The Padres won 93 games and went into October as a trendy pick for a long playoff run. Their bats stalled out in the final two games against the Dodgers, sending them into an offseason that could see a decent amount of turnover with a handful of important free agents.

It seems like every offseason in San Diego results in a significant shakeup. This winter will probably be no exception, even if the Padres aren't going to make a single move that is as impactful as last winter's Juan Soto/Michael King blockbuster. Between a hefty arbitration class, a number of free agents who played key roles in 2024, and a late-season injury that dealt a hit to their rotation, there's a lot for the front office to address.
The offseason kicks off with option and qualifying offer decisions. There's not much intrigue with San Diego's pair of option calls. Wandy Peralta will forego his chance to opt out of the remaining $13.15MM on his free agent deal. Ha-Seong Kim will collect a $2MM buyout on his mutual option and test the market.
San Diego probably won't issue a QO to any of their free agents. The midseason trade renders Tanner Scott ineligible, not that the Friars were likely to offer a $21.05MM commitment to a reliever anyhow. Kim once seemed like an easy call for the QO, but his late-season labrum surgery makes that too risky. The only other candidate would be Jurickson Profar, who'll be one of the tougher free agents to value after a career year. If the Padres expect Profar to repeat this year's production, he'd be worth the QO price. Profar's career has been wildly inconsistent, though, and there's probably not enough payroll space to offer the first-time All-Star more than $21MM while addressing multiple holes on the roster.

Replace Profar, NO QO
Trade Cease, sell high, clear 14 mill off payroll
Bring back Perez, possibly sign Kikuchi?
Bogaerts at SS, cronenworth at 2B, Arraez at 1B.
Bring in a bat DH. Ozuna? Turner? Pederson? Martinez?
Call it an off season.
Blackpink in the area
I would put Arraez at DH and go get a 1b there are a lot of 1b available this offseason. And they gotta find a catcher. Can’t trade Cease. Wouldn’t bring back Perez. Kikuchi might make sense sure.
Shrutefarm
I don’t know. To me, Arraez doesn’t fit. Yes, he can get you a hit in a big spot 30% of the time, but he just seems too “one-dimensional”. He hits over .300, has over 600 plate appearances, yet only has a WAR of 1.0? He doesn’t walk, doesn’t hit for power, nor does he have much speed. His defensive metrics don’t stand out either. Not what you want from a 1b or a DH IMO.
jbigz12
Doesn’t really matter where you get production from. Arraez can fit as a 1B/DH if you’re getting enough slugging from other positions. He’s expensive for what he brings to the table right now though.
Gwynning
No QOs this year, I (almost) guarantee it.
I’d keep Cease- you’re not going to find a TOR for less, and a TOR guy is needed beyond King and Yu. Add on the margins, bring back Perez to be a 5/6 like Waldron and Vasquez and the depth should be fine. I’d look to add Springs from Tampa- AJ picks their pocket more often than not. Bring Wade back for Utility again and everything should be peachy.
padrepapi
Keeping Cease seems like an easy decision. His 224 k’s and 1.07 whip were only matched by Peavy once or twice as a Padre. One of the games most durable arms when they really need a bankable 30+ start. Getting a great 4 or 5 win season out of him for 14m and a being almost a sure thing QO recipient providing a quality prospect after he leaves seems great to me.
Only way I’d trade him would be for a package that included an arm like Musgrove when they got him that has 2-3 years of control and has already proven to be a quality starter with upside for more.
Brew’88
Baez is ready I think (maybe?). Make him #6 in rotation see how it goes
I Believe We Can Win
I think it was mlbtr that said padres are projected to be about 243.
Idk if ownership wants to break tax barriers
Roster resource has them at 231 I think
Anyways 2025 the cbt is 241. So padres being 10 mill under doesn’t leave much room.
They got cease at a good cost but can sell high and clear 14 mill to address other areas of need.
Only way is trade cease is if you got pitching back.
Definitely agree with bringing back Perez and taking a shot at kikuchi- I’d offer 7-10 mill a year for 2-3.
Replacing Profar, finding a DH/1B, bringing back Higgy idk if you can do it that in 10 mill and leave room for in season additions. Maybe they cut fat elsewhere but where is the question.
websoulsurfer
What areas of need? With Musgrove down for 2025, the Padres biggest area of need is quality pitching that can take the ball every 5th game and eat innings.
The Padres are not going to get back help for 2025 by trading away their most durable arm that just happens to be a #2-#3 starter.
The Padres can backfill areas like backup catcher, 4th OF and utility IF from what they have on the farm and cheap signings like Higgy and Solano. Look at the 40 man and top levels of the minors. Ornelas and Lockridge in the OF, Rosario and McCoy in the infield. All have shown they are close to MLB ready.
DH is going to be a position that is filled as a way to rest guys while keeping their bat in the lineup just like 2024. No player started more than 51 games at DH this season and I doubt that anyone will start much more than that in 2025.
Big whiffa
@ I believe,
I think pads will have to bite bullit and go way over threshold to start season unless they unload a major contract. Then reevaluate as season goes on
Kim and pads agreeing on that 8 mil is a possibility
And they have to resign profar. He’s gonna sign a team friendly so they have to keep him around or loose way to much offensive production
And if they get desperate it get under cap, it’ll come in terms of dealing cease, arreaz and Adams. Reds could be in on that trio to provide low salary player w tor potential like Nick Lodolo
I Believe We Can Win
Just so I’m clear
You’re fine with a
Campusano / Sullivan duo if they don’t resign higgy (higgy is coming off a career year, he won’t be cheap).
Mccoy for utility who hit .204/.278/.245 in a small sample size
And hope Ornelas and or lockridge can hold down a 4th OF type
And don’t plan on filling the LF vacancy currently.
Well. Hopefully Campusano Sullivan McCoy ornelas lockridge learn to hit mlb pitching over the winter.
I Believe We Can Win
Thorpe who got rocked around a 5 era
Zavala who hit .180 in A+
A guy white Sox used as a reliever in Iriarte
And Steve Wilson
Yeah I think they can beat that deal if they trade Cease
Brew’88
First and foremost, we’re playing checkers when AJ will be playing Stratego. And with pieces we don’t have the luxury to see yet on the table. So let me dream on like the rest of you:
We don’t know what the FO is giving AJ to play with in terms of payroll. I get last year’s reset of the CBT, but does it mean they give AJ some freedom this year to exceed? I don’t think so, at least not at the start of the season. With playoff revenue and 3rd highest attendance in MLB, it will be telling to see what unfolds financially in 2025.
Kim is gone unless Sheel intervenes. Hope she doesn’t. Thanks for the hustle and grit.
I think we see only one of Profar or Higgy next year, but not both. If not Higgy, then the starting catcher in 2025 will be the same guy as it was last year, and there will be an experienced back-up acquired via trade or FA. Valenzuela didn’t perform too well in minors this last year.
If Profar doesn’t return, then LF will be filled by someone not presently on the 40 man or in the minors. They might give Tirso a shot in spring. Who knows!? I hope AJ finds another super deal for a guy like Peralta as back up OF.
They won’t trade Cease. A lot of folks are down on him for playoff performance, but he’s really good, and healthy, and SP is a big need (for every team) and they can’t replace his 2025 value. If aiming high, they will probably try to work a trade to acquire SP who has just one or two years of control (a bridge to Bateman and Mayfield?), or if the team wants to exceed CBT they might sign a pricier FA (very unlikely). Maybe they bring back Perez but what would he cost? Or they just run with Vasquez, Waldron and perhaps Brito and maybe Baez to go with Cease, King and Yu. Not entirely drunken decision if they do. Longshot: Ryan Bergert!
Bullpen is set and frankly looks strong even with the loss of Scott. Reynolds and Neighbors are possible additions; I doubt they make any veteran adds unless they sign a lefty addition because they don’t have enough faith in Matsui and Morejon. Longshot: Francie Pena
I played baseball and am now just an aging fan. Play-acting the role of a GM sets off the same reaction in me that I get when handed a mic in karaoke. RUN!
Brew’88
The Snelling trade has even more potential for deep regret imo
jbigz12
I agree. Snelling has a higher ceiling if the fastball velo comes back.
If not then he and Thorpe probably wind up being backend starters. Iriarte’s control is concerning and the White Sox are just a terrible landing spot. Zavala has serious hit tool issues—-those prospects typically end up busting. I think in the end the cost of Cease is going to look pretty cheap.
I Believe We Can Win
Well prellers hit more trades than he has missed. Hes also found guys thru the years in low minors who’ve made it to the show. Probably one of his best traits is identifying talent in the minors.

