The Cardinals are next in our arbitration eligibles series…
- First time: Kyle McClellan, Brendan Ryan
- Second time: None
- Third time: None
The Cardinals have one of MLB's smallest arbitration classes this year with first-timers McClellan and Ryan. Both should be tendered contracts and neither will be expensive. Ryan was abysmal with the bat this year, but he could win a Gold Glove.
Craig Cutler
He better win the gold glove. There was NO ONE better with the glove this year or arm than Ryan.
BlueCatuli
Tulo?
Ferrariman
not even tulo. Ryan was unworldy, Tulo was good and he will probably win it because he has more notoriety, but Ryan was hands down the best defensive shortstop this season.
BlueCatuli
I watch a lot of Cards baseball. He can flash the leather for sure, but he boots a lot of routine plays. I think Tulo was consistently better at the position.
CJ Montiel
Wasn’t Jaime Garcia supposed to be eligable for arbitration? Did he miss the cut since they sat him for the last few weeks of the year?
Jake Humphrey
Not unless he qualified for Super 2 status. He only had a little over a year of service time coming into the 2010 season.
CJ Montiel
MLBTR had him scheduled to be arbitration eligable for the first time on their 2011 Contract Issues series…
Weird…
Tim Dierkes
Yeah I talked to Jeff Euston of Cot’s back then and he confirmed that the Cards’ media guide suggests he would be Super Two after this season. However we think there was an error in the guide as to his service time. So, I don’t think he’s arb-eligible.
akbled
No, Garcia only had about 2 weeks of service time coming into the year. He’s now at 1.147 according to Cot’s
Jake Humphrey
Ah, my bad. I incorrectly assumed that they hadn’t updated yet.
akbled
No my bad, you’re correct it doesn’t look like that has been updated yet, they still show Rasmus as only 1 year of service time, same with Motte and the lot. I guess because of Garcia’s time on the DL he was able to accrue service time despite being optioned prior to surgery?

If Ryan could hit .245 with an .330 obp i’d be happy!
nycardinalfan
and if my aunt had balls she’d be my uncle! Ryan was so bad offensively I dont care if he made every single play!! We can not have him with shumacker and molina and whoever is in RF and 3B and have a major league productive offense!
We need to upgrade big time offensively in our middle infield!
Lanidrac
A middle infield upgrade to platoon with the others would be nice, especially with some power, but don’t forget that Schumaker and Molina have track records as .290+ hitters, and this was only Ryan’s first full season as a starter after earning the job midseason in 2009 when he hit about .290 for that season. Unfortunately, Ryan won’t win the gold glove this year, because there is always offensive performance bias in the voting.
