While Larry Lucchino may not have officially signed a new deal with the Red Sox, the team’s president/CEO told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that he expects to be with the organization for years to come. It's widely known that Lucchino has a greater role in baseball operations than he did in years past when he worked with GM Theo Epstein. The CEO also told Cafardo that while ownership long considered Cherington to be Epstein's heir, there were brief discussions about going outside for a GM. Here's more from Cafardo..
- The Angels are working on a multiyear extension with shortstop Erick Aybar, who can become a free agent next winter. Agent Fernando Cuza is looking for a five-year deal and Aybar could land a big contract on the open market. If Jose Iglesias doesn't look like the Red Sox's long-term solution, Aybar may become an option.
- Interest in Nationals left-hander John Lannan has diminished with some teams that feel what they have is just as good. Boston, for example, feels equally comfortable with Felix Doubront and Andrew Miller. However, the Nats still have a pitching surplus and it appears that teams are more interested in lefty Ross Detwiler’s upside. It's also possible that Washington will want to keep all of their starters as insurance because of Chien-Ming Wang's hamstring injury.
- As the Blue Jays create more room for their top young pitchers, left-hander Brett Cecil could be made available in a deal. The former top prospect hasn’t lived up to expectations and hasn’t had an especially good spring. Last week we learned that Cecil and Kyle Drabek are drawing attention from scouts.
- Mike Aviles is the Red Sox's starting shortstop, but the Phillies are one team that would be interested in dealing for him as they look for an experienced backup infielder. If Boston committed to Iglesias, Aviles could be made available.
- The Indians are wading through left fielders to find a fit, and they could wind up with Johnny Damon. One Tribe exec shot down that idea yesterday, saying that Damon's lackluster defense kills any interest they might have. While the Orioles keep indicating they won’t sign Damon, the veteran would be a great fit for their lineup.
- Cafardo wonders if Ivan Rodriguez could land somewhere soon. The Orioles feel protected with Ronny Paulino if Taylor Teagarden’s back issues persist, but Cafardo writes that Paulino never seems to endear himself wherever he goes. The Royals are on the lookout for catching help due to Salvador Perez’s injury but rather solve that problem from within. Yesterday we heard that the Royals extended a camp invite to Pudge which was not accepted but the club later denied the report.
6. Johnny Damon, LF/DH, free agent – Cleveland is wading through left fielders to find a fit, and they could wind up with Damon. While the Orioles keep indicating they won’t sign Damon, their lineup keeps screaming his name.

As a Yankees fan I have to say I hope Miller does make the Red Sox rotation. For the most part when he pitched last year he looked god awful. And he’s another pitcher who over the last 3 years has never pitched more then 80 innings. And in the last 2 years 32 and 65 inning respectively.
MaineSox
If Miller makes the rotation it will be because he is pitching better than Aceves, Doubront, Cook, and Padilla so it wouldn’t really be a good thing for Yankee fans because Miller has, by far, the most upside of the group.
UltimateYankeeFan
A lot of players have “upside” that they never reach. Besides having more upside then the group I mentioned might not be saying a whole lot.
I’m not really sure what makes you think Miller has a lot of upside or anymore then those other players. He’s never had a WHIP below 1.60 Only pitched more than 80 innings once in the last 5 years (2008). His ERA+ the last 2 years was 49 and 77 respectively and his K to BB ration is pretty sad.
So unless you mean by upside that he can’t get much worse, I just don’t see it.

