Nationals superstar Anthony Rendon is slated to enter a contract year in 2019, but he told Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post and other reporters Sunday that he’s “up for” signing an extension. The third baseman revealed that he and the Nats have been discussing an extension for a year, adding that while he hopes to remain in Washington, he’d be content to enter next season without a new contract. The 28-year-old Rendon continued to make a case for a mega-deal in 2018, as he finished top 10 in both position player fWAR (eighth) and wRC+ (10th).
Here’s more from Washington and one of its division rivals:
- The Mets are hesitant to go after ex-Nat Wilson Ramos, one of the top two free-agent catchers available, because of concerns over his defense and injury issues, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweets. New York’s “prioritizing” behind-the-plate defense and putting an extra emphasis on pitch framing, Puma adds. Baseball Prospectus has typically awarded Ramos positive pitch-framing and defense marks, though going by its Fielding Runs Above Average metric, he has been a scratch or minus defender for three straight seasons. Ramos has also torn his right ACL twice, including in 2016, which limited him to 64 games in 2017 as he worked his way back. However, Ramos did catch 96 games last season – 92 more than oft-injured Mets backstop Travis d’Arnaud, whom they tendered a contract Friday. Of course, Ramos is sure to require a pricey multiyear commitment, whereas d’Arnaud’s essentially set to play under a one-year deal worth a projected $3.7M.
- Keith Law of ESPN (subscription link) applauds Washington’s acquisition of catcher Yan Gomes from Cleveland, writing that the Nationals made a sizable improvement behind the plate without surrendering much. Having Gomes instead of 2018 starter Matt Wieters as their primary catcher could mean at least a four-win upgrade next year, Law posits. Law goes on to assess outfielder Daniel Johnson and right-hander Jefry Rodriguez – whom the Indians received for Gomes – in detail, noting that the former just endured a disappointing, injury-shortened season and the latter may only max out as a righty specialist in the majors. But Law explains that there’s hope for Indians catcher Eric Haase, who may succeed Gomes as their main backstop.
- Between Gomes and free-agent signing Kurt Suzuki, the Nationals have made a pair of noteworthy additions at catcher in the past couple weeks. Although, as Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post notes, it’s not yet clear how the Nats will divvy up playing time between the two next season. GM Mike Rizzo suggested Saturday that he’d leave it up to manager Dave Martinez, who declared that “they’re both going to split time.” Rizzo added that Suzuki could see action at first base, where he has never appeared in a major league game. Regardless, Suzuki’s “totally on board” with the Gomes pickup, per Rizzo.
MetsYankeesRedSox
Ok you stat geeks…whose the oldest available catcher out there?
Markdashark
Idk how old are you? You did switch from pitching to catching recently right?
MetsYankeesRedSox
Why don’t you get on “top” of it to find out? I’m sure you’ll get to the “bottom” of it.
MetsYankeesRedSox
But I gave you an upvote anyway.
I knocked it out of the park on setting that one up.
joshua.barron1
Is Carlos Ruiz still playing? Lol

Chooch is the sh*t!

Aj Ellis.

Tough call on Ellis.
Ruiz didn’t play in ’18.

