So Ohtani, Devers, and maybe Machado if he opts out and then a stark decline to the lower tiers
TimLincecum55
My thoughts exactly. Would this be a record low for qualifying offers made in an offseason?
Rsox
By an incredibly wide margin
Arnold Ziffel
Certainly a weaker class than this year.
johndietz
You all know damn well a lot of these guys will have career bests years going into free agency. Uriah, Giolito, Flaherty, Nola, Means, Severing, Hader, Chapman
bergeraj
Nola just had a career year he was in the top 5 in almost every meaningful pitching stat and was 4th in CY voting! He should have been mentioned with Nola Devers and Machado!
bergeraj
Sry meant Otani not Nola obviously
PhanaticDuck26
John comment did NOT AGE well
RobM
…but a year on, we know they didn’t.
YourDreamGM
Better get your position players this year.
Henry Silvestre
Padres alone will QO Manny if he opts out.. Snell.. Yu .. and Hader so that’s 4 QOs..
I think Manny AJP and Peter Siedler will sit down and extend him 10-12yrs 300 to 360 and he will be a non issue next offseason .. But if he does he is getting QO
grittyshaker
Or they let Machado walk and sign Devers to play with his former teammate
Paleobros
Henry, Siedler passed away recently. Hate to break the bad news to you.
Michael Chaney
A record low? I feel like if anything, next year’s QO class could be huge.
Hoskins, Chapman, Devers, Machado, Ohtani, Giolito, Nola, Severino, and Urias alone seem like locks. Then you add in guys who could play themselves into getting one (Gurriel, Rosario, Happ, Hernandez, Darvish, Flaherty, Gray, Montas, Montgomery, Snell, Hader, Mahle) and guys who would opt out if they play well enough to get one (Bell, Heaney, Manaea) then that’s plenty of possible candidates.
Then you have guys like Bellinger, Gallo, Clevinger, and Montas who could get one if they play up to levels they’ve shown in the past. And then a few wild cards like Renfroe and Bader who are at least decent enough to possibly be a surprise candidate.
Obviously the vast majority of those guys won’t be getting one, but there are enough guys who are seemingly locks that there should be a decent amount of guys that get one. I look forward to my comment aging poorly by next winter.
ArmChairGM-
Serevino, Urias, Hoskins, Chapman, Snell, Montgomery, Mahle, T Hernandez, Gurriel, And Happ as well

Zero percent chance devers and shohei make it to FA and Manny isn’t going to opt out
MLB Top 100 Commenter
My guess is Friars will negotiate a new deal for Manny, probably similar to old one but adding a year or two.
JonCor
Zero percent chance? That’s so dumb. Very good chance both of them will make it to FA, and very reasonable chance too that Machado will opt out depending on how this season goes for him.
marinersblue96
100% chance Ohtani is going to be a FA. He is not going to sign an extension with the Angels unless they make the playoffs and there is <5% of that.
i like al conin
@Marinersblue96: Less than 5%? Is this the first time you’ve been on this site this off-season?
marinersblue96
Less than 5% was being optimistic for the Angels. They have one really good pitcher and 4th/5th type SP for the rest of the rotation. Andersen is unlikely to match what he did for the Dodgers last year. The lineup is nothing but questions marks. Rendon isn’t very good when healthy, Trout is still a stud but outside of Ohtani the remaining lineup is below average. Drury had a career year, like Andersen I doubt he matches it again.. IMHO they will be battling with Texas for 3rd in the division.
Silver Boot Series Enjoyer
Looks like somebody already claimed the 3rd spot in the division though 🙁
myaccount2
0% chance they make it to free agency? More like 100% for Ohtani and 70% for Devers.
User 401527550
Zero percent chance they don’t go to FA. Ohtani might get $500 mil and Devers $300 mil. The drop off is drastic after them.
holecamels35
I’d take you up on 2 of those 3 happening. Red Sox lost nearly an entire 25 man roster the past two year, what makes you think they keep Devers? Manny sees what the other shortstops got who he’s arguably better than, not sure about Otani, such a rare player
websoulsurfer
Machado has not been a SS in a long time.