Nice made up stat.
Prellers actually gotten more war from guys he’s acquired than traded away. Both in total value and average war per player.
Cap & Crunch
I think SD will go past the CBT by a good margin next year
With King and Cease in walk years they really don’t have a choice if you zoom out on their spreadsheet
Id just hold off on an Arraez ext, I know he’s beating the drum but Id be comfortable putting off talks for the whole year with him. Theres going to be some lean years at the end of the 2020s for SD but it wont come next year
They’ll resign Higgy Imo, too valuable per dollar amount to not
I Think they will wait out Profar and Profar wont find big dollars on the free market, good chance they can nab him too after the fallout
I dont see any deals extending farher than 3 years out but I do see them spending big money and exceeding the CBT. Even Scott on a 3/42 ? could be in play for them
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@Cap & Crunch
They’d try to do an extension with Arraez so they can pay him something closer to 8 to 10 million for multiple years, instead of 16 million for 2025.
I think you’re right that the Pads will have no choice but to go past the CBT, at least the first threshold.
That would be super cool if they could keep Scott, but if you’re Tanner, why stay here when you can be a closer somewhere else? I think you’d need to go well past $50 million to be anywhere close to getting him to come to the table.
Brew88
Despite rumors out on internet that are suggesting they trade Adam and go for Scott, I see no chance of affording Scott.
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@Brew88 The internet has some fun ideas.
Cap & Crunch
Sd is a a nice place to stay!
I agree he will probably fetch 50+ and not in SD: my bigger point was they will spend and be in all sorts of different markets this offseason as long as they are under 3 years..
websoulsurfer
Padres are over the CBT threshold right now after being at $231 million in 2024 according to COTS. If those numbers are right, the question is only how much they will break the CBT threshold by. As a 1st year offender, the fines are miniscule. If they had not dipped under in 2024, the 4th year fines and losses of draft pick position and international free agent money in 2025 would have been huge.
websoulsurfer
So Ryan, try to lay out those trades Preller supposedly lost vs trades he won since since 2021 if you can.
You can use any of your many accounts to answer. We all know they are still you.
websoulsurfer
Higgy is going into his age 35 season. He will be cheap. He might get as much as a 40% or even 50% raise which means a $3 million salary. As I said, cheap.
Campusano will be back either as the starter or as a backup.
Wade would be the utility player, not McCoy.
A 32-year-old Profar with one good season is not going to be expensive either. $6-7 million AAV over 3 gets it done. Maybe with a 4th year tacked on as an option.
Ornelas can hit and finally started hitting for power. Can we expect what he did in El Paso, a place where close to an .800 OPS was the average for anyone with more than 200 PA? Of course not. But it does project out at .260/.345/.425/.760 in San Diego which is almost exactly Profar’s .257/.349/.403/.753 numbers as a Padre. If Profar wants $10 million AAV, Ornelas would be a decent replacement with the bat but could not replace the Profar vibe.
websoulsurfer
Brew, answering your post, but really answering all those before too.
Kim is gone. That was one thing that Ryan was right about. If he picks up his end of the option, the Padres will decline theirs. He will be back sometime in June and with that type of injury to his throwing shoulder the chances of him hitting or throwing as well as before the injury in his first 3-4 months back are miniscule. Let him walk.
The Padres, FO/coaching staff/players, would love to have Profar back and he would a Padres. The question is ego worth more to him then winning? He is not getting $10 million in San Diego or anywhere based on one good season at 31. For his career he has averaged <1 WAR per season and post COVID as a Padre he has averaged 1.3 WAR per season. If he will take a $6-7 million AAV over 2-3 seasons possibly with opt outs and a team option for a 4th year, they probably get a deal done. If he is asking the 4/40 some on here think then he is gone.
If Profar leaves, Tirso Ornelas is the new LF. He is already on the 40-man roster, and he can hit. There might be a short-term learning curve in the majors, but a guy like Solano or Peralta or both that will cost less than $5 million combined would be the perfect insurance policies.
It would be stupid to move Cease and Preller is not stupid. Cease is 33 TOR starts per season and his 2025 salary is very reasonable. The Padres don't have a replacement in house and would not get back MLB ready talent for him The point is 2025, not down the road. Try to extend him during the 2025 season if it is as successful as 2024. I would be blown away if he is traded.
Padres have Vazquez, Waldron, and Brito that all have MLB experience and some guys coming like Baez, Cruz, and Bergert that could also eat some innings if needed. I still think they need a LH starter, but Morejon is not the guy. I believe they are far more likely to get that guy in a trade than in FA unless Martin Perez takes a large pay cut on a prove it contract in SD. Do Padres go with 6-man rotation to limit innings for everyone?
Higgy is going into his age 35 season and will be lucky to get much over $3 million. 2-year, $6 million deal would be ideal since Salas will be here in 2026. I think bringing Higgy back is a priority, but don't expect him to recreate 2024. Is there anyone available in trade market that can do more? Possibly and if there is, that would be the other option.

