The Cubs agreed to two significant deals today, and they might not be done yet. They sent Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson to Atlanta in one trade and dealt Geovany Soto to Texas in another. Meanwhile, Matt Garza continues drawing interest despite a fluid buildup in his triceps that will keep him from pitching until after the trade deadline passes. Here are the latest rumors surrounding the right-hander…
- The Reds are talking to the Cubs about Garza, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. A team such as the Reds could complete a deal if it determines the injury is relatively minor.
- The Cubs have tried to trade Garza to the Reds, but it's doubtful the sides will complete a deal, Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports (on Twitter).
- The Blue Jays remain interested in Garza despite his current condition, Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports.
- There's a "very high chance" Garza gets traded, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports (Twitter links). The Blue Jays have been bearing down on him. The Cubs are still trying to move Garza, Stark writes.
- The Rangers and Blue Jays are interested, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports.
- The Cubs are fielding calls on Garza and working on a Ryan Dempster deal, David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports (on Twitter).

Why must there be so much juicy action on the trade front tonight. I want to go to bed…..
Jake 21
I was thinking the samething!
Adam Roy
yeah I usually stay up like 30 hours straight monitoring this thing
jwsox
because its 16 hours until the dead line, its like xmas eve for baseball,,,,, deadline eve!
jwsox
Imagine being Jed and Theo, let alone every other GM in the league being woken up by those two
Josh Mohr
The Reds do NOT need Garza, period. Why would Jocketty help the Cubs rebuild and get stronger? We have Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Leake and Arroyo. The ONLY move the Reds need to make is, when Votto gets off the DL next week, DFA Cairo and keep X Paul as the LH OF and bench bat. Overbay doesn’t make sense either.
Nikki Cline
I think we do. Look at his previous stats..he won 15 games in 2010, and has a near mid 3 ERA for his career. Look at Leake..a guy who has an ERA in the mid 4’s. I like Leake alot. He’s young, and definitely has potential to be a solid starter in the future..but he isn’t reliable…when your in the playoffs you NEED reliability…and I think someone like Garza brings this to the table..just my 2 cents.
QCCubsPerspective
Garza will be a solid pitcher for your team. As a Cubs fan, though, he sometimes seems to be mentally lacking focus.
mlbscout6
your point about Leake is well taken, but considering the Reds look like they have the division, how many time do you suppose their #5 starter will need to start in the playoffs? My guess is zero. Now if they feel they need Garza to lock down the division that would make more sense, but I don’t think it’s worth giving up prospects interdivisionally.
Rex_Chestington
Hoyer clearly trying to use the Jays to raise the price Texas has to pay. 0% chance he ends up in Toronto
jwsox
Jed you mean?
throwitback85
Come on. This is Theo’s show.
rikersbeard
Doubt his “ploy” would work at all if you, as an uninformed outsider, can tell there is absolutely zero chance of his going to T.O.
Rex_Chestington
I never said it would work, only that the attempt is being made.
Lunchbox45
I hope it doesn’t happen, but I doubt its 0%
and i doubt daniels falls for that.
Nikki Cline
Getting Garza might be the final piece of the puzzle for the reds to be a “true” playoff threat…Granted, I like Leake, he’s young, and he’s shown to be a good road pitcher than a GABP Bandbox pitcher..that said he’s a weak link. Playoff teams shouldn’t have weak links…Hopefully a package of Corcino + Henry Rodriguz + Leake should get things done.
throwitback85
The Rangers aren’t going to get far unless they add another pitcher. I’m not sure Garza is a good fit in that ballpark, though.
rikersbeard
really? They seem to have a pretty decent team as is.
throwitback85
I don’t see them advancing deep in the playoffs again with their current starting staff.
jwsox
Get it done Jed, you know youre going to trade Garza this winter at worst so why not get one more prospect in trading him now!!
Irishpitviper
if we cant get a decent return for demp, i say put him in the pen and step on his neck like he did us
jayrig5
That sends a great message to potential free agents and other players.
Steve Keasling
not as great a message as throwing $$ at them when it is time to compete…..the greatest message athletes listen to is the $$$$.
jayrig5
No. Dempster has been with the Cubs for almost ten years, and is as well-respected among other players as there is. If players see an organization deliberately and spitefully mistreat a player like that, just for exercising his no-trade clause, that absolutely sends a message around baseball. And trust me, I wasn’t happy with the vetoed Braves deal either, but you have to think about the future. What would you gain from making an example out of Dempster? Objectively and tangibly, nothing. Whereas there is a lot to lose by doing it. Just a foolish suggestion.
MountainsofMadness
Dempster did all that himself.
jwsox
remember how your name is patientcubsfan…?
baseball52
There are reasons you’re not in baseball.
dudemanbro
theo pitting the rangers farm system vs the blue jays? aww yeah
cyberboo
Don’t get too excited. The most Chicago could get from the Jays would be a Jenkins, McGuire, plus a couple of nobody prospects, if that. Garza would be a fourth starter on Toronto, even with the injury problems and Romero having a bad year. In 2013, it is Morrow, Romero, Alvarez, then Garza, if Hutch doesn’t pass him too, making him the fifth starter. You don’t give up anything special for Garza to be a fifth starter. In the AL, Garza wins in pitcher friendly parks, but he gets blasted in hitters parks, which is backed up by his 5.43 ERA – 12 – 27 record against Boston, New York, Texas, Anaheim, Detroit and Chicago.
laffingrass
Are you serious?
