The 2024 Rule 5 draft took place this afternoon at the Winter Meetings in Dallas. The results of the draft are below.
As a refresher, the Rule 5 draft is a way for players potentially talented enough for the big leagues but blocked by their current clubs to find opportunities elsewhere. Any players that were 18 and under at the time of their original signing and have played five professional seasons, and any players who signed at 19 years of age or older at signing that now have four professional seasons, who are not on a club’s 40-man roster are eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft.
Though the amateur (Rule 4) draft now has a lottery to determine the selection order, the Rule 5 draft still goes the old-fashioned way of reverse order of standings from the season that just ended. Clubs need to have an open 40-man roster spot in order to make a pick but aren’t obligated to make a selection on their turn. If they do make a pick, they will have to pay $100K to the team they select from. The selected players must stay on the active roster (or injured list) for the entire 2025 season or else be placed on waivers. If they clear waivers, they must be offered back to their original team. They cannot be optioned to the minors.
Last year’s edition saw some key players change clubs. The A’s took Mitch Spence from the Yankees with the top pick and kept him all year. Justin Slaten was plucked from the Rangers by the Mets and then traded to the Red Sox. Players like Anthony Santander and Ryan Pressly have been notable picks in other recent years while guys like George Bell and Roberto Clemente are found deeper in the history books.
Here are this year’s picks…
- White Sox: RHP Shane Smith (Brewers) (Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline relayed the pick on Bluesky prior to the draft)
- Rockies: pass
- Marlins: C Liam Hicks (Tigers)
- Angels: LHP Garrett McDaniels (Dodgers)
- Athletics: RHP Noah Murdock (Royals)
- Nationals: RHP Evan Reifert (Rays)
- Blue Jays: RHP Angel Bastardo (Red Sox)
- Pirates: pass
- Reds: 2B Cooper Bowman (Athletics)
- Rangers: pass
- Giants: pass
- Rays: LHP Nate Lavender (Mets)
- Red Sox: pass
- Twins: RHP Eiberson Castellano (Phillies)
- Cardinals: pass
- Cubs: 3B Gage Workman (Tigers)
- Mariners: pass
- Royals: pass
- Tigers: pass
- Astros: pass
- Mets: pass
- D-backs: pass
- Braves: RHP Anderson Pilar (Marlins)
- Orioles: pass
- Guardians: pass
- Padres: RHP Juan Nunez (Orioles)
- Brewers: LHP Connor Thomas (Cardinals)
- Yankees: pass
- Phillies: RHP Mike Vasil (Mets); Phillies later traded Vasil to Rays for cash considerations, per announcements from both clubs.
- Dodgers: pass
Second round (all but one club passed)
- Braves SS Christian Cairo (Guardians)
The minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft also occurred this afternoon. Those players will not go onto the selecting teams’ 40-man roster. Right-hander Hobie Harris, who pitched for the Nationals in 2023 and signed a minor league deal with the Mets last month, was taken by the Red Sox.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Phillies? Don’t bother. That roster space is too valuable!
GareBear
Aged like milk. Will Vasil make the roster? Who knows. But I still chuckle at the armchair gm thinking he knows better and missing the mark
bambat
aged fine. Phillies ended up trading Vasil to free up that roster spot again!
James123
Vasil also feels weird to have been free like this. Any team looking for a 5th starter to compete in spring training should have kicked those tires. Successful in AAA in the past with some looks in the bigs. Does he stick the whole year- maybe, but for 50k (or whatever a rule 5 pick is now) you get to seem him in the spring and let him compete for a 5th starter job…. why are the white sox not all over this.

Spoke too soon, GareBear!

Why pay the Phillies when they could have taken him in RD 2?
Led Hoyer
White Sox are going to set rule 5 pick records today.

