DJ Carrasco can’t keep a job.
rfffr
I could see an attempt to resign him. So I guess the Zach Duke deal went down or they’re waiting till Midnight.

It would have been more pithy to say that he cannot “hold” a job. You know, since he had seven holds last year. The redheaded stepchild of middle relief stats.

Dave_Gershman
Surprisingly so.
Theres always one surprise…The Non-tenders have pretty much barely started (there are going to be a ton more) but the first hand surprise is Sammy Gervacio…I want to see the Royals sign him.
junior ballbag
I was non-tendered last week from rookie ball. I couldn’t believe it. To think they would do that to a 38 year old veteran rookie ball crusher.

DJ come back to the south side.

I just don’t understand why you would nontender someone like Carrasco especially the Dbacks. Here is a guy who is effective in the bullpen and give you a decent spot start every now and then.
And they let him go for nothing?!
Cameron Nelson
This IS the Diamondbacks we’re talking about here.

So they decide to nontender Boyer instead?
Still not a good move IMO.
Gumby65
Padres non-tendering somebody named Tony Gwynn is like not calling your mom on Mother’s Day.
Infield Fly
While the Gwynn name is a sentimental favorite, the player himself…well…let’s just say he’s not all that much like his father. Besides memories he brings little more to the table than his glove. I don’t know that you can expect a team to keep someone like that on the roster indefinitely, but maybe this is an experiment to see how the fans respond. If there’s an outright mutiny the Padres can always re-sign him.
Bill
Pitching and defense damn near got the Friars into the post season. Given how far the Giants went with that formula, I would be hesitant to minimize a good glove. Especially one in Petco.
Infield Fly
No minimizing about it (particularly on the part of someone who LOOOOVES the D’). It’s just conjecture, so don’t misconstrue things.
Looking at things at another way, from last season to this, the Giants decided they needed a little more in the offense department, and made sure they got it before the trade deadline. That seems to be part of how they got past you guys in the end. So perhaps cutting a sentimental favorite to make room for a difference-making bat could be a helpful thing for you guys, going forward.
Slopeboy
I think Dad would still outhit son.
jimboslice9
Considering Gwynn says he couldn’t come back now because he can’t run, but he can still hit just as well as he did on the tail end of his career, I’d say his son isn’t the only player he could outhit at this point.

mlbscout6
I think Gwynn would be a nice pickup for the Marlins. They need someone with speed and good defense to patrol that large outfield. Sure his hitting is weak, but anything is better then watching Cameron Maybin and his atrocious defense.
Infield Fly
Ironically, one of Maybin’s catches made the “Best Defensive Plays of 2010,” on the MLB Network. Based on your assessment that must’ve been an “off” day for him. š
mlbscout6
The problem with judging a players defense on an instant replay is you don’t get to see the whole play. Maybin gets terrible jumps on the ball and will often run in on a ball hit over his head. So while he may make the occaisional diving catch, most of those plays he shouldnt have had to dive for in the first place. And the ones that he doesnt catch up to turn into doubles and triples.
Infield Fly
Ugh! Sounds a lot like Eric Byrnes (and others) — taking an indirect route to a ball so that it practically requires a dive in order to finally make the play. In Maybin’s case it sounds like this is due to a lack of skill. However Byrnes was a fake showboater. I sure don’t miss watching him in the field!
mlbscout6
If there is one thing Maybin is not it’s a showboater. He is a nice, humble guy and a great athlete, but unfortunately has very poor baseball instincts. I really hope someone can teach him but I have a feeling that his poor instincts in the field and poor pitch recognition at the plate will be thing that gets him benched or sent down halfway through the season
grabarkewitz
Byrnes was awful in the outfield. I never saw a guy misplay more balls than he did and not get called on it by any announce team.
Joe Garcia
Lol but his show was cool lol:)
Sleepykarl
See Jacoby Ellsbury especially in 2009
Jake Humphrey
Dan Uggla is still listed as a Marlin in non-tender tracker. Just figured I’d point that out.
padreshobo
Gwynn was a nice defensive sub. I also enjoyed his inside the park home runs. But outside of late inning defense and those two plays he was less than memorable to me. I think the only fans that will be heartbroken will be the same fans that show up to season ticket holder meetings and ask when we are going to get our big bat, when are we resigning Adrian, or when we are going to have a payroll above $100 million.
rfffr
Don’t forget his hit as the brewers which knocked the Padres out of the playoffs in 07