There has been a collection of nice stories on him that as a Yankee fan probably never bothered reading of late..
Miller has had like half a dozen pitching coaches in his short career, the very 1st thing they did when he was drafted was to stop him from throwing across his body, the way he was successful all along.
he has said ever since going to Boston that detroit and Florida did nothing but change his mechanics, even with florida i can recall in ’09 watching a couple of his starts where his FB was LUCKY to hit 90-91 his mechanics were so wiped out, couldn’t repeat anything and now? he says everything, since last May is starting to come together.
he is going fully back to the NC mechanics now, which he was working in small steps to as of last season.
No.. There is a load of talent in Miller and even if he never does harness it, they lost nothing in letting him try what worked for him to make him one of the best pitchers in the nation not long ago.
The rest of the league may not like the results, then that is a different story.
MaineSox
Miller has the “stuff” of a #1-2 starter; if he could ever get his command under control he could dominate, so if they feel he is pitching better than those other guys (who have all pitched well this spring) then it could be a very bad thing for the Yankees.
Most likely that never happens, and most likely Miller is not their #5 starter, but they have multiple legitimate #4-5 starter options, so they would have to feel that he is pitching at a level higher than that to give him the job, so if he does get the job it would likely be a bad thing for the Yankees.
start_wearing_purple
I don’t think the issue is with Miller’s command/control. I think it’s all about his head. He can throw some incredibly nasty stuff and then completely fall to pieces and walk the bases loaded after not getting a borderline call.
At this point I think his best bet is in the pen.
MaineSox
I agree that his best bet is in the ‘pen, but I don’t really agree that his problem is all about his head. He’s 6’7″ and it’s really common for especially tall guys to have a problem with their mechanics, and repeating their delivery, which from what I’ve read is the case with Miller. SoxProspects’ scouting report on him says “Former top prospect has struggled with mechanical and control issues throughout his career,” and in their ‘The Book’ they said “Much of Miller’s command issues stem from trouble repeating his delivery and finding a consistent arm slot.”
User 4245925809
It’s almost to a point where grow tired of even mentioning all the issues Miller has had and constant changes various coaches have made to him.
I can’t recall what the tigers did to him change wise, but with the fish, I sure do as watch most of there games as HE was the important piece in the Cabrera deal.
Miller seemed to have some odd, totally different stance each time they called him up and like you wrote. His delivery was totally wacked up. he just couldn’t repeat it. I saw him fall off of the mound one time and this is not one of those people with a wild delivery either, or he wasn’t IMO. Coaches just thought he shouldn’t throw across his body for the most part and started changing his mechanics and then when that didn’t work? Started changing every thing else. Where he stood on the rubber..
If anything is wrong with his head..IMO..it is from having those half a dozen pitching coaches trying to get him to do something that didn’t work, from what he did at his UNC days when he was the most coveted pitcher in the nation.
rpoabr
Need to lock up Aybar ASAP. He is just really coming into his prime and finally will have some better bats around him in general. I would make sure there is NOT a no trade clause just in case Jean Segura goes nuts.
Normally i’d be more in favor of trusting that the prospect is going to be good and saving the money, but this is the Angels window to win some WS!
Encarnacion's Parrot
I was typing out a long comment on how the Jays should look to keep Cecil since he’s cheap and controllable, but then I looked up his career stats.
BlueJayMatt
He would make a decent #4/5 anywhre but the AL East. If Toronto can trade him early enough to take advantage of the extra value his years of control give then he could be worth something as part of a larger package.
ice_hawk1002
i agree. he could be decent, but hes just going to get swallowed by the pool of prospects behind him.
Lunchbox45
He’ll either be traded or a loogy within a year.
vilifyingforce
If they really have fixed his approach to righties he’ll be a decent back end guy. I’d take him over Perez as a loogy though.
Lunchbox45
agreed, although perez does have a pretty decent fastball for a lefty

Cecil, the guy with the O.00 era going into todays game??
ellisburks
In spring training.
LUWahooNatFan
Doesn’t make too much sense to trade a starter now with Wang’s injury and Strasburg being on an innings limit.
User 4245925809
With Wang now, it’s just what kind of injury is he going to have from one season to the next ever since he got hurt running the bases in Interleague play several years back. he hasn’t been healthy yet and it’s not just been his wheels either, but everything else.
A shame too, cause they guy could (when NY had him at least) throw low-mid 90’s and everything went like straight down, high ground ball rates, he was very effective.

