam in game 1 lol.
you’re just flat out wrong in this assessment.
No, but in Philly they do throw batteries at them, and boo Santa Claus…
He’s also a total unknown to 99% of fans who don’t visit sites like this. How his stuff will perform in the majors is unknown. How limited his innings will be is also unknown. Will he start in the minors? Will he adjust well to being away from Japan? He will be a low cost risk (if reneging on all your previous agreements can be considered low cost) but for those expecting more than 4th starter performance this year, you may be disappointed.
Actually, the injury risk is all that worries me about Roki. He had some injuries last year and he will be extra amped up to show he is ready for MLB stardom. Worth the risk many times over for all 30 teams, but I think he should have waited two years to get the massive payday.
You were going great until the end…117 games? 137 would have tied the room together
sad tormented: Why didn’t fans quit baseball when the Yankees won 114 games and three World Series in four years?
Why didn’t fans quit basketball when the Bulls with Jordan and company won six titles in eight years?
You can’t answer that, can you?
Drasco: Who would hate him and why? Don’t project your own BS.
@gallunatic.
Don’t feed the trolls.
Trust me they won’t quit watching baseball they will miss writing the same five jokes on mlbtr.
“Fans don’t boo nobodies”.
That’s false. I booed John Kurk plenty snd threw batteries at him many times.
This is a harsh take.
He’s 23 years old and about to embark on a career outside of his home country, in a novel place where he doesn’t speak the language fluently. I don’t see how anyone can castigate him for wanting to be with fellow countrymen, friends and mentors who can help him adjust. Further, he won’t be paid what he’s worth the 1st six years of his contract.
To say that this young 23 year old will be “hated” is unempathetic. “No one will care that you won.” Again, another hot take. If Roki ‘s health and talent show out, he’ll contribute and people will care.
You’re mis-reading the commenter above you, They’re not saying Roki is a nobody. They’re saying he’s getting boo-ed because people know who he is.
They cheered Steve peirce ,but let’s pretend he’s a somebody right.
Blue Baron, Only a moron would not realize this, just like only a moron would not realize that the Dodgers are ruining baseball.
I’m a huge supporter of big market franchises going above the luxury tax to compete, they should, what the Cubs are doing right now is an embarrassment (being a large market franchise and cutting payroll) but the next CBA negotiations are going to be a disaster. Owners are going to fight tooth and nail to prevent how the Dodgers, Mets and Yankees have been spending, which means very strong luxury tax penalties which then means players are going to fight because of the artificial salary cap argument.
Drasco: And only a guy with a weak BS axe to grind would resort to calling those who disagree morons because said axe is so weak to begin with.
They actually threw ice balls at Santa Claus. Was a sad time to be from Philly.
I actually just call morons, morons. I don’t suffer fools. Don’t know what else to tell you.
If your feelings got hurt, I honestly don’t care.
Drasco: It certainly takes one to know one, so it’s nice to know we’re in good company.
Yeah , congrats to you. I wish the Jay’s had good management. They have an owner with the money. Who is willing to spend some of it, but just can’t click on that third thing. I’m very jealous right now.
Drasco0366 –
So you’re a huge supporter of big market franchises going above the luxury tax to compete only when it’s the team you root for? I can’t stand it when jealous small minded people are so petty.
I know this will fall on deaf ears but grow up!
The lunatic says someone else is delusional.
Yeah. I noticed that statue of him being put up outside Dodger Stadium. That must be what all the renovations are about, right?
The Padres have no proven track record of winning far into the post season, they have no recent significant pitcher development, and an ownership group that’s quarreling. All they’re got is a pitcher in Yu Darvish that will be around for the next two years.
LA offers the opposite of everything the padres can.
Gal- Roki has been throwing about 100 innings in his career.
Let’s see…how did Lugo and King do? Two guys who never threw many innings before joining the padres. Padres have one of the best pitching coaches in the league.
Their new pitching Lab
Plus Darvish who has already taught Roki some pitches.
A park that is good to pitchers.
Seems like good place to go and continue his development to me.
Padres developed Gore through the minors, but the more important ones have been on the majors where they’ve cultivated King, Lugo, Suarez, Martinez, turned around Hader from a 7+ ERA guy losing the closer job to a guy with a 95 million dollar deal.
Really, every pitcher does better in SD and praises the staff when they leave.
If Roki wants to be in position to make big money in 6 years, let Niebla coach him on a team that could actually improve its win total with him.
Go padres.
Competitive? SD gonna lose over and over and over to LA.
Lol, no, theyre not. They were the better team last year and just laid a 24 inning egg.
They had their best shot last year, and came up short.
the better team generally wins the series
and the better team doesn’t usually go on a 24 inning scoreless streak.
Vermonster
How can you say SD was the better team? LA had the better record and won the division. LA also won in the playoffs over SD so are you clinging to regular season head to head? Don’t get me wrong, SD was very close to LA, but you cannot say SD was “the better team”, just very close.
San Diego will not field a competitive team next season, and likely for some time.
The imminent ’retool’ will only serve to feign effort on behalf of the FO & whoever the ownership is. The hard decision to tear it all down won’t come until the ownership drama is resolved. Probably around ‘27 or ‘28. Just in time to add Jackson Merrill’s name to the list of assets that can be spun to turn the whole thing around. Looks like it’s back to business as usual in sleepy San Diego!
Wall- officially a troll.
What a drag, being one of many stars on a team with the best chance of winning the World Series—into the indefinite future.
It would take an unhealthy ego to be so afraid of not standing out that he’d decide on the doomed Padres or the poorly run Blue Jays.
No matter how good he is he cant fix the bitter divorce that Padres ownership has become. Willingly choose that over LA or Toronto and I’d question his mental capacity.
@empirejim – Pffft! Other teams have dealt with ownership squabbles. I don’t think it’s going to be a major issue for the Padres either. MLB has their own procedure for handling ownership transfers. While it’s possible the final solution will be sale of the team at some point, I think Sheel and “the Bros” will find a solution with help from the court and lotsa lawyering. If not… Kutsenda to the rescue?? LOL
Why would a 23 yr old be focused on ownership issues ? He’s shooting to develop into the best pitcher in the universe and then later get a yoshinobu contract later … he can take the mound at petco and ignore the white noise
@Mark – Bingo. When he’s ready to sign for big bucks in six years if the Padres are continuing to have cash flow issues, he may follow Snell’s course of action and join the Dodgers (or some other team) at that point in his career.
That logic would have made the Mariners number 1 on his list!!
If he’s smart, he’s looking at the direction the team is headed. Padres not only have ZERO FA spending this winter, they are also actively trying to cut payroll even more. A team going in reverse with legal battles sure to drag out ad nauseum. You really think the Padres have a history of developing pitchers? More than the Dodgers? I dont think he’s going through all this just for 6 years of tryouts for other suitors. He wants to win and SD is in full retreat.
@baseball – that’s a valid point and I honestly thought the Mariners would make it to at least the top five. I guess we’ll know more of how his decision process played out when he’s introduced to the San Diego media. 😀
Only 5 teams currently have a higher payroll tax number than last year. The padres are one of them. Their payroll is currently 40m more than last years.