As they should reallly. Take some shots and see if anything sticks
pt57
It looks like they already passed in Rd 2.
Led Hoyer
Shocking.
bwmiller79
Like that they made a pick and that he looks like a good prospect. Put him in the rotation, sink or swim. Let’s go Sox!
Fun being a fan of a team on the schnide!
Unclemike1526
I was surprised that the Cubs picked anybody. But then I looked at the guy. He’s a LH bat that can play 3B, SS and OF. Looks like the Cubs have at least brought in somebody who can audition for Mastrobuoni’s spot. They really don’t have anyone like that in the high minor leagues right now. Hope to get a good look at him in ST. Got some power too.
Led Hoyer
I had the same thoughts. I can’t imagine it will take much to beat out Mastrobuoni.
Pads Fans
Maybe Mastrobuoni is on the move along with Suzuki.
Led Hoyer
I can’t imagine he has any trade value. I thought he was going with wisdom and madrigal.
Unclemike1526
You mean ” Hoped” right? We all did.
fearthecub
Yep. You never know when you’re going to find a diamond in the rough, and surely there have been plenty instances of rule 5 players finding great success.
Melchez17
Workman is a solid defender and has great speed. A little power. His big drawback has been strike outs. But he’s lowered the percentage the last 2 years..
Unclemike1526
It kind of looks like the Cubs want to keep him around. So I’m betting that if he doesn’t make the team out of ST, They’ll just work out a deal rather than offer him back to the Tigers. You don’t have to necessarily keep a guy all year to keep him in the organization. He was at AA last year so he was probably due to start at AAA this year anyway. He had 18 HR’s, 89 RBI’s and 30 SB’s. That’s a nice combo. And like I said, The Cubs don’t really have anyone in the high minors that can play those combinations.
stymeedone
Even though he lowered his strikeouts, Workman’s K rate is still atrocious.
Pads Fans
Roberto Clemente was a Rule 5 draft pick.
Big Hurt
Good first pick by the Sox, Smith had strong results in the high minors as what looks to be a swing man, so someone who could actually stick on the roster.
Simbosargos
Yep. Not happy at all that Smith was left exposed. If he can overcome his injury history, he could be the Sox; closer. As early as this coming season.
cwsOverhaul
Compliment to Milw being excellent at developing pitchers…..pre-taught well. Makes sense Brewers feel they have plenty of arms rather than lose a position player.
Simbosargos
The logic is sound in your post. However, there were plenty of AAAA type players they could’ve exposed and didn’t.
Ducey
The Jays should pick a potential relief arm. Instead they will grab another light hitting middle infielder. Atkins just cant help himself.
TheBoatmen
I’m thinking he will just pass.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
That’s active!
The ChiSox get free reign to pick through it all?
How prepared were they for this?

My favorite rendition of “Blue Skies” is Dinah Washington’s.

Nah. Allman Brothers.
El Kabong
I said, “My favorite rendition.” There isn’t any “nah” in that.
El Kabong
Now that I think of it, “Blue Sky” by the Allman Brothers is an entirely different song. It’s not a rendition of the Irving Berlin classic.
nowheredan
It’s possible that you took my post too seriously.
El Kabong
Nah. I was trying to divert the chat from the partisan politics nonsense. It’s also baseball-related, as Dinah Washington once went on a date with Dodgers catcher John Roseboro (which didn’t go well, according to Roseboro in his autobiography).

Blue sky at night, sailor’s delight ….

Such a good song. I enjoy Sinatra’s cover as well as Willie Nelson’s.
El Kabong
Yeah, those two versions are superb. It’s incredible how Willie is still making quality music at 91. His song “Energy Follows Thought” from 2022 is among the best he’s ever written. Check it out if you haven’t heard it.

Oh, I get it. You’re a Bowie and Cleveland Naps fan. By the way, Napolean LaJoie was my French Canadian mémère’s cousin (mémère is French for grandmother).

I’m going to guess the Jays take a pitcher to fill one of the open bullpen spots, at least temporarily.

Looks like Bastardo had TJ in June, so would be on the DL all season, so would be easy to hang onto. Looks to be a changeup guy with crummy control.
El Kabong
In case anyone doesn’t know, MLB dot com will have live coverage of the draft at 2 p.m. EST. It’s great fun for baseball nerds (we all know who we are).

