Angels Sign First-Rounder Reid Detmers

The Angels have reached an agreement with tenth overall pick Reid Detmers, MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis reports (Twitter link).  The left-hander signed for $4.67MM, which is slightly below the $4,739,900 slot price attached to the tenth pick.  Callis adds that Detmers will be added to Los Angeles’ 60-man player pool.

After Asa Lacy, Detmers was the consensus choice as the best southpaw in this year’s draft class, with Baseball America, Keith Law, and MLB Pipeline all ranking Detmers as eighth-best player overall in their pre-draft rankings.  (Fangraphs wasn’t far behind in putting Detmers tenth, in his eventual landing spot.)  “Polished” is the common word in many of these scouting reports, as Detmers has displayed both excellent command and a knack for pounding the strike zone during his time at Louisville.  The lefty has been able to rack up the strikeouts thanks to both a fastball in the 90-94 mph range and a curveball that Fangraphs describes as “arguably the best pitch in the entire draft.”

With Detmers now in the fold, the Angels have signed all four players from their 2020 draft class while remaining under their $6,397,100 spending pool limit.  The Halos only had four picks in the five-round draft since they had to give up a pick as compensation for signing Anthony Rendon (a qualifying offer-rejecting free agent) this offseason.

  • The Brewers have signed third-rounder Zavier Warren, who made the news official today on his own Twitter feed.  Warren will receive “slightly” less than the $637.6K slot value attached to the 92nd overall pick, Tony Paul of the Detroit News reports (Twitter link).  Milwaukee is also reportedly close to an official agreement with fifth-round pick Hayden Cantrelle, as MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reports that Cantrelle took his physical earlier this week and will receive a below-slot deal.  Cantrelle’s 151st overall draft position has a $353.7K slot value.  [UPDATE: Cantrelle has signed for $300K, as per Robert Murray]

  • The Reds inked third-round pick Bryce Bonnin and fifth-rounder Joe Boyle, as reported by Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer.  Details on Boyle’s bonus aren’t yet known, though Bonnin signed for $700K, per MLB.com’s Jim Callis.  This falls slightly below the $721.9K slot value attached to the 84th overall pick.  Bonnin is a right-handed pitcher from Texas who previously went to the Cubs as a 26th-rounder in 2017. After attending Arkansas, Bonnin transferred to Texas Tech and became their Sunday starter in 2019, helping his club to a 12-1 record on days he took the hill. He finished the year with a 4.08 ERA before struggling over his four starts in 2020 (7.36 ERA).
  • Second-round pick Logan Allen signed yesterday with the Indians, but the financial details of his deal have come in. Allen signed for $1.125MM, a touch below slot ($1,276,400), tweets Callis. Allen was a two-way player in college, but like the Indians’ other Logan Allen, the southpaw’s most likely future is on the hill.
  • The Pirates announced today that they’ve signed fifth-round pick Logan Hofmann, with details first reported by Marc Delucchi and confirmed by Callis. Hofmann will receive a $125K signing bonus, which is under the $402K slot value for the 138th overall selection. Hofmann is a right-handed pitcher from Northwestern State, where he didn’t concede an earned run in 28 IP this spring.
  • The White Sox have signed fifth-rounder Bailey Horn, according to Callis. Horn, a left-handed pitcher from Auburn, will earn $150K, which comes in at less than half of the $386,600 slot value for the 142nd pick. Per Callis, Horn features a four-pitch mix, of which the slider is his best offering. By signing Horn and second-rounder Jared Kelley today, the White Sox now have all five of their draft picks under contract.

Orioles Sign Two Draft Picks

5:36PM: Both players signed for their exact slot price, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports (Twitter links).

5:05PM: The Orioles have signed two of their picks from the amateur draft, announcing that Competitive Balance Round A pick Jordan Westburg and second-rounder Hudson Haskin have agreed to deals with the club.

Financial terms weren’t announced, though the 30th overall selection (Westburg) has a $2,365,500 slot value and the 39th overall pick (Haskin) has a $1,906,800 slot price.  The O’s have already gone notably over slot with two of their other draft signings, though some type of below-slot deal is expected with second overall pick Heston Kjerstad, as Baltimore’s slight reach in taking Kjerstad at that selection was seen as a way to free up more pool money for signings in the rest of the team’s draft class.