The whole cut payroll thing has been overblown. If they wanted to cut payroll they could have easily done so.
Guess we shall see soon enough why he decides. If it was as clear as you say why doesn’t he just say the dodgers?
You’re spot on, Slimm!
If they wanted to shed payroll, they could easily ship out Tatis, Machado, King & Cease. But no one would believe them when they say they’re still trying to win. So, they sell the fanbase on a mythical samurai & how little being a winner matters to him.
It’s not a divorce. The Seidler Bros have never been apart of the team. Nobody even knew who they were until last week.
That will get cleaned up. The padres have their core locked in so the team will be just fine. They also have a GM who has been there a decade.
It is interesting, however, that the Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox and Mets have all been informed they’re out of the running. The Blue Jays remaining in the mix is intriguing.
Lord – Weren’t the Jays the last team that met with him?
That’s usually a good sign.
Yes. That indicates he’s really seriously considering them.
Simm: I’d like to think so, but you have to think long term. Sasaki won’t make a lot for six years. After that, which team is more likely to pay him mega-bucks: Dodgers or Padres?
Interesting subset. I’m not seeing a clear pattern.
He’s going to the dodgers. The end.
It’s wild the Jays are still in this. They’ll finish 3rd, of course, but still wild.
28:1 betting line
I’ll put a 10 spot down on Toronto. Wouldn’t that pith off the west coasters?!!
I doubt they are in on it. More likely they paid Sasaki’s representatives to say they were in on him to buy some favor with their fans who are having a hard time finding anything good to say about this current front office
And the Braves don’t forget them!….Nah I’m kidding we can’t have shiny new things this year apparently.
Id like him to go to the Braves too. Their only Japanese player signing didn’t work.
I will bet my dollars to your dimes that the Braves are one of the eight teams that did not even make a contact with Sasaki. For some reason the Braves virtually ignore international players not from the Caribbean area. A very moronic approach. Well, at least the stinking Mets and Phillies are not getting Sasaki
Rooting for the Blue Jays
Me too.
Padres wouldn’t be bad for an Orioles fan over the 2 as it’s a clear cut of where I want him to go as well.
Ha
Stop torturing us Jays fans!
If the Jays sign him, they better hope they extend Guerrero then even tho I think both are low and I prefer him going to SD over both.
It’s like the NBA now. Where can I play with my friends and make the most advertising money.
He’s coming to a new country where he is not fluent in the language. At a young 23 years, I’m sure it’ll help having Teo fellow countrymen helping with the adaptations.
Teo – Freudian slip?
Well, the Padres have 2 in Darvish and Matsui and the longest tenured translator in baseball.
So the two we all expected and door number 3.
The Blue Jays are a surprise. The other two are not.
10 days and we’ll know. I can hardly wait…haha
Going to Dodgers with all money being defered.
that isn’t how it works
The remaining 29 teams can do the exact same thing. Put a winning product on the field and the fans will come. And if the fans will come then the players will folllow.
Nonsense
Yeah, because all teams have a television contract worth over 330 million a year.
Not 29. Guggenheim Group are growth managers set on increasing the Dodgers brand and value. Diverse and massive assets allow far more flexibility spending on the Dodgers now and later.
Guggenheim Partners does not own the Dodgers. Guggenheim Baseball Management owns the Dodgers and the group of partners includes Mark Walter the CEO of the Guggenheim Partners.
If you truly feel that the remaining 29 teams, not just a couple, can do the same thing, you have your head in the sand.
Players want to win. What these nonsense owners and fans need to learn is that you don’t need a 500Million payroll to win the WS you just need to be talented enough to give yourself a chance. The Dodgers have been to the playoffs what 10+ years in a row, and only have 2 WS rings to show for it.
a 200+ Million payroll is something most teams can afford.
Everybody wants to make money except for the fans, who are being xxxxxx deleted….
I hear he’s on a plane to Toronto. Or wait, is that Ohtani?
ORIGINAL
He was in Toronto on the weekend, and threw baseballs on the field in Rogers Centre as part of his facility tour witnessed by folks looking down from the attached hotel.
As I’ve been saying all along, it’s the Fathers or Artful Dodgers.
When the Jays miss and are again left at the altar for a big name free agent…
Mariner fans were 100% delusional to think they had a chance to get him. It was a big sham and he was only going to the dodgers or the padres…
No income tax though, plus the league’s best pitching lab, friendly media, and an adoring fan base. He could do much worse.
whoop-de-flippin-doo sign already and end this crap. You better be good.
He won’t sign until after January 15 in order to maximize his earnings.
All these theatrics just to make it seem like him going to the dodgers wasn’t predetermined
soldier: You can’t prove anything was predetermined. That just means you’re paranoid.
So if SD get Sasaki, are we to expect a SP be available being a part of their cost-cutting, rather than Arraez?
I would have to assume that will be the case…
For what it’s worth, on the Padres radio station they were assuming the opposite today on the midday show. Thought process was if they can get Sasaki their rotation is set and then they just cut costs in the position player group to address those needs.
Either way it definitely looks like they’re waiting for Sasaki to decide before doing anything
On 97.3? Gwynn & Chris is as close to midday as they have and that is from 3-7 pm. Tony Jr was not on today. Matt Skraby is their producer and he filled in for Tony Jr. Chris didn’t mention cost cutting that I heard. He threw cold water on Suarez being shopped. They did have a segment around 5:20pm about a video taken from one of the apartment buildings around Petco of Sasaki throwing a bullpen at Petco in Padres gear with 15-20 people watching. @MattSkraby said on the show he would post a link to the video.
Here is a link to the show.
audacy.com/stations/973thefansd/shows/gwynn-chris-…
Yeah it was 97.3 but it was Craig Elsten (10-2 slot) who was saying it and I think they had Braden filling in for Annie. The gist I got from what Craig said is he thought if they sign Sasaki they only trade Arraez, not Cease.
I don’t know if I necessarily even agree with it, just thought it was interesting since it’s a different pov.
Thanks. I will go give it a listen.
@cnichols. Was it jon and Jim on 760. It’s 2-6. I think if they trade someone they will for international money that will have to wait until the 15th.
If that’s the case, and Sasaki is aware of it, why on Earth would he go to the Padres?
“If I join the Padres they dump a starter and are little better than when I signed with them.”
There is no chance he signs with Toronto. higher taxes then the land of fruits and nuts and their money is worth less.
Please educate yourself. Player contracts are paid in USD, and they are only taxed at the Canadian rate (which is actually almost the same as the Californian tax rate) in games played at home. I’m tired of people making uneducated comments like this.
paper – And people always forget about the favorable exchange rate.
44% more bang for your buck, that’s quite appealing.
This. In my experience, something that costs $10 CAD in Canada still costs $10 USD in the US.
