The Yankees have set their 28-man roster for their wild card series against the Indians, beginning tonight in Cleveland. Gerrit Cole will start against the Tribe’s Shane Bieber in a great battle of aces in Game 1, and Masahiro Tanaka is lined up to start Game 2 for New York. The Yankees known to be debating whether to carry 12 or 13 pitchers onto the playoff roster, and they opted for 13 arms to provide as much depth as possible.
On the position player front, Miguel Andujar is the most notable omission, as the Yankees decided on Mike Ford as the primary first base/DH counterpoint to Luke Voit. Ford is a left-handed bat while Andujar and Voit both swing from the right side, which could have been the deciding factor given that New York’s lineup is already loaded with right-handed batters. Erik Kratz was also included on the roster as a third catcher.

Right-Handed Pitchers
- Gerrit Cole
- Masahiro Tanaka
- Luis Cessa

Ancient Pistol
Nice to see Katz got on the roster.
excusemeflo
Carlos Beltran as well, judging by the picture
twiker
That’s hilarious
DarkSide830
haha didnt notice that until now
fair-critic
Andujar is an absolute trash player anyway, I’d rather start D. Fisher from Toronto than Andujar.
Ancient Pistol
That’s not a fair criticism.
DarkSide830
yeah. saying you dislike Andujar is one thing, but Fisher? just plain rude.
twiker
I played with fisher, great guy
wordonthestreet
Oh well if he is a “great guy” then who cares about winning?
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Indians have better pitching. Cole and the millions he made had a 3.88 FIP this year. Yeah, he is filthy good but he’s on a downside trend with age. I think he will end up declining after this year. My bets are on the Indians. They have a postseason roster.
Briffle2
NYY also have a post season roster. I’m going with them.
LordD99
Yeah. That was quite the “downside” performance from Cole!