I wonder if anyone will take Navigato or Workman from the Tigers?
Nuitari
I honestly hope not.
warnbeeb
Workman went to the Cubs. I will be surprised if he can stick on any ML roster, let alone the Cubby’s. Catcher, Hicks, went to the Marlins very early. Tigers just had him for 10 minutes after acquiring him from Rangers in the Carson Kelly trade….who is a FA.
I don’t think the Tigers will feel the losses.
FOmeOLS
Here’s hoping for Bryan Magdaleno to Baltimore
El Kabong
Orioles pass. Take a drink every time you hear the word “pass.”
Old York
Without structural changes to incentivize active use and development of selected players, the draft risks becoming a perfunctory exercise rather than a meaningful avenue for talent redistribution in MLB.
ThonolansGhost
I knew Workman would get picked.
Nuitari
That kinda sucks.
Tomas80
It really sucks.
dkhits20
Only if you truly believe the Cubs will keep him on their roster for the entire season. He hasn’t yet proven that he can hit AAA pitching, let alone MLB pitching. Also, we’re talking about the Cubs’ roster, not the White Sox.
Nuitari
I hope they do get him back but probably shouldn’t have lost him in the first place.
Certainly has more upside than a couple of the other utility infielders on the 40 man.
bkbk
Angel Bastardo is an all time name
AC Surf Baseball
How can the Rockies pass? They’re 26 man will look similar to the 2024 White Sox, destined to lose at least 100 games. There’s not one player they’ve scouted in the last couple years and like enough to carry on their big league roster?
El Kabong
Scouting? The Rockies?
gorav114
Great pickup of Juan Nunez by Padres. He’s 24 in high A but has a lot of potential to move quick. He might get squeezed out and sent back but could be a great move if they can hold onto him
Atloriolesfan
Os fan and thought they might lose Nunez. But either he comes back or he a Padre all year. Either way, he was the fourth piece of a trade package for…Jorge Lopez. Hope the Padres give him a MLB taste and return him.
Jbigz12
I can’t believe we kept Strowd and Hunt & Pinto over protecting Nunez.
holecamels35
Stats on that Lavender guy look filthy. Watch him become the Rays next stud reliever.
ExileInLA 2
Yeah – I’m surprised the Mets left him off the 40, even though he is out all year from TJ.
geofft
He may not be out all year. He had the surgery last May. And, as a reliever, he may be able to come back a couple of months earlier than a starter would.
That said, he needs to be on the MLB roster (as opposed to the IL) for at least 60 days, or else Rule 5 provisions carry over into the 2026 season.
Flyby
they have a lot of young guys so had to cut somewhere. Im surprised Vasil and Lavender were left off as well, but only so many spots.
geofft
@ Flyby Disagree with that assessment.. A bit surprised about Lavender, not Vasil. neither one of them has shown to be MLB-ready. Vasil has been poor at triple-A so far, and actually regressed this past season from what he had done in ’23. Even at his peak, scout evals had his ceiling as BOTR. Ceiling, not projection. Clearly, Tb thinks that there is one tweak they can make that will transform him into something more.
As for the numbers, the Mets have only 35 on the 40-man roster right now, and that includes the addition of a few free agents. They certainly had the room if they wanted to use it.
And what “lot of young guys” are you talking about? All of their good young players are either on the roster already, or are not eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
No, this was a straight up gamble/educated guess that the players either would not be taken, or would be taken and returned. Lavender had his surgery last May. Before that he’d pitched only 5 games in AAA, and 7 in AA. As great as the results were, he was/is bound to need to go back to the minors for more seasoning at some point.
rct
I really like that pick by the Rays. I get why the Mets didn’t roster him but I have a feeling he’ll be a good pickup for the Rays for 2026 and beyond.
hiflew
I am just befuddled that the Rockies didn’t think there was anyone available that would improve their 40 man roster. Even if they don’t stick, just trying someone out in Spring Training seems like a worthwhile gamble. Sigh.
Armaments216
I was going to make a similar comment and a couple of you have already beaten me to it. If there’s any team that can carry a couple of Rule 5 players for a full season, you’d think it would be the 2025 Rockies. And yet they pass out of the gate – with the second pick in the draft no less.
AC Surf Baseball
Had a feeling either Griff McGarry or Eiby Castellano would get plucked from the Phillies. Amazes me they haven’t cashed in some of these prospects getting to their mid 20’s that still have some value. In a pitching starved league – you’re telling me a team like Astros or Angels with terrible farm systems – wouldn’t send say Chas McCormick & overpaid Ryan Pressly or Jo Adell & Reid Detmers to the Phillies for a package of 5 top 30 or so close to MLB prospects? Phillies roster is stacked, there’s no room for Otto Kemp, Carlos de la Cruz & Mick Abel. Trade these 24, 25 year old prospects while they still have value. Not keep them until they fall off prospects lists and release them like they did Simon Mizzuiotti. Hope they are having some productive conversations at the winter meetings bc they need to make some moves to that roster.