Dad – Exactly my experience too. The important thing is to NOT exchange USD for CAD at the border, because they will rip you off. I always either use my credit card in Canada, or I withdraw cash from my TD Bank account at a TD ATM in the GTA. That way I get pretty much the full exchange rate. So my $10 CAD purchase results in a $6.92 charge on my US credit card, that’s a helluva savings especially for major purchases like cars.
It’s amazing how the mathematically challenged don’t realize this and end up paying a lot more than they should.
Look at the bright side, CP. By making this comment, it lets us know who the uneducated are, because they are not required to wear a bell around their neck to warn people.
An entire country to market him to
No question about it. I am ready to get my heart broken.
Nah Fins, we good bro. Keep the Faith!
May the power of Pacers sway Roki!
Come on Jays!
We all know it’ll be the Dodgers but fans of AL teams are rooting for the Padres and fans of NL teams are rooting for the Jays.
I’m rooting for the Jays just because they deserve it and it would be funny
rct – I’m rooting for the Jays to get him so I can see him pitch a few more times during each season.
Dodgers are doing what the Yankees tried to do for years. Unfortunately for the rest of the MLB, they’re succeeding.
Eh. Their nucleus of superstars is elderly, and in the three wildcard era they’re not even 25% each year to win the World Series.
No system is going to be impervious to keen intelligence plus maximal resources (and why would you want it to be?) unless you go full Harrison Bergeron, which creates its own problems—probably worse problems.
That’s a giant leap to Vonnegut. Most of the other leagues have salary caps. I doubt the MLB will ever adopt it but that doesn’t mean those leagues are wearing masks and “handicaps.”
I’ll be more than shocked if it’s not a coastal team.
Toronto is on the coast of Lake Ontario. Does that count?
Dodgers by a landslide
I’ll butter your biscuits anytime with that bet, call the game señor!
Ah yes, the Jays being used as leverage again. Nothing new under the Shatkins leadership.
The obvious answer is on the West Coast. The Padres already have Darvish going for them (among other Japanese players that have played for them in the past) and the Dodgers have Ohtani and Yamamoto (among other Japanese players that have played for them in the past as well, not to mention they are arguably the best team in the league).
“arguably”?
Well, depends on who you ask for sure *wink*
Nothing to leverage over
Sure, that definitely explains Ohtani and Soto signing with the Jays… oh wait, no, they were just part of the finalists.
Plus their other swing and misses these past couple of offseasons.
You should get your drivers licence and go around a bit more.
There’s not money involved here…
You clearly know nothing of the team or country. They are owned by the biggest media conglomerate in the country and the games are broadcast nationally. That means to almost 40,000,000 people. They’ve also been top 10 in attendance for years. Maybe try going to a game up there or take your head out of the sand.
As for everyone saying that the Jays are being used as leverage, international signings are capped as to how much they can make. There’s not much to leverage. Having said that two of the three finalists are on the West Coast, which leads me to believe that is likely his preference.
But the Rogers argument means nothing. They only care about the bottom line, and that’s one of the pitfalls of being owned by a conglomerate. Other than the Springer signing of years past (and it’s not aging well), and I guess Gausman, they don’t normally sign the biggest names in FA.
They have only finished in the top 10 of league spending since 2000 8 times (6th in 2024, 7th in 2023, 10th in 2022, 8th in 2018, 10th in 2015, 9th in 2014, 8th in 2013, 10th in 2008 and 2001), as per Cot’s Basebal Contracts… and their most recent teams still couldn’t finish 1st in the division.
True but spending is capped for international FAs so it shouldn’t be a problem to sign him financially. I said too 10 in attendance, not spending. I guess we’ll find out soon enough where he goes although I’m thinking LA unfortunately.
Who are you talking to here? You sound like you’re 13 years old. Stop with the insults because you’re just making yourself look bad.
Says the guy that commented below that the contract will be over 200 million. I wouldn’t be trying to say that I know more than anyone else when I don’t even know that his contract is limited to international signing rules. He won’t be getting anywhere close to that amount.
Troll.
Must have stayed up all night thinking this up.
Dude, read the article. It literally states in paragraph 4 how much he can make on his initial contract as an international amateur. This is not about money or “leverage”.
@C
Not about money but what about the laughs? I think Japanese players like trolling Blue Jays fans for fun.
Baseball started in Canada in the 1830s.
Great players have come from there.
Great weather and support for baseball.
They’ve signed lots of free agents over the years and in not signing Ohtani or Soto they’re not unlike anyone else.
The coastal teams have spent a lot and taxed themselves heavily.
Toronto has all their drafts and international money.
Things can happen.
They’ve also been scouting Sasaki for two years.
SMHSFHIGMW!
Is that an understood acronym?
As A Jay’s fan we have zero chance to sign him.
I can see Toronto being very appealing to him. It is a very international city and might be less of adjustment for him.
Toronto is a world class city, easily the best choice of the three. And I’m a Padres fan. I’d pick to live and work in Toronto every day and any day.
I give it 5% chance. 45% Padres. 50% Dodgers. I also imagine the recent situation in LA might affect his thinking for better or worse.
Apparently he’s traditionally had a poor relationship with the media. One huge advantage Toronto has is that Rogers controls pretty much all the media in Canada. They’re pretty much the only team that can promise him that there will be no negative media coverage of him.
You should read some of the horror stories regarding how the press has treated him and his family in Japan. Ever since he started talking about coming to MLB during the 2023-2024 offseason he and his family have been harassed nonstop.
Red Sox.
I wish he would go to the Cardinals
So im clear Breslow has not been told the red sox are out?
He never even met with Boston.
So the whole “want to develop as a pitcher” garbage was obviously BS. Dodgers can’t keep pitchers healthy and all young pitchers are an afterthought in comparison to their acquired starters. San Diego just acquired… and Toronto’s pitching lab is a joke. He’s obviously going to LA because Shohei and Yamamoto are there and he’s guaranteed to win.
He had arm issues last year. Quite possibly, he’s already injured.
My money’s on the Padres winning the sweepstakes. Good luck Padres fans, I hope you get him!
I hope it’s them too but it won’t be. It’s been the Dodgers this entire time. It’s laughable at this point.
Ill agree. However im holding out hope the Jays somehow luck into this. It’d be franchise altering for us.
The Padres sign Sasaki … and 10 minutes later, trade Cease.
Okay…what did they get back in trade? It may not be a bad thing if they get better.
Chem…please Google “how much can sasaki sign for?” And then update all your posts, please.
Obviously Chemfinancing, YOU don’t have a clue how international signings take place. Are YOU new to baseball and you have never seen it before. The way it works is teams have a certain amount of money to sign international free agents. Sasaki is looking at most is 8M and the team signing him has him for six years, just like any other player from South America. Sasaki wouldn’t be offered anything big until he has been in the league for six years. Do YOU understand Now?
Go Jays!
I still believe the Rockies will pull the shocker of the decade and sign him. Just imagine the marketing possibilities with Rockie Sasaki.
Shocker
We all know he is going to be a frontrunner and pick the LA Deferrals
Just like when KD went to the Warriors
@desertbull
“LA Deferrals” isn’t the shot you seem to think it is….
