The Blue Jays have made another big strike in free agency, signing right-hander Kevin Gausman to a five-year, $110MM deal. As per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi (Twitter link), Gausman will earn $21MM in each of the next two seasons, $22MM in 2024, and $23MM in 2025 and 2026. Gausman is represented by Tidal Sports.
The signing represents the end of a rather lengthy courtship, as the Blue Jays’ interest in Gausman dates back to at least the 2019-20 offseason, when the right-hander was coming off a rough season split between the Braves and Reds. After being non-tendered by Cincinnati, Gausman instead opted to sign with the Giants on a one-year, $9MM deal, and after a very successful 2020 season, he chose to accept the Giants’ $18.9MM qualifying offer to return to San Francisco. The Jays were one of the teams who floated a multi-year offer Gausman’s way, but he turned down the Jays’ reported three-year offer in the $40MM range to instead try and further bolster his value with another strong year with the Giants.
Over two years in San Francisco, Gausman not only bounced back from his tough 2019 numbers, but hit a new plateau of success. Gausman posted a 3.00 ERA/3.38 SIERA over his 251 2/3 innings as a Giant, with an excellent 30% strikeout rate and a solidly above-average 6.5% walk rate.
While Gausman pitched well over 59 2/3 innings in the shortened 2020 season, he duplicated his performance over a full year in 2021, tossing 192 frames and finishing sixth in NL Cy Young Award voting. One notable wrinkle between the two years was that Gausman increased the use of his split-finger fastball to a career-high 36.6% in 2021, and Gausman’s splitter became one of the more devastating pitches in any arsenal in baseball.
The 192 innings marked a new career high for Gausman, though he was a solid workhorse while averaging 183 IP per year from 2016-18 with the Orioles and Braves. It is worth noting that Gausman was much better in the first half (1.73 ERA in 114 2/3 IP) than he was after the All-Star break (4.42 ERA over 77 1/3 IP) last year, yet some regression might have been inevitable given that gaudy 1.73 number. Gausman was also dealing with hip soreness for much of the year, and it could be that he simply started to wear down as many starters did while getting back to a regular workload following the shorter 2020 season.
The Blue Jays got plenty of looks at Gausman during his Orioles days, but while Gausman was a decent but unspectacular member of Baltimore’s rotation, he will now be expected to replicate his front-of-the-rotation numbers from 2020-21. Toronto has been focusing on the pitching market for much of the winter, and in landing Gausman, it is possible the club has now its replacement for Robbie Ray, should Ray sign elsewhere in free agency.
MLBTR ranked Gausman fifth on our list of the winter’s top 50 free agents, and his contract falls a bit shy of our six-year, $138MM projection. However, it appears as though Gausman did leave some money on the table to join the Blue Jays, as SNY’s Andy Martino tweets that the Mets offered Gausman a larger deal than Toronto’s five years and $110MM. The Giants were also known to be making a solid push to retain Gausman, while the Angels, Mariners, and Red Sox all had some degree of interest. Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports that the Sox didn’t offer “anything real” to Gausman during their negotiations.
Gausman (who turns 31 in January) joins Jose Berrios, Hyun Jin Ryu, and Alek Manoah as the four locks in the Jays rotation, with former top prospect Nate Pearson favored for the fifth spot, and Ross Stripling and Anthony Kay on hand if Pearson struggles or runs into more injury problems. Between Gausman’s deal, Berrios’ seven-year/$131MM extension, Ryu signed for two more seasons, and Manoah and Pearson providing lower-cost control as the starters of the future, Toronto has built a solid core of arms that the club hopes can withstand the stiff competition of the AL East.
The Gausman signing could also close the door on the chances of Ray re-signing with the Jays, and Toronto has also lost another starter in Steven Matz, who signed a four-year pact with the Cardinals. It seems possible that the Blue Jays might yet seek out another lower-cost depth arm to compete with Pearson and company, perhaps looking to strike big on another bounce-back candidate as they did with Ray and Matz last winter.
Since Gausman had already been issued a qualifying offer in his career, he was ineligible to receive another one this time around in free agency, meaning the Blue Jays don’t have to give up any draft picks as compensation for his services. The Jays have already landed one compensatory pick when Marcus Semien signed with the Rangers, and would receive another if Ray signed elsewhere since both Ray and Semien rejected Toronto’s qualifying offers. With this extra draft capital on hand, the Blue Jays might be more open to now signing a QO free agent of their own, as they were able to land their sought-after rotation upgrade in Gausman without the cost of any picks.
ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (via Twitter) reported that the Jays and Gausman had reached an agreement. MLB Network’s Jon Morosi tweeted earlier in the day that the two sides were “gaining momentum towards a deal,” and Morosi’s earlier reports suggested that Gausman would land a five-year deal in the $100MM range, with the Jays as a finalist for the right-hander’s services.

