The Cubs are “pushing hard” to sign free-agent closer Craig Kimbrel, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports (via Twitter). He’d obviously be a much-needed upgrade for a Cubs ’pen that has been without closer Brandon Morrow all season and has endured numerous other injuries so far in 2019.
If a deal does indeed come to fruition, it’d represent a change of course for the Cubs, who spent the offseason making a series of small-scale additions due to ownership’s claim that the team simply didn’t have the resources to add to the team’s payroll. Kimbrel has been reported to be seeking a three-year pact, so it’s possible that the Cubs could backload a multi-year offer to ease up on the financial burden for the current season, but they’d still pay a 32 percent luxury tax on the average annual value of Kimbrel’s contract. The Cubs’ payroll already tops $213MM, and their luxury-tax payroll (calculated by the combined average annual values of all the contracts on the roster) checks in north of $227MM, per Roster Resources’ Jason Martinez.
Chicago recently welcomed Pedro Strop back from the injured list, and adding Kimbrel would be a second boon to the relief corps in a short period of time. Kimbrel won’t be ready to step directly into a game setting, of course, but he’s assuredly been throwing in preparation to join a team as soon as possible. In all likelihood, he’d build up over a relatively brief minor league stint and join his new team within a matter of weeks.
As soon as the calendar flipped from Sunday to Monday this week, Kimbrel and fellow free agent holdout Dallas Keuchel were freed from the burden of draft-pick compensation, so signing him would only cost the Cubs money at this point. He’s also been somewhat prominently connected to the Twins, although it’s quite arguable that the Cubs’ need is greater. Minnesota is enjoying a 10.5-game lead in the American League Central, whereas all four teams in the NL Central are within 5.5 games of the Cubs; the Brewers, in particular, are only a half game back of the Cubs in the standings.
The most common other suitors listed for Kimbrel have been in the NL East: the division-leading Phillies and Kimbrel’s original organization, the Braves. Philadelphia has reportedly only been interested in Kimbrel on a short-term deal, however (presumably, a one-year pact). As for the Braves, their interest in Kimbrel has clearly never aligned with the fanbase’s at times ravenous desire to see Kimbrel once again take the mound in Braves gear. The Atlanta faithful have gone so far as to audibly chant, “We want Kimbrel” during Braves games at SunTrust Park, but the front office has maintained a more measured approach to whatever interest it holds in bringing Kimbrel back to Georgia.
Chitown Tony
This certainly is no surprise at all. But they’re going to have some stiff competition I’m betting
ChiSox_Fan
They already signed him to multi year deal.
DarkSide830
if strop and morrow come back strong that pen could go from scary to scary good
Gavin B
Yes. It is wishful thinking but imagine cishek and strop in the 6 and 7th. Morrow in 8th Kimbrel in 9th. Now that’s lockdown
wrigley03
I bet Morrow will NEVER pitch for Cubs again, and i think the team would be happy with Edwards, Brach in 6th or 7th abd strop & Cishek in 7 th or 8th , Kimbrough in 9th
pullhitter445
Makes sense and would help a championship caliber squad. I’d be concerned if it were a multi year deal, as advanced metrics indicate a declining pitcher. Could be the next heyward, darvish, chatwood, bad contract.
AlvaroEspinoza 2
How many 31-year-olds do NOT have some declining advanced metrics?
iverbure
Exactly why no team should ever sign any to muti year contracts if you want your team to win
bencole
You wouldn’t sign anyone with that approach and therefore wouldn’t win
iverbure
All free agents suck it’s been proven over and over again. Even if it isn’t 100% true the number of albatross contracts far outweighs the great muti year contracts. Now every GM agrees with me and that’s why clowns on here cry and complain about collusion lol
advplee
Freddie Freeman’s extension is starting to look like a steal. But I think you are talking more free agent contact than extension.
jbigz12
The Yankees would much better off without Britton, Ottavino, and Chapman. No doubt about that…. Iver enjoys to talk down to people as if he is superior but the man has no clue.
advplee
Exactly jbigz12. This is why I hope the Braves do no overpay for Kimbrel and trade for a closer.
The Lizard King
Jon Lester says “hi”.
bencole
You’re right that most free agent contracts are bad economic value. Free agency should be used for what you can’t develop internally. I have an Economics degree so I get your perspective on value, but sometimes I think people like you forget that the objective isn’t to get the best financial value in the performance you do have, its to win championships. No team is able to develop everything. The more you save in developing the core, the more you can spend to buy the rest.
