Brewers GM Doug Melvin has acknowledged that Zack Greinke could be traded before he makes his scheduled start this Sunday. He told USA Today the right-hander will be traded ("It's going to be difficult when we trade him'') then offered a less definitive statement later on last night ("I just said there was that possibility"). The Rangers, Angels, Braves and White Sox are pursuing Greinke. Here are the latest rumors surrounding the right-hander…
- Though the White Sox don't have a highly-regarded farm system, they have enough talent in the Major Leagues to acquire Greinke, Heyman reports. Gavin Floyd's name has come up in trade talks, but he doesn't appear to be related to the Greinke sweepstakes, Heyman reports.
- The Braves continue to seek a starting pitcher and Greinke and others remain in play, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports (on Twitter). However, the Braves are telling teams they’re focused on bullpen and bench help, rather than starting pitching, according to Jayson Stark.
- The Angels remain very much involved in the Greinke talks, Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). Morosi reports that Greinke has a "high regard" for the Angels and thus would likely be more open to signing a contract extension to remain in Anaheim. The Angels might prefer Greinke to Shields and Johnson, according to Danny Knobler.
- The Dodgers could check in on Greinke, Jon Heyman reported today.

Frank is posturing…. he wants Greinke!
esasc4
NO, he isnt posturing, we have our pitcher in batista, we will get ankiel and some kid in a ball and wren will say “well i tried, but i just couldnt get it done, i am going fishing now, see you guys in ST”.
Rob Usry
David O’Brien of the AJC says the Braves are focused on finding the best BBQ for their post game spread and none of the 3 mentioned above.
sox2727
As someone living outside Chicago who just went to a Ribfest with 20 vendors from across the country I think the Braves would be advised to select BBQ Masters from GA…
the_show
Honestly I have zero feel for how the Greinke sweepstakes will shake out
Multiple teams could emerge from this one.
vinh
come on Angels send Bourgos to the Brewers to get Zack Greinke!
brewfan23
lol now that is funny, an OF is not exactly high on the Brewers wish list.
rainyperez
Why anyone is insisting Bourjos is even a center piece is beyond me.
Rangers4Life
Angels fans do tend to overrate Bourjos’ value. He does have good value as a CF with great defense and speed but his bat is mediocre at best. He does have many years of team control left. All in all, a good piece in a trade discussion, but not someone who should be considered as a centerpiece of a trade.
Travis Trujillo
He isn’t going to be a hall of famer but he will be a nice piece to have in center field. He hit .272 last season. Thats not bad for a number 9 hitter. He is having a down year at the plate so far this year but he will save some runs in the out field.
CowboyJames
He’s a rabbit. Thats all. Speed and glove. Not trying to slight the guy but Bourjos is not at all what you are looking for in a return for Greinke.
David Dean Conner II
We have Gomez and Morgan why would we want a third light hitting CF???
The_Porcupine
Cause Bourgos is better than either of them. And he is young enough he could grow into a better hitter. Gomez and Morgan have peaked long ago.
Marktown
The Dodgers COULD check in on Greinke? They could also check in on Bigfoot, why not report that Heyman? It would be more exciting.
Gumby65
Bigfoot? Don’t they already have Harrang?
gothamgator
I love how this keeps going on and on and on…
perhaps sometime in the next few days, Mil will finally lower their asking price… otherwise, they’re getting stuck with him and taking their draft pick
rainyperez
Why would they lower their asking price when he is the best SP on the market right now?
gothamgator
because most teams just aren’t going to give up multiple major prospects for a rental anymore with the new CBA
Chris Wizzy
All it takes is one, though.
Ryan Glover
something tells me that between Texas, LA, and Atlanta, one of their GM’s will push the boulder over the top and get a deal done. This means MULTIPLE quality prospects
John 90
Because right now Milwaukee is asking too much. When the trade deadline is nearing end and the teams have already used their trade pieces for other players then if Milwaukee wants to get anything at all in return for Greinke then they will lower their price. Until then it’s all talk.
tfence
How about when the deadline gets near other teams will realize they have to give up a lot to get an ace
the_show
What is Milwaukee’s asking price? I haven’t seen anything clear cut on that
gothamgator
It was said last week that they were asking for 2 major and 1 minor prospects from Atlanta (deal centered on Teheran, and probably Delgado, and a younger position player like Salcedo).
esasc4
hahahaha, why not include sheets, freeman, heyward prado if your going to dream.
