A pair of players has been outrighted after clearing waivers …
- The Mets will retain the rights to former first-round draft pick Gavin Cecchini, who was recently dropped from the 40-man roster and seemed a plausible candidate to be claimed. Evidently, no rival clubs were intrigued enough to create the roster space that would have been required. Cecchini is still just 25 years old and has at times hit well in the minors, but he has never developed much power and was limited by injuries last year.
- Also heading to Triple-A after losing his roster spot is Mariners righty Max Povse. The writing was on the wall after Povse scuffled through his two seasons with the Seattle organization, though the former third-rounder still has some impressive physical tools. The M’s will presumably be glad to hang on to the 6’8 hurler. If he throws well in camp or at the outset of the season, it’s still possible he could find his way back to the MLB mound in the season to come.
chip1995
Really surprised no one took a flyer on Cecchini.
sidewinder11
Same goes for Povse

Gavin and Garin could hit in the minors, but not MLB. Both had size, but with the swing they had, it was geared for line drives and not power.
Read 1 time in an article about Garin where his father was their teacher and main instructor. Seems for 2 guys with that size, they would have changed some as they grew bigger.
chip1995
Yeah, not saying he’d be a good player or anything. Just think he’s gotta be a little more interesting than somebody on the Orioles or Marlins or something.
It’s true that Cecchini never hit for any power, but in a small sample last year at AAA, he had a .174 ISO along with a precipitous drop in his GB/FB ratio (from like 1.5 to 0.5). Guys have added power that way before, even those who didn’t have much raw power. I understand that Cecchini is also bad defensively though
mikeyank55
Yes Chip…it tells you something that no other team believed the Mets PR, huh?
met man
Really,Mike?why don’t you stick with your Yankees.
@DaOldDerbyBastard
Because he’s a POS troll.
mikeyank55
Because met your team is the Mets and it is so much fun to tell you to Man up and add something to defend them.
Really Met. Time for some spelling and punctuation lessons in your post—especially when you are whining.
MetsFanaticDanny
You’re all talk Mike, where’s the action punk???
callingoutdummies247
Hi Mike!!!! Love your comments!! Perfect bathroom reading material!!
whynot 2
You must spend a lot of time in the bathroom to keep up with all the garbage this guy keeps spewing
mikeyank55
Hey Danny. I really like your action. Just stay away from kids or we will have you arrested.
mikeyank55
Hey dummy-Do you actually work hard to look dumb, or is it that you are SO sloppy. Someone who is looking for perfect bathroom
reading material has obviously not been potty trained correctly.
It’s a shame that things were so busy at MacDonalds when you were growing up.
mikeyank55
Hey why-it’s not garbage. It’s mets’ optimism that is the garbage. Every year the team loads them up with wishful nonsense and they drink the kool aid til they get kicked in the teeth.
I’m just doing them a favor and calling it for what it is and they whine.
Such fun.
johnnyringofwc
Guys that can’t hit homeruns or steal who can potentially take a walk are a dime a dozen.
User 4245925809
that’s not really true tho. Check out his brother, garin who once stole 50+ bases. he was the one who had the instincts and “some” speed. it was the non power and really taking everything that hurt both brothers IMO. it worked really well in the low minors and some in the upper, but that approach, plus just hitting line drives isn’t going to cut it in the big leagues is why both failed.
bravesfan
Still want the braves to go get max back. Minor league deal, see if we can get him to look like the player we thought he’d turn into.
ayrbhoy
Wish we still had Luiz Gohara and Ryan Yarbrough now! when I first read about the trade I was intrigued by Povse’s potential but he’s been rubbish- u can have him haha
ethanhickey
Wasn’t that set of trades. Povse came over with Whalen for Alex Jackson and Tyler Pike. Haven’t heard of Pike since and Jackson is still nothing more that a well regarded prospect. Trade is still even as of now, waiting on Jackson.
bravesfan
I mean, I’m not expecting great things. But he was a promising pitcher when we had him. Like to see if we luck out and he turns into a solid mid reliever to trade piece again
Lefty Grove’s right hand
Povse is 6’8”? Dang, he is tall!
mets1536
Cecchini is butcher in the field has moved from SS – 3B (NO ARM) – 2B & has NO POWER.
murphydog
Hey! But his mom loves him.
mikeyank55
He’s the PERFECT MET then. Good research 1536. He can play 2B when Cano goes on the DL. Everyone (.except Mets fans in denial)’knows that PED abusers are prone to their body breaking down.
Look at Canos injuries the past few
years and you will understand what to expect in 2019-20-21-22 and 23.

Mets should give gavin a change of scenery, get out of the ny spotlight and the current logjam..
MetsFanaticDanny
Dude, they tried. They DFA’d him. No one picked him up. Honestly, I’d rather have him in Syracuse giving the Mets more organizational depth.
He could be a late bloomer one day. Just look at T.J Rivera, he didn’t get a realistic shot until his late 20’s and hit .300 for the Mets as a bench player.
Mo Vaughn
If I’m not mistaken, if someone claimed him, they would have to put him on their 40-man, now that he’s cleared waivers and is no longer on the 40-man, someone might be willing to trade for him and stash him in the minors at no cost of a roster spot.
MetsFanaticDanny
That’s true.
DarkSide830
wow, not even the O’s took a flyer on Cecchini. surprising, he has more potential then a lot of the guys on their roster.
BobSacamano
Cecchini makes sense for the tigers..jordy mercer for a cool $5m not so much. Jmo

The Dodgers drafted Povse in the 42nd round in 2011. He didn’t sign of course. Why do teams waste their late round picks on high school players?
And 2011 was the last year they could offer him any amount of money they wanted. Of course they only offered him bus fare. It’s even more pointless today with the new rules. Why do teams still do it? Go for that long shot senior sign with 3 our of 5 tools. Or pick a guy from a local beer league. Stir up the fan human interest angle. Come on front office brainiacs.
Think outside the batters box!