I know. Your list is very short. My list isn’t complete. I can still add plenty of names.
There’s a reason about 3% of prospects make it.
More to the point. Prellers received more WAR via trades than he’s lost. Both in total WAR and acerage WAR.

The funny thing is if any of the 60 made it you’d use it against Preller but since they didn’t you downplay trading them for mlb guys and getting mlb production.
Which is a nice way of saying no one should take you seriously cause you aren’t objective in the least.
But that was obvious when you mentioned Cal Quantril 4.97 era and 5.55 FIP last year and Joe Ross who’s never played in more than 30 games in a season his entire career as guys Preller should regret trading.

False but you can’t prove it wrong. Cause facts and numbers say preller has received more war from players he’s acquired than traded away. Sorry facts hurt.
I Believe We Can Win
So cubs have gotten 0 mlb production out of darvish trade. Your retort is just gibberish ignoring facts
And if any of those guys you mentioned became something you’d whine more about Preller trading them. But since they didn’t pan out you downplay Preller trading them.
Again. Just proving no one should take you seriously. So we won’t take you seriously.
websoulsurfer
Ryan will NEVER admit he is wrong. Ever. No matter how many facts you lay down. He will attack you personally or use whataboutism from some post you made years ago.
I Believe We Can Win
I never admitted that because I’ve never used that name lmao. Now you’re just making stuff up or getting senile and confusing ppl you get into arguments with.
Pretty easy to prove Preller has received more war from players he’s traded for than players he’s traded away
Cause Preller acquired more mlb ready players than he’s traded away. When you’re trading for guys at the mlb level
Darvish, Musgrove, Nola, Upton, Kemp, Norris, Higgy, Soto, King, Vasquez, Tatis Jr, Drury, Scott, Adam, Snell, over the years while giving up guys who never made the show pretty easy to start racking up war vs those you traded away. Common sense stuff really.
“I don’t like your list cause it proves me wrong that preller loses trades” well that sucks. Don’t be wrong about stuff you say
“Still young” uh huh I’ll worry about them when they finally reach the majors and contribute at above replacement level for 5+ years. Not really worried about the next Ty France who has a couple good years then falls off the cliff or pitching prospects getting injured elsewhere that we traded away. 0 war so far for many
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@I Believe
“Pretty easy to prove Preller has received more war from players he’s traded for than players he’s traded away”
It is. This thread has done a pretty good job.
More to the point, the team just got done with a 93 win campaign that came one victory short of the NLCS. The pre-2022 talking points about Preller are out the window. That’s what happens when you orchestrate a winning season, particularly working under the constraints that he did. (And technically, three winning seasons in a row, with two playoff appearances.)
Preller’s critics don’t have to like it, but he just bought himself at least a few more years of running this organization.
Longtimecoming
I agree on Pro – maybe his original SD contract with opt outs even. I too look for to ST with Tirso given a legitimate shot to translate his 2024 into a shot at LF.
Also agree on Higgy and Campy.
Bring back Solano, maybe even Peralta – both cheap – as bench bats.
Sign a 3/4 guy for rotation and let’s roll.
I Believe We Can Win
“Didn’t move the needle”
You cant back up your claim that for every trade Preller makes he loses 5.
You can’t disprove Preller has more WAR from players he’s acquired compared to players he traded away
So you try to weasel your way into a new argument about “moving a needle”. No. The topic is WAR of players he’s acquired compared to what he gave up.
For instance, Luke Voit generated more war for padres than Justin Lange did for Yankees. Fact. Just because Voit “didn’t move a needle” doesn’t disprove tha fact Voit gave the Padres more war than Lange has the Yankees.
So your “moving the needle” argument is not only silly it’s completely disproven by a single example.
This is why nobody takes you seriously.
Longtimecoming
I believe – I’ve only seen your side of the argument because not only do I not take Ryan seriously, I don’t even see him anymore!
I Believe We Can Win
“ Only trades you just mentioned that Preller for sure won were Tatis and Snell.”
He won the Tatis trade
He won the Snell trade
He won the Cronenworth trade (gave up renfroe and edwards)
He won the Drew Pomeranz trade from the A’s
He won the Chris Paddack trade
He won the Derrick Norris trade getting Avila
He won the Strahm Ruiz trade
He won the Craig Kimbrel trade from Atlanta
He’s won the Darvish trade
He’s won the Joe Musgrove trade
He’s gonna win the Soto to Yankees trade cause Yankees Soto for 1 year posted 7.9 WAR-
King posted 4.1, higgy posted 1.4, Vasquez gave them 0.4. So another year of King will create more WAR than Soto produced.
Won the Profar trade with the A’s
Look man. Proving you wrong is getting tiring. Could you at least look stuff up before you say something stupid?