Brittingham
I think it would be worth the risk for any seriously contending team that needs bullpen help to sign him through next season. I wouldn’t do a 3 year deal though.
grecoisu
Probably the only way it happens. But think of it as only 2.5 years as he hasn’t had any real strain on his arm this season.
jhuck5
Atlanta fan meltdown in 3…2…

…1 …Expletive Deleted… Expletive Deleted …We want Kimbrel! We want kimbrel!!! …Expletive Deleted lol
advplee
I suppose I am in the minority. As a Braves fan I DON’T want them to sign Kimbrel. I hope they pass and trade for a better option.
MC Tim C
Yea good luck with that.
coldbeer
Cubs jumping into the mix to jack up the price on the Phillies when they sign him?
richdanna
Oorrrrrrrrr more likely, they have a real need?
jrad2007
So how’s Kimbrel to the Phillies working out since the Cubs are signing him.
solaris602
I can understand the Cubs’ sense of urgency here since the past year and a half have taught them they cannot realistically hope to get anything out of Morrow. Strop CAN close, but the Cubs braintrust knows better than to go all in on him.
ASapsFables
Make it so Theo, even if you have to”roofie” Tom Ricketts in the process.
snotrocket
He is Theo Epstein, not Theo Huxtable.
Steven Chinwood
Bravo Sir…
Take a bow
Bocephus
Aaron do you even have a favorite team?
ChiSoxCity
He’s a fan of both teams. Your tribalism is tedious. There’s no reason not to root for both teams if you’re a true Chicagoan, and not just some WGN superfan from back in the day. Evolve.
Bocephus
My sympathies for your Schizophrenia
iverbure
One year 7 mil. Extra 1 mil per 5 games finished. Obviously the player will have to earn the money so he’ll sign with someone else which is good because the contract I proposed is a huge overpay.
frankf
You’re joking, right?
iverbure
No he nor any other free agent to sign late into the season is ever a game changer unless your trying to tank with Greg holland or Stephen Drew’s and Morales seasons of 2014.
lefty58
Here’s why we need the thumbs down button to make a comeback.
CrewBrew
Still think the Brewers are going to land either Kimbrel or Dallas. Really hoping the cubs dont get kimbrel though.
Bryzzo2016
Keuchel seems like an ideal fit for Milwaukee. Sterns rolled the dice that guys like Chacin would pitch way over their head this year like they did last year and it’s clearly not happening. A legit starter seems a no brainer for the Brewers.
ASapsFables
Nice take Bryzzo!
I’d still like the White Sox to consider veteran southpaw Dallas Keuchel on a reasonable 3-4 year deal with a vesting option or two to help anchor their future rotation that looks to be chock full of young right-handed power arms. Keuchel might be able to help the White Sox as they transition from rebuilders to contenders in a similar fashion to what FA Jon Lester did prior to the 2015 season on the North Side of town. I liken Keuchel to former White Sox fan favorite Mark Buehrle.
I’m also pulling for the Cubs to land closer Craig Kimbrel on a shorter term deal to solidify the backend of their bullpen for a year or three.
CrewBrew
Keuchel would fit well. They need a lefty in the rotation that is not Gio. Maybe Nelson can be effective now that he is back but thats a brutal injury to come back from. Keuchel Woodruff and Davies looks a heck of a lot better in a playoff series than Chacin Woody and Davies.
ChiSoxCity
Keuchel will be a batting practice machine long before any multi-year contract expires.
jvent
Was hoping the Mets get Kimbrel their bullpen is a mess except for Lugo lol and Kimbrel can share closer duties with Diaz.
bravesfan
BRAVES DONT MESS THIS UP!!!!! GO GET HIM STOP MESSING AROUND AND BEING CHEAP!!!
iverbure
Spending doesn’t equal winning I dunno why you Boras shills haven’t figured that out yet. All teams have a guy in the system that can do what Kimbrel will do but for a fraction of the price.
dray16
no
Senioreditor
No they don’t and that’s why nearly every bullpen sucks this season.
iverbure
Lol ok Scott Boras.
jbigz12
The budding genius GM in training Iverbure is back to drop some sick knowledge on us “simpletons.”