Eppler gonna Eppler. Allergic to pitching
candymaldonado
Allergic? They made an offer by all accounts and it wasn’t taken. So did several other teams. What else is he supposed to do? Besides, Eppler brought in Ohtani to Anaheim. Not his fault Moreno turned into a penny pincher during rotation upgrade time.
VonPurpleHayes
I think the Mets will now give Scherzer a ridiculous offer. 46 AAV for 3 years or something like that. Scherzer will be good for 1 year and then suffer a career-ending injury. Mets payroll will be over the 300 mark for the next 3 years. They’ll be a great team for 3-4 years with some deep playoff runs, and then be forced to rebuild.
Or, more likely, none of what I just said will happen. Who knows?
phenomenalajs
I think they’re going all in on Scherzer with $40M+ AAV.
NYMetsFanatic
For his own personal reasons, I don’t think Scherzer will sign with the Mets. And maybe it’s just as well. I just hope they grab two quality starters elsewhere before it’s too late. Maybe they acquire them via trades. There’s always the mid-season trade deadline to consider, as well.
carllafong
That’s not what happened with Eppler. he had six years to upgrade the pitching and their minor league system– he did neither. Moreno spends big money every year. Eppler did not manage the money or team properly. The Angels were in on Gerrit Cole, Patrick Corbin, Wheeler, and others.
VonPurpleHayes
I actually think the Mets will be better with 2 quality starters than 1 Scherzer.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@VonPurpleHayes- I doubt anything you said would happen. If having Scherzer gets the Mets, Dodgers, or Giants to the playoffs all of those 3 years and helps them win a World Series then the $46 million a year was well worth it for any of those teams.
all in the suit that you wear
I doubt Scherzer can pitch a full season and the playoffs after he couldn’t answer the bell in the NLCS last year.
Yep it is

One less landing spot for Stroman. Berrios and Gausman both on the Jays. Yankees better respond.
bigdaddyt
Don’t think this takes jays out of the stroman race. Say they give stro 90ish over 5 years jays would have a rotation next year of Barrios, Gausman, Ryu, Manoha and Stroman. Would be deadly and allow Pearson to be the fire man.

I’m pretty sure the Blue Jays are not in the Stroman race.

All you have to do is read Stroman’s Twitter feed. It’s really not that hard to read between the lines.
garyeave
The Jays talk big about culture etc. Stroman wasn’t a good fit for them. When he left not one of his teammates said a nice thing about him on social media so don’t think they are pursuing him.
Best Screenname Ever
I don’t think there were any” rancorous” statements by the Blue Jays at all. Stroman though was something different, He burned a lot of bridges shooting off his mouth and I doubt anyone in the clubhouse who watched his temper tantrum ‘me me me me’ exit wants him back. Nor did his twitter game help him when his ‘trainer’ left shortly after with some issues with Aaron Sanchez. It’s too bad because in many ways he came to Toronto as a nice kid.

