Edit: I do think France comes down to earth a bit next year unless he shows his HBP jump this year is something consistent like Mark Canha. Still a great player, just a lower OBP without that propping him up.
I know he has similar hbp numbers based on PAs in the minors, but it apples to oranges with opponent quality. Just want to see some consistency like Canha where you can almost expect at least 20 hbp.
You make it seem like Getting hit by a pitch isn’t as good as getting on base via a hit or normal walk. There’s usually a reason a player gets hit more than others. Whether it’s his stance or a various of other factors.

Not a Mariners fan so I could be underrating his clubhouse presence, but I’d say the buyout is an easy call. Hard to see Seager making more than 13 per on the open market, much less 18.

I could see a multi-year, lower salary deal. Not as long as DJL’s 6/90, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 2/20 with a third year option at 12 and a 2 buyout. 9,9,2 minimum so 3/30 with option.

As a Mariners fan from the beginning, I agree. However, I can see the front office offering him a smaller $ deal. I’d be totally fine with a one year extension at 10mil. I don’t think that will happen, but he is not worth 18-20 mil at this point in his career.
I 100 percent agree… All he is good for is dingers and defense. We could get a better overall player for half the cost. I think Kyle Seager is worth 5 million a year and that’s being nice. I don’t think baseball players should even get that much, I think a All Star should make 10M a year max.

But then ultimately the player just signs with whoever gives them the most money anyway so they forget really quick.
If you could get him for 2/25ish with a 3rd year team option I’d take it. He’s 34 and likely can replicate his numbers another couple of years.

Fan excitement shouldn’t be a factor. He needs to do what’s best to improve the Seattle Mariners baseball team. Fans are the last people on earth he should consult.
Cey Hey, you are right to a certain point but putting a team on the field that fans are excited to come and watch is always part of the equation. If DiPoto goes out and signs (or trades for) Bauer, Ozuna, etc..he would get lambasted by the fans. So while I agree he needs to do what is best for the team, keeping goodwill and excitement with the fan base is certainly a part of what’s “best for the team”.

@letsplaytwo, The Mets and Padres are the latest examples of why going overboard in one off-season isn’t a good idea. A meaningful addition or two, slight upgrades around the edge, and let the youngsters grow together. From the looks of things, the Mariners have a chance to be good for a long while. The other teams in the division are mostly in stages of transition.
Is Seager one of the malcontents who were critical of DiPoto over the Toro/Graveman trade? If so, the team doesn’t need his kind of veteran presence.

So many managers or leaders can’t tolerate differing opinions, yet they are often able to have outlandish opinions and lay blame on others. I say this as a manager of 500+. To be fair, even if a leader is ok with differing opinions, there will always be a segment that says the leader needs to do something about the squeaky wheel. MLB (compared to other sports) is often too full of itself with ego, hypocrisy, and tribalistic unwritten rules
@CeyHey Exactly my friend! It takes two to tango and perhaps Seager just never cottoned up to Dipoto. Seager is kind of a country bumpkin while Dipoto is a fast talking city slicker who eats refined lettuce and overly obsessed with his skin care regimen.

I feel at this point Jerry has proven over and over he knows what he doing. This side has fleeced multiple clubs in his tenure. I do love Kyle Seager but he doesn’t fit the mold of the team. I agree with letting him walk.

After watching Seager nearly everyday for 11 years, I respectfully disagree. I’d take a team full of Kyle Seagers if I could.
How did he hit fit the mold if the team? He is the team leader. You need to look no further than how everyone on the team reacted to him when he came off the field. The Mariners had four everyday players (Haniger, Crawford, and France being the others) that carried the offense. We need to add to that core. A one year commitment to Stager doesn’t hinder the youth movement at all, or going after an infielder free agent as Toro has shown no ability to produce from the right side of the plate and Evan White needs to start at AAA next year to work on his hitting. There are DH ABs available also. The payroll next year is negligible. It is really concerning to hear Dipoto never speaking to any player much less our longest tenured player. That continues to show the dysfunction of our current front office. They used to not be that way back in the day. Disappointing.