PopeMarley
We’re not worthy
skip tracey
no they don’t. not with Kimbrel’s experience and stats.
skip tracey
Boras shill I am not good sir. lol
…Plus. Boras: not kimbrel’s agent.
petrie000
If your assertion was even remotely true, there would be no interest in Kimbrel at all and every team would be perfectly happy with it’s bullpen situation
Reality is mocking your theory… As is Scot Boras
RunDMC
I am confident in Dan Winkler.
skip tracey
Winkler doesn’t lack in guts and perseverance that’s for sure.
Mikel Grady
But but the cubs have no money the cubs have no money. Move over cards and brewers watch the big boys swim in the deep end.
Richard Cleven
Don’t quite understand your statement. They have the money. With Zorbist out, who they are not paying. The Cubs don’t expect him back either.
Fred K. Burke
Just go for it and try to sign Kimbrel. Agreed, the competition will be fierce to sign him. A 3 year deal, actually a 2.5 year deal through 2021 sounds about right to me. 40-45 million? He can hopefully be “The Guy” to close. Looking past this season. The Cubs only have 2 relievers signed for 2020-Montgomery and Edwards. The rest of the current relievers have either expiring contracts or have team options. Signing Kimbrel now will take at least some pressure off the front office this upcoming off season. Now really go for it and try to make a deal with Toronto for Giles. Yeh, I hear ya, two guys that can close? Leave that to Maddon and he will mix and match to keep both guys happy and engaged. I can dream right?
Gavin B
Haha I’m with ya. Dreaming is fun. Imagine morrow coming back as himself too haha
Fred K. Burke
We can dream about Kimbrel and Giles. But Morrow coming back as himself would be a hallucination.
Gavin B
Ya I know lol
Wainofan
As cards fan I hope this happens, the downside potential of signing a declining closer to a multi year contract, and going further into luxury tax ramifications greatly outweighs the potential upside to bolstering their pen. Go cubs go get you another bad contract
Gavin B
What if he comes out and pitches like Craig Kimbrel haha. Then you’ll cry about it or something
megaj
If the Cubs get this deal done and Morrow comes back healthy, you are looking at a premier bullpen of Edwards, Cishek, Strop, Morrow, and Kimbrel to close out games. Add the fact that the Cubs will have Montgomery and Chatwood for long relief and it would be arguably the best bullpen in the game. Chatwood could be trade bait though along with Ian Happ. I actually wish they would bring Happ back up though and just DFA Descalso. .
themed
Just rolling my eyes at the overrated cub fans comments. They are far from a championship quality team. They probably won’t even make the playoffs. They are in desperate mode and actually should be. But they are not nearly as good as they think they are. One win in 110 years don’t make you the dynasty that you think you are. Still laughable losers and always will be.
Ry.the.Stunner
Will themed ever stop being a moron? The signs point to no.
tpchristy
Is themed a White Sox fan or Cardinals fan? Could be either…
Bocephus
Vegas has it being the same year the White Sox rebuild gets to year 10.
tpchristy
My guess is Cardinals because he mentions the number of championships and they like to talk about the 11 they’ve won even though 90% have only seen three of them.
chicagofan1978
Cardinal fan, he got real offended when someone stated Yadi was overrated and not HOF material. And he absolutely despises the Cubs to the point where he only comments on Cubs articles. The Yadi one was rare
petrie000
Neither, he’s just unimaginatively anti-Cubs. Like Chisoxcity, only less literate…
mike127
STILL undefeated in playoff series against the Cardinals.
ElMagoN9ne
They should have been making a push for him in November. They knew morrow was a bust and regret signing him. Strop is good but he’s not a closer. The Cubs have 5 blown games not even including the 9th or later innings. they should have started 9-0 or better not 2-7. Even with that bad start they are a game ahead in first with Milwaukee slowing trending down.
lefty58
I have to admire the body of work Theo can stand behind, but this seems like a significant mistake.
bradthebluefish
Add a player’s option on the contract. That way the average cost is what’s prior to option.
pageian
As a cub fan I’m okay with this but it worries me. The later year (s) if a contract for Kimbrel might not be very good with him in decline. Still, the guy can pitch, even with diminished stuff.
Jimcarlo Slaton
Not a good day for the Phillies’ pitching staff today, despite a nice comeback win. Arrieta is looking more and more like a bottom of the rotation guy.. Seranthony Dominguez left with pain in his elbow.
ElMagoN9ne
Deal is in place. Pending a physical. Kimbrel will be on the Cubs