Westburg was a consensus top-40 pick among pundits, with Fangraphs being the highest on him as the 32rd-ranked player on their draft board.  A 21-year-old shortstop, Westburg has been a big part of Mississippi State’s consecutive appearances in the College World Series, and he also performed well in the Cape Cod League last summer.  While seen as something of an inconsistent or raw hitter, Westburg has cut down on his strikeouts over his last three NCAA seasons, and could develop more power as he continues to build on his 6’3″, 203-pound frame.  That size could make Westburg a candidate to eventually move to third base, though he is considered to have the athleticism and throwing arm required to earn a look at shortstop.

Haskin, an outfielder out of Tulane, has drawn some comparison to Hunter Pence for, to quote, Baseball America’s scouting report, a swing that “works despite being ugly.”  Haskin’s lengthy swing has nonetheless delivered impressive results at the plate, and he could also potentially work as a big league center fielder given his plus speed and solid defense.  The Orioles were clearly higher on Haskin than most pundits — the 21-year-old was ranked 51st on Keith Law’s board, 74th by MLB Pipeline, 76th by Fangraphs, and only 211st by Baseball America.

White Sox Sign Second-Round Pick Jared Kelley

The White Sox have agreed to a deal with second-round draft pick Jared Kelley, according to Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com. Kelley, an 18-year-old right-hander from Refugio High School in Texas, will receive a $3MM signing bonus, which comes in well above the $1.58MM slot value for the 47th overall pick.

Despite being chosen in the second round, Kelley by all accounts boasts the talent to warrant a first-round selection, with MLB Pipeline touting Kelley as the 12th-ranked prospect in this year’s draft class. That, along with a commitment to the University of Texas, means that Kelley commands a considerable signing bonus.

Kelley’s a big right-hander with a fastball to match, running the pitch up to 98 with an effortless delivery. The changeup is a surprisingly polished pitch for a high-schooler, and it’s easily his second-best offering. All that said, the biggest question in the way of Kelley’s path to becoming a top-flight Major League starter will be the development of his breaking ball, which is at best an average offering. Even if Kelley fails to develop and quality third pitch, the fastball-changeup combination will be enough to carry him to a high-leverage bullpen role. And while there’s value in that, such an outcome would still be considered a disappointment given Kelley’s high potential.

Amateur Draft Signings: 6/26/20

Several more post-Round 1 picks have agreed to deals with their teams. Here’s a look at the newest group of players…

  • The Brewers have locked up a pair of picks – second-rounder Freddy Zamora and fourth-rounder Joey Wiemer – Robert Murray tweets. As the 53rd pick, Zamora’s selection carried a recommended value of $1,370,400, but he’ll collect an under-slot bonus of $1.15MM, per Jim Callis of MLB.com tweets. Zamora’s a former University of Miami shortstop whom MLB.com placed 100th in its pre-draft rankings. Meanwhile, Wiemer will earn $150K, which falls well shy of the $473,700 slot value of the 121st overall choice, Murray reports. Baseball America ranked Wiemer, an outfielder from the University of Cincinnati, as the 136th-best player in this year’s class. While BA’s bullish on Wiemer’s defense, it writes that he “consistently underwhelmed as a hitter” in college.
  • The Indians announced the signings of second-round left-hander Logan Allen and fifth-round righty Mason Hickman on Friday. Allen, not to be confused with the other lefty named Logan Allen in the Cleveland organization, went 56th overall. Financial details are unknown, but his pick came with a slot value of $1,276,400. The former Florida International hurler rated as MLB.com’s No. 46 prospect before the draft. Hickman, an ex-Vanderbilt Commodore who came off the board at No. 154, signed for the full slot value of $343,400, Paul Hoynes of cleveland.com relays. Baseball America pegged the 6-foot-6, 230-pound Hickman as the 161st-best prospect available before the draft.
  • The Rockies have wrapped up second-round righty Chris McMahon – pick 46 – for $1,637,400, Callis reports. That checks in a tad above the recommended slot of $1,617,400. McMahon, yet another former Miami Hurricane, came in at No. 45 on Keith Law’s list at The Athletic going into the draft. Law calls McMahon “a strike-thrower with three pitches, a pretty good delivery, and nothing plus or even consistently above-average.”
  • The Mariners and ex-Mississippi third baseman Tyler Keenan reached a deal Friday, Callis tweets. Keenan, a fourth-rounder and the 107th pick, signed for $500K – down from the recommended value of $543,500. Keenan’s a powerful, high-exit velocity hitter, but he’ll need to improve his quickness as a defender in order to stick at third, Callis writes.
  • The Rays have signed fourth-round shortstop Tanner Murray, according to Callis. His deal means the club has signed all six of its selections from this year. Murray, previously with UC Davis, inked a deal worth $455,600 – full slot value for the 125th pick. He’s a high-contact, high-OBP offensive player who’s versatile enough to play multiple positions, per Callis.