I have to wonder how Damon would be a ‘great fit’ for the O’s lineup when they already have a glut of DH candidates. Betemit, Davis, and Johnson are already candidates, with only one of them being able to fill the 1B slot. I wonder if the O’s are supposed to replace younger people who are capable of playing defense (even if Betemit can only play it badly) with an over the hill player who can’t play defense at all.
mstrchef13
If Damon played to his ideal expectations as a 37 year old with declining stats and no ability to play defense, he would not be a better value than Nick Johnson, who is showing that he is pain free and regaining his old stroke. Johnson has shown he hasn’t lost any of his above-average defense or his exceptional strike zone awareness, and even if his power doesn’t come back and he’s only a 10 HR, 35 doubles player right now, he’s a better player than Damon at about 20% of the price. In fact, right now he’s making it difficult to justify keeping him off the roster and keeping Betemit on it. Perhaps the Phillies would be interested in him instead of Aviles as a 2B/3B guy.
Michael Buffie
I think a little more research needs to be done on the statement that Cecil hasn’t had a particularly good spring… he has yet to allow a run what else does a guy have to do to have a good spring…
Encarnacion's Parrot
Pitch to MLB batters.
Michael Buffie
He is pitching against starters…
duddy_17
but he wears glasses… forget youth… the fact that he really has had a successful spring… his previous success against AL East teams (2010 he was stellar)… Yes, it’s been an awful spring as his ocular probelms persist.
Lunchbox45
2010 he was stellar?
The only difference between him in 2010 and 2011 was run support
vilifyingforce
And his babip even dropped 24 points.

cecil seems to be having an alright spring..no runs in 6 ip..
duddy_17
Well, to be fair [sic] he did give one up today… 1 run over 10 innings… era almost a full point over zero now… Heck, they might just have to release him!
Lunchbox45
his fastball is coming in at 86-88.. not really AL east material
Abid Khalid
i agree we’ll need a better pitcher than him, but my point was about the “hasn’t had an especially good spring.” Didn’t really know what that was based on..
ellisburks
Maybe they should have said he is having a lucky spring. The results are there but his pitching is not where they want it because of the velocity that Lunch mentioned.

I’d take Aviles in a hot second. I’m sure the Sox would want Blanton in the deal which they can most certainly have. Aviles would be a great upgrade over Michael Martinez who’s lack of baseball intelligence bugs the hell out of me.
Lefty
One Tribe exec shot down that idea yesterday, saying that Damon’s lackluster defense kills any interest they might have. While the Orioles keep indicating they won’t sign Damon, the veteran would be a great fit for their lineup.
Grady Sizemore can’t stay healthy and Felix Pie could never get himself together and yet this Tribe Exec thinks Damon’s defensive skills stink and they do, I just don’t understand the rationale completely because the Indian defense isn’t all that great to begin, so as far as I am concerned Damon would fit right in “Tribe Country”
As for the Orioles signing Johnny Damon, I would love to know why “Old Man” Damon would fit right in? The Orioles weren’t interested in Cody Ross or Norichika Aoki because one of the many reason that heard was that either of those two players weren’t seen as upgrades. I strongly disagreed with that sentiment. The bottom line is if neither of those two players weren’t upgrades, how in the world is Johnny Damon?!?
To end on a positive note, I am glad you and Cafardo brought up Ronny Paulino!
From what I have heard and read Ol Ronny has done a good job. He sounds like he knows what he is doing defensively and he knows how to call a game. Tatum, our back-up the last two seasons did not, at least IMHO, he didn’t. The point I am trying to make is that if Paulino continues to do what he is doing and keeps his attitude in check, he might be the best signing that Duquette made this spring!
mstrchef13
Lefty:
You and I both know that the best signing Duquette made this offseason was Rick Peterson.
User 4245925809
Paulino also was suspended 50 games for juicing while with the Fish. Don’t really remember anything else he did that was bad.
Diablo 2
Got to lock up Aybar,JeDi. I won’t be happy if he leaves and signs with BoSox.
User 4245925809
That was cafardo’s Shaugnessy impersonation for the week. Can’t see Boston throwing major dollars at another SS like they did at Lugo, Renteria etc.. It’s not worth it and they already moved Lowrie.
The team is deep with middle IP prospects beside Iglesias and they have Aviles already as a fair place setter. The team is much more a bet to spend on pitching than another crap shot along the lines of the 2 busts they have signed to big dollars already the last 10 seasons to play SS.
vilifyingforce
Marco Scutaro says hello. 🙂
jhd5787
I am still confused why they dumped Scutaro. He played thru injury last year and was not a complete empty uniform. Defense wasnt bad, wasn’t great, but from what I hear neither is Aviles.
vilifyingforce
It was so they could sign Roy Oswalt I do believe.