Lol best team in the league this year? Really?
mikeshaw801
Wasn’t the best team in the league this year Atlanta?
smuzqwpdmx
The Braves were the best team in October, the Giants were the best team for the year.
Pete'sView
No.
48-team MLB
LOL Braves fans have constantly been told how the regular season means nothing and that World Series titles are all that matter.
Also, Atlanta had a starting outfield of Abraham Almonte, Guillermo Heredia and Orlando Arcia for several weeks in the middle of the season…not to mention that they were using some combination of Kevan Smith, Jonathan Lucroy, Alex Jackson, Jeff Mathis and Stephen Vogt behind the plate for three months…and yet they still won the World Series.
Pete'sView
Other teams had more—and more significant—injuries than the Braves (Dodgers, Giants and a number of others). Not taking away from Atlanta’s WS Championship, but they got hot at the right time and by adding their most important players (excluding the incumbents Riley and Freeman). The Braves are not the best team in baseball, and may not even be in the top 5.
48-team MLB
The Braves have won their division every year since 2018. People act like they just came out of nowhere. They were only below .500 because of injuries. Sure, the Mets, Phillies and Angels had injuries but those teams never reach the postseason in recent years anyway. The Braves have proven over the last four years that they are a legitimate contender. It’s not always your best team on paper that wins a title. That’s why you have to keep giving your team chances.
Look at the 2004-2006 Cardinals for example…
2004: 105 wins, lost World Series
2005: 100 wins, lost NLCS
2006: 83 wins, won World Series
Also, look at the 2011-2015 Cardinals.
2011: 90 wins, won World Series
2013: 96 wins, lost World Series
2015: 100 wins, lost NLDS
I don’t remember their records from 2012 and 2014 but I’m sure they were probably better than their 2011 record. Maybe the Braves only won 88 games this year but they won 97 in 2019, which was the last full season before this season. Things even out.
48-team MLB
Anyway, you’re literally ignoring the fact that the Braves were missing HALF of their starting eight for months. They made big upgrades to the outfield at the deadline and they got d’Arnaud back from injury in August. They went from 52-55 to 88-73. They also overcame Soler getting Covid and Morton breaking his ankle in the postseason.
sf2win
It’s hard to fathom the number of wins the Giants or Dodgers would have had this year if they swapped divisions with the Braves. 120? Is 130 even possible?
Jcool90
Don’t mets ever learn? You could give everyone who comment mets 1 mill and a 4 game kinda roll that includes a start.
davidk1979
Makes no sense
rct
Like, how? Because they didn’t give Gausman this huge deal? He has one great season, at age 30, two or three solid seasons, and the rest are average or below average. I’m a Mets fan but I’m 100% fine with not signing Gausman.
Kayrall
Today has been spicy.
Tacoshells
Oh dang. Nice !! I think this is very good for both player and team.
Nothing
Absolutely. Jays have a terrific rotation, and Gausman should have some great playoff opportunities. So pumped! GO JAYS GO!
carllafong
You mean they have a great rotation if the keep Robbie Ray. in fact, the signing of Gausman may signal they know they can’t resign Ray and are acting fast to replace him. They lost Semien which really hurts that offense, but they can’t afford to lose Ray as well and not replace him.
Nothing
Gausman, Berrios, Manoah, Ryu, Stripling. That’s easily a top rotation in the AL. They don’t need Ray at this point, unless his price falls and they decide to swoop in. The offence will be fine with Vlad, Bo, Springer and Hernandez leading the charge. Add another decent INF (Kyle Seager?) and the jays are best in the east by a mile.
Poppin' Balls
I love this guy’s optimism! Generally speaking, not just currently. Let us savour the moment.
OilCanLloyd
Change Stripling to Pearson and that is a formidable five. I too am not worried about the offense.

johnny53811
We’re gonna miss him in SF
Baseball 1600
For sure. I think people are wrong about him being a fluke, yes he had a very rocky July/August but towards the end of September he regained his splitter and was dominant again just like in April-June. I think Jays are going to be getting a very very good SP, maybe not a bona-fide ace but a good #2.
bigdaddyt
That’s literally their entire rotation not a bonafide ace in the bunch but currently 4 very good #2 type guys (depending on if Ryu can bounce back)
differentbears
Ryu is an ace, at least he was in his last couple years with the Dodgers.
Pete'sView
And so much for loyalty. Gausman was nothing more than a journeyman until the Giants coaching staff fixed him. I can’t believe that the Giants didn’t offer him close to the same $$ deal (but perhaps one less year),
Now I’ll definitely have to root against him.
statman
Lotta cash for a 30 year old 2-pitch pitcher … not sure this is going to look good after year 2
User 1104686089
I probably would have said this exact comment a few years ago. Then I watched Lance Lynn do very mean things to guys in Texas for a couple of years. It really depends on the 2 pitches and the ability to locate those pitches I guess.
seamaholic 2
30 is nothing for pitchers. It’s the repertoire that I’d worry about. All those splitters are gonna catch up with him at some point. Expect extensive IL time. Didn’t the Jays just try this with another mid-career splitter guy, Kirby Yates? That went well.
Samuel
@ seamaholic 2;
Yates was coming off surgery when they got him.
Do you have his medical records? Gausman’s?
charlesk
That’s what Ray is, two pitches. Slider, fastball and he won the Cy Young pitching in Toronto.
Scott_11
Yes but sooner or later hitters will catch on. Especially teams in the AL east when you play them 20 times.
Samuel
@ Scott_11;
Mariano Rivera threw one pitch.
He pitched in the AL East for 19 years.
He did OK.
Joseph Gonzalez
Rivera actually used a 2 seamer in the later parts of his career with his cutter
48-team MLB
Rivera didn’t pitch more than an inning or two at a time. That’s the difference.
bucsfan0004
The Jays must know Ray is going to get the moon from someone. Gausman is a fine replacement
Mystery Team
Is he though? I’m not so sure two good years warrants this type of deal. I’m seeing team after team over pay for unproven players. Gausman has had many more horrible seasons than good ones. To me he’s not worth the amount of dollars or years. We can laugh at the Mets all we want and believe me I do but I bet we’re laughing at Toronto after we see him pitch in the bat loaded AL East once again.
Edp007
My thoughts too. Probably offered Ray similar and Ray said Arte is offering way more or such so they went after Gausman.
bucsfan0004
How many good years has Ray had recently? Its basically taking the same chance.
OilCanLloyd
“Bat loaded AL East” is right. Like Springer, Bichette, Guerrero and Hernandez.