Future war? LMAO yeah I’m sure many people expected mallex smith and Dustin Peterson and many guys to produce war someday but never did. Taylor Trammel too. Safe to say they won’t be producing future war LMAO.
I Believe We Can Win
“I’m gonna count Joe Ross as future war 8 years after he was traded from the padres and was with Milwaukee instead of Washington after spending majority of his career injured or ineffective! That’ll show preller was wrong to trade him even though he wouldn’t have helped all those years!”
Alright LMAO.
Guess you’re gonna add Travis jankowski to the list after he bounced around the league from multiple teams before settling in as a platoon player overcoming his injury troubles too in 2021 and 2023. That’ll show Preller!
Just keep reminding us to not take you seriously.

You as an adult know what skijity toilet is. Which is a kids phrase. Why you’re into kids things and want to know what kids are talking about and what their lingo means so you can use kids lingo is just plain weird for an adult to do. Esp when talking to other adults. Capn, the reason to extend Arraez now is to lower his cap hit. He is not going to get the $14.6 million he is predicted by this site to get in arbitration as an AAV in a long-term deal, probably not more than $11 million, so his extension would lower his AAV by $3-4 million in 2025 which would help the Padres spend elsewhere. Coincidentally what they save in 2025 by extending Arraez is about what it will take to sign Higgy.
Scott is not coming back. That is pretty much a given. His camp is talking about a 5-year, $90 million deal. That is not happening in San Diego.
I can see the Padres signing Profar to a 3-year deal with a 4th year team option. 3/18 with a $10 million option with a $3 million buyout. Maybe give him an opt out after the first year.
After 2025 Hosmer comes off the books and the CBT goes up in the final year of the CBA giving them more money to spend to lock down other players.
Padres had 4 sold out home games in the postseason that put an estimated $60 million in additional revenue in their coffers. I fully expect them to go over the CBT this offseason by $20+ million. Maybe more if the rumors about a reunion with Snell are real.
Simm
My guess is Kikuchi will sign a deal worth 14m aav or more.
I don’t think they will bring in a dh only player. When you do that it doesn’t allow you to use the dh to give guys days off without not playing you dh bat. While they will need to bring in someone my guess is it’s someone who can actually play the field. They already have a risky guy playing the field in Arraez.
If I’m the padres I leave pitching as is and add another quality pitcher to the mix if not two (one being a Perez type that shouldn’t cost much). Doing so will raise them a decent amount obive the tax line bite they can easily fall back below the following year with Cease, King, Arraez being free agents and hosmers money falling off. Plus in 2026 they will have Musgrove back.
They will need to add a catcher perhaps that’s higgy.
They will also need to find a new left fielder. They can look for a low cost player here.
Keep in mind this is preller and he will likely find a way to make a trade or 10.
Bottom line if they add some payroll this year they can do so while freeing up payroll in 2026.
padrepapi
Has anyone looked at how all the hitting prospects performed after being traded last year?
Jacob Marsee, Samuel Zavala, Nathan Martorela, Graham Pauley, J.D. Gonzalez all stunk. Dillon Head got hurt after 3 games. I think only Homer Bush Jr. did well and he just matched his pre-trade performance.
Preller will definitely be making some trades.
websoulsurfer
Preller understands something that not many people here do. More than 80% of top 100 prospects never become impact players, meaning league average or better, in the majors.
Less than 1 in 5 become good players. So often the best use of prospects is to use most of them as capital to acquire players like Cease who have already proven they can play at the highest level. Keep the few that as the GM you see have those special qualities like we have seen in Merrill and a few others and ship the rest out.
websoulsurfer
What part of PROSPECT do you not understand Ryan? Cease is not a prospect. King is not a prospect. Vazquez is not a prospect. Brito is not a prospect. Higgy is not a prospect. ALL of them were MLB players when traded for.
Brew’88
Higgy will forego salary for more Delong guitars, he’ll play for free
A trade will happen to address SP need
Longtimecoming
Brew, maybe a Snell reunion? If not, I think there are ample mid-range (3/4 guys) in FA that could get the rotation better than it was for most of season (meaning all those weeks of JM and Yu on IL). Vásquez improves a little, Waldron improves a little (maybe he wore down as his problem), and all SD needs is a 3/4 guy added.
Resigning Higgy is almost a must do. Pro – if contract isn’t too long or too high – I’m thinking offer the same opt contract he got a few years ago even.
Simm
I like the idea of signing a guy like snell. I know it’s expensive but they have a bunch of money coming off the books next year along with Musgrove back in 2026.
If they don’t resign or extend cease, king or Arraez. They will have about 48m coming off the books next year counting hosmers money.
Let’s say they all walk after next year. They would still have snell, Musgrove and Darvish. Plus perhaps DeVries steps in to replace Arraez. Also there is a chance Suarez opts out after next season. May also see Salas in 2026, so they just need a bridge guy at catcher.
I like the idea of bringing back Peralta and solano on one year deals. Perhaps try and make a trade for a LF if they let Profar walk.
Longtimecoming
If Pro isn’t resigned, any chance on Santander if a big $ SP isn’t signed?
Bringing back Peralta and Solano on 1 year / 2 mil deals is fine with me; Pérez on a 1 year 2 mil and incentives again, if no TOR or 3/4 guy is signed just for a lefty in the 5 spot.
Simm
He will cost a decent amount. If they are going to spend any real money I think spending it on pitching is the way to go.
Of course I’d like them to do both but I have no idea what they are willing to spend yet. I just think this is the year to spend some since they can reset again next year if need be.