AaronAngst
Ben Sheets is already one of the Braves most coveted players? That’s kinda sad. Admittedly, I would’ve liked to have seen Doug Melvin bring Sheets back into the fold in Milwaukee… I’m assuming there must be some small amount of bad blood between Sheets and the organization. Anyway, three prospects as payment for a guy good enough to increase your chances of winning the second major championship in Atlanta history? I don’t think that’s something to scoff at.
Art Vandelay
No, no, no. One C prospect for Greinke and then he’ll sign a five year 85 mil dollar deal cause he likes ATL. New CBA Blah Blah Blah. I find it funny how people think the brewers are just gonna give him away. He may not bring back what he would have last year but he’s still gonna be pricey. Oh, and he’s not gonna sign cheaply in the offseason either.
baseball52
So the Sox want to gut their MLB roster for Greinke? Is it just me or is this a totally misguided move? If I were KW, I’d go out and try to acquire someone like Maholm. Relatively cheap and can help the team now. They don’t need to acquire an ace when they have 3 guys pitching at high levels right now.
the_show
Kenny won’t do that
The rumor was Kenny would move Floyd to the Blue Jays in exchange for some prospects to help put the deal together
baseball52
At the same time, Floyd’s value cannot be high enough to basically trade him for Zack Greinke. Despite the CBA changes, the Sanchez deal alluded to high level pitching still being at an incredible premium on the open market.
the_show
I agree…No way Milwaukee would take FLoyd straight up
Nahtan Hgiheal
“Gavin Floyd’s name has come up in trade talks, but he doesn’t appear to be related to the Greinke sweepstakes, Heyman reports.”
You are correct.
Vegandork
It’s just you. The White Sox have tons of rotation depth, they need higher level pitchers at the end. Otherwise, why bother?
baseball52
It’s going to cost more than Gavin Floyd. I’d be willing to bet the Brewers will ask for Alexi Ramirez in the deal considering that they expressed great interest in acquiring a shortstop for Greinke.
klassic
I’d be willing to bet KW would promptly drop the phone in a fit of laughter.
brewfan23
I’d love to be a fly on the wall in Melvin’s war-room. Come on Doug, all of us Brew fans are routing for you.
Julien Benjamin
routing for him to send Greinke to Atlanta! Delgado, Spruill, Salcedo, and Gilmartin
brewfan23
I think TX trumps that offer, but I do like Delgado. I think it would take Teheran and others.
CowboyJames
I think it takes Teheran, Delgado, and one or two of JJ/Spruill/Avilan/Mejia?/Lipka?
esasc4
not for a 2 month rental!, not worth it.
gothamgator
keep dreaming
Cornelius Williams
I doubt Doug would let Zack go to the Angels….
Travis Trujillo
If the angels have what the brewers are looking for why wouldn’t he?
Connie Marse
Braves should make the deal for Greinke if they can sign him. Need to offer Greinke $140 mil, 7 years. He is 28 and has very similar numbers to Hamels (although a lower winning percentage).
AaronAngst
Spending the bulk of your career in Kansas City will lower a guy’s winning percentage.
Edit – And he’s going to free agency, so I doubt he’ll be accepting $20M per from the Braves.
esasc4
no way, were a small market team, we wont ruin our chances for 2013,14 by loading ourselves up with debt. Wren, just stay pat for this year. Wait till 2013 when delgado, teheran, graham, gilmartin, gearrin, harper, buchter are all ready at the same time, then let them come knocking.
sdsuphilip
Greinke has been the significantly better pitcher over the course of his career than Hamels, pitchers W/L record is meaningless.
RiosFan
White Sox get:
Zack Greinkie
K – Rod
Corey Hart
Rickie Weeks
Brewers get:
Adisson Reed
Nate Jones
Dayan Viciedo
Gavin Floyd
Nestor Molina
Gordon Beckham
douglasb
do the Brewers get a bucket of baseballs with that?
Ryan Klinkert
Heyman (via Twitter) says that the Brewers will receive 2 deep-dish pizzas to be baked later.
David Dean Conner II
If I am Milwaukee I would take that deal, Krod is done for, Greinke is leaving as a FA anyway, Weeks is injury prone and is having a horrible year and while I like Hart he is prone to both long hot and cold streaks. So I would take it and then have the money to fix the rest of the problems we have in the bullpen and other areas
baseball52
So, in translation, the Sox get all the best players in the deal. Ok, sounds good. That’s gonna happen.
douglasb
Comparing performance in 2012 of course anyone would prefer Greinke to Johnson and Shields. Who is pitching well NOW! And Greinke is far superior this season.
RiosFan
White Sox get shields and Tampa get Reed and a minor leaguer.
baseball52
That makes no sense at all.
SethHood422
Braves have no shot at winning the world series until they gut the front office and kick freddie gonzo out the door.