I was a Yankees fan in the 50’s and 60’s, but when GMS bought team in 73, pretty much turned me against them, especially later with the off and on again shenanigans with Billy Martin. Never resembled the team I liked after that. I’m a Rangers fan now, and I hope the Tribe eliminates the team from the Bronx.
Ancient Pistol
George brought seven championships to the franchise. I’m sure most fans would put up with him if he could do the same to their team.
hd-electraglide
I don’t totally disagree with you, except on one point, I think he did more of a “bought” than brought the championships.
CrookedAsstros
All these teams are owned by billionaires, blaming George for outspending his competition is pretty silly especially considering how poorly it worked for the Yankees post-2000 once other teams started outplaying them with Moneyball. As far as ownership goes, Mets fans had it way worse lol
Ancient Pistol
To some extent yes. However, Jeter, Rivera, Posada, among others were not. Also, don’t forget Munson was drafted (before GS) and many of the core 1977 and 78 teams were traded for such as Dent, Piniella, Randolph, and Nettles. So it wasn’t also as you suggest.
hd-electraglide
I’m not disagreeing with you @Darth, or @Crooked, Yankees have had some exceptional home grown talent, and other teams also spend mega buck. Just for me, I tend to now lean toward the small market teams, Twins for example go from worst to first a couple times. Again, not trying to be argumentative, just my humble opinion.
Ancient Pistol
I’m not trying to fight back. I just wanted to make that point known.
jonsilver
George’s two best moves: giving the keys to Gabe Paul and, later, Stick…
southbeachbully
I wonder if CEO’s in the real business world ever get chastised for paying for the best people to run their companies and perform at a higher level than the competition?
johnrealtime
Well to be fair, the Yankees had 8 chapmionships in the 50’s and 60’s, when OP was a fan of the team. So not being floored by 7 in 40+ years isn’t suprising.
I root against Bill Bellichek, his success doesn’t make up for the personality and way they approach the sport which I find so offputting
Tom1968
Only reason they won the last 5 was because steinbrenner was suspeneded and gene michael was able to put together a team and not trade away every young guy for an old one..( steroids massively helped too)
YankeesBleacherCreature
Would’ve loved to see The Mick, Joe Di, and Yogi among others. Those Bronx Zoo days were the best growing up during the dark 80s. Sure he’s polarizing but that man wanted to win and was very loyal to those he liked. I still remember when he got pissed off in the press over the Yankees’ Spring Training record one year. The dude was a trip. RIP.
hd-electraglide
Those teams in the 50’s and early 60’s were amazing to watch. Heck I “ got sick” the day the 7th game of the 1960 WS was being played, and had to get my aunt to come get me at school to go watch the game with my uncle. Still have nightmares watching Yogi circle in left field as he watched Mazaroski’s homer sail over the left field fence at Forbes Field!
whyhayzee
We just had takeout from Yogi’s favorite Chinese restaurant in Montclair. No one goes there any more, it’s too crowded.
hd-electraglide
Good one!
Wonder if it still gets “Late early” in the outfield at Yankee Stadium?
Yankee Clipper
That’s back when players wanted to win and not just get paid. When they took the field to be a team and not to hit the IL for the ubiquitous calf strain. Mantle taped up both legs and trotted out with no knee cartilage and was still better then most players. It’ll never be like that again.
LordD99
That’s a shame, missing out on the Mo, Jeter, Andy, Jorge and Bernie dynasty. Homegrown players who played hard. Hopefully you enjoyed the Rangers. 🙂
thesaint959
I’m getting tired of Boone. I like his fighting spirit but his decision-making often sucks. Andujar is one of their best hitters in the clutch. Whereas no opposing manager is ever going to sweat seeing Erik Kratz coming off the Bench. Nick Nelson? They already have Luis Cessa for mop-up duty and there are a bunch of talented kids on their 60 man I’d rather gamble on. And if I see Gardner starting over Frazier and batting 3rd I’m gunna throw something at the TV.
national pastime
Get ready to throw something at the tv. Gardner is starting over Frazier. But t he’s not batting 3rd if that makes you feel better.
DarkSide830
send him to Philly. we can have two good OF who Girardi doesnt want to play.
VinScullysSon
This comment she’d poorly. Gardner went 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI’s. Let’s hear it for the old guys says this old guy!
VinScullysSon
Aged poorly
thesaint959
I stand by what I said…though I am happy Gardner played well… I’d still rather see Frazier out there and have Andujar on the bench.
YankeesBleacherCreature
They need Kratz if they pinch-hit someone for Higgy tonight. Sanchez will start for the next four consecutive games with no days off if it gets there.
DarkSide830
so i guess NYY managers dont get a long leash, eh?
mlb1225
No opposing manager is going to sweat when Andujar comes off the bench either. I’m not a Yankee fan, but I can’t imagine he was great in the clutch when he was 2-10 in high leverage situations and 2-16 with RISP.
thesaint959
That’s not exactly much of a sample size. Why don’t ya check those numbers back before he got hurt and then tell me he shouldn’t be here.
Roll
With that logic you giving betances 18M a year? i mean we cant judge him on the small sample size from this season but look at his numbers before he got injured.
thesaint959
Betances was a great player for us, but he has a lot of mileage on that arm and has lost several mph on his fastball. So I fully expect he exercises his player option with the Mets. None of which has anything to do with Andujar or my comments. Andujar has shown himself to be a clutch hitter with plenty of pop and should absolutely be on their playoff roster.
mick77
Luis Cessa is not a mop up guy He’s become a mainstay who can come in and give you two solid innings and gets the ground ball that rolls the double play. Cessa isn’t the closer or setup guy, but he’s the guy for the 4-6 innings, and has been exceedingly good this season.
CrookedAsstros
Ridiculous that they chose Nick Nelson over Schmidt or King. If Nelson goes into a playoff game the opposing lineup is going to salivate. Ford over Andujar is also highly questionable but neither would really be slated for playing time so it probably doesn’t matter much. Good for Kratz!
DarkSide830
outside of the Philles game Nelson’s been pretty good.
Srechter35
Yes that’s actually quite true. Has posted a sub-3.00 era since that miserable outing, and threw 3 shutout innings prior to it. His command is super suspect, but he has a high 90s fastball and decent secondary stuff. I’m surprised to see so many yankee fans prefer King, who legitimately was mauled in most of his appearances.
mlbnyyfan
Nelson only sees any playing time is if Yankees or the opponent in a blow out.
pc01
If Yankees lose early, NY fans say this whole thing doesn’t count anyway. So away we go.
LordD99
pc01…And if the Yankees win it all, other fans will say this whole thing doesn’t count anyway. Got it.
rudyrudnick
ford should not be on the roster for the wild card he had a very bad season could not buy a hit