“One of these things is not like the other one of these things just isnt the same…”
Troll possibly bot
just flag the literal murder threat he made a few comments down on this thread and hopefully all his inane comments will be removed.
So the fact that Toronto is a finalist might mean there is issues with LA and SD he can’t get over. LA being a big pond and sharing the spotlight? History of SPs needing surgery. SD with recent ownership issues and no catcher. But Toronto is probably losing Vlad and Bo after this season. So is Bregman coming maybe. Santander? Something he heard that makes them worth a closer look. LA and SD might be scrambling right now.
Get all of North America hyped by adding the Canadian team in the mix….
Hmmm….the way things are progressing, California will be joining Canada.
Who would have thought the dodgers would be a Canadian team?
His father and grandparents were killed in a tsunami, so these LA wildfires can’t be making it look like the safest place to live. The SD front office turmoil is business as usual for Americans, but apparently would be a huge disgrace from a Japanese perspective.
@Fan Dan
That Toronto is a finalist with LA and SD means simply that these are the three finalists. Nothing more. Nothing less. If he had a problem with any of the three, they would have already been eliminated.
I truly wonder if he felt he had to list a top three because of how MLB lists a top three for gold gloves, just to be funny.
Probably just a classy move so teams that have international signings can go about their business.
One thing that might be in the Jay’s favor is that they’ve had great success over the past few seasons keeping their SPs healthy.
They also have arguably the best training facilities in MLB. Things like that could appeal to someone who has struggled with injuries.
Toronto? He’ll need somebody to translate Japanese into Canadian.
Eh?
Take off you hoser.
Wow…must be over the age of 60.
Wow, must be under the age of nine.
He can’t sign for anything more than bonus money. But I think once he’s signed they can try an extend him. Anyone know for sure?
It’s been mentioned multiple times here, especially in the chats, that signing an early extension would not be allowed by MLB as it would be a way to get around the international bonus money cap. But, it he stays healthy and performs well, he will be a Super=2 and would probably be allowed to sign an extension like any other player.
I assume an extension within his first six years would have to include a payment to the Chiba Lotte Marines the same as a posting fee.
I feel sympathy for Toronto fans.
Love that they’re trolling Toronto like this
You might also want to polish up on the signing rules.
Translation: Dodgers for $5 a year with $400,000,000 deferred to 2045.
Chem….I am willing to bet you are close to $190M too high. No bank to break…..not possible.
I’m guessing $10M….max.
Yusei Kikuchi has sold Sasaki on Pete Walker and the Blue Jays. Donald Trump has convinced him Canada is the place to be for the next few years.
Taxes are going to go down in the 51st state. It’s a good time to get in before the Blue Jays open up the purse strings.
53rd state. Greenland and Panama 1st.
Sure, no statehood for DC because its a democratic zone, but lets let an entire country with people used to healthcare get the vote. Hook, line, and sinker.
I’m thinking he has concerns about gun violence.
Why on earth would roki go to toronto? To gain 50 xtra pounds like manoah or vladdy?
It’s the city dude! Toronto is one of the most beautiful cities in North America.
Who the f cares lol
This is about cash money $$$
He’ll make millions in LA off endorsements plus win WS
Are u joking?? The city? It makes zero sense that blue jays 1 of 3 finalists. The chances of toronto are less than zero. ill marry halle berry before roki signs with bluejays
Sasaki is already making $10 million a year in endorsements. He can’t make more than that on this first contract.
As with Ohtani, nearly all of his endorsements will be in Japan. It doesn’t matter where he plays as long as he pitches well and is in MLB.
Vlad lost a ton of weight (He’s basically all muscle now), so way to show that you don’t have any idea what’s going on.
Jays fans are sensitive!
enjoy the last yr you’ll ever see vlad jr in a jays uni
Nah I just enjoy calling out people who don’t know what they are talking about and are also obnoxious about it.
Maybe he doesn’t feel like going to a State that is literally on fire. The ice wall shall keep Roki safe.
He probably likes poutine. We have lots of that and better beer in Canada 😉
Bacon, syrup and clean air too
@cheesehead
Yes, because there are never any fires in Canada….
Alberta and BC every summer!
Now that that’s over, it’s time for Jed to finalize the pitching staff.
Adding to the bullpen would help. No more dumpster diving, Jed needs to get some proven arms, he’s done enough dumpster diving this offseason…
Jed’s always been a dumpster diver going back to his Padres days. Absolutely hated him as GM..
Glad to see small markets on the final list
San Diego is a small market
This is nothing new for Toronto. Remember when they “landed” Darvish? Good times.
related question: should i go to the prom with rihanna, ana de armas or rosanne barr?
Baseball is broken.
Or maybe it’s just how humanity eventually ends up. Five rich dudes run the world and the Dodger$ get all the best players.
I will always love baseball, but this really is getting kind of silly.
They’ve been saying that for literally over 100 years.
You talk out your bunghole.
Drama much? So your team dint win this season. It’s not the end of the world….
lol people man
One of these things is not like the others…
And the “mystery team” swoops in at the last minute to claim the prize!
It was always going to be the Dodgers. Maybe he told himself he wanted to give every team some kind of a real opportunity to pitch him, so he could say he really did consider the entire league worth of options- but I think he always knew he was going to the Dodgers.
It’s like he already knew from the word go but wanted to be able to say he gave everybody a chance and in his mind he did- but his mind was made up before this process even began.
Has to be an end to dodgers buying all these players. Manfred sucks
@dano62
Don’t worry. Guy is going to have TJS soon enough. He’s already had two arm injuries in his 20s so he’s not lasting into his 30s as a SP in any capacity.
@Bivouac-Sal
I watched him every day he pitched. He’s too fragile. I’m sorry the truth hurts.
If there ever was a cap instituted it would be much, much worse.
Regardless, they still have to actually win on the field. They’ve got one in a row…. Not so much a dynasty yet.
This totally changes the narrative! It’s no longer “Blue Jays are interested in said player.” It’s “said player is interested in the Blue Jays.”
The result will be the same, though.
It’ll be Dodgers. It’s the sick state of baseball these days.
And he goes to the Doosan Bears as the shocking mystery team!
I hope he chooses LA and he and the other Japanese superstars can help rebuild the city. So they really do NEED Sasaki (at least that’s the narrative they should be pushing).
Just like I said with Ohtani weeks before it was announced, just like I said with Soto, I am saying the same thing with Sasaki. He will NOT wear a Jays uniform.
He is using the Jays just like Ohtani did, just like Soto did to up the best offer he can get and then he is going to choose the city he wanted to go to the entire time.
And it is NOT Toronto.
I understand the bitterness, but this is NOT a bidding war. The money is virtually the same from each team, give or take a bit. He’s choosing based on factors other than salary.
@jimmer
But there’s no offer to up, dude.
No team can pay him more than a relative hourly wage….
The doom-posting comments here have been so enjoyable that I’m not even going to be upset if he doesn’t choose the Dodgers.