LFGSD619
If Devers and Shohei were going to sign extensions they would have done it by now.
metman
Sho in the big apple? Bet on it
padam
Thought the same thing. Teams may look to strike harder this year with the weak class next year. Should be interesting.
Central Valley
You forgot La Stella.
Just kidding.
Sky14
There’s also Urias, Serevino and Nola along with Giolito and Montas (if they right the ship). That seems like a pretty normal class.
Ma4170
I think Nola is just that next tier and has had some great years, but some really sub par ones too… he’s an interesting one bc he’ll probably get paid like an ace
Dorothy_Mantooth
Don’t forget about Urias too. He’s an excellent pitcher but I don’t see the Dodgers letting him get to free agency. They will lock him up sometime this year.
Dorothy_Mantooth
No idea why my message posted 3-4 times; hopefully the extras will go away. If they don’t I didn’t purposely post this multiple times.
YourDreamGM
The LA police dept might lock Urias up but the Dodgers doubtful.
Snellzilla #7
They haven’t though
BRICKHARDMEAT220
Let’s see here how many 100 mil contracts for this class.
Locks if healthy / same as 2022
Ohtani
Devers
Nola
Urias
Machado (opt out)
Yeah this class is pretty weak.
DogDays2
To quote Major League:
Who are these f guys?
RobM
Machado will opt out unless he gets injured. The money being tossed about this offseason will push him to free agency. He’s “only” owed $160MM for five seasons after 2023. He’ll easily eclipse that. He could be considered the second best free agent at that point factoring in his hitting, his defensive ability and his durability. He also could slip over to SS again.
Down in the second tier, someone like Severino could elevate himself with a 15o+ inning season, something he’s primed for. Bader may get a surprisingly high contract based on the lack of quality CFers.
The weakness of next year’s free agent class could explain why this off season has been so crazy with contracts. The quality outside the top few you mentioned is not deep.
abc123baseball
Agreed about Machado. The CF market May at least be partially satiated through trades.
Lots of baseball to play between now and November. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Some of these guys have monster years.
RobM
@Abc, agreed. There will be surprise breakouts, if not from the top-tier, then from some of the second tier. A year ago, Judge was considered one of the top three to five free agents this off season (some projections had all four SS’s ahead of him, but I could only see Correa and Turner in my view), but he obliterated those projections.
dale123
Put Urias in the top 5 as welk
ohyeadam
Don’t sleep on Julio Urias. 27 year old aces get PAID
websoulsurfer
He is more of a deuce, and he will still get paid.
Bryzzo2016
Yep, I think that’s why some front offices spent big this year. Big drop off after Ohtani, Devers and Machado(possibly) so most of the teams with money to spend next year won’t have much to spend it on.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I’m confused. Is this the same Devers we are talking about? He signed with the Red Sox… or is this from last year? Very confusing
Edit: answered my own question, but why are we recycling old topics now?
Hemlock
Devers?
(Peering into crystal ball)
I think he’s
Yes probably going to be
Wait this crystal ball is acting up
He’s going to sign a contract extension to stay in Boston
oscar gamble
@Rsox: Machado signed an extension and isn’t a free agent until 2034.
Rsox
True. But this thread is from a year ago. Since then Devers has also signed an extension and whatever currency Urias is going to get paid in isn’t going to be U.S. dollars…
Snellzilla #7
Urias should be paid US dollars.

Yankee Clipper
Just a correction for the article: you forgot to change Shohei’s uniform to NYY for the cover page pic.
compassrose
Shohie doesn’t like pinstripes wants to have a goatee and wants to wear the best alt uni it is Sunday home cream. He also wants his 1st name on his jersey. He knows of 1 team that has waded the first name waters. It is OK to feel that desperate feeling of want and you fail to get what you want. He also will look good in the Friday green unis. If you feel too bad and need a pitcher we will send you Marco. He will be an extra arm.
Joe says...
Clipper apparently lesser teams need multiple gimmicky unis. They just can’t measure up to the pinstripes and interlocking NY.
