The Rockies declined their 2011 option for Octavio Dotel, according to the AP (via the Miami Herald). The club will pay the righty a $250K buyout instead of a $4.5MM salary.
Dotel split the 2010 season between the Pirates, Dodgers and Rockies. He posted an overall ERA of 4.08 with 10.5 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9 in 68 appearances. Dotel is a Type B free agent, so the Rockies could technically obtain a compensation pick if they offer arbitration and the 36-year-old turns it down to sign elsewhere.

I still can’t believe the Pirates got McDonald and Lambo for him. Thanks Dodgers.

Absolutely ridiculous haul for the likes of Octavio Dotel.

Worst trade of the year. At least for the Dodgers…

Offer him arb and collect the draft pick (especially since he’s not Type A). We still don’t know who the PTBNL the Dodgers get (ultimately their consolation prize for McDonald/Lambo) will be, but yeah.

At this point in his career, it’d be hard to imagine him turning down arb, no?

By most accounts the Dodgers were tired of Lambo’s attitude and PED suspension. But throwing in McDonald in the deal surprised me. I would have thought the Dodgers could have traded Lambo and a much weaker pitcher for Dotel. McDonald projects as a No. 4 or 5 starter with an era in the low 4s. Not a future star, but not moldy cheese either.