Tell me again how RBI’s are a reflection of the team and not an individual… Salvador Perez is on one of the worst hitting teams and he led the league in RBI. And wins for a pitcher mean nothing… The best pitchers have the most wins…
Instead, the cyber goofs talk about spinny rate… or exit velocity… give me a team with a starting rotation full of high win totals and a lineup with a bunch of RBI guys and I will beat your staff of spinny rates and lineup of exit velocity every day.

The run differential was misleading with this team. Over fifty of those negative runs were during a stretch in late April and early May when they were horrible. Also, the backend of the bullpen was very good all year so that is why they had such a good record in close/extra inning games
I’d like to add, the focus on ops at the expense of average (each has its place). A walk is not as good as a hit, no matter what suburban little league moms say…

And even as far as sacrifice flies go, I’d always want a hit instead. Too many players go up there only trying to hit one to the wall.. They’ve beaten themselves mentally already.
Good pitchers do tend to have some wins but it reflects far more on the team. Let’s look at our only 20 game winner this year, Julio Urias, and everyone will agree that he is a very good pitcher and deserves recognition. But what also deserves recognition here is that in his starts the Dodgers averaged over 7 runs per game, and that is what enabled him to get to 20 wins. No pitcher from the top starting 3 of the Brewers staff has more than 12 wins, but many other stats would tell you they are just as good if not better than Urias. For my money though I’ll give the old school thought to my Cy Young pick, Wheeler from the Phils deserves it because of how hard Girardi leaned on him with that terrible bullpen.

Decline option and renegotiate lower salary is probably what Dipoto does. Depends how low he goes if Seager will return.
Guys with a .285 OBP don’t get $20M contracts. The buyout is obvious and it sounds like there’s animosity between Seager and Dipoto so it’s pretty easy to see him playing elsewhere next year. Which I think is the right decision.
Third Base is thin behind Kris Bryant and Eduardo Escobar so Seager could have a fair amount of demand. I don’t see him getting more than a 1 or 2 year contract though.
One thing i would hope the Mariners are smarter than to decline Seager’s option and stick him with the qualifying offer
M’s unlikely to pick up Kikuchi’s option, and might use that money to bring in a free agent SP with high upside and immediate contribution like Robbie Ray.
Expect them to give SP James Paxton another shot coming off Tommy John, on a hometown friendly “make good” deal.
M’s unlikely to pick up Seager’s option at $20 million, and might use that to bring in a FA 2B/SS like Marcus Simien on a multi-year contract, moving Toro to 3B (which is why they traded for him in the first place as one of Houston’s highest ranked prospects).
M’s need to beef up DH, even though Luis Torrens has been a nice surprise and is still young with prime years ahead. A two-year deal with Nelson Cruz is not out of the question if the price is right. (Here’s some out of the box thinking….re-sign Seager as DH at a reduced price and go lefty-righty with Cruz).
Finally, the M’s can’t depend on a utility guy hitting .180 with an OBP of below .300, no matter how good his defense. Dylon Moore completely lost his mojo at the plate, big loop in his swing, always coming out of his shoes. M’s might take a shot at FA Brad Miller.
Triple-A Tacoma, the M’s top farm team, will be loaded again starting 2022 (they won the division in 2021). Likely to start the year at AAA will be Julio Rodriquez (but not for long), George Kirby (but not for long), Emerson Hancock, Matt Brash, Brandon Williamson, Evan White, and maybe even Justus Sheffield and Justin Dunn. Coming back from knee problems, they may even send ROY Kyle Lewis to Tacoma to work the bugs out.

Evan White can’t hit the broadside of a barn with a telephone poll. Kyle Lewis is very suspect at best, very injury prone but we do have many talented outfielders…too many!