ugotrpk3113
I would LOVE to see Diaz play for the Sox. It would be nice to have a traditionally good bat against LHP in the AL East with all those lefties (to platoon with either Ortiz or Drew)
rfffr
So Carrasco isn’t listed anyone. Maybe he was tendered.
Brandon
yeah what happened with that? can they non tender him then just say oh just kidding we want you? haha
rfffr
So he was nontendered it seems.
Paradise17
Kevin Towers should be all over Sammy Gervacio….25 yrs old, cheap and could be a closer one day with electric stuff.
Brandon
Yeah I agree, if we can add him, Putz and one more back end type of guy our bullpen will be pretty nice looking.
grabarkewitz
And one of the best windups in the game.
oremlk
He went down with a shoulder injury early last season and didn’t pitch again. I’m not sure whether he had surgery, I forget, but shoulder injuries are the most frequent causes of early career ends for pitchers. TJ surgery is no big deal (relatively speaking) by comparison.
Sage
Kevin Towers should be all over Luis Perdomo. Another young guy, Padres just non-tendered him. Did Towers have Perdomo when he was in SD? That would make it even more likely, I’d think.
padresfuture
Perdomo is ok. He is middle relief on most teams, could be an ok 7th inning guy on a weak bullpen like the D’backs. Would be a good pick up for them.
HerbertAnchovy
Guess it’s not Coffey time now.
Michael C
By the Way Gervacio has been injured and that is why he was non-tendered
Dave_Gershman
I knew it! I Called the Veras non-tendering. The Marlins pen is just so packed now. Badenhop doesn’t have a spot.
marlinsfanatic
Bro the hopper is long relief he is staying on the team.
Dave_Gershman
I realize that, but there’s no room for him.
Webb/Nunez/Hensley/Mujica/Richardson/Sanches/Dunn. Where does the Hooper fit in?
marlinsfanatic
Richardson is not ensured a spot at all he is andrew miller junior. If you take him out of your projected bullpen we would only have six reliecvers, marlins carry around 10 just saying.
marlinsfanatic
Ceda cishek marines and jennings will all get looks and the hopper will definitely be in the pen.
Dave_Gershman
They don’t carry 10. I’d they did, that would make 5 starters in the rotation = 15, plus only 10 position players? Come on dude. Every teams pen has 7 relievers.
Dylan
Diaz will be in a Philly uniform next year.
Sage
Okay, I understand getting rid of Coffey (although, now we’ve lost all of our reliever entrance entertainment). But Inglett? He was the best pinch-hitter in the league last season. Why would we non-tender him?
Flharfh
The only reason I can think is that he was injured on and off and didn’t play very good defense. Kind of handicaps your bench when you have a guy who can pinch-hit but does little else.
Sage
That is a good point. It also occurs to me, he is already 32, and this would open up a spot to keep Mat Gamel on the roster.
Brian H.
Pirates close to signing Karstens, just like Neal told me earlier tonight…they were gonna sign some guys to avoid arb
grabarkewitz
Aside from Diaz, not much to get excited about, yet.
oremlk
I didn’t think Sammy Gervacio was arbitration-eligible and even if so I’m surprised to see him non-tendered. Unless his shoulder injury was just career-ending and he’s basically done now.
Ricky
Did Mets make official tender announcements?
Richie Ax
Best Closer in baseball history , next the best pound for pound player in baseball The Captain Derek Jeter.