Especially in the AL East. Might be great this year but guys will catch on.

The Padres already have their two big-ticket items in Tatis and Machado. There’s no reason for them to make some of these mistakes other teams are making.
Samuel
@ Cey Hey;
I’m telling you – the O’Malley relative that’s their new majority owner reined Preller in. If you saw the O’Malley’s run the Dodgers what the Padres are restructuring to should be familiar. They’re currently cleaning up the excesses.
Trust that Preller will no longer be showing up on the field during practice and overruling the manager on what drills the players are doing.

Eric P
one thing that interests me in the last few days frenzy of signings is that most analysts were predicting that the Gs would be one of the most attractive options for FAs coming off the 107 win season, the coaching staff, organizational culture, ballpark, etc. Of course Z has to remain competitive in his bids, but right now it seems like SF is not holding any special allure for FAs.
theodore glass
He got less than 150 million. Interesting what a good deal for the Blue Jays.
BrianBrian
Why couldn’t they spend this on Ray
ajrodz1335
Although Ray just won the CY Young, I’d rather have Gausman
smuzqwpdmx
Ray has the slightly higher ceiling (which he just hit), but think Gausman is less risky. He’s only had one particularly bad year, outside of 2019 he’s been at least averageish, and he’s had two good years in a row. Whereas Ray has had two bad years, and the worst of them was more recent.
whogg72
Because Ray would be about 28ish/year.

Cause Ray would laugh at that he’s gettting 6 years at 165 or so I’d imagine

I’ll take my guys easily. Start with the Brewers, Rays, Guardians, Astros, Dodgers, Giants…and others. Might start following the Jays this year…..
Jays, Red Sox, Rays – all getting better. Yankees veteran players hit a wall 2 years ago. I don’t think you comprehend the situation.
Told your buddie a while ago – look what happened to the powerful Yankees when MLB instituted a drafting system for young players in the late-50’s – early 60’s. Took a few years and the Yankees fell apart. George came by and when FA came in he outspent everyone. It took almost 20 years, but slowly the field has been leveled.

VonPurpleHayes
Why? Gausman is better than 4 of the 5 projected Mets starting pitchers, and money is apparently no issue for Cohen.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
@ Joseph
While I do think the deal is a bit risky for a guy with Gausman’s track record, the Mets also can’t afford to be that picky given the options on the table and the sorry state of their rotation (as I’m typing this, Gray signed as well, taking another option off the table). They have money to burn and seem consumed by this fool’s errand for Scherzer to the exclusion of other possibilities. Two of the better fallback options going off the market without any indication of a serious offer from the Mets is a bad look.
rct
Because it’s a ton of money for a guy with a spotty track record and only one great season? I’m fine with not signing him. If they hadn’t spent way too much on Lindor, then maybe I could see laying out this much for Gausman. But where their payroll is right now it makes no sense to spend this much.
jeffblauser

Gausman only lasted 14 innings during the regular season against the Dodgers. Then in the playoff series Game 2, the Dodgers lit him up and won 9-2. AL East with the Rays, Yanks, and Bosox will not be intimidated by him.

According to informed sources, The Marlins were in on Kevin Gausman right up until he signed the deal to join the Blue Jays.. The Marlins made a “strong” offer, but not one that matched the Blue Jays’ financial commitment. The Marlins weren’t the only team to be outbid.