Sign a First Baseman (someone here suggested C.J. Cron which isn’t a bad idea. Or maybe Jerry can fleece the Mets one more time and get Dom Smith) and let France DH with occasional time at 1B/2B/3B. Toro looked good at 2B but could be moved to Third if a Second Baseman is acquired. Kevin Padlo put up decent numbers at AAA between the Mariners and Rays.
The Mariners need a DH (Nelson Cruz reunion?) And an Outfielder though it might not be the worst thing to let Julio Rodriguez play everyday if he has a good spring

Not sure what to make of the Mariners situation. The odds of winning all those close games again with the current roster is remote. Seager might be worth the money with a better surrounding cast. Does anyone believe Mitch Haniger will repeat this season or regress to the norm? I think the latter. I’d sign Kyle Gibson and Starling Marte with the big acquisitions. See how the season goes and add more at the deadline. Still a young team.

I’d say this is Hanigers norm. Not even as good as his 2018 season this year. I don’t think there’s a need to sign a big time outfielder at all, but Kyle Gibson would be alright. We definitely need high-end starting pitching and a 2b or 3b
I worry about Jerry Dipoto’s feelings about Mitch Haniger. Is he going to do the same with Mitch Haniger as he did to Kyle Seager? It has been reported many times that there has not been any talk of an extension to Mitch Haniger. If there has nobody has heard about it.
We may have made the playoffs if Dipoto would have signed a pitcher that could have won games instead of Tyler Anderson as an innings eater…not sure what that was about. I wanted a pitcher that could win and we got an innings eater.
I say Kikuchi for one more year until we can find his replacement. That means we need at least two good starting pitchers. The team overachieved last year so we will need to prepare for that. We have way too many good or better outfielders maybe use some to get other positional players.
Well Jerry was in the D Backs front office when they got Mitch from Milwaukee I think then he traded Ketel Marte to Arizona for Mitch when he came to Seattle so I’d imagine they got a somewhat good relationship. Far as Kikuchi goes the obvious is he kicks in his 13 million option and best we can all hope for is he’s able to turn it into a good season or good enough for a trade in July
The A’s have a ton of decisions to make. None of which are cost effective for them. I don’t think they’ll spend big on Marte, as good as he was.
… Plus remember the A’s have “laser” Ramon Laureano who should be able to to play at the end of April 2022. Marte will be great to have back though.
The A’s need at least one Outfielder, a DH, a 2B, possibly a backup Catcher and a few bullpen arms.
Some of these issues could be solved internally. Khris Davis could probably be brought back on a non-guarenteed contract. Austin Allen could be Murphy’s backup behind the plate. Nick Allen could factor at SS/2B, perhaps they could convince Andrus to move to 2B. Tony Kemp and Chad Pinder will factor in at times at multiple positions. Maybe they can re-work Trevor Rosenthal’s contract since they still have to pay him the remainder of his salary from this season next season
I think both Seager’s wind up with the Yankees. The Mariners will probably bring in Cron and another lower tear FA. Most of the Mariners upgrades will come from trades.
The Mariners are going to add at least 3 free agents in the offseason, if not more. They have a ton of money to spend so there is no need to trade talent away to acquire MLB ready players. I’m sure Jerry will work a trade or two in there just to stay ‘fresh’, but I truly believe Seattle will be one of the most active teams in the free agent market this year and acquire more players via FA than via trades. They’ve spent years building their team to get it where it is today. Time to add some veteran talent and see if they can finally break their playoff drought.

Something of note that isn’t in the blurb above, he now has 10 years of service – if SEA brings him back – whether via the option or a new contract – he comes with an automatic no-trade clause. That could be a big hindrance for this club.

As much as he’s meant to the team, Seattle would be foolish to keep him at $18M; no other team will pay him close to that. Seattle should decline the option and offer him a 1yr, $12M contract. If they don’t believe Toro is their future 3rd baseman, then maybe offer him 2/$22M. Seager might be able to find a 1 year deal for slightly more money but does he really want to move his family for an extra $1-$2M? I think he’d stay if they made him this offer. Given where he is with his age and his performance, a $12M offer is more than fair and one would think he’d jump all over that unless there is a team out there willing to offer him a 3 year/ $30M+ deal, which I highly doubt there will be.