Yankee Clipper
I admit, I was thrown off by the “Friday green unis” thing. I’m not exactly sure to which team or uniform that applies.
That said, I think Shohei wants to win. West coast was nice…promises were nice. But I think he’s tired of losing, honestly. I believe his next team will be one in perennial competition & have the resources to pay him, build around him, and not have to rebuild at all.
Happy Thanksgiving, Joe.
Joe says...
Happy Thanksgiving to you too Clip. I’m guessing Seattle with his mention of Marco.
Melchez17
When Ohtani signs somewhere else, Yankee fans will say he wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure cooker.
lesterdnightfly
Breaking News:
At least 6 teams wear pinstripes as part of their regular uniforms.
Yankee Clipper
“Pinstripes and the interlocking NY”
That seems….clear to me. But to your point about pinstripes, only one team’s uniform is referred to as “the pinstripes” anyway. But the “interlocking NY” in Joe’s comment was a pretty big hint too.
myaccount2
He might not go to the Mariners, but I’m pretty confident he won’t go to the Yankees. Doesn’t seem like he wants to deal with that noise.
compassrose
I honestly doubt Seattle will go after him but might. I just like flipping crap to the NY fans that can take it. I also thought the cream unis was a give away.
Not sure why Joe thinks different unis are a gimmick. How many combinations do you haves? Lastly the name should give it away. Our hat has a compass rose on it. Most of our unis have a form on it. It will be interesting to see where he goes. Everything you mentioned is Seattle money set up to win etc. It will be interesting to see where he does go. We would have to trade a pitcher to make room for him.
Happy Thanksgiving to all you on the EC have probably eaten we are waiting for the Turkey to get done Eat some pie after you wake up from your sleep coma.
myaccount2
I’m a Mariners fan haha I’m 99.9% positive we’re going Ohtani based on some of Dipoto’s wording to a question during the year end press conference… but I’m not going to guarantee we land him.
.
Shohei wants to wear Yank pinstripes and his birthday suit at the same time!
Melchez17
I wonder if the Mets are allowed to pursue Ohtani? They will need to ask the Yankees.
Cat Mando
Shohei loves the Yankees so much that they were the first team he nixed from the list before signing with the Angels.
Yankee Clipper
Time will tell. Priorities change.
User 401527550
They aren’t willing to pay Judge. Why would you trying they would pay Ohtani?
Yankee Clipper
Substantially less money on the books + no Judge = Ohtani.
RobM
Clipper, the general vibe is he prefers the West Coast, and he should have the Dodgers, the Giants and the Angels (under new ownership) really pushing hard for his services out west. The Yankees signing Judge and their refusal to cross the Cohen tax line seemingly takes them out of the running. I can see Cohen going huge for Ohtani, and he doesn’t like to be denied, and he has Eppler, who the Yankees had shadowing Ohtani for years. Unfortunately, he went to the Angels before Ohtani was available. Will that relationship help again?
Ohtani himself may have a preference for the West Coast, so getting every last dollar may not matter. We saw that when he came over originally. Dark horse? The Red Sox? Maybe they’ve been keeping their power dry for a run at the modern Ruth to avenge the past! I’d never count the Yankees out if they decide to go all in, but will they?
angryyankeesfan1
Starting pitching market goes crazy.
Yankee Clipper
Nola is the cream of that crop.
HardensBeardHasFleas
NOLA won’t be going anywhere.
User 401527550
Most free agents leave if they make it to open market.
BlueSkies_LA
Agreed, it would be really hard to move from its current location next to the Gulf of Mexico.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I’m sure Nola will sign for more money elsewhere than Philly
Cat Mando
That didn’t age well
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
May not have, but that was my honest opinion. Not going to be right all the time, so what’s the deal in trying to make a thing of it?
Snellzilla #7
Your opinion was incorrect
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Yeah, I got that, thank you.
Cat Mando
“I’m sure Nola will sign for more money elsewhere than Philly”
. Saying “I’ Think Nola will sign for more money elsewhere than Philly. would be more of an opinion.