Gausman is going to get cooked in the AL East. Bad decision by the Blue Jays to go with him over Ray. As a Yankee fan this pleases me
analyzer87
He played in the al east before. Pitched well too on a worse team.
Ronk325
Gausman’s numbers with the Orioles were in line with a No. 4 SP and the division wasn’t as competitive in that timeframe. He’s being paid like a No. 2 and I don’t think he’s going to deliver
smuzqwpdmx
Gausman’s ERA+ was over 100 over his Orioles career. That makes him by definition a #2 starter (100 = average = 2.5, slightly better than 100 rounds to 2). If that’s his floor, the contract won’t hurt.
Ronk325
If you actually believe Gausman was a No. 2 with the Orioles then you are beyond clueless and should find a new sport
JoeBrady
It makes him exactly a #3. He had an ERA+ of 100. That makes the #1 & #2 better and the #4 & #5 worse. To call him a #2 means he is in the top 40%.
PinstripedPride
Judge absolutely owns him, if you look at career at bats vs. a pitcher. I hesitate to tip my hat to a pitcher who’s only just found things out. They definitely are prone to regress, so I will wait to see how he performs this coming year
Samuel
@ PinstripedPride;

Yes sir! Especially for that money/years. But congratulations to the Blue Jays! They got a top-tier SP, man. Their fans should be excited. I, however did not see him going to Toronto. I thought it was SF for sure.
Now we shall see if going back to the ALE will result in exposing his 1st half of ‘21 as a fluke, or if he will be dominant regardless of which division.
Poppin' Balls
In Pete Walker we trust
Eric P
apparently the Gs and Js were the finalists for Gausman, so I agree with you that they certainly did not pass on him. I assume that his second half last year caused some concern about his long term durability. It will be interesting to see if Z gives out any 4 year contracts this year, let alone 5
giant4life
Farhan being Farhan. He could have signed this guy for 2 years 30 mil at the beginning of last year but chose to give him a QO. Now the options are scarce and he still has 3 spots in the rotation to fill. It isn’t rocket science signitfree agents
Orel Saxhiser
Farhan is one of the best in the business. In case you haven’t noticed, the better teams have been laying low so far. A reason the good teams are good is that they don’t make mistakes out of desperation. Braves, Dodgers, Rays. And I’ll put the Red Sox (Tampa Bay connection) and Giants in there as well. The Mets win the off-season every year, only to wind up 77-85 when it counts.
Samuel
Actually, Brewers top the list on patience.
fox471 Dave
CeyHey- yep!
TommyLasutton
This is getting interesting. I don’t think Scherzer will want to play in the Nats division… Dodgers gonna be reactionary to the Giants and overpay on Scherzer (same way they overpaid on Bauer fearing the Mets). And we’ll have to send Bauer half-priced to a team like the Angels (because Manfred is weak and will only slap him on the wrist; Trevor will pitch in ‘22).
Softball Mike
Trevor will never pitch in the bigs again. Poison.
Orel Saxhiser
Bauer mistake aside, Andrew Friedman is as good as it gets in a Major League front office. He is not going to be reactionary. Come opening day, the Dodgers will be just fine.
Also, why would playing in the Nats’ division affect Scherzer’s decision? He’s in it for the most money he can get.
Samuel
His signings of Bauer and others were too much for me. Thought he had more sense. And it’s not just because of Bauer’s off-field issues.
Rizzo got a real good Catcher out of him – and I know Friedman didn’t want to part with the guy.
Orel Saxhiser
@Samuel, Uncharacteristic of Friedman. Winning a World Series and then making an outsider the highest-paid guy on the 2021 team made no sense. There’s more to that signing than AF doing it on his own. And you’re absolutely right re Ruiz. The Dodgers parted with a player they absolutely would have kept if it was AF’s call. Making another mistake in a bid to make up for the first one.
What do you think happens next? It’s starting to feel like they’re going to sign Seager. Not sure how I feel about that, but if it happens, I feel they will trade Trea Turner to fill another need.
Samuel
I know they still like Seager, If his price is reasonable they may well sign him and trade Trea as you suggest.
Nevertheless. Friedman has to get back to his ways of finding players who are either changing their game or finding guys that Dodger coaches can change.