AM I NOT ENTERTAINED? HELL YEAH I AM!
Teasing the Padres like this is mean. It’s always been the Dodgers. It’s been since the day he wanted to come over.
Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays! Blue jays!
shocking
Let’s go padres
Jays only interested if multiple teams fail him on a physical.
Dodgers are really living by the “You can never have enough pitching” mantra, aren’t they?
I think most fans of MLB would love to see him select another team beyond the Blue Boys, but we all know that probably won’t happen. It’s not his fault and the Blue Boys are west coast and probably set to win again.
Mariners are the mystery team. They will sign Sasaki for league minimum and trade from their rotation depth for a premium bat.
I actually think we’ve established that the Jays were, in fact, the mystery team…..
The endorsement $$ he would earn as a Dodger is exponentially greater than the Pads or Jays. If money is a factor Dodgers are a no-brainer.
I’m not so sure about that, dodgers are the bigger brand in the biggest market but being the 3rd best pitcher and 5th+ best player on the dodgers probably isn’t at lucrative in comparison
You are right, but he could have gone to Colorado and been the big dog there, he didn’t do that either did he?
Heck, I think if he really wants to leave his mark and wants the challenge so badly, he should go join the Angels. If he can succeed where Ohtani failed, then he will be the GOAT.
He is not going to Toronto. SF Giants and Toronto are used as suckers to run up the price.
He’s not a free agent, there is no running up the price in this scenario.
lol running up his amateur signing bonus?
If Sasaki was looking for money he would’ve stayed in Japan for 2 years.
@supramzooz…
Show your data.
You haven’t a clue.
He is either going to the Dodgers or the Padres…if he goes to Los Angeles he will be one of many in the rotation and they are the defending World Series Champions. He is a great talent but he is also a very quiet kind of guy and I think the Los Angeles press would be fairly brutal if he has any kind of stumble but just being a “guy” might soften the scrutiny. Signing with the Padres has its advantage for more than one reason…he is a big fan of Yu Darvish and what better mentor for him starting his MLB career, the Padres are one of the few teams that can actually match up with the Dodgers and they have a very good roster even with the few holes they still need to address, Ruben Niebla is a pitching whisperer and would be an excellent pitching coach for him, he would not be just a “guy” and would be a top of the rotation pitcher to go with Darvish, King, Vasquez, Brito, Waldron, Hoeing and Cease…provided the Padres don’t trade him. That rotation would be as good as any team in MLB and when Musgrove gets back they would be legitimate contenders for a World Series Championship, the San Diego press is nowhere as brutal as the press in Los Angeles, the fans would love him and all he would have to do is look at how the fans loved Ha Soeng Kim, AJ Preller can actually speak Japanese and let’s face it they don’t call San Diego “Americas Finest City “ for nothing and Petco is constantly mentioned as the Best Ballpark in America.
It would be refreshing to see him NOT sign with the Dodgers and make San Diego his first home in the USA.
I just don’t see the Blue Jays as being a viable destination for him…Beautiful City but the weather can be brutal and it’s hard to beat the weather and beaches in San Diego. The question is does he want to be the piece that finally brings a World Series Championship to San Diego and go down in Padres history as one of the best pitchers to ever wear a Padres uniform joining the likes of Randy Jones, Trevor Hoffman, Jake Peavey, Kevin Brown, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage and be part of something very special or just another name in the storied history of the Dodgers and no matter what he did he would never be in the top 15 in Dodgers history….I guess we will find out in a few days.
Go Padres !!!
3 finger split- Petco is NEVER mentioned as the best ball park in America.
Look it up after you get out of living in your closet
I’ve been twice. It’s ok
Then you haven’t been. Petco is consistently named as one of the top parks in baseball by all sources.
Outside of historic parks like Wrigley and Fenway it is rated one of the top 3 along with PNC and Oracle.
Here is 2024 rankings from the site that is considered the best source on ballparks.
ballparkratings.com/ranking-and-rating-all-30-mlb-…
Thanks for indicating your biases. I’m sure Roki will use his own judgement.
@3 finger spit
You must be making reference to the ice floes.
Or could it be the moose or the beavers?
Mega “men” don’t like beavers eh?
You need to take a lesson from jd and get off the couch.
Get used to freezing in the dark.
He must really like high taxes !
Gotta say the only real similarity between the three cities is the tax rate. Is that the sign of a good agent?
Please Roki… for the love of GOD save baseball and stay away from that blue team up north who’s city is on fire
For Seattle to not be in the running just means all of the BS spouted on what he was looking for was just that… BS. Seattle has shown they’re significantly better with in house pitchers than LA, SD, and Toronto. They’re a mid market team. They play in an elite pitcher friend park. It has nothing to do with any of that crap.
He’s not a prospect.
Padres, jays and dodgers have been able to bring in top end pitchers and support their performance
The report was he wanted to go somewhere that he could grow and develop before getting his big contract. Seattle is by far the best place for pitchers to grow on a personal basis. They won’t win much, but he’d still develop as an elite, healthy pitcher.
It be funny People are getting hyped of him coming to The US instead he chooses Toronto
Ok Jed. Get back to work
The Blue Jays are used a s suckers to get the price up. He is going to the Dodgers. Come on now.
This is incorrect, please read the article. He’s called at what he can earn. There is no driving up the price
I always take Japanese pitching stats with a grain of salt.
He has never pitched over 130 innings. Last season only 111 innings.
Most MLB pitchers pitch that many innings in the first half of the season.
Unless whoever acquires him, pampers him, the workload, will take its toll.
MLB starters are pitching a lot less innings nowadays. There were 4 guys who threw over 200 innings last year. Average is probably more like 150ish for a SP now. He’s been under that, but not by that much.
71 pitchers threw between 208 and 150 innings last year
Roki only pitched 111 innings last season. His career-high 129 innings.
It is no small jump to go up to 150+ innings, which still limits his starts or innings nevermind if they plan to put him on a regular rotation regiment which I don’t see, so what is all the hub-bub about a limited pitcher who never faced MLB hitters. I am not saying he wont be decent but this is being played like they cloned Cy Young.
It’s being played like this because his first contract is going to be dirt cheap. It’s a great value signing for an mlb ready talent, that never happens
How is that any different than Michael King or Lugo? The padres have had guys like Roki innings wise the last two years and they have increased their inning by a lot and had great success.
Roki has more starting experience than either of them.
This is valid reasoning, but there is a difference between Japanese league and MLB like weekly scheduled days off for the entire league, fewer games, among other things.
I don’t discount any success, I think the different workload is something he will have to contend with perhaps not initially but later in the season. Not every pitcher can make the transition like KIng did,
There are a half dozen top starters that have made bigger jumps than that just in the past 2 years. The general rule is you don’t want them doubling their IP from the previous season.
it would be better for baseball if any team except the Dodgers would sign him.. my opinion. so my first hope is San Diego who have need and do not have much salary space.
This is all just kubuki, the fix has been in from the beginning. It’ll be the Dodgers. It’s always been the Dodgers.
dodgers are getting either sasaki or flaherty. it’s a win/win. you could say flaherty is better for the short-term.