Why would Rockies pass with #2 pick?
redmatt
Because they are the Rockies? I think the Reds got a sneaky good pick with Cooper Bowman.
King123
What have you read about Bowman? The numbers don’t really jump off the page in my opinion.
redmatt
Solid in AAA, can play 2b and the OF. Hit over .300 against lefties and slugged .500 against them. Good speed. Nice bench piece.
redmatt
sorry. meant AA.
Armaments216
What are the Reds going to do with a Rule 5 2B? Barring multiple injuries there’s no path to keeping Bowman in their big league roster.
King123
That’s my belief too. They’re probably just gonna audition him in Spring Training and go from there. Kinda like Kyle Holder whom they selected in ’20 or’21.
earmbrister
Bowman will continue his transition to CF. Blazing speed and good glove/arm. Will be the 5th or 6th OFr.
Good pickup
Armaments216
Got it – CF makes a lot more sense than 2B
This one belongs to the Reds
That will be the big acquisition this week.
Michael Chaney
Terry Francona LOVES guys who play a ton of positions, especially if any of them are up the middle positions. That alone will get him major league at bats.
He also doesn’t seem overly patient with raw young players, so a versatile guy who’s probably floor over ceiling is his kind of guy. He’ll make the team out of spring training.
Source: I’m a Guardians fan

Jays drafted Angel Bastardo? Uh….. Interesting.

Huh. I thought I read the Angels weren’t going to grab anyone. And yet another arm? That spot could be given to a proven player.. now that they’re at 40.. wonder if that rumored Ward trade will bring in someone..

Tigers made $200K today…now Mrs Illitch can afford to get her new car as you know she won’t allow Chris to spend another dime on payroll this offseason!
mets1977
Between all of the players taken from the Mets in both the Major League and Minor League portions, you would think all of the other teams are pitching in to cover Soto’s salary next year.
El Kabong
The combined salaries of those players would barely pay for a season’s worth of snacks eaten by Gary, Keith, and Ron in the broadcast booth (though Keith seems to have cut back on the cotton candy).

It should cover at least one at bat with no one on in the 9th down by 2.

Saw the kid the Padres picked pitching against Brooklyn in the Sally league. He came into the game after the starter pitched 4 SO innings and struck out 8 or 9 over the next 5 innings. Gave up a run on a balk.
He is not a big guy, so was really surprised that he throws upper 90s. Could be this years Kolek. Pitch out of the pen for a few months then get “injured” so Padres can hold onto him for a few more years. More likely he is back in Orioles system before opening day.
gorav114
I hope Os get him back. He’s got a live arm. He’s 24 so he might be ready to contribute in the pen
Gwynning
Hoping he sticks, just like Kolek did! Spot starts possible, but mostly probably that 13th arm in the back of the ‘pen.
Pads Fans
Gwynning, I think you are going to impressed when you see him in spring training. For a small guy, 5’11” and 180-190 lbs, he had some zip on his FB. Even though he is coming from A+ ball where he was a starter, he may just stick as a reliever like Kolek did.
If he can’t cut it in spring training the Padres send him back and all they are out is $50k.
Gwynning
Correctamundo Señor! I’m stoked we grabbed him, just hope he sticks. Love the upside and it’s a decent roll of the dice.
Tomas80
Not sure how the Tigers managed to let Gage Workman go.
warnbeeb
I’ve followed Workman for a couple years and have seen him 3-4 times in person. He played SS in all the games I saw. Small sample, I know, but he didn’t fail to bobble, double clutch or let one scoot under the glove up the middle in any game. I don’t see a ML infielder here., but what do I know? Maybe he can play in the OF.
I didn’t see anything special at the plate, while he can make hard contact. The Lee kid at 2B who the Tigers got from the Phillies for Lorenzen (not exposed to Rule 5) by comparison looks distinctly better than GW.
Wagner>Cobb
Would’ve like STL to pick up Workman. They need right-handed power, especially if they flip Arenado. Could’ve stuck him in RF because there’s no way I’d start Walker at the big league level next year…he looks totally lost.
Wagner>Cobb
*Workman hits lefthanded. My mistake. I still would’ve added him. Why not?