Saying “im sure” indicates fact…which it wasn’t. Was just pointing out the falacy.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I was saying that I accepted being incorrect. This sounds like you just want to argue responding to it. I was wrong, I accepted that, what more do you want to argue about?
Opinion was the wrong word to use… my bad. The point still stands that I was wrong, yet you want to continue to argue.
Not sure why you are so bent on wanting to argue or proving me wrong. We all make wrong predictions sometimes.
Snellzilla #7
You’re welcome. Just confirming the analysis.
Big whiffa
I agree ! I also believe he goes there bc he thrives under pressure. I think yanks loose judge but get ohtani. Boston had a shot at ohtani but there team will continue to decline by the time he makes a decision
Al Hirschen
A lot of age in this group
Big whiffa
A lot of age in all free agent groups. It’s how the game has to be designed when there’s not equal profit sharing like in football
YourDreamGM
Just a weak free agent class. Usually more stars under 30. Rigged was when they had no free agency at all. Sure owners wish it was still that way. Players agreed to the terms so don’t feel sorry for them.
CALgoldenBears
My thoughts exactly. 11 pitchers under 30 and only 6 positional players under 30. I guess baseball rigged the system so players don’t become free agents until they turn 30
Johhos
Phillies need to extend Nola; otherwise guaranteed he gets the QO.
YourDreamGM
Bold guarantee.
Bart Harley Jarvis
Astute, some might say.
Hemlock
I think he’ll get the QO
But reject it.
Saint Nick
Man..thats a weak FA class among position players.
Appalachian_Outlaw
If Winker and Rosario bounce-back and Machado opts out, 3B and LF are pretty strong. We also don’t yet know what will happen with the SS market this season. Someone could take a 1 yr deal, play the market in a weaker crop.
YourDreamGM
Maybe Correa if he is still black listed by big spenders. This should be a strong market with teams knowing what 2023 looks like.
Hemlock
> Maybe Correa if he is still black listed
I think Correa has injuries we don’t know about. Teams should order their team doctors to double-check his medical records before completing any contract with him.
I think he will stay with the Twins.
YourDreamGM
I think teams won’t be too concerned about his medicals but once I trash them for giving out one of the worst contracts in history they will use the medicals to weasel themselves out of the awful contract they offered.
solaris602
Especially catchers. That sorry bunch is gonna be worse than even this year’s 2B class.
abc123baseball
Matt Chapman is one to watch. What a difference a year makes in terms of perceived value. He could swing back to the elite tier.
.
I feel like a lot of spirits are going to be crushed when the Halos extend Shohei.
Drew Waters Bat
Ahahahaha your funny. If you really think he is gonna stay then this won’t be a happy time for you. 1 aging superstar and 1 aging overpaid star. That team is atleast 4 years away from being competitive and even then it’s not a guarantee they will be able to compete. You need Donald Glover not Shoehei Ohtani.
.
Drew, I wish I could say that you swayed me. Unfortunately, I still think he stays in Anaheim. Donald Glover? Danny Glovers son? The actor?
Drew Waters Bat
I ment to put Danny Glover. That’s not his dad. Danny Glover and Donald Glover aren’t related.
Drew Waters Bat
I was trying to put Danny Glover because for that team to be any good and competitive, it needs Angels everywhere, not just the outfield. More than 9.
.
Are you SURE they aren’t? Not even distant kinfolk? Glover is a pretty rare name…
Drew Waters Bat
Distance kinfolk is very different than father and son. Danny Glover and his wife only ever had a daughter and she didn’t marry Donald either. No relations.
.
Ok kool, we’ll stick with distant kinfolk then. I think we all descended from 2 people so it’s all relative.
myaccount2
Why would he stay in Anaheim when he said he’s not having fun, the team doesn’t win, and Moreno is selling the team?
YourDreamGM
I baseball expert and a danny glover family expert as well. Impressive.
.
DreamGM, you showed up on my 23&Me as a 5th Cousin…Was expecting you at the table this Thansgiving….If you are a no show, next year you bring the pies!