@HomerSimpson
Bet that Flaherty’s 1st HALF won’t even be better than Roki’s.
He’ll be a Blue Jay
Going to the Angels to team up with Kikuchi and be the #1 SP.
My ability to predict anything is mediocre at best, however it seems to me the Dodgers are set on implementing a legitimate 6 man rotation. My guess is this will be a big factor in the decision.
Will they be able to keep six healthy?
Will they be able to keep one healthy? I think the last Dodgers starter to make 33 starts was Buehler in 2021. We saw how that worked out for him.
Implement this, Ducking Fodgers!
my own breaking news, he’s not going to the Blue Jays. I have a sneaking suspicion he’s going to the Dodgers, I wonder why lol
Why even go through this charade? Of course he’s going to the f***ing Dodgers
He (and his agent) knew he’d sign with LA since Day 1
“if money was his top priority, he probably would have waited until he turned 25”
This is so untrue.
Sasaki, like any other players trying MLB needed a grant from his team to be posted and even the article explains it but the team won’t make much money if the player is under 25. Sasaki clearly wanted to try MLB as early as possible so it’s highly likely that he threatened his former “uncooperative” team that he could retire to force them to grant his release . This is why Japanese media is not so soft on him right now because he basically bit the hand that fed him and ran off.
Repeat after me John, I pledge allegiance to the flag to the…Ahahahahaha!
In curling maybe… and whining… yuuup that’s about it!
Ridiculous if LAD are allowed to sign this kid. With any forethought and comprehension, ATL is the best landing spot.
They already know and have known for awhile. His agent just needed teams to wine and dine him so that they have a defense against collusion.
Please be the Padres or Blue Jays. Dodgers don’t need him. They really don’t need a 7 man rotation
TBF, they’ll have like 6 pitchers get injured.
Mentioning the Jays just to go to a southern California team and demolish Jays fans hopes is an absolutely brutal mindgame.
Roki with Art the Clown levels of psychopathy
I suppose Seattle is out?
looks like Seattle was never in
That’s what she said (Michael Scott gif)
Sorry I’m floating on cloud 9
Must be why they have no immigration problem there … wait …
January 23 is not less than a week from January 13…
Dodgers, Padres and Blue Jays…. makes total sense.
Are there really baseball fans who think he WON’T sign with the Dodgers?
Ahhhh yeah, right here dude!
Congrats then. Cuz he ain’t going to Toronto haha
What a charade. Just to pretend there was no tampering..
He’s going to Padres. Just talked to some dude that played Pro Ball. Word is He’s going to SD. Oh well. I guess we are going to get Jack Back.
“some guy that played pro ball” doesn’t get any more insider than that.
If he signs with LA, is there even a point to playing National League games this year? Just figure out who gets the AL pennant and be done with it.
Anything can happen in a 7 game series (let alone a 5 or 3 game series). Dodgers are pretty much assured to go to the playoffs, but it’s a competition to see who will play them, and then it’s anyone’s guess how the playoffs go.
Hopefully Roki don’t lose that number and calls SD soon to tell them they won the sweepstakes.
A possible draw of the Jays, They have one of the best defensive outfielders in Varsho and one of the best defensive infielders in Giménez. Big city feel with less crime, cleaner environment and more laid back. You never know?
Astronomical taxes and a crappy dome. Sign me up
Here’s your sign.
Nice Bill Engvall reference
In breaking news, the Padres and Jays have also been informed that Roki will not be signing with them…
Like we all don’t know where he’s gonna sign lol….
The dodgers should just buy Japan outright it probably would be cheaper lol
Next week we’ll hear that he failed physicals by three teams.
It’d give me heartburn how irked I’d be if he just ended up signing with the Dodgers. I despise how big market teams can just throw money at FAs without a second thought, it feels anticompetitive.
This is the one guy they can’t just throw money at
Padres are -less- likely to trade Cease if they get Sasaki, not more. In that event, they can go with Ornelas in LF, trade Suarez to save some space and redirect those funds to sign a stopgap catcher like Diaz or Gomes to pair with Campusano (whom they’ve tendered). Sign JDM, J-Turner, Joe or whomever else in the DH/corner slot will sign for ~4M, and bake. That wouldn’t be a murder’s row lineup and the bullpen would be thin, but Merril-Arraez-Tatis-Machado-Bogaerts-Cronenworth, paired with a rotation headed by Sasaki-Cease-King-Darvish, would certainly position them for a 85-90-win pace by the trade deadline. Moreover, has there even been one single fresh Cease rumor since the winter meetings? That rumor trail is as cold as Arenado’s, but people like to speculate on the Padres’ money issues, so it keeps getting re-heated.
Gosh you make a lot of sense. Though I think the pen even without Suarez could be pretty good once guys like Reynolds and.Cruz settle in.
Bingo bango bongo
Can’t image why he wouldn’t choose the Dodgers.
Afraid of fire?
Stay classy, San Diego. Like SD isn’t immune from wildfires.
Mud slides, earthquakes, high taxes?
Doesn’t seem to stop masses of people from moving there.
Rotation of 14 and will be on a very competitive team with possibly limited playing time. Not to mention a high publicity team. No pressure Roki.
If he wants to be the top dog and get attention
Injuries to their staff? When no starter has pitched a full season since 2021, that has to factor into his decision.
Maybe it’s “Deus ex machina” ?
LAD were a lock but the fires scare him off.
Even without Roki, that Dodger team will be considered a failure at anything under 120 wins!
It’ll be hilarious when the Jays lose again
I don’t give a crap about all those teams to be honest, but I hope Toronto gets him. For no other reason than wanting Toronto to get a big addition after a few years of swings and misses. It’s a good fan base and the window is nearly shut without a good infusion of talent.
That being said, he is not picking high taxes to play for a team that will lose its superstar and can’t recruit well because of those taxes.
I think we all agree we can count out the Blue Jays. Much to the chagrin of the wonderful folks in Toronto.
Well he would definitely get a full time rotation spot and won’t have to worry about losing it all year so he can continue to develop. Large market without the publicity, that is saved for the Leafs. Rich owners. So I wouldn’t say we all agree.
No, we don’t agree.
Roki Doke
Read the article. He can only be paid so much as an amateur international free agent.
Don’t think taxes are a major issue. He’s “only” going to be making $5m or so in salary, the big money is in endorsements. The LA ad market is pretty saturated with Ohtani and Yamamoto, SD and TOR are “virgin ” markets for a Nippon star.
He won’t have his face on park benches or at the local Jeep dealership in the city he plays. His endorsements will come in Japan wearing the uniform of the team he picks. He’s international. The market he chooses to play in will account for a tiny part of his endorsement package.
His market changes how high profile he will be.
Yu Darvish says hi.
He will be making major league minimum in salary. He will get $5-6 million in a signing bonus.
Hoping it’s the Dodgers – one more arm at the top end of the rotation will help!
Someone in MLB media hates Blue Jays fans
I wonder if he’s going to the Dodgers.