Romero and Garza might be close, I’d be willing to give the edge to Garza because he’s never pitched as horribly as Romero has been.
Alvarez is nowhere near Garza, he barely reaches 3.0 k/9.
Morrow could be better, if he weren’t hurt every 2 months.
Brandon Miller
Lol Right…
Michael Nguyen
Lol@ Anaheim and Detroit being hitters’ parks. Consistency + durability + stats vs. AL East = Garza > Any Jays pitcher mentioned.
chrisenvy
Mike Olt please? haha.
Dwight
I wanted Greinke. Can Nolan save the season?
Kyle
It’s Jon Daniels, Thad Levine, and AJ Preller that handle this. Nolan is just a face who’s opinion they respect.
baseball52
So… Billy Hamilton…
Nikki Cline
lets not get carried away..this is Matt Garza..not Cole Hamels ..
Hans Larson
Right, Garza, who is under team control next year and will net a comp pick and the draft cash that goes along with it. Garza has always been the most valuable starter available due to the changes to comp picks in CBA. Not saying the Reds should give up Hamilton, but your comment is upside down regarding values.
Josh Mohr
Billy Hamilton ain’t going anywhere, lol.
Zach Hewitt
I don’t know what Walt is thinking. I kind of like it though. You know someone is going to wear down and after seeing Leake struggle tonight maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to see whats out there. Plus when playoff time comes you need 3 starters Cueto Garza Latos/Baily makes a lot more since.
Tommy Meyers
Don’t know much about the Reds system, but looking at Cingrani’s numbers, he would be a good start
Josh Mohr
Corcino, Cingrani, Hanilton, Gregorius, HRod, untouchable. Sorry, the Reds GM has said so.
Tommy Meyers
Then the Reds will not get Matt Garza, especially with the Rangers and the Blue Jays being the other 2 teams involved
TophersReds
Walt said nothing about Corcino, Cingrani, Gregorious, or HRod being untouchable. Sorry, the Reds GM said only Hamilton was ‘untouchable’ and that doesn’t even mean much if we’re blown away by an offer (i.e. something for Justin Upton).
Tommy Meyers
Exactly, Hamilton will not being go back for Garza because the Cubs need pitching. If they trade for Garza, one or two of Cingrani, Corcino, and Stephenson have to be coming back (most likely one of the three)
Nikki Cline
Cingrini is probably our number 1 pitching prospect..behind Corcino, and Stephenson…I do think if a deal occurs one of those prospects will have to be in the mix..unfortantly..
WrigleyTerror37
Just a joke but if the Cubs get Billy Hamiltion the cubs can race him and Campana during BP it will be a track meet on the baseball diamond!
David Dell
Reds will NOT trade Billy Hamilton…..keep dreaming Cub fans errr losing Cub fans
Robert McCuaig
Hilarious how much Reds fans overvalue this Hamilton kid. So what, he’s fast?! Doesn’t mean he can hit ML pitching– you can’t steal 1B!
And Hamilton doesn’t even have a true position, he is NOT a major league SS, not close and even the Reds will admit this… So what, he’s another fast CF prospect… ooooh, aaaah, gimme a break…
Jason McNeely
So I’m guessing if the Reds were to get Garza, then the rotation would be Cueto, Latos, Arroyo, Garza, Bailey? Or flipflop Garza and Arroyo. And I would assume Leake goes to the minors. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Reds pick up Overbay for a PH/1B backup plan.
Gunner65
Unless Leake is part of the trade package
bluejayspwn
snider has just been taken out of the game and said his good byes to farrel wonder who hes been traded too ?
Lunchbox45
it wont be enough 🙁
Carlo LoPapa
pittsburgh pirates
sean triplett
snider just left the game for the jays vs mariners.. i bet he’s gone to the cubs for garza
bluejayspwn
lets hope
Jamie Sayer
Snider just got of field and shook everyones hand. Wheres he goin MLBTR!?
Lunchbox45
im so upset
Jamie Sayer
Same here, just when I thought he had broken through and solidified himself in LF.
Lunchbox45
unless its for justin upton i’m upset.
Jamie Sayer
Brad Lincoln… No way….
Lunchbox45
wow
officially off the AA bandwagon, thats absolutely brutal
ice_hawk10
there have been plenty of breakthrough moments in the past with snider. i’m uneasy about the trade, but i’m not going to form an instant opinion of it either. i’ll take my snider coloured glasses off first, cause he was one of my fav’s too.
sean triplett
pirates according to the mariners announcers.. brad lincoln coming to toronto.. whoever that is
bluejayspwn
Brad lincon really ? gonna have to google that
Carlo LoPapa
Cant believe AA just traded Travis Snider to the pirates !!!!…for who Brad Lincoln ,..so AA your telling me that Eric Thames is better than Snider … 🙁 not happy
Zachary Harrison Frank
Thames is also gone..
you really see the future of the jays as Bautista, Rasmus and Snyder? Guy has a toothpick for a wrist and was once again starting to show he has no plate control, they get Lincoln who is having a break out year as a reliever who they can control until 2018.. what’s not to like about this deal ?
Ryan Sheets
Reds should trade Daniel Corcino, Kyle Lotzkar, and Henry Rodriguez for Matt Garza.
BillB325
I feel like Theo’s price for the Reds would be Corcino, Stephenson and Lotzkar
