The Tigers now have Perry, Schlereth, Ruffin… a lot of highly drafted closers, along with all their other power arms who might hit the pen, like Oliver. Could be a frightening bullpen in a couple of years. Overcompensating for the past a little, maybe?

im not feeling the supplemental picks for the sox, the first one doesnt show any one outstanding skill and the other has problems with command from a recent injury, why risk the early picks?
bucs_lose_again
I’m always jealous of the Sox’s drafts. Both guys were much higher on most boards at the beginning of the year, but due to injuries and/ or performance issues, fell significantly. They both could bring massive rewards.
jwredsox
I’m happy for the Bucs in taking Tallion. they need that upside pitcher who could be an ace.
start_wearing_purple
The Sox always seem to take high risk/high reward in supplemental and second round picks. Third to fifth round is usually when they get their better names. But I rather like their picks, at least from my limited knowledge of the players. Brentz has good potential power and the Sox don’t have a lot of power bats in the minors. As for Ranaudo, well some scouts see him as a future front line pitcher. The issues are injuries and Boras. He’ll cost a lot, but could be worth it.

that being said, i dont know much about them myself other from what i have been reading now. of course they bring a risk/reward angle, but i just find it to risk it so early in the draft. theo hardly ever screws up in the draft though so its safe to say he sees something he likes
start_wearing_purple
Considering Theo has presided over drafts that have produced Jonathan Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz, Daniel Bard, and ultimately given the Red Sox one of the strongest farms in the MLB, I tend to trust him completely during the draft.

What would be the rationale for Boston playing it safe? They’ve had success in the lower first/supplemental rounds and it’s an organization that can afford to make so-called mistakes.
jwredsox
As a sox fan I love the picks. Ranuado never got back into things after his forearm injury (notice not elbow) and most of the drop had to do with sign-ability. That could be a real steal in the first round of the draft. And Brentz is the power guy they need in the lower minor leagues.
04Forever
yeah but a first round pick so the minor team can have a power hitter?
jwredsox
no, He was actually high on some teams draft boards until he hurt his ankle (flukish injury imo). It isn’t a reach for him at 36 it was more of a steal. I was reading the fanboards on ESPN and some people wanted him in the non supplementary rounds.
jwredsox
btw I just want accentuate, not the elbow.
Plus entering the year (before Harper entered the draft) He was seen as the #1 overall pick. There were worse picks that could have been made at that spot. And Ranaudo finally got his velocity back his last start and showed improvement.
04Forever
lol not the elbow i got ya. im sure it will be fine, its just surprised me that they would risk it that early i guess, they seem very talented now that im looking them up
jwredsox
He his. And I doubt he would have been there in the second round. Also MLB . com videos have good scouting reports on all the players

They also have brandon jacobs who should be starting play soon at 1/2 season lowell and was another bonus baby last year, drafted in the 9th round and given like 900K to pry away from Auburn as a FB for the football team think it was as power hitter and Lavarnway. Other than those 2.. That’s really about it for real power hitters in the Sox system.
start_wearing_purple
Well there’s Anderson but his power seems to have disappeared and there’s Rizzo.
aap212
I’m not a Sox fan, but you should be happy. Lots of upside, guys who could have been drafted much, much higher.
ReverendBlack
Really silly bro. The Sox seem to specialize in feeling out the market last-minute and jumping in on undervalued guys. All of these picks could have gone much higher if not for small details that scared other teams away. If you think these small things weren’t rigorously investigated by the Sox staff, you’re silly.
Only time will tell, but for now, it’s an extremely solid draft.
Kamran
The Sox made amazing picks in the supplemental round. Brentz and Ranaudo? I don’t think anyone can hate on that.
ReverendBlack
Nicely done indeed.
nymets4581
I’m surprised that Stetson Allie and AJ Cole weren’t picked today. Also, I’m somewhat disappointed that the Mets picked Matt Harvey over Chris Sale, but maybe it will turn out for the better.
BeatEmBucs
So who is the best available going into tomorrow? I admittedly don’t know much after the first several prospects who were drafted.
start_wearing_purple
Yeah, I knew Harper and that’s it. I get excited about the draft, but I won’t pretend to know anything about who gets drafted until I read the scouting reports after.
But here’s an article on who’s left: mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100608&con…
ReverendBlack
Frankly it’s the second-round on that I love about the draft so much precisely because there are so many question marks. Really separates the men from the boys in terms of scouting departments.