The padres don’t play moneyball where they make trades just for the sake of making trades, it would make no sense to trade cease since every team needs cheap good players
I Believe We Can Win
Well the point of the trade is clear 14 mill and create room on the payroll
Like they did last year with Soto.
They’re less inclined to trade cease cause they’re not over the cbt, but 10 mill away isn’t a lot of financial wiggle room.
So far the post Pete Seider era ownership doesn’t look inclined to break cbt thresholds.
They could this off season with it reset but they could opt to just stay below it like they did last year.
Time will tell what ownerships expectations for payroll are.
“We need cease to complete” yeah people said the same thing about Soto last year.
Turns out the trade that brought king, vasquez, higgy, room to get cease, bringing back Profar, turned out to produce better results than just keeping Soto.

Pads wouldn’t have made it to NLDS Games 4 and 5 with Soto on the roster, and not King, Cease, Vasquez, and Higashioka.

I don’t have a crystal ball. I have a crystal brain.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out the Pads had to trade Soto to be able to fix their roster within their financial limitations. If anything, I am restating obvious conventional wisdom.
If the Pads could have afforded to plug roster holes and pay Soto, they would have done it.
You can tell me how the Pads make the playoffs with Soto on the roster, but Waldron, Vasquez, Brito, and two unknowns as the rotation (with Musgrove and Darvish hurt), and Campusano at catcher.
I Believe We Can Win
Soto wouldn’t have stopped getting beat 8-0 in game 4
And unlike the padres dodgers probably would have walked Soto and kept pitching to guys going cold. Not pitch to him like padres pitched to Ohtani.
Informed Sportsball Discussion

To be fair, the Pads pitched Ohtani pretty well. He had the one home run and base hit that I recall.

– Extend Arraez to lower AAV. 5/52-56 with team option for $16 million with – $1-2 million buyout.
– Extend Cease – 28. Durable. 4.00 ERA over past 2 years.
– Re-sign Higgy – 2/5.5-6
– Re-sign Profar. – It will cost less than everyone thinks. Probably less than what he signed for with Colorado as an AAV over 2-3 years with incentives for games played.
– Re-sign Solano to 1-year deal for around the $2 million he made in 2024
– Trade for a solid and inexpensive young #4 starter, preferably a LHP, unless Perez will sign CHEAP. on a 1-year deal. Something like $3-4 million.
Run it back.
After 2025 Hosmer comes off the books. Then extend King.
Musgrove is back in 2026 and 2027.
Salas might be up by end of next season if what we are seeing in AFL is for real and he will be ready by the end of a 2-year deal for Higgy, who is 35 now.
De Vries will be up by his age 19 season in 2026. Probably to stay He JUST turned 18 last week. Move Bogaerts to LF/DH then and install De Vries at SS if his defense continues to progress.
2025
1B – Arraez
2B – Cronenworth
SS – Bogaerts
3B – Machado
LF – Profar
CF – Merrill
RF – Tatis
C – Campusano
DH – Solano
Bench – Higgy/Wade/Rosario(If) or Ornelas(OF)
King
Cease
Darvish
LH starter
Vasquez/Waldron/Brito/ and possibly Cruz, Baez or Berget as depth
Suarez
Adam
Estrada
Hoeing
Matsui
Morejon
Peralta
(Brito/Jacob/Reynolds/Pena/ and ???) + Cruz if they don’t stretch him out as expected
Even if Profar regresses I don’t see a glaring weakness in that lineup and after one season at $252-256 million CBT payroll, With Hosmer coming off the books and possibly Suarez as well, the Padres drop right back down near the $244 million CBT line in 2026 depending on what it costs to extend King.
padrepapi
Cease is a Boras client and with a big year and his health and age he’ll surely be looking for a monster deal, maybe even approaching 200m. I’m not sure he’d take Glasnow money today a year from free agency.
King is the one you extend. Something around 4-5 years for 60-75m. Another big year and he’ll far exceed that, but big money today to tempt him with. He’s gotta be a pretty big SD fan after finally being trusted to be a full time starter.
I think Profar will be able to do better than 2/16, but I agree his cost isn’t going to be ridiculous.
Solano and Peralta were such nice additions and I would be a fan of both returning for 2-3m a piece. Having one in the lineup and the other on the bench was great.