Its a long shot, but they have a one in three shot for the moment.
BREAKING: Wait He Can Change His Mind
Previous Teams STILL Under Consideration
Non-stop flights between Denver and Tokyo are only 45 minutes longer than nonstop from LAX.
He would join an up-and-coming Rockies rotation composed of a few of these: Dollander, Sullivan, Hughes, Brecht… and Feltner.
Small market that will be cash rich as other contracts fall off just in time (Bryant), and the Rockies will pay.
Rockies have had ROY pitcher, 19 game winners, and some good-not-great pitching.
Sleeper team.
What are you smoking??
Yes I would really die on the ” we made Jason Jennings a ROY winner in 2002″ we really haven’t had a starter have multiple good seasons but HEY…. we nursed Jennings to a career ERA of 5 and 11.2 WAR and a big one 62 wins ( 16 in his ROY campaign )
IF this doesn’t signal for Roki to come to Colorado, nobody will
The Rock pile would be lucky to be .500 once before the decade is over.
“up-and-coming Rockies rotation”… that one made me laugh!
It’s really pathetic that the Orioles weren’t / aren’t involved. Especially after signing Sugano. With all the one year deals they’ve given out they’ll be in the same situation this time next year. Pathetic. it’s the same ole same ole with them.
They have the same odds as the Jays (0%) They just dont waste their time.
Canada would be my preference too
Snap out of it, Brewski! *slap*
Good luck Dodgers, Padres, and Blue Jays fans!
Toronto doesn’t have low-crime.
According to crime statistics, Toronto is one of the safetest major cities in North America. One would be safer in Toronto than virtually anywhere in the U.S. including bigger towns.
YBC – Yup Toronto relies heavily on tourism which means there’s a massive police presence to keep visitors safe.
Ironically I was in the Eaton Centre Mall when there was a shooting in the food court, but that’s a rarity for such a large population.
It is literally the safest city in North America
worldatlas.com/cities/safest-cities-in-north-ameri…
I know. I once dated a Canadian living in the U.S. and her family lived in Toronto. We used to go out at all hours of the night there. Drive carefully was the only warning her parents would give.
Another Blue Jays joke here.
He has had a handshake under the table agreement with the dodgers for over 2 years. This is all a facade to cover up that fact.
There is nothing to cover up, committing via handshake prior to this process is very much okay.
Stop it…”the Dodgers, Padres and Jays are finalists”. The Dodgers, Dodgers and the Dodgers are the finalists…since the day he announced he was coming to the US, he’s been a Dodger. Same way Juan Soto was a Met, even as he was playing in a Yankees uniform.
I read he is on a flight to Toronto.
Ha! Very well played.
Who knew Ohtani was planning to sing w/the Mets.
It’s going to the Padres or Blue Jays. He wants to prove how great he is and he can only do that with a team like the Padres or Blue Jays.
Japanese stars never sign with the Dodgers. So, you can cross them off.
/s
I told you, they should have hired the Superfife.
Yes or no?
And……where did I tell them to send me?
I would love to what the FO sent…if anything…..
Lol…..
Video of Sasaki throwing at Petco today?
packaged-media.redd.it/6pvf8863ruce1/pb/m2-res_640…
@pads fans.
Get ready for the trolls.
Saying it’s a cover up so the dodgers can offer 400 million or whatever the 5 stupid comments they constantly spam.
I would say this is a very good sign. Is he wearing a uniform?
Padres workout gear, but not a uniform. You can see AJ Preller and others watching. It is shot from behind the player, so you never see his face, but it does look like his mechanics. I am betting that he also threw for the Dodgers and Blue Jays on his visits there.
I still believe it will be a mystery team.
@pads. just thought that was a good sign. I would just warmup in regular clothes. That’s definitely his throwing mechanics. But yeah I’m sure this is the visit he is checking out the stadiums, cities, and meeting with players.
I believe we heard earlier that he specifically requested to not meet with any players. This set off yet another round of baseless speculation about what it “means.”
That was during his two hour team visits the first round. Second round he has gone to the city and players are there.
The players are not hanging around the stadium during the middle of winter, they are scattered around the country and the world enjoying the offseason at home. Further, we’ve heard no reports about Sasaki changing his feelings about meeting with players. I don’t understand why anyone gets satisfaction out of making stuff up and calling it a fact.
Incidentally if anyone is interested in knowing why we won’t see Sasaki or anybody else working out at Dodger Stadium, it’s because the stadium is currently undergoing a major renovation.
Actually, all those players that were at the Petco either live in the San Diego/So Cal area, Machado/Merrill/Musgrove/Darvish, or have been at Petco working out like Salas/Sullivan.
AJ Preller, Erik Greupner, and Ruben Niebla were there.
There were others there most wont recognize like Shingo Horrie, Nathan Landau, and Rob Marcello.
The most interesting thing to me is that the guy “catching” Sasaki is Ethan Salas, the Padres uber catching prospect.
Even without the option to get PAID upfront, I still think he goes with the Dodgers- especially since the Padres are in a lower-budget rebuild where they’re trying to cut payroll wherever they can…. whereas the Dodgers are gonna pay you whatever it takes- even if it comes in the form of signing bonus / low base salary/ massive deferral once it comes time for arbitration/extension.
This whole the padres are trying to cut payroll thing is way way overblown.
1) the padres are over the lux tax.
2) Two the padres have the 4th highest increase in tax payroll number of any team in the league from last year to this year. They are 1 of only 5 teams that have increased their luxury tax number so far this year from last.
3) The padres actual payroll is 40m
MORE than last years.
4) They haven’t made a single cost cutting move this offseason.
These rumors are from some report that said they would have a payroll number likely between the 210m they are at currently and the 169m they had last year. Which that is sounds reasonable. Also Preller stating himself that he has flexibility for the right player.
The Padres I’m sure would like to stay below the luxury tax mark to avoid the penalty. For a mid market club these penalties have real consequences. From QO draft comp, to additional payroll, even some revenue sharing money. Draft picks pushed down. Really only a very large market can stay competitive year in and year out year out to overcome these penalties.
Simm,
What was actually said was that the Padres 2025 payroll would be somewhere between 2023 and 2024. That was said by Eric Kutsenda, Erik Greupner, and then repeated by AJ Preller.
2024 was $227 million and 2023 was $291 million. Today they are at $246 million and we know they have outstanding offers to Profar ($8 million with $15 million mutual option) and others that would increase that number.
Preller saying he has flexibility for the right player pr players may mean trades like the ones that brought Cease, Arraez, Scott, Adam, and Hoeing to the Padres immediately before and during the 2024 season.
Pads- those are tax numbers. Not actual payroll. In 2024 it was 169, 2023 it was 255m and is 208 right now.
They are between those numbers now. No matter which way you look at them. There is a very large area between those numbers.
CBT is closer to real because they include the rest of the things that are included in payroll like benefits and pre-arb bonus contributions and Hosmer’s salary.
Either way they still have money to spend before they hit the mid-point between 2023 and 2024.