And the fact that Jerry Dipoto didn’t come riding in on his white horse to defend Kyle, not to mention the two {Jerry/Kyle} haven’t spoken in about four years…the icing on the cake was all on the scoreboard Kyle Seager’s Mariner stats, Seattle and Jerry Dipoto are done with him. Why would he even want to stay?
Seager has hit .249, .221, .239, .241 and .212 (this year) in his last five years. He hit .278 in his contract year and averaged .260 before that. Solid defensively, HR’s big this year but tough to repeat
as Bill Walsh once said rather a player go away a year too early than a year too late…Mariners would be foolish to keep him.

18MM Seems fair for his production. I think he gets that on the open market maybe a hair less. I think it’s a mistake for Seattle to let him go, you are trying to build a contender with household names that draws fans. You need a veteran to guide rookies and this man is reasonably priced. Slightly above average pay for slightly above average production, sounds like he’s a stabilizing force in the clubhouse too
Kyle Seager is the best 3B the Mariners franchise ever had. But, he just doesn’t fit this team anymore.
The Mainers should buy him out and look for a younger IF.
He is going to be 34 next year. No one is talking about a long term deal. The question is do you pick up a one year deal for close to market value? Toro is maybe a 60 RBI player. You can bring in one of the SS options and put him at 2B for 1 year and have Toro play three-quarters of the time, backing up 2nd & 3rd, Stager DH some, injuries opening up some if the time. If Toro can’t be kept off the field through earning it then so be it. If we are going to try to win our division then handing a spot to Toro over Seager who has more production and us a better 3B is not how you do it. Another Seattle team has a coach in P. Carroll whose mantra is competition. Now of course salary considerations and youth were on display with the KJ Wright decision. The difference is football has a salary cap and the Mariners have a ton of room to spend. If it were a 2 year or more option it would be a different story. There are so many unknowns on offensive spots in the roster for the coming year. Will Kyle Lewis get and remain healthy? Will Julio Rod. make it and stick thus year? Will Evan White be able to hit at a major league level? It seems like one more bridge year for Kyle Seager is perfect. After next year the answer on his future will probably be much clearer. Plus he is the veteran leader of one of the youngest teams in the league.
Buy him out, then bring him back for an additional $6-8 million.

I kinda see Toro as more of a utility player on a winning club. He and Jake Bauers. Ty has been great at 1B and should stay there for the time being. Pick up a FA 3b and someone solid at 2B. Find a decent LH bat that can split DH duties with Torrens. Catcher was pretty much a black hole this year. Not sure what to do there until Ford is ready. Torrens can chip in there on occasion too. Pencil in Haniger and Kelenic, but can Kyle Lewis play more than 1/2 a season? You can’t rely on him at this point. So probably have to get a FA OF too.
Get him out. Probably Why the team isn’t vaccinated. And since when does a gm have to have contact with players? I would be a little more grateful 10 plus years with Mariners and getting paid good money.

I would love to see Seager return for another year or two, but not at full price. His average is a concern but his power and defense are good. As far as I have seen, he’s been classy and well liked. He doesn’t need to be best buddies with Jerry but it is a bit surprising they haven’t spoken in so long. I have no idea if that is normal for a GM and veteran player though because it would be difficult for a GM to move a player he has a strong relationship with.
Seager has given us years of good memories, but time for the torch to be passed. We have too many below .250 hitters, power or not. The OF looks good with Hanover, Lewis, Kelenic and Julio on the way. JP is good at SS. White has yet to prove ANYTHING, so I could see even a rental FB with power. Or third. Moore is No is NOT the answer at 2B, so there’s a need. They should let Kikuchi go and bring in an Ace or No. 2 if possible. I hope they resign Pax. We’re so close. Just need consistency on offense. Instead of either the top or bottom half of the lineup carrying the weight while the other half ofers!