Preller’s moves are “win this year, worry about next year next year”.
I doubt Preller considered the possibility of extending Cease when he traded for him. A trade for Cease does not imply a plan to extend him, a la the Soto trade.
That said, I also don’t think Preller will trade Cease unless it is at the deadline and the Pads are out of it. He’ll take the QO when Cease walks.
So, you’re right that Preller didn’t care about Cease being a Boras client, because the idea of extending him wasn’t a concern.

padrepapi
@Fernando I think you’re missing the point. Preller traded for Cease knowing he was going to get two years of a potentially great starter at a reasonable cost. Signing him to a pre-FA extension was never part of the equation. It’s okay to trade for a guy, get two years of production and then make a QO to recoup a prospect that very well might be better than any given up.
As far as the “big” package given up, between Zavala falling from a borderline top 100 guy with a poor season (.641 OPS), Thorpe having elbow surgery and Irate’s K’s backing up a ton (12.8k/9 in ’23 to 8.7 k/9 in ’24), that’s looking like a great trade for SD. Steven Wilson posted a 5.71 era. If they held onto those prospects you’re not able to pull off that same trade for 2 years of an arm of Cease’s caliber today with that bunch. Heck, I don’t think Preller would give up a year of Cease for that group.
Preller’s track record trading for established starters is getting better adding Cease to the previous steals getting Snell, Darvish & Musgrove. Targeting established arms with 2 or 3 years of control is a real strength of his not to mention his willingness to give up prospect capital to facilitate the trades.
padrepapi
The only guy given up in the Darvish & Musgrove trades 4 years ago that have provided any big league value is David Bednar. Owen Cassie might turn out to be a productive big leaguer yet but all those other prospects are basically out of the equation at this point and Joey Lucchesi is no big loss. I take that outcome every day of the week and both trades were big wins for Preller, IMO.
I agree they’re not about to trade Cease or Arraez.

I think the Padres should trade Salas if they can get a good offer. The team is in win now mode. I think the Padres crushed it in last years draft they got some really exciting young guys in the system and they will probably draft well again next year. Might as well keep trading them away for now.
Gwynning
Salas and Leo aren’t being shopped and won’t be moved for less than an almost immeasurable haul.

The haul could be someone taking a bad contract to get them under the cap
Gwynning
The CBT is reset, whiffa. I’m sure they would have no problem going into CBT territory for another year or two instead of liquidating their best assets.

Salas is the most over rated prospect in baseball. His rankings will plummet this year even if he has a drastically better season than last. He was horrible this year.
Gwynning

metsin4
That pretty much describes his season this year.
padrepapi
I’d keep Salas. He’s off to a good start at the AFL, good bet to have a bounceback year in ’25 and having him as their every day catcher making near league minimum in 2026-2028 will be a welcome addition to the vet heavy roster.
Blackpink in the area
Counting on Salas as yout everyday catcher in 2026 seems ridiculous.
Padres are in win now mode.
Salas for Garret Crochet. That’s probably about right. Padres would be fools not to do that deal.
padrepapi
Are the Sox making that 1-1 trade today? Seems like they have a big asking price for their stud lefty and I’m not sure Salas alone after his 2024 season would accomplish that. I think Preller would consider that.
I wouldn’t put it past the team being content having Salas be their every day catcher in 2026 batting 9th. They are baseball’s most aggressive team when it comes to promoting prospects.
Blackpink in the area
I think the value is fair but catcher isn’t the White Sox biggest need.
If Salas is the starter in 2026 then so be it. But counting on it seems silly st this point. He didn’t have a good 2024.
Rays would probably want Salas. Jays and Twins need long term catching help.
The Padres window is already closing. They are going to have to make some trades to keep it going just like they have done recently. Last year Padres fans said Snelling and Lesko weren’t going to be dealt. Then they were.
padrepapi
You can’t tell me that a team with a 25 year old Tatis and a 21 year old Merrill window is closing. Two of the best young talents in the game that will Padres for a long long time.
Having the 2nd best attendance in baseball will go a long way to keep the sky is falling thoughts astray.
Blackpink in the area
Tatis is well paid. Merrill is cheap for a bit but some of these contracts are going to age poorly. The Soto trade last year worked out. They made numerous trades at the deadline. I would expect more trades in order to keep the window open as long as possible.
Longtimecoming
Black, I think all Padres fans will acknowledge that some contracts may age poorly. That said, it’s the nature of the game if you want to compete. I submit that most of not all playoff teams have such contracts – Cleveland maybe not, but all of the higher end payroll teams in mlb have them.
Philly is taking about not even have Realmuto as an every day catcher if the posts on here are accurate. Stanton? Mookie? Ohtani – paying him how much at age 50?; maybe even Freeman, Kershaw.
It’s just the way it is. The goal being to get better than you pay a few years up front to average it.
I’d never count Preller out of the trade market that is one thing for sure.
Gwynning
Joel, i would retort that the Padres are not in “win now” mode. Pads are in winning mode, period. AJ will make us “contenders” every year for the foreseeable future.
Blackpink in the area
That’s optimistic Randy.
Gwynning
C’est la vie, Bita.
HatlessPete
By the time Merrill gets deep into arb there will be light at the end of the tunnel or expiration for contracts like Musgrove and dervish and suarez, and presumably some expensive late arb players on the club right now will be gone in free agency. At that point tatis will still be in his prime years. There is definite albatross potential for bogie and Machado but iirc the padres tacked on more years to tamp down the aav on those deals, and those deals will have less present value over time from inflation. Cronenworths deal has a lot of years remaining but a low and manageable aav. Would be worth seeing if they can get Merrill extended at a bit of a pre arb discount and fiscally beneficial structure rn under these circumstances imo
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@Gwynning And that was what AJ talked about since Day 1: building a sustainable year in, year out winner.
He is fortunate he has had enough leash to get through all those years where it didn’t work, to now where it is finally starting to work. The question now is whether Preller can sustain a winner with a more limited payroll as this core ages.