Let me repeat that, they still have money to SPEND before hitting midpoint between 2023 and 2024.
It doesn’t matter if the Padres were in full rebuild mode, he will be a FA in 6 years so he will get paid.
The Padres have a $246 million CBT payroll right now, 5th highest in baseball, so they are definitely not in rebuild mode. They have not traded a single player, so no payroll cutting happening except in the fevered brains of “writers” who desperately need something to write about.
But hey, keep on with your whole shtick about payroll cutting.
Still no news on the Tigers. What gives?
Anyone know- under the CBA, can Sasaki put into his contract that he must be on the MLB roster, and that he cannot be offered arbitration?
That’s the only way his decision makes any sense to me- he’d be a free agent in two years.
I believe not. Because of his age he is considered to be an “amateur” free agent, and thus will sign a minor league contract, with everything that implies.
No he cannot
No but it is unclear when his new team can offer a market rate extension (as they could for any promising bonus baby even before he reaches the majors). They can’t now, because MLB would disallow it as a violation of the spirit of the agreement with NPB. But a year from now? Two years? Who knows.
I think it will be the dodgers. That prospect “uncommitting” from the dodgers and signing with the pirates is probably a sign of the dodgers trying to find more money for sasaki
@domingo. Yeah that’s definitely a sign. Just like the padres putting 6 guys on the trade block two being starting pitchers. Sounds like they could trade one for international money and a player or two back. Dodgers could trade Miller or Ryan for pool money.
yankees: we have some guys in scranton
dodgers: we have the nation of japan
yankees: you win
I actually hope he goes to the Dodgers. It’s his choice to go where he wants to be employed. All of this whining about a baseball team on here is ridiculous. The Dodgers aren’t ruining the game. If they’re doing anything they’re making baseball more relevant because they have people talking.
The only reason people are hating on the Dodgers is because they won the World Series this year and have set themselves up as an organization in a very favorable position over the next half decade if not longer. They have done this by having a smart front office who wants it more than most other teams and everything they have done has been 100% legal within the rules of the collective bargaining agreement.
The Dodgers are the bad guys. Fine, everything is more interesting when you have a villain to root against. Not only that, it feels so much better when you see your team beat the team that everybody considers to be the best. If I were a fan of an NL West team I want him to go to the Dodgers because it makes it that much sweeter when you knock them off. You don’t remember the people who beat the Davids of the world but you always remember who beat the Goliaths.
The Dodgers are starting to look a lot like one of their biggest rivals of the 70’s, the Big Red Machine. That team dominated the decade but they still only won 2 World Series of the 4 they made it to. Just because the Dodgers have an all star caliber team doesn’t mean they’re winning the World Series every year so quit acting like that is what is going to happen and enjoy rooting for your team. You’ll be a lot happier if you focus your energy on what your team is doing and not the Dodgers.
The 70s had like 6 great teams. Pirates, reds, orioles, A’s, yankees, and Dodgers.
What a decade of baseball
Yes, those 6 dominated the decade. In fact, there were only 2 other franchises to make the World Series during the 70’s, the Red Sox in 1975 and the Mets in 1973. The six teams you mentioned accounted for every World Series appearance during that 10 year run except the two I mentioned. I don’t know that we will ever see another decade with three teams from each league dominating a 10 year span like that.
Cincinnati Reds 2-2 (Won 1975, 1976)
Oakland A’s 3-0 (Won 1972, 1973, 1974)
Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 (Won 1971, 1979)
New York Yankees 2-1 (Won 1977, 1978)
Baltimore Orioles 1-2 (Won 1970)
Los Angeles Dodgers 0-3 (No W.S. wins)
Quit the BS already. He’s going to sign with the dodgers. And he will defer his salary, too.
He’ll regret not signing with the NY Mets.
Well, regret is what the Mets do best…
Imagine if Ichiro had come over at this age. He probably would have been in shouting distance of the Rose hit record.
Dog and pony show, the blue jays? Really? Yeah right.
The players used to have a method for dealing with collusion.
The bean and…
Hitting the ball back up the middle…..
HARD.<
I think that would be a valid way of dealing with……
the Dodgers.
ooh… scary
I am curious if the Dodgers would trade for Devers to play third base for them. They could trade for Ronald Acuna to play center. If they are building an all star team why not get 2 more.
Because the other teams wont trade those players? They can sign whoever they want in free agency but trades are tricky as the other team has to agree.
We already have Devers at 3rd. His name in Muncy.
Once again, the trash here stinks. And Jimmy is here to clean up the mess before the pile gets fat and sticky… Sasuko will be going to the Astros, after signing in Houston, he will immediately be flipped to the Cubs for payroll relief. Throw in Lance McCrullers, two Boston creams and some Baja Blast and you have yourself one heck of a tasty deal.
As a Blue jays fan i know there is 0% chances he come here… my Jays are about to start a rebuild…. Hopefully it’s the pads.
Agreed. Its just a meme at this point when the Jays are “finalists”. As a Jays fan I dont blame him for not coming here. Atkins and Shapiro are a mess.
I wonder if he was talking to kikuchi, he’s been scouted since he was 18. Find it interesting Seattle and Toronto are in on him. I know it says 3 teams, but Seattle hasn’t been eliminated. They made the in person meeting.
Rex, Preller attended Sasaki’s high school games. MLB scouts and execs have been scouting him for a very long time.
I believe the entire baseball world outside dodger fans wants to see Roki go anywhere but LA. Between the Mets eclipsing the payroll threshold and trading Verlander and Scherzer with the money left for prospects and dodgers with there deferred payments because they can market players better than most teams baseball is really in a pickle and if Roki picks them than it’s obvious they are the direct pipeline from Japan and all East coast teams will need to restructure and put all there resources into the American and South American born players.
I think it’s pretty, pretty, pretty obvious that Roki wants to be a Dodger. You are correct in your assessment.
Im not sure you can rule the padres out…they seem pretty involved
Obvious, based on what information?
If and if Blue Jay’s get him they will have a better off-season. Dang orioles you can’t do anything right.
Be easier to limit his media access in Toronto and get lost in the crowd of a city of 150 languages.
Dodgers he’d be in the media spotlight with some other Japanese players so while going with the WS champs it would be an increase to the type of life in Japan maybe even more media frenzy which apparently he detests. Will money over rule?
Padres are more competitive than the Jays and he’d be reunited with his friend would be the sentimental favourite.
So I’d guess Padres if he wants to stay in California and Jays if he wants a complete change of scenery
We shall see!
If it’s the Jays though it would be a lucky fill for a 5th starter and a hilarious win for Atkins who regularly gets raked over the coals. That we would win in spite of him has a certain appeal. Toronto and Canada would be respectful yet celebrate his achievements might have a certain draw. Sometimes it hits a bit different when a whole country has your back
California would be a complete change he is from Japan
No California would not be a complete change. Of all the teams it would be the least
Read. The. Article.
Would a team just love being in the dodgers division for at least the next 10 years if they now get sasaki. Go padres! The blue jays are just an after thought.