So long Gage. We hardly knew ye — beyond your strikeouts and status as “Guy < Tork."

Aside from being poorly run and perhaps not trying, can anyone explain why Colorado doesn’t ALWAYS select a pitcher in the Rule V Draft?
Ten teams drafting after them felt there were pitchers worthy taking a look at, and given their perennial non-contention status, the Rockies are ideally suited to carry a player on their roster the entire year unlike a contender.
hiflew
They didn’t select anyone because the 40 man is full (if you count Thairo Estrada) and they would have had to DFA someone before making a pick. Whether you agree with the way they are run or not, the Rockies do things their way. They prefer their guys over others. Honestly it makes sense to not DFA someone in order to take a guy, that another decided was unworthy of a 40 man roster spot, that may or may not be ready that you have to keep in the majors regardless. I’d rather add one of my own minor league guys that I could at least have the option of sending to the minors if necessary.
Devlsh
Hiflew- “the Rockies do things their way”
How’s that worked out for them so far?
Managing the 40 man is a skill, and retaining guys like Farmer, Hilliard, Gilbreath, etc who are fungible with little upside instead of taking a chance on a young player who might is just one of the reasons Colorado fails.
I understand their (misguided) loyalty to their own guys but 30 year old fringe players should not be the reason a team that struggles to acquire pitching passes on a cheap avenue that MIGHT provide some.
Signing Farmer was a big mistake; utility infielders coming off a .626 OPS season shouldn’t earn a major league roster spot and $3.4 mill; those guys get spring training invites.. He may have cost them a pitcher prospect.
hiflew
No matter what you think, it’s still their team. Unless you want to pony up about a half a billion dollars or more, they get to keep making the decisions they want.
I am not a fan of getting rid of Brendan Rodgers only to sign Estrada and Farmer. I would have preferred to keep Rodgers and maybe select someone like Cooper Bowman as a utility guy for about the same money. But once again, not my decision to make.
My (and your) only decision in the matter is do I want to root for this team despite my not agreeing with their choice? I choose yes, you probably don’t. Good luck to you either way.
Devlsh
hlfew- I applaud your loyalty to “your” team, but being loyal to a club doesn’t preclude being critical when they make poor choices. In fact, wanting the team to succeed, you ought be critical when they follow a path that bypasses a possible route to improvement.
I can only imagine the frustration of being a Rockies fan: the club has a lot stacked against it because of its altitude. That said, many of their failures are self-inflicted, and I was merely pointing out how crazy it is that a team facing perennial pitching challenges chooses to ignore a viable and inexpensive method of adding some.
hiflew
I have been critical of “my” team on many occasions. But it is rather arrogant to think that the way I would have done it would have worked so much better. Everyone always piles on the Rockies for poor decisions, but then they always go back to how FAs don’t want to go to Colorado or some stuff like that. It’s easy to say that your decision could have worked better when you don’t actually have to make it happen. It’s all just speculation because there is only EVER one way that it can happen. We will never know the real results of any other decision.
Yes, in theory, the Rockies could have been better without signing Kris Bryant, but what would they have done without doing it? The most likely thing that would have happened would have been re-signing Trevor Story. If they re-signed Story, Ezequiel Tovar probably would not be looking like a budding superstar for the Rox. The Rockies would not have gotten the comp pick for Story which became Sterlin Thompson, a highly ranked prospect for the team. And if we look at what has happened with Story since he left, that result wouldn’t be any better than Bryant. So once again, one never knows.
Gwynning
That’s POBO 101 though, hiflew. Gotta come into the R5 with empty spots otherwise you’re just sitting on your hands and sipping coffee for 2 hours. Call it what you will, but I just see another fail by the Rox FO. Sorry bud, hope you have a good season when it all boils down though. Cheers
hiflew
If you are going to fail at something, the Rule 5 draft is the best option. I have always felt that it was the most overrated thing in MLB. Sure, you might get someone good about 2% of the time, but more often than not it is just a waste of time and worse a waste of a roster spot for the entire year.
Devlsh
hiflew – At what cost? $100K? Or $50K if you return him?
The Rockies are due to pay Kyle Farmer $3.4 mil this year; isn’t he (and his roster spot) worth 34 long shots, with the potential of adding a Justin Slaten or Ryan Fernandez or Kevin Kelly or Garrett Whitlock as the prize if you choose wisely? Given the Rockies perennial high selection and difficulty acquiring pitching, they should always take a shot at a Rule V pick AND, quite frankly, they ought make it widely known that they’ll pay $25K to any team who eventually is forced to return their own Rule V pick because of a roster crunch. The Rockies can afford the roster spot the entire year far better than a contender can, yet at least eight playoff contending teams took a shot at a Rule V pick here. Reifert and Lavender both look like perfect choices for Colorado.
NOTE: I’m not saying take 34 Rule V picks this year; I’m saying that’s how many Rule V picks Farmer’s salary would pay for.
hiflew
No it wouldn’t. Kyle Farmer’s salary would pay for 4 picks maybe. You are not taking into account the $740,000 minimum salary you will be paying the selected player for the entire year.
HatlessPete
Idk that the r5 draft has ever been highly rated enough to be overrated lol
MoneyBallJustWorks
the Jays seriously claimed a guy who has been hit hard at every level so far? would have got more out of passing
Ducey
Part of it, no doubt, is that he had TJ in June, so they can likely stash him on the DL all year. Also, he has always started. Often guy’s stuff ticks up and their control becomes less of an issue when turned into a RP.
hiflew
Am I wrong or didn’t the Rule 5 draft used to take place on the Thursday of the Winter Meetings? It used to be almost every year. Monday was the biggest signing. Tuesday was usually the biggest trade. Wednesday was usually the volume signing day and Thursday was generally quiet except for the Rule 5. Then almost nothing happened until after the New Year.