The White Sox would be fools to do that deal. Salas can’t even get a .600 OPS in the lowest of minor leagues.

He’s off to a good start at the AFL
=============================
Salas has a 9/1 K/W in just 28 PAs. SSS and all, but that’s horrible.
My prediction is that he gets traded.
padrepapi
6 xbh in 28 PA’s and a .937 OPS are a good start for an 18 year old in the AFL facing much older competition even if he’s struck out 30% of the time.
Gwynning
Salas isn’t getting shipped because he’s struck out 9 times against the AFL competition. He’s a (probable) franchise cornerstone. All prospects are suspects, but some less so, JB.
JoeBrady
Two things worry me.
The first is that I don’t like strikeouts in prospects. And Salas has 173 Ks in 666 ABs. He has 77 walks, which is good, but that’s a lot of swing-and-miss.
The second is that he had a .455 OPS against lefties this year.
He’s young for A+, but I feel like catchers are more uncertain than other positions. I’m also suspicious that Salas never hit the AA level, plus the fact that Campusano still has 4 years of control. I think Preller has gotten value for his investment and will cash in his chips.
Gwynning
2 things that don’t worry me- he’s barely 18 and he’s already #19 (fittingly for SD…) on the MLB Prospect list. He’s a keeper, but I also understand why others want him traded… because they want him on their team. He’ll ease into the role in ’26, maybe ’27 behind Campy unless he absolutely destroys Spring Training. AJ keeps “his” keepers (Tatis, Merrill, Morejon, et al.) and isn’t shy about promoting “early” if he feels that it is time.
Salas and Leo project as keepers if you pay close enough attention to Preller’s statements and media sessions.
Cheers JB!
padrepapi
He saw a nice improvement in his k rate in 2024, which was at 20.9% (98 k’s in 469 PA) down from 25.8% the year prior.
His 20.9% rate is actually better than mlb average in ’24 (21.8%).
Based on that I wouldn’t be surprised if he was above average in that department down the road as a big leaguer.
Let’s keep in mind he was 17 the first two months of the season spending the entire year in high A ball which is damn rare.
Gwynning
youtu.be/v7q2LLAepMw?si=a1VJJsS5jiBOLhL2

They would be shooting themselves in the foot on the return if they used Salas to dump Xander. If preller does that (he wont) padres fans should be mobbing up with pitchforks and torches and marching on petco. I don’t understand mlbtr commenters’ obsession with the idea of using prospects to dump salary. Salas is not the caliber of prospect you do that with. If you move a guy like him it needs to be for an impact elite upside, win now mlb contributor like Garrett crochet. And the padres need a catcher of the future way more than they.need to dump Xander. The problem isn’t so much that he’s the best player, it’s that he’s the dominant personality, so the team are loudmouth showboats when it goes well but meek chokers when the opposition fights back. That said, the Padres have made improvements in culture lately–getting rid of the laughable Grisham, acquiring Arraez who provides professionalism at the plate and who should absolutely be kept, and I like what I heard from Merrill in the face of losing–he’s a gamer. Machado is a very useful player but the team should not take its character from him, and hopefully offseason adjustments can help with that.
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@highfly
How are the Pads supposed to take winning, or losing? Is there a magic sweet spot of “just enough edge without being an a-hole” you will find acceptable? Just enough humility in defeat without being a meek loser? Do we need score cards to judge this?
I have seen zero difference, none whatsoever, in the way a Tatis or a Manny celebrates a home run or backs up their guys vs. the way a Betts or a Roberts does it. Except for this: the Pads aren’t liars. Roberts enlisted Ken Rosenthal to cry wolf about the ball throw that wasn’t, and he knew it wasn’t. I’m even old enough to remember Dave Roberts shoving then Padre manager Andy Green. He got a pass for that, and for lying now, but Manny is still a bad guy no matter what he does.
People who want to paint Manny as a villain will do it however they need to get there. It’s beyond tedious at this point. When the rest of the league decides not to back up their guys, celebrate home runs with chest bumps (or crotch bumps if you’re a Dodger), and execute legal slides, I’ll be willing to listen on how dastardly Manny is. As stands, I think his critics just blame him for Dustin Pedroia, and should admit their bias against him.
kzw
I mean…the guy purposely hit Derek Norris with his back swing and then threw his bat Josh Donaldson because he didn’t like that he was tagged. He’s a punk and a villain. And since you brought it up as your example…in my opinion, the Pedroia play was nothing more than a baseball play. He slid late, to break up a double play. He raised his spikes once he got to the bag so he doesn’t jam his foot/ankle into the bag, and hit Pedroia. He didn’t extend his leg at all. He didn’t drive his foot into his leg. Yeah…I’m sure he did want to hit him, but I don’t think he truly meant to hurt him.
Gwynning
kzw- Thanks for the post, but I would remind you that your 2 examples (Norris & JD) happened over 10 years ago. Anecdotally speaking, and I am honestly not being biased here, but Manny has been a class act since his San Diego introduction. Informed Sportsball’s comment above absolutely crushed it.
Shrutefarm
I loved how Manny handled the Flaherty thing. He was honest and forthright that Flaherty made a great pitch and gave him credit. Now, Tatis……that’s a different story. One could argue that his mocking the LA crowd stirred up a laying beast in LA. I saw a different intensity from LA after that game. We used to call that “bulletin board” material.
Gwynning
That’s fair, Dwight. I was shaking my head at Tatis’ hip swivelling; he might do better to just “pay them no mind” in the future, but he’s “intense” and loves the spotlight.