Indians Sign First-Rounder Carson Tucker

The Indians have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice Carson Tucker, according to Robert Murray (via Twitter). He’ll receive a $2MM bonus.

Tucker will follow older brother Cole Tucker, an infielder with the Pirates, in chasing the big league dream. The younger sibling was chosen 23rd overall, a choice that came with a $2.93MM slot value.

Most draft pundits graded Tucker as a second-round talent. But that’s not quite how the Indians saw — though they did get him for an under-slot rate.

ESPN.com’s Kiley McDaniel slapped the highest ranking on the younger Tucker brother, listing him as the 33rd-best available player. Per McDaniel, the Arizona high-schooler “is a hit-first plus athlete” who was on the rise as the draft approached.

Reds To Sign Austin Hendrick

The Reds have agreed to terms on a $4MM signing bonus with first-round pick Austin Hendrick, per MLB.com’s Jim Callis (Twitter link). That’s a bit shy of the $4,366,400 value associated with Hendrick’s No. 12 slot. A high school outfielder from Pennsylvania, the 19-year-old Hendrick had been committed to Mississippi State but will instead turn pro.

Widely regarded as one of the top prep bats in this year’s draft, Hendrick is touted for his raw power and bat speed — two traits that landed him as a slam-dunk first-rounder on virtually any pre-draft rankings one could find. Baseball America tabbed him ninth in this year’s class. MLB.com ranked him 13th, as did FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen and ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel. Keith Law of The Athletic ranked Hendrick 21st. He’s also credited with an above-average arm, giving him the profile of a prototypical slugging right fielder. He’s seen as an average or better runner for now, though, so Callis notes that there’s a chance he could handle center field at the game’s top level as well.

If there are red flags in the reports on Hendrick, it’s his penchant for swinging and missing and the fact that he’s a bit old for the class, having turned 19 shortly after the draft. Hendrick didn’t face tons of premium pitching in high school, either, so he could have some adjustments to make in pro ball. As with so many high school draftees, then, there’s a fair bit of risk associated with Hendrick but also tantalizing upside. He’ll bring one of the draft’s most powerful bats to a Reds system that is currently lacking on premium outfield prospects.

 

Tigers Expected To Sign Spencer Torkelson Before Players Report

The Tigers are expected to finalize a deal with No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson prior to the resumption of training camps, Jason Beck of MLB.com writes. Lynn Henning of the Detroit News tweets that Torkelson is expected to sign his deal as soon as Sunday and will likely receive a bonus slightly north of his $8,415,300 slot value. MLB.com’s Jim Callis notes that the Tigers can pay as much $8,441,985 without being penalized with the loss of future picks.

Torkelson is regarded as one of the best bats to come out of the draft in decades. The 21-year-old posted an otherworldly .337/.463/.729 with 54 home runs, 33 doubles and a 110-to-104 BB/K ratio in 628 plate appearances as Arizona State’s regular first baseman. The 20-year-old slugger was long the favorite to go No. 1 overall in this year’s draft and is viewed as a fast-moving bat who could be a fixture in the middle of a big league lineup for years to come. Baseball America has already ranked him as the game’s No. 11 overall prospect on its updated Top 100 list, and Torkelson now checks in at No. 38 on the updated rankings from FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen.