YourDreamGM
You know me and uncle Mikey go to grams. But gram ain’t looking so good so maybe next year. Meant to say A baseball expert. Definitely not I. It’s creepy but I can understand a fan obsessed with JLO or Gal or another attractive female. But Danny Glover? Someone should let him know he has stalker. He should be alerted for his safety but he might be flattered as well.
.
Yeah, I spend many hours a day attending to “Danny Glover” matters.
RunDMC
PHI gonna mess around and let Nola sneak away? Same for LAD/Urias?
cpdpoet
Nola will get extended.
C Yards Jeff
#@RunDMC: Urias, to me, is tops of this UFA class. LA is salivating to extend him. They’re eager to huddle with his agent. That’s where it gets interesting. His agent? Boras Corporation.
.
Hahahaha CYards, yeah the Dodgers seem to wait till the VERY last second to extend anyone. Remember how close Bellinger was to getting a big extension after 2019 but they got Mookie instead? Now would be the time to extend him.
C Yards Jeff
@TrumboJ; that’s the beauty of the LA organization. If Urias, next off season, ends up going to the highest bidder (and with Boras as agent a definite possibility) and if it’s not them, Blue acts on their Plan B and with immediacy. Plus, comfortable spending big bucks for the replacement if warranted.
YourDreamGM
I think LA could sign Urias really really really cheap if they wanted to.
Snellzilla #7
He’d be an upgrade to SF’s rotation
Drew Waters Bat
I thought Juan Soto was to be a free agent during this time?
PadreB2011
Soto is with SD until at least the end of 24…unless he doesn’t sign an extension from there…SD may trade him for prospects and needs at 24’s deadline.
Drew Waters Bat
Thank you.
2012orioles
I’d be totally okay if the Orioles do something this year, even if it’s considered a little too soon. Unless they plan on going all in on Ohtani
.
Shohei is already living a lavish SoCal lifestyle. Can you do that in Maryland? Plus his GF/Future wife is firmly engrained in CA. Why on Earth would he wanna go to Bal?
YourDreamGM
Orioles were over 500 and sorta in playoff race. You are the only person I heard who thinks it would be a year too early.
Because Baltimore gave him significantly more money? You don’t have much free time in season. Off season you can live wherever you want.
.
DreamGM, I like your pretty green check mark avatar, but I don’t really understand what you mean…”Year too early?”
YourDreamGM
2012 said “I’d be totally okay if the Orioles do something this year, even if it’s considered a little too soon.” I don’t believe this season is too soon and havn’t heard anyone else say that. I wasn’t a reply to you. I saved the forest by answering 2 post with just 1 post by using 2 paragraphs.
YourDreamGM
Wasn’t even disagreeing with you. I would guess on a list of all 30 teams Ohtani wants to play for Baltimore would be in the bottom 1. But IF they gave him 50 or 100 more than anyone else he might love Baltimore.
myaccount2
You think he would want to go to Baltimore less than Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Oakland, Detroit, or Colorado? I suppose you can argue over which of those 6 is the least desirable city to live in but I don’t think it’s disputable which team is in better position than the other 5.
.
I would love to live in Colorado.
YourDreamGM
He isn’t going to any of those cities unless they do a crazy over pay. Pittsburgh and Oakland would be great if he is serious about playing for a contender because the second they aren’t a contender they will trade him to one.
YourDreamGM
I been to all of those cities. Definitely rather live in Denver or Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is on like every best cities to live in list. Colorado Springs makes a lot of list as well and isn’t that far from Denver. Oakland is surrounded by the rest of California so that’s a plus.

BlueSkies_LA
Sad, but true.
BlueSkies_LA
According to recent reporting, a ruling on his appeal of the suspension won’t be made any earlier than next month. The woman’s countersuit suit was allowed to proceed and Bauer’s defamation suit against her lawyer was dismissed. That’s pretty much everything new we’re going to know until next month at the soonest.

What a mess BlueSkies. I would want to have my hands washed of the whole ordeal as quickly as possible.