There was a nice book out that I read a few years ago about Friedman hearing about the other Turner working on his hitting in an industrial park facility in the Valley during the winter. There were a few former coaches and some techies using extensive equipment reworking his swing and approach. Friedman heard of what he was doing and left his desk to drive over. He started negotiations and that’s how he got Justin Turner. He needs to get back to doing more of that and forget overpaying established players. Hungry players wanting to prove themselves beats guys with long-term contracts.
Orel Saxhiser
Go read MLB’s Domestic Abuse Policy in its entirety. It’s not up to Manfred to punish Bauer right off the bat.
Larry Bernandez 1324IM
Gausman’s going to have ptsd everytime he pitches in Camden
bucsfan0004
Take a look at that O’s lineup and think again.
Yadi Dadi
The Mets made a big bunch of noise, signifying nothing.3rd place ahead
Aoe3
Losing Semiem was tough but id prefer Toronto not pay him that huge contract. So happy they got Gausman!!! I thought SF for sure, they got outbid by canadians pathetic.
Cyberhawk79
Nice to see. Go Jays go!!
big boi
Maybe a bit costly but the jays needed at very least 1 solid pitcher…
1-Berrios
2-Ryu
3-Gausman
4-Manoah
5-Stripling/Pearson
Not bad
Larry Bernandez 1324IM
Still finish behind the Rays, Red Sox, and Yankees next season.
Shoguneye
…on whose first out on the links…
RobM
Losing Ray and Matz is significant, but they can counterbalance that with a full year of Berrios, a full season from Manoah and now adding in Gausman. Wouldn’t be surprised if Ryu has a slight bounce-back season too.
They need to ensure the bullpen is in good shape. The AL East is always a brutal division. It’s the complete pitching staff that wins it, not just the starters.
mlbnyyfan
Can someone check on Cashman. I think he may be in a ditch somewhere because he’s done nothing so far. Cashman is MIA!!!
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@mlbnyyfan- yeah Ca$hman is always incognito! Maybe he is all stuffed from his Thanksgiving dinner? It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Yankees make a late run for Scherzer or Ray now. I think a trade for Luis Castillo is still possible if they trade Gleyber Torres or Oswald Peraza in a package. Castillo is more of a need for the Yankees then Greg Olson. No reason why Rizzo can’t be resigned for 2 more seasons. He already said he wants to return.
OilCanLloyd
I hope the yanks do overpay for Ray. Jays will take your conditional pick and watch his regression. Beautiful!
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@1 Goose Man- I would pass on Ray. It’s definitely interesting to see what the Yankees will do. My preference obviously is to trade for Luis Castillo, expecting a bounce back year from him.
crshbng
Not a terrible contract in a hot pitcher market. No QO is a bonus too. Jays starting staff getting deeper.
Camden453
Smart move on Gausman’s part
Ah Sahm
Comp picks for Semien and Ray (once Ray signs). Signed Gausman and took a pretty low risk gamble on a reliever with some upside. Blue Jays have had a solid offseason
bucsfan0004
Any Jays fan should be rooting for Ray to go to the Mets. Get that #14 comp pick
Camden453
Gausman would have been eaten alive in NY anyway
GETBUCKETS
Nice signing.
If I were a Jays fan I’d rather sign gausman instead of resigning Ray off a career year after tons of inconsistency.
rct
Gausman literally just had a career year after tons of inconsistency, though.
Central Valley
2022, Opening day pitcher for the San Francisco Giants? Logan Webb? Max Scherzer?
I want to take my daughter, maybe buy her a jersey.
Dustyslambchops23
The key to this is that they use the difference of what it would have cost for Ray (50-75 mil) to improve their infield and bullpen.
Would also like them to still add another starter, obviously not another big contract but look for another high risk high reward 1 year deal to create some depth.
to4
I was afraid of this m. I really hope my Jays get the Giants version of Gausman. He was destroyed while in the AL East with the O’s ! and for GE price tag he came with, better be good. Just not sure why they haven’t signed Ray if they’re willing to go that high for a pitcher !
canajay12
As warren Buffett once said “it’s better to buy a great pitcher at a fair price, than to buy a fair pitcher at a great price.”
Or something.
Orel Saxhiser
And by Thursday, neither side will trust the other and will be hurling expletive-laced barbs back-and-forth.
bucsfan0004
Isn’t Warren Buffet the reason there’s no keystone pipeline? I know thats a big deal to most Canadians. Because the owns the railroads.
bucsfan0004