The Blue Jays are going to carry Bastardo on the 40-man all season? Guy has never pitched above AA and had a 5.38 ERA last year. Seems like there must be better options for depth relievers out there.
Ducey
See my comment above. He had TJ in June. Likely can stash on DL for the year.
bcjd
Interesting theory. Even if that works, I’m not sure I see a reason to claim him. So far he’s marginal even for the purpose of AAA roster filler.
hiflew
But then they’d have to carry him all year next year AND lose a year of club control this year.
Rsox
Kind of surprised the Sox passed with recent successes like Whitlock and Slaten but i guess there was nothing worth potentially having to carry all season available for them

Jonathan Mayo lists the Cardinals Fernandez as one of the top 10 Rule V picks of the last decade.

Why didn’t you mention Ryan Fernandez (taken by the Cardinals from the Red Sox) as one of the key picks from last year?

WTF.? Dodgers leave Kody Hoese 3B off the 40 man and he was Rule 5:eligible per roster resource and the A’s don’t take him.

Can a team trade a player selected in the Rule 5 draft? I assume it’s rare and surely they’re subject to same waiver rules. If so, any recent examples of this? Thanks!

That is exactly how the Reds got Josh Hamilton years ago. I want to say it was the Cubs who took him from the Rays in the Rule V draft and immediately traded him to Cincinnati.

Never forget the best player, including pitcher and positional player ever taken in the Rule 5 draft was Johan Santana. I tiny think it’s debate worthy. Nobody had been close since. Now that was an amazing pick! Santana was amazing right away with the Twinsaa reliever, eventually converting back into a starter. The Twins used to have great scouts and talent evaluators back then. He did great as a free agent by signing a huge contract from the Mets, unfortunately he was never as good as when he was with the Twins, except for a no-hitter.

There’s no round limit in R5, just fyi. Teams can keep picking as long as their 40 Man isn’t full from previous picks.