BlueSkies_LA
It can get a lot messier and probably will. He’s already sued just about everyone in sight. When his appeal fails, as I believe it will, he will file even more suits. He’s being egged on by some, including the lawyer who represented Roger Clemens when he was named in the Mitchell Report.

I think Hendriks buyout is wrong because it’s the same as the club option
hyraxwithaflamethrower
No, that’s right. The option pays that year, but the buyout is paid over several years. There’s little chance they don’t pick it up unless the wheels totally fall off.
Deere5800 2
I assumed it was wrong too, lol, but yeah, that’s an interesting contract structure.

Hope the Os lock up Means. He’s been hurt a lot and it seems like he might be more amicable to a reasonable contract to fit right into the middle of the rotation for 5 years. He’s not an ace but could make a stud #3
CHS O'sFan
I’m pretty sure Means is controlled through 2024. He signed a 2 year deal due to his injury in April, but that covered Arb 1 and Arb 2 seasons. He has his Arb 3 year next offseason.

I thought so too. Threw me off seeing him listed here

Thank You for the list of 2023-24 MLB FAs.
Hemlock
You’re welcome
titanic struggle
I’m indifferent on this subject to some extent, because I’m just a Reds fan, and we aren’t relevant at this point at all. I have one thing to say about Ohtani though. I just really hope for this guy not to suffer a serious injury. He’s been all world, but playing the way he does has to take a considerable toll on his body..
Jaysfan1981
Playing the way he does?
He pitches, every 6th day. Not 5th.
He’s not in the feild, he doesn’t run into the wall catching deep fly balls, he’s not throwing his body around diving trying to take hits away.
I don’t understand, is he made of glass?
Hemlock
> I don’t understand, is he made of glass?
Yes. His right arm is.
SteveM7
Ohtani becomes MLB’s first $1B player!
Hemlock
Negative.
Wilmer the Thrillmer
With Devers, Machado & Ohtani the only big names, overall it’s a very weak free agent class next offseason. No wonder there was such a wild scramble for the top free agents this month! (December 2022).
avenger65
Make that Devers. No way Ohtani is going anywhere and I doubt Machado will opt out of $150mm unless the Mets offer $250mm.
Little Stevie Janowsky
No way ohtani is wasting his time with a loser organization any longer. He’s as good as gone
YourDreamGM
Machado will opt out unless AJ over pays for him or something drastic happens. Majority of teams in baseball will pay him more than 150 million.
websoulsurfer
Nola and Urias will get big contracts too.
YourDreamGM
Nola will do good. Urias I am not so sure about. Might not be much of a market for him.
Snellzilla #7
Urias is a great pitcher. There’s no baseball related reason why he wouldn’t.
I wonder if that lady lied about him, the way the lady in the Trevor Bauer situation lied about Bauer?
Nate 16
C-d’Arnaud
1B-Hoskins
2B-Polanco
SS-Anderson
3B-Devers
LF-Canha
CF-Bellinger
RF-Hernandez
DH-Machado
websoulsurfer
Machado who plays exceptional defense at DH but Devers who is awful continues to play 3B?
Augusto Barojas
Other than Ohtani, Devers, and possibly Machado (I can’t believe he’ll opt out, we’ll see), this is a fugly list compared to the past couple of years. Nowhere near the number of top quality players.
YourDreamGM
Almost certain he opts out. Would have to be severely injured not to. Good chance they extend him though.
CHS O'sFan
Unless I’m missing something, Means shouldn’t be a FA until after the 2024 season. That 2024 pitching class should be fun.
eznod
Cardinals have 4 Starting Pitchers on this list…Hmmm.
geotheo
Means isn’t a free agent until after the 2024 season
In Seager/Hader We Trust > the 70 MM DH Ohtani
A few observations: very little offense
many big name pitchers who are old and some young ones too
some decent relievers
it seems there were way more FA this offseason than there will be next offseason (maybe some of these guys will sign 1 year contracts and non-tendered guys may increase this, but it still seems very light)
bravegator
Max fried??? Or did I miss it
YourDreamGM
Not a free agent until after 2024 season.
bravegator
Max fried??
Hemlock
Not a free agent until after 2024 season!!!