$40+M annual Avv got Max ? Mets are really hungry for this guy. Ni INE seems to be thinking about a Kershaw bounce back and can actually be a bargain. I wonder if the Jays would gamble on him like they did with Ryu !
Melondough1
According to Andy Marino The Mets offered more than 5/$110 and he accept Toronto. Good teams attract great players. WOW!
Orel Saxhiser
Great player? Him?
Melondough1
Ok Fantastic player?
Orel Saxhiser
Fantastic? Ewwww. We’ll revisit this in August when Jays fans are already cursing the waste of money.
Samuel
@ Cey Hey;
I think he’ll be fine this year. My issue the other day was people saying he would get a 7 year contract.
It would be something if he gave the Jays 5 good years. I expect 2, maybe 3. But as I explained on another thread – MLB players in a way are Fixed Assets. And with all the money printing the US Dollar is worth less and less – it costs more to buy the same things. Robotics, AI and other technologies can cut costs in making many products to offset the higher costs. But again – players are Fixed Assets. The money these guys on long-term contracts will be getting in the coming years will be quite reasonable.
Orel Saxhiser
@Samuel, If my team was serious about contending, I’d rather they trade for Castillo’s last two years of arb than dole out a long-term deal for the SPs getting these big deals.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
@Cey Hey- I agree with you. I would rather my team trade for Luis Castillo then sign any of these free agent pitchers. The Blue Jays will regret signing Gausman for 5 years at $22 million annually. I think he will get hit hard pitching in the AL East. Gausman could be good for the next few years, but not for 5 years. Resigning Ray or trading for Castillo would have been a better move for Toronto.
Dustyslambchops23
It’s really interesting that a die hard fan of team with the biggest payroll in mlb history is being so critical of largish contracts.
Last year the Dodgers paid Bauer and Price over 50 million and won 106 games. The reality is when a team creates a solid base of controllable young stars, which the Jays have clearly done, they can fill some holes with FAs like Springer and Gausman.
Do you expect to get full value in the free agency market? Of course not, that’s not how the system is designed. But the goal is not to have the best value team, it’s to have as many good players performing within a given year.
OilCanLloyd
Toronto can get Castillo too. That just cost prospect capital. Which the Jays have. Especially when they got two conditional draft picks coming their way to stock the shelves. Same way they got Berrios.
Rsox
That may be overselling Gausman a bit but your point is correct. The public search and consequent public rejections for a PoBO, coupled with Cohen’s public crying over Steven Matz’ agent, plus Syndergaard and now Stroman speaking out a bit and no Manager or even any mention of possible candidates is going to scare some players away. The Mets did fine adding Marte/Canha/Escobar but they overpaid for all three
Eric P
based on that logic he would have returned to the Gs, the team that unlocked his full potential, a team he loves, a great ballpark. I bet that the Gs offered 4 plus a 5th team option. He went for the guarantee — and probably did not want to pitch in NY or was concerned about all of the Ms off season drama
jvent
F -ing Mets, wasting time now they better at least resign Stroman and maybe Gray or Ray.
Rsox
Good for Gausman but I’m glad it’s not the Red Sox.
Yankee-4-Lifer 75
Yeah so glad the Yankees didn’t sign Gausman, especially for 5 years. $22 million annually is way too much.
TalkSomeSense
Yankee
Did you think Gausman would sign for 3-45m? Seriously . The envy from the Sox and Yankees fans is enjoyable to see. If either had signed him to this deal you and Rsox would be thumping your chests about what a great deal it is.
FOmeOLS
This is what the Rangers should have done. It is also what the Mariners should have done.
Congratulations to the Jays for doing it. They were my choice to win the division several days ago, and that choice has gotten stronger today.
As an oriole fan, I of course hate them with a blazing passion, but I can live with them Over Satan’s children in New York or Boston.
Well done, fellows!
LGM1979
Lol Mets? I know they wanted him, but bullet dodged as far as I’m concerned. Too much money for a historicaly mediocre pitcher. More like lol Blue Jays.
pstef123
Lots of money. This is great news for Scherzer and Ray.
Happyfoolsteve
Glad to see Gausman reach his potential and do well. As an Orioles fan, I was bummed when he got traded, but I think it did him good to get out of Baltimore. He seems like a good guy too. I remember him paying tribute to Roy Halladay by switching to #34 after Halladay passed away. He should fit in well and hopefully will continue to succeed.
NY_Yankee
I remember Gausman in Baltimore, and the Yankees killed him. I know Camden is a bandbox but still not good. Do not forget Jays still lost Matz, Semien and probably Ray. They look weaker