Odd that Suzuki’s best two offensive years of his career have been the last two… but I don’t see him playing much 1B, if any. Nothing wrong with having two capable backstops in case one gets hurt.
Jean Matrac
Teams need two capable backstops even if no one gets hurt.
petrie000
Most starting catchers only get about 120 games anyways to keep their knees from giving out. Having a competent backup is kind of a must for any team serious about playing in October
sidewinder11
Maldonado makes perfect sense for the Mets.
zak1993
Cervelli + Mitch Keller + a mid-level prospect for Syndergaard?
Pirates clear money to upgrade other areas and get an ace to put in front of Taillon and Archer. Mets get a pretty good defensive catcher with offensive abilities, and a really really good pitching prospect that could be in the majors for them mid 2019
c1234
Pirate fan, eh?
zak1993
What would you counter with?
jbigz12
I would counter by hanging up because Pittsburgh doesn’t really have the prospects/players I want for syndergaard. You made your move for archer. If you still had those pieces maybe they could find common ground.
zak1993
So your saying you would rather have Glasnow over Keller basically?
jbigz12
Not at all what I’m saying. I’m saying I’d like to have some combination of meadows baz and Glasnow with Keller for syndergaard.
petrie000
I’d counter with an actual headliner, personally…
JKB 2
There is no counter to am offer that bad
Syndergaarden Cop
what a complete joke. just stop.
zak1993
Lol do you think you’d really get a lot more than that? I would say a top 15 overall prospect in baseball and a organizational 15-30 prospect plus the catcher you need, would be a solid return for a really good starter, granted one who’s only pitched more than 150 innings once in his career
c1234
I wouldn’t want a 15-30 top prospect from the pirates farm, no thanks.
rhymo
Honesty the only deal the Mets might make for just one prospect would be Syndergaard for Vlad jr. and even then Mets would probably want more. Cervelli, Keller and another prospect would get you a Jason Vargas off the Mets.
Mjm117
rhymo clearly doesn’t know what type of prospect Keller is.
Netflix&RichHill
This has to be a troll. Syndergaard has what, 2 years of control left? Vlad is the best pure hitting prospect baseball has seen in i don’t even know how long. The mets would have to give up much more than syndergaard to get vlad, not to mention that the blue jays would never even consider trading vlad right now
Syndergaarden Cop
the fact that your posts are being downvoted to oblivion is a signal to everyone (but you, apparently) that you’re a moron
JKB 2
3 years of control for Noah. Not two.
callingoutdummies247
You beat me to it
Mjm117
The 2nd best RHP prospect in Keller and Hayes would HAVE to be the going to the Mets. Plus money to offset Cervelli and a mid level prospects to pry away Thor.
Those Two major prospects could do it but more would be need for Thor
jbigz12
Cervelli is on a one year 12 MM deal. No money needs to go anywhere to offset anything. He’s well worth that deal.
bobtillman
Ya, if Baron Von Snoot wants to auction off Thor, it’ll be the greatest swap meet since the Rays did the same with Archer last July. It isn’t if it’s a “fair” deal; it’s who bids the highest.
The Pirate suggestion isn’t a BAD return, but lots of other teams can beat it.
zak1993
I think most Pirates fans wouldn’t be opposed to adding one of our infield prospects not named Hayes or Tucker. Besides those 2 I would think any other prospect is fair game to add
tylerall5
I don’t think the Pirates are that good of a team to warrant moving lots of prospects for a guy like Thor. Sure a rotation of Thor/Taillon/Archer with Williams, Nova, Musgrove, Kingham, Kuhl, etc. would be great; however, their lineup just isn’t that good. Right Field is going to be rough until Polanco gets back and he isn’t a lock for steady production, Short is a wildcard, and can the corner infield produce to their potential? There’s just too many holes to fill before you make that kind of move IMO
metfan4ever
I’m not trading Thor FOR ANYONE. He’s 26 & on the up swing. No team has the C & CF who’s hits from the right side that would be an upgrade.
rhymo
But hey some of these guys think Vlad for Syndergaard and deGrom would be a fair trade but who knows my man. I agree with you don’t trade Thor for anyone but apparently Vlad is better than him already without playing a single game in the majors
SonnySteele
Funny how the Muts are concerned about Ramos’ injury history but re-signed the poster boy for injury-prone catchers (Travis d’Arnaud).
Out of place Met fan
Agree to a point, TdA (TdL to #MetsTwitter) is not even a guaranteed contract at this point. Where as Ramos will require a multi-year commitment at ( a minimum) twice the AAV. And you do have to consider how long Ramos can actually play behind the plate.
Danny B.
I’m convinced that the Mets will either trade for Austin Hedges or sign Martin Maldonado.
portopotti
d’Arnaud can be cut before opening day for miminimal expense. It’s more of a backup plan then anything else.
JKB 2
Its not funny. Its sensible. Ramos would cost a lot of money. d’Arnaud will not
54scooterb
I wasn’t hesitant choosing Wilson Ramos signing with the Mets. Offer a 1 year contract with a 2020 option with say 100 games played. I wouldn’t hesitate to go 1 – 4 in the contest.
savagedeluxe
What would it take for the mets to get Realmuto? Could they package D’Arnaud with McNeil and _____?
Friarfaithful117
Alonso and Gimenez, even that is probably light based on what the Marlins have been asking
Danny B.
If I were the Mets, I would forget about Realmuto.
Danny B.
I keep reading that the Padres really want Syndergaard but don’t want to trade Tatis Jr, Gore or Urias. If I were the Mets, if the Padres really don’t want to trade either one of those elite prospects, then the following proposal would be the ONLY one that I would consider:
Padres get: Noah Syndergaard, Travis d’Arnaud & Kevin Plawecki
Mets get: Manuel Margot, Austin Hedges, Francisco Mejia, Chris Paddack, Adrian Morejon, Michel Baez & Logan Allen
If the Padres say no, then the Mets should move on. This trade would give both teams essentially what they want. Padres get their Ace while holding onto their most prized prospects. Mets get their CF, upgrade at catching and replenish their farm.
jbigz12
That package is ridiculous from SD. Do you really think they’d give up 5 top 100 prospects, their starting catcher and a capable young CF for Syndergaard. That’s just insane. That’s an unprecedented haul. Honestly insane. That deal is closer to a package you’d give up for syndergaard and let’s say nimmo together. And I’d probably still take it if I were running the Mets.
jbigz12
Please show me any one player who has gotten a haul anywhere near that level. I’d give you nimmo and syndergaard for that package without question and still feel really good about it in NY.
Danny B.
Another fan that overvalues & overhypes prospects. So you’re telling me that the Padres wouldn’t trade these UNPROVEN prospects for an ace caliber pitcher with 3 years of control left??? They absolutely would, especially if it meant holding onto Tatis Jr, Gore & Urias. Even Mejia debuted last season and only hit .179 in his 21 games in the majors. Margot underperformed last season and might turnout to be a disaster. Hedges may be a good defensive catcher but only hit .231 last season with a .711 OPS. The fact that the Padres could get a player like Syndergaard for 2 major league players that produced a combined 1.6 WAR and Syndergaard produced a 4.2 WAR by himself. Yeah, I believe the Padres would do that. There’s a chance that only one of those prospects turnout to be a successful major leaguer.
jbigz12
I’m simply asking for evidence for a team ever receiving a haul of that level. You can’t give me that because no one has given up a package like that for a single player. Not even Dave Stewart coughed up that kind of package.
jbigz12
I don’t love hedges and Margot. Never claimed to. They’re useful major leaguers at their floor which they’ve shown. They’re essentially throw ins in your trade. You’re giving them 5 top 100 prospects on top of those guys. One of which is the top catching prospect in the game and another is a guy with TOR potential who tore threw the minors. What other team in baseball has 5 of these guys? 90% don’t even have them let alone will trade them away for one player.
Danny B.
Okay, fine, even though Chris Sale got the White Sox the #1 prospect in all of baseball at that time Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopesch(currently 19th best prospect in Top 100) and two other prospects with one of them being the White Sox 9th best prospect currently. If adding 5 Top 100 prospects to 2 average major leaguers is too much then fine, I’ll give you that. Then what if we just removed Logan Allen. Would that be acceptable???
jbigz12
Sale is a much better pitcher. Sale was a much better pitcher at the time of the trade. You take out Logan Allen and you’re still giving them 4 top 100 prospects 2 of which are top 25 prospects and hedges and Margot. Mejia, Paddack, one of Baez or Allen and Margot for syndergaard would be a haul for the Mets. Trading syndergaard doesn’t make a lot of sense to me because of the diaz/cano deal that would suggest you’re trying to win now. I don’t see how removing syndergaard makes you better next season in any scenario. However if they got that package from SD that’d be a great package to give up syndergaard for.
Danny B.
Well remember, the idea of trading Syndergaard is aiming to fill another hole or two while hopefully getting a few good prospects to help replenish the farm. The Mets have already talked to free agent SP’s in the event they deal Thor. They would definitely replace him. I really like the idea of signing Dallas Keuchel. A lot of people don’t view him as a top of the rotation starter but he eats a lot of innings, has championship experience and is extremely competitive.
jbigz12
Let’s break down your fictitious deal here because I truly believe it’s one of the worst I’ve seen. Would you trade syndergaard for Paddack, Mejia, and Baez? Yes, I believe a reasonable person would. Would you trade Morejon, Allen, Hedges and Margot for Nimmo?
Yeah I would. You’re not even giving them nimmo in your trade. It’s plawecki and d’arnaud which have about 1/20th of nimmo’s value. That’s truly insane that that deal makes any sense in your mind.
Out of place Met fan

brandons-3
Yep, believe you can cut any arb-eligible player up until the first game of the year and only have to pay the Spring Training portion. Contract becomes fully guaranteed once the season starts.
manos
So the Mets are hesitant to go after Ramos because he’s “oft-injured” yet they’ve hung on to d’Arnaud all this time? Nonsense. Go after Ramos and sign a reliable catcher to back him up. Grandal isn’t better defensively and will probably take a longer term to lock up.
pjmcnu
The big winners in the Nats trading for Gomes are all the teams after Realmuto. Taking a bidder with a good system out of that mix hurts the Fish. Combine that with the Marlins’ unreasonable demands (Soto or Robles plus more, down from Soto AND Robles; Gary Sanchez plus several additional high value pieces; etc, etc), and the Fish are simply overplaying their hand. They could end up getting much less later if they remain convinced that they can get what the White Sox got for Sale, etc. They can’t. Personally, I’ll enjoy Jeter’s first act turning into a colossal, self-inflicted, ego-driven failure.
Papabueno
Nats should commit to a long-term deal for Rendon. He has to be one if the most underrated players in baseball.
Rizzo needs to add a solid backup for 1B (not a fan of Suzuki playing there) because you know Zimmerman will hit the DL at some point.