Datashark
Shohei Ohtani (29) 8 years 400M
Jaysfan1981
Probably 12 / 500
Snellzilla #7
Wow, can’t wait till next year, to see my Giants almost get Ohtani
bwmiller
It will be interesting to see how Ohtani plays this season in what is probably the most anticipated FA in the history of MLB.
Hemlock
I think he’ll probably with the AL MVP. And he will be the unanimous winner. But his right arm…caught in an escalator? No, injured pitching. He will not pitch in…2024 at least.
Snellzilla #7
He won the AL MVP unanimously
bwmiller
It will also be interesting to see how Rafael Devers hits without JD and Bogaerts in the lineup, thought Hosmer was due for a big year, still dont understand that one.
patricktroen
Ohtani will get 12 years 600 million and teams will lineup for it. Heck even that maybe too little. Whats the price of 75% age 40 jv + age 40 corner of at the tail end of contract? Abd of course ohtanis prime.
Also a contract yr of ohtani in 2023.
wurmie
I know he will likely retire, but you don’t have Miguel Cabrera on your DH or 1B list
charlesk
Kiermaier will be a free agent. His $9 million deal with Toronto is only for 2023.
LordD99
The comments are from nearly a year back. Probably should publish as a new post.
Gwynning
It’s always refreshing to me to see old friends like Clip commenting though! I miss chats with Ducky too
=(
YourDreamGM
I’m still here Gwynning. Don’t see the need for a new article. People will figure out one day why there are comments from 2022. New/updated who cares as long as they click on it!
Tim Dierkes
I’d rather not have a single free agent list floating around at two different URLs. This is more a reference post than a commenter discussion one, I’d say.
southi
I could see Atlanta targeting either Joc Pederson or Lourdes Gurriel, jr. to help in the outfield.
I could also see them going after one of either Sonny Gray, Jordan Montgomery, or even Aaron Nola and in addition signing yet another starting pitcher out of guys like Michael Wacha, Michael Lorenzen, Seth Lugo or even Sean Manea.
So an outfielder and two different starting pitchers (but not two from the top tier).
Snellzilla #7
Joc is trash
DeepDownSouth
Except for a small handful of these player, most of them are really just a hot mess. That being said some in the hot mess category is going to land on Chicago White Sox roster
BlueSkies_LA
The big news is, for the very first time, MLB features three free agent catchers named Austin.
baseballteam
That’s Austin power.
Boazona
Hopefully no one puts Kyle Lewis in CF.
Jack Dawkins
The Dodgers have removed Urias’ locker from the clubhouse, scrubbed his image in a mural on the stadium walls, and the manager said he isn’t coming back. The LA district attorney office has a year to file charges if it wants to. MLB will undoubtedly suspend him for a season or 2 even if there are no criminal charges. Nobody is signing him for the foreseeable future. Not even for pennies on the dollar.
BlueSkies_LA
Trying to picture them removing the locker as opposed to assigning it to someone else. Sledgehammer party, anybody?
As always MLB cannot investigate violations of the domestic violence policy until any criminal investigation is completed. Charging and the MLB investigation are effectively mutually exclusive propositions. If a player is charged with a crime, the MLB investigation is mooted because the commissioner would have grounds to place the player on either the ineligible or restricted list. As you say this could be a very long process but we shouldn’t prejudge the outcome as we don’t know any more about the specifics of the situation than we are entitled to know, which is basically nothing.
Snellzilla #7
If they had a strong case, they would have filed charges already. I’m beginning to suspect false allegations, like in the Trevor Bauer situation
drdback
I think the winner of the Ohtani sweepstakes could wind up getting burned with a half billion dollar contract or more. No doubt he is a great slugger, but what happens when pitchers start throwing him inside toward his rehabilitating right next season? Additionally, there’s no guarantee he will be the same pitcher he was in 2025 after having a second TJ surgery. Buyer beware.