TheRickestRick
Yeah
But everything sucks in Baltimore.
OilCanLloyd
Full year of Manoah, Berrios and Gausman. Weaker?
TalkSomeSense
1- Full yr from Berrios , Manoah, Springer.
2-Better pen then the dark days of May
June last year.
3-. A healthy Biggio, Merryweather, Borucki, Pearson.
4- Moreno on the doorstep.
5- Playing at home for the full year.
Best hope your Yanks boost spending to 260-280 to compete .
all in the suit that you wear
How did Gausman get so good after leaving Baltimore? What changed?
NY_Yankee
The Orioles have sucked for years plus Camden is bad for pitchers.
Samuel
The Giants coaching staff reworked him. Same as they did other pitchers.
GutsandBrains
Guess this means no Robbie ray
charlesk
Of course, the Jays could’ve just signed Stroman to a 5 year/$100 million extension instead of trading him at the July 2019 trade deadline with 1.5 years left of team control at that point. Wouldn’t it be crazy if they righted that wrong this week before the CBA expiry?
HBan22
They turned Stroman (and Martin) into Berrios, though. Give me Berrios at 7 years, $131 million over Stroman at 5 years, 100+ million any day.
yick04
Yes, it would be crazy.
shane
It’s been reported (if you believe them) that the Jays front office want nothing to do with Stroman. So much so that they won’t even have a conversation with his agent. They don’t want him. I’m not sure Gausman will be a better option. But still. It is what it is. Get over it.
TalkSomeSense
Charlie stop and think before you write.
jints1
As a Giants fan, I’m disappointed. As also a Gausman fan from both his days as an Oriole and a Giant, I think he made a bad move. He knows the AL East and should realize it’s not favorable to pitchers. Tough ballparks. He’s going to miss Oracle. The NL East would have also been better.
Philos
I’m worried about Mark. Too much action today. And to think he still is going to do a chat
NY_Yankee
It will be interesting to see where Ray ends up? The Mets make a lot of sense ( especially because they are desperate for pitching). Do not count out the Angels or Boston either.
HBan22
Apparently Ray hasn’t been at the top of the Mets list, but if they lose out on Scherzer in addition to Gausman, I could see them getting more interested very quickly.
skrockij89
Seattle gonna go after Stroman now?
AllinTX
The Rangers are signing him. 6/$120M
Edp007
Just got a Facebook notification from the Official Jays page . “Happy Chanukah Blue Jays fans” 🙂
JoeBrady
Ranked #39 in fWAR from 2017-2020. Injury-prone and 31 years old. 6 years?
Sadler
Pretty good contract for a guy whose mid-season decline began right when the sticky stuff crackdown happened.
Samuel
Not true.
Read post from yesterday breaking down when that happened and his performance at the time.
foppert
Also coincided with coming back from 2 weeks away from the team while his wife had pregnancy complications. Depends how you see things I suppose.
jorge78
Let’s see how well he does in the hitters paradise that is the Skydome…..
Poppin' Balls
Love it. Gausman came cheaper than I would have thought and will most likely be cheaper than Ray as well. Not a crippling contract at all given the Jays budget commitments after this year.
Louholtz22
If Gausman wants another contract at 36, when this 5 year deal ends, he should’ve signed with the Mets. Bigger ballpark and an easier division.
yick04
Shittier team, though.
❤️ MuteButton
The Jays have no excuse if they don’t go deep into the playoffs
Poppin' Balls
With multiple pitchers jumping at an opportunity to sign with the Jays in the last calendar year, the word may finally be out on Pete Walker.
Chemo850
I feel like this is actually a pretty fair deal. I mean this is barely over the qualifying offer from last year so the numbers don’t seem crazy. Very surprised the Giants didn’t bring him back at those numbers
YourDreamGM
Solid deal for both. I liked seeing Toronto add for a playoff push 2021.
coldbeer
Pete Walker is the future manager of this team if he wants the job…
voteposey4hof
Great Giant. Will be missed. But the Giants are still scarred by Zito, Shark. Cueto ….. long term deals that aged like cheap fortified wine.

This thread has the best post in the history of MLBTR: I quote, you get to laugh. What’s best about it is not the illiteracy, the confusion or the unforced errors, it’s that it drew 7 upvotes from similar great minds (and, obviously, not a ‘hunch’ of idiots). I’ll leave you with this beauty.

This why the Jays will never win a WS. How can they pay Gausman the same amount or even slightly more rather than offering this to Ray who became a Cy winner with us !!!!
I really hope Gausman turns out the way that they live for the rest of their live’s regretting it. What a hunch of idiots !

Gausman or Ray would have fit nicely on the Angels. Arte needs to go over the luxury tax for 1 year. Losing Upton’s $25 mil. and Syndegard’s $21 mil next year will get him back under the tax. But, I have my doubts!