Brian H.
Awesome, Milledge’s WAR was -1.2…they can get a much better player for his money than him
gornie
and milledge probably hits the free agent market and nails a couple mil salary for 2012. gotta admit, there a few teams who will want further proof that he’s not as bad as he’s been.
Joe Garcia
Really Carrasco non tender, i think this guy was the best pitcher in our pen…ohhh crap
Ian_Smell
I’m sad to see Milledge leave. We had the same birthday and now his shirt that I own is obsolete.
jwsox
wow russel was non tendered….
look for Kenny Williams to be all over Sherril and Carrasco(again)
First L
Russell Martin has left the building.
Bye Bye Baby Bonanza
I’m glad the Giants kept Fontenot.
blackandorangepride
I’m glad we non-tendered Velez the dude was a horrible lead-off man and base-runner. He swung at the first pitch all the time.
Bye Bye Baby Bonanza
Some Giants news from Mychael Urban on twitter. Love Urban’s twitter page
twitter.com/MUrbanCSN
Sabean wants more left handed hitters in the lineup, also mentioning Brandon Belt’s potential impact.
Sabean sounded enthusiastic about bringing Renteria back as backup shortstop.

:'( Chris Carter…what a waste of that Billy Wagner trade…
start_wearing_purple
Dear Omar Minaya, thanks for helping the Sox draft Vitek and Ranaudo.
Jay
At the end of the day the Mets would have not offered Wagner arbitration anyway

Dont blame Omar people it was the Wilpons because they do not want to spend on the draft
Jay
The rumor is the Mets offered Jeff Francis a major league contract. What do you guys think
KeithLawSucksInStl
I’d say it’s not the worst idea the Mets GM has had in a few years…
Which isn’t saying much.
MetsEventually
Medium Risk, Medium Reward. Much rather have Chris Young. Give Gee and Misch some chances.

My dreams of seeing Ludwick back in a Cards uniform are gone… At least we got a good deal with Westbrook.
Jay
Well Francis is another injured pitcher so i say no way.
YanksFanSince78
The Yanks have zero depth in the OF and even less in the upper minors. I would love for them to go after Milledge. Defensively he’s average to slightly below defensively but he can mash against lefties and can play all 3 OF spots but only the corners at a passable level. Obviously with Gardner and Grandy he wouldn’t see time in CF unless it’s an emergency.
He was an 0.3 UZR in LF and a -1 in RF.
Career wise he hits lefties at a .293/.361/.459 clip. In 2010 he hit .324/.404/.493 vs lefties.
With Grandy and Gardner both lefties he might be a good pickup in case Grandy regresses. Also, maybe Kevin Long can work with him and make him a better all around hitter. He has youth on his side and if anyone went down between our 3 regulars then we’re stuck with Goslon and Brandon Laird who is a career 3B/1B up until this year as our most likely fill ins.
Tony P.
Can someone please tell me how the hell Russel Martin got non-tendered. The guy was one of the best catchers in the league for several years and all of a sudden he’s not good enough to get arbitration? I know he was injured last year but damn…
BobbyJohn
Martin made just over $5 million in 2010. Under the current bargaining agreement a player cannot have his salary reduced by more than 20% via arbitration, so the lowest dollar amount he would have received from the Dodgers in 2011 going that route would have been right at $4 million.
They can still bring him back, but they gave themselves a shot at doing it at a number that more accurately reflects his real value.
BobbyJohn
Rockies trade for Jose Lopez then tender him. Gonna be interesting to see how this one pans out.
O’Dowd did pretty much what was expected, tendering all the eligibles except Delcarmen.
R.D.
Dear Braves, SIGN MILLEDGE.
Sooo much upside and speed.
I’ll be interested to see where Martin, Wang, Maine, and Carter end up. I don’t seem to recall a non-tendered group this interesting in a while.
Josh S
Dear San Francisco Giants,
Thanks for winning the World Series. Now further fortify your already loaded bullpen by signing Joel Peralta. He had an awesome year, and his fly ball/ home run problems will be mitigated by pitching half his games at AT & T which is a relatively neutral to slightly pitcher favorable home ballpark. Thanks.