Jack Dawkins
I didn’t like the optics when the locker replacement happened. It looked like the beginning of the end for Julio in LA at the very least. From my own troubles with the law in Los Angeles specifically, I can tell you that the DA’s office doesn’t have to file right away. It can file right up until whatever the statute of limitations is. Then of course MLB gets to do their own investigation. Without even judging guilt or innocence, add this all up and I don’t like his chances of getting tendered a contract from any league anytime soon.
BlueSkies_LA
Sure, but my point is, if criminal charges are filed against a player, an MLB investigation won’t be required. MLB only investigates if charges aren’t filed. This is something most of the reporting gets wrong. They usually say MLB can suspend a player under the policy “even if no charges are filed,” when they should say MLB can suspend a player under the policy “only if no charges are filed.” Because that’s how it really works. The situation with Urias is a little unusual in that he’s not under contract to any team now, and for sure no team would touch him even if they could. If he isn’t charged with a crime he’s young enough to potentially make a comeback, but I’m afraid he’s run himself right out of a career. So sad, but he’s got nobody to blame but himself.
Jack Dawkins
It is sad, I agree. My point is that there is so much time that is going to be consumed to reach unpredictable outcomes that it is not a good business decision to tender an offer to Urias at this time. After every thing shakes out, it then becomes another matter depending on the unpredictable outcomes. In the meantime, I think the Dodgers need a veteran ace. I don’t care if it’s free agents or trades. If they really expect to compete better in the post season next year, then we need an ace. I like Buehler but you’re only hoping that he can pick up where he left off.
BlueSkies_LA
Urias is on administrative leave so I don’t think he can be signed even if a team wanted to take that risk.
Yep, top of the rotation has to be the priority. Burnes for Pepiot? I know some will say that’s a lopsided trade but it is one year of Burnes for six (I believe) of Pepiot.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Why do a handful of comments say 2022? The article was written on Nov. 18th 2023?
Roll
because if they update the wording it updates the “written on” date .. this was there during the i think 2021/2022 offseason and they just update as they go.
rond-2
Catching is thin, however Knizner would be a good addition for a club. Maybe at 2yr/4mil.
rememberthecoop
Interesting that Ohtani isn’t listed as a pitcher. I know he won’t pitch in 24, but technically, he is also a starting pitcher.
towinagain
Padres PLEASE, PLEAESE, SIGN A FEW free agents.
In nurse follars
A lot of roster fillers who need to retire, step aside, go away with grace and make room for younger players. I dont think baseball will notice if most of these guys are gone. Of course with teo née expansions expected some of these guys will find jobs simply for name recognition.
DarrenDreifortsContract
I’m surprised Grandal is already 35 years old. It doesn’t feel like he’s been around that long.
Slider_withcheese
It’s funny reading all these comments and seeing how wrong everyone was.
Roll
im curious what qualifies people to be in multiple positions. like justin turner played more 1b than 3b last season but is listed as a 3b and not 1b.
C Yards Jeff
Adam Frazier played some outfield.
Roll
yup and IKF did not even play a full game at SS last year but is listed as a SS only.
dramsey10
So…is Trevor Bauer not a free agent?
Didn’t see him on the list.
OCTraveler
With enough money, you could easily sign a 26 man expansion team roster that would be competitive and possibly win either the AL or NL Central Divisions
dano62
MLB really screwed this up; FA time use to be when every fan could look forward to their team signing a few nice players to complement the off-season dream. Now the players plot together & the same old organizations get Uber rich & sign stars to decade-long deals, pricing fans out in the process. If MLB refuses to implement a hard cap (& cap floor) w/ reasonable term limit on contracts (like 6 or 7 years max), they need to create an international draft, but where teams can trade the picks…
Motor City Beach Bum
Last minute Christmas shopping anyone?
The Virus
Would love to field a team from this list and see how they do!
ArianaGrandSlam
I see no Luke Voit. Why?
rond-2
Pirates should give Clevinger a call.
Rounding3rd
Jake Odorizzi gets an asterisk! Only player in the entire list that gets a star!
eznod
Over/Under 50 of these players won’t be in the Major Leagues.
NickEsasky
You forgot to include free agent (and recent NL CY Young winner) Trevor Bauer.