I can’t disagree on Bogaerts. Not hitting, missed two months, and tossed in errors at his natural position down the stretch.
My heart wants him to somehow put together a few great years, but my head says even solid years would be a dream at this point. Seidler’s push to win it all had at least one downside, and his name is Bogaerts.
truthlemonade
I think that the team knew that the contracts would be trash at the end, and might even plan on releasing guys before their contracts are up.
Machado will turn 41 in July 2033, and Bogaerts will turn 41 on October 1 of that year.
This season there were zero position players aged 41, and only Yuli Gurriel was 40 and he only played 18 games.
Manny’s contract will probably age better than Bogaerts, and Manny seems to be in great position to reach 3000 hits as a Padres. Bogaerts also has a chance, albeit much smaller, or reaching 3000.
jbryant0693
It will be well in advance of 41 though, when Machado’s contract is really bad. Bogaerts is already there pretty much. They better win in the next couple years.

To be fair to Boegarts, after he returned from his shoulder injury he hit .292/.333/.429 (113 OPS+) in the 2nd half. Similar to the .285/.350/.440 (117 OPS+) he posted with SD in ’23. A definite downgrade from his Boston days, but I don’t think he is a lost cause by any means.
I expect he’ll hit well enough to be an everyday player for 5 or 6 years while spending the last 3-4 years as a vet bat to spot start. Not a great outcome, but he will provide some value and his approach to hitting should age well.

I agree ! Everyone’s line takes a hit playing in SD too (except profar apparently). Plus he was consistent rock in Boston. He will be just fine with a bat in his hand
JoeBrady
Plus he was consistent rock in Boston.

In Fenway really. He had an .870 OPS in Fenway, and more like .760 on the road. He can still hit some, but can’t really play SS, and feels like he is developing chronic wrist issues.

Sucks that these offseason outlook articles used to be free.
First rule of introducing fees: never take away what was already free in the past. Only charge for new content.

Doesn’t really matter. It’s either numbers you can see on your own or an opinion piece.
Most fans of these teams aren’t really getting anything from this article that they don’t get from reports on the team that can be seen many other places. They don’t have some inside connection to these teams. I come here because the value is one spot that collects information as well as being able to chat with other fans.
I don’t come here because I get ground breaking Padres news. Reporters break stories before they are ever on this site.

Oh I agree. I’m just saying, as a follower of the site for more than a decade, they are kind of doing the subscription thing incorrectly IMO and it’s disappointing.

That Tatis deal looks like a steal compared to other contracts on the books.

Thanks for letting them live rent free in your head.

Padres will have some hard decisions to make soon, the tv contracts they sign with Machado, Darvish, Bogaerts, Cronenworth, these four contracts alone will not be off the books until the 2030’s. All four of these players will be in their upper 30’s and 40’s. Who and what team will want these players in trades, they will not be everyday players. There skills will erode no stopping father time. Face it, Padres will be stuck with an old roster down the road, unless they just decide to release and pay the contracts off, heck they still owe the Boston Red Sox over 12 mil for the Hosmer contract.
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@desertdawg Not hard decisions. The Pads signed those contracts with the understanding they would outlive the effectiveness of the players.
Getting revenue streams to replace the defunct Bally TV deal, and continually getting good players out of the farm system; those are the tasks requiring heavy lifting.
truthlemonade
Darvish is signed through 2028, he turns 42 that year. Were you thinking about Tatis?

Ohtani will be in his 60s then he comes off the books
padrepapi
@Brew LMAO!!
pepenas34
Padres made many long term contracts trying to reduce the average annually. How much of the Manny signing was because of the Boegarts signing ? They had no choice, and Manny played his hand hard.
Just wonder how is these going to look in 4 years?
Informed Sportsball Discussion
@pepenas34
Not sure why the Manny signing would be related to the Bogaerts signing.
Signing Bogaerts was seen as a hedge against Soto not being retained, which turned out to be needed and, thus far, has not been that much of a hedge.

Arraez, Bateman, Tears, Pena and King to Seattle for Luis Castillo and cash.
jbigz12
Throw in Phil Nevin and Brian Giles and they’ll think about it
FanDan
By King I mean Lamar King Jr. Take Matsui and keep the cash. Padres take back Tears.
Crunchtime1969
Bring back Perez. Higgy and Solano were productive. Profar is a difficult situation. I guess his price will decide. There’s no loyalty in MLB. Extend Merrill asap. Leave the rest of it alone.
