The first place Yankees are playing the fourth place Red Sox tonight while the third place Mets take on the first place Nationals. Here is the latest out of the Big Apple…
- The Mets have not yet had contract extension talks with Scott Hairston, though he is receptive to the idea according to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin. Rubin notes that the Amazin's signed Tim Byrdak to an extension at this time last year, so the GM Sandy Alderson regime has set a precedent for midseason deals.
- Rubin also reports that the Mets acquired Kelly Shoppach to see how he fits with their pitching staff and philosophies before considering re-signing him after the season. He notes that Pedro Beato, who went to Boston in the trade for Shoppach, had fallen out of favor in New York.
- The Mets have voided the minor league contract of the recently-signed Scott Patterson, reports Rubin. The right-hander came down with a shoulder injury in Triple-A.
- Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter) opines that second base prospect David Adams could eventually be trade fodder for the Yankees as he is blocked by Robinson Cano at the Major League level. Adams was supposed to be part of the 2010 Cliff Leenon-trade.

I’ve always love Adams as a prospect. He reminds me of a Dustin Pedroia type. Too bad his ankle injury cost him so much time. Looks like he’s healed up now. Good for him.

Lock up Hairston for a couple years.

He’s a 32 yo utility player w/ a .309 OBP this year (lifetime .303) who can’t hit righties (.707 OPS vs them) and is just OK w/ the glove. Is that the best thing for the Mets to do? To lock him up for multiple years?

He’s far more valuable than you describe…a right handed bat coming off the bench that slugs +.500 vs. lefties? Not bad, not bad at all. Hairson is a lemon – the more you see him, the more sour watching him gets, but that’s not to say he can’t be valuable in his own way.
That said even if it’s a multi-year extension I expect it be something like 1/2 years or 4/2 years, nothing crazy. That’s not a bad extension considering it would be below value. Slugging is slugging and it’s valuable no matter where it comes from.

He’s a not going to solve the problems the Mets OF has right now he’s an outstanding bench bat no doubt there just not the solution long term.

I’m not sure how much an injury plagued 25 year old prospect still in AA would be worth, lets be honest. Average reliever or complement piece to an everyday/non-allstar type.

How in the world is he “injury plagued”? He had 1 near catastrophic ankle injury that kept him out of everyday play for 1 1/2 seasons. However, he was a really good hitter before the injury and has returned to form since his return late 2011. He hits for average, draws about 10% walks and while he doesn’t have a lot of hr power is a doubles machine. This is where you have to look beyond prospect lists. He is capable of being a .290/.360/.425 guy w/ 40 dbls and 10-15 hrs in my opinion. Corban Joseph moved ahead of him simply because he was on the field and performing decently otherwise, I think Adams would be in AAA already.

Maybe seeing him play consistently a full season is what some scouts want YFS. Man, ankle injuries will/can kill prospects. Zach Daeges was like that. played 2 and a half seasons of raking the ball from 2006-2009, hurt his ankle horribly, then was released this past spring at age of 28.
Put up monster, numbers with the bat before hurting his ankle and hurt his shoulder shortly after he came back and the 2 year haitus from the game.
Adams (not sure of the severity) might have had a severe ankle injury where he had bones removed and teams want to see him on the field over a long period before making a trade.

Hey @johnsilver:disqus . Not too concerned as to whether teams are knocking on the door to trade for him. More concerned with seeing him get his just due. So far, since returning to the field he’s been nothing less than impressive:
2011 (while rehabbing thru Rk and A+) : .370/.421/.509
2012 (AA): .318/.388/.452 w/ 20 dbls and 6 hrs in 73 games.
Before the injury:
2009 @ A and A+: .286/.373/.443 w/ 40 dbls, 8 trips and 7 hrs in 490 AB
Right before he suffered the injury (and nixed the Cliff Lee deal):
2010 @ AA: .309/.393/.507 w/ 15 dbls, 3 trips and 3 hrs in 39 games.
If this guy finishes the season on this pace then he needs to be on someone’s top 100 list next year. He’s not an “old” prospect that simply hasn’t cut it. He’s a college bat that lost a 1 1/2 to an ankle injury.

A 1-year extension for Hairston could work, as he could then be trade bait next summer if the Mets are out of contention.