While it’s unlikely that Torkelson will be brought to the big leagues this season, of course, Beck notes that the club is still at least considering Torkelson for its 60-player pool that must be submitted to MLB by Sunday evening. Placing Torkelson in that pool would afford him some developmental opportunities in the rebooted Spring Training and then with non-active-roster players throughout the duration of the relaunched 2020 season. Torkelson can obviously be placed on that list without being added to the 40-man roster and wouldn’t get service time simply for being in the 60-player pool, so there’s little downside for the Tigers when it comes to including him.

Tigers GM Al Avila announced earlier this week that the club had signed Competitive Balance pick Daniel Cabrera, and the club has also announced deals with second-round pick Dillon Dingler, third-round pick Trei Cruz, fourth-rounder Gage Workman and fifth-round selection Colt Keith. Torkelson is the lone unsigned player among the bunch, but it sounds as though he’ll put pen to paper and officially begin his pro career in the near future.

Amateur Draft Signings: 6/25/20

A look at the latest post-Round 1 signings from this year’s draft class…

  • The Mariners have signed second-round outfielder Zach DeLoach and fifth-round right-hander Taylor Dollard, the team announced. DeLoach, the 43rd overall pick, will make full slot value of $1,729,800, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. The ex-Texas A&M outfielder ranked as MLB.com’s 79th-best pre-draft prospect. Dollard, the 137th choice, also signed for slot value ($406K), Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com tweets. The former Cal Poly hurler was MLB.com’s No. 184 prospect entering the draft.
  • The Rays have signed second-rounder Ian Seymour, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The former Virginia Tech left-hander reached a deal worth $1,243,600, full slot value for his pick (No. 57), according to Robert Murray. Keith Law of The Athletic rated Seymour as the No. 94 prospect available heading into the draft, writing that he has a “very funky” delivery and could have a chance to amount to something more than a back-end starter if he improves one of his three pitches (fastball, changeup, breaking ball).
  • The Cardinals announced that they’ve reached an agreement with Arkansas high school right-hander Tink Hence, the 63rd overall pick. Financial details are unknown, but the recommended slot value checks in at $1,076,300. The Cardinals acquired the Competitive Balance Round B selection they used on Hence in a noteworthy trade with the Rays in January. Hence entered the draft as the 123rd-ranked prospect available at Baseball America. He committed to the University of Arkansas before the draft.
  • The Reds have inked fourth-rounder Mackenzie Wainwright, Callis tweets. The 113th overall pick signed for his full slot value, $512,400. While shin issues have hampered Wright, Callis observes that the Ohio high schooler outfielder and Ohio State recruit possesses “projectable power” and a “solid arm.”

Yankees Sign First-Rounder Austin Wells

The Yankees have signed 28th overall pick Austin Wells, he announced on Twitter. The catcher agreed to a $2.5MM bonus, Jack Curry of the YES Network reports. That just about matches the $2,493,900 recommended slot value of his selection.

The Yankees have long been after Wells, whom they drafted in the 35th round in 2018. But Wells elected to attend the University of Arizona, where he upped his stock by slashing .357/.476/.560 with seven home runs in 351 plate appearances. As a result, the 20-year-old went into this month’s draft ranking in the vicinity of where the Yankees took him, as Baseball America rated Wells 21st among available prospects, MLB.com placed him 27th, ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel put him at 36, FanGraphs had him 40th, and he checked in at 44 on the list of Keith Law of The Athletic.

As his numbers with the Wildcats show, Wells thrived as a hitter in college, and MLB.com writes he “has power to all fields, with good timing and a simple setup at the plate.” There are questions over whether Wells will make it as a catcher in the pros, but his bat and athleticism could make him a viable first baseman or corner outfielder if he doesn’t stick at his current spot. MLB.com likens Wells to the Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber, an ex-catcher who has become a slugging outfielder in the majors.
