Alan Embree – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Fri, 23 Jul 2010 18:43:20 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Giants Eyeing Will Ohman? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/giants-eyeing-will-ohman.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/giants-eyeing-will-ohman.html#comments Fri, 23 Jul 2010 18:43:20 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/07/giants-eyeing-will-ohman.html The Giants' search for another hitter has been well documented, but the team could be targeting more than just a bat. San Francisco is also looking into the possibility of acquiring Will Ohman, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Brian Sabean told listeners on his KNBR radio show Thursday that the team could use an experienced left-handed reliever, and Ohman fits the bill. Although the southpaw has had some control issues this year (5.1 BB/9), he has recorded a 2.57 ERA and struck out a batter per inning. He has also handled lefties well, holding them to a .531 OPS for the season.

If they don't acquire Ohman, the Giants could have a hard time finding another satisfactory left-handed arm for their bullpen. An already underwhelming relief market looks even more uninspiring when you consider the lack of lefties on the list. Besides Ohman and Scott Downs, whose price tag may be too high for the Giants, potentially available southpaws include Bruce Chen, Alan Embree, and Scott Schoeneweis.

White Sox Release Alan Embree https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/white-sox-release-alan-embree.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/white-sox-release-alan-embree.html#comments Fri, 28 May 2010 13:28:47 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/white-sox-release-alan-embree.html The White Sox released Alan Embree, who had been pitching at Triple A, according to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter). The White Sox signed Embree earlier in the month, after the lefty elected free agency. He pitched in the majors and the minors for the Red Sox this year before his stint in the White Sox organization.

The 40-year-old struggled at Triple A Charlotte, allowing 11 hits and five walks in 7.1 innings, though he did strike ten batters out. If any teams have interest in Embree, it would presumably be on a minor league deal. The D'Backs have no left-handed pitchers on their staff and their bullpen has combined for a 7.42 ERA.

Embree, 40, tossed 7.3 innings for Boston's Triple A club this year.  In 2009, he posted a 5.84 ERA in 24.6 innings for the Rockies before a July line drive from Martin Prado fractured his tibia.  Chicago's pen currently has Matt Thornton and Randy Williams coming from the left side.  It's only a seven-inning sample, but Williams has struggled against left-handed hitters this year.

Alan Embree Elects Free Agency https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/red-sox-designate-embree-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/red-sox-designate-embree-for-assignment.html#respond Wed, 05 May 2010 18:24:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/red-sox-designate-embree-for-assignment.html WEDNESDAY, 6:24pm: Embree cleared waivers and has elected to become a free agent, tweets Alex Speier of WEEI.com.

FRIDAY, 10:23pm: The Red Sox designated lefty reliever Alan Embree for assignment, tweets Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com.  Boston DFA'd the 40-year-old in order to make room for the returning Daisuke Matsuzaka.  Embree did not appear in a major league game for Boston this season.

Embree was allowed to opt out of his minor league deal with the BoSox on April 15th, as he had not yet been promoted to the majors.  He agreed to extend his deal for another two weeks and was called up ten days later.  The contract was set to pay the lefty $500K for making the major league squad, a sum that could have ballooned to as much as $1.1MM with incentives.

Roughly two weeks ago, the veteran reliever stated that he would "go home" if he wasn't on the varsity squad in Boston or presented with another enticing opportunity.  Embree told Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald that he will now return home to talk to his agent to see if another team might be interested in his services.  Lauber points out that the Phillies were interested at one point, though it's unclear if they still have a spot for him.

Red Sox Call Up Alan Embree https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/red-sox-call-up-alan-embree.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/red-sox-call-up-alan-embree.html#comments Tue, 27 Apr 2010 21:22:08 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/red-sox-call-up-alan-embree.html The Red Sox have called up lefty reliever Alan Embree from Triple-A, tweets Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald. Embree would have been able to opt out of his minor league contract on April 30th if he had not been called up by then.

The 40-year-old Embree was originally able to opt out of his deal on April 15th, but he agreed to push it back another two weeks. Embree allowed two runs in 7.1 Triple-A innings, but he held lefties to just one walk in 4.1 innings against them.

Boston will need to make a 40-man roster move to accommodate Embree's arrival.

Embree Doesn’t Opt Out Of Red Sox Contract https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/embree-doesnt-opt-out-of-red-sox-contract.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/embree-doesnt-opt-out-of-red-sox-contract.html#comments Sat, 17 Apr 2010 15:17:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/embree-doesnt-opt-out-of-red-sox-contract.html SATURDAY, 3:17pm: Embree has agreed to push his opt-out date back from April 15th to April 30th, a team source tells Rob Bradford of WEEI.  If the 40-year-old is not on the 25-man roster by that date, he is eligible to become a free agent.

The lefty reliever told Pawtucket Red Sox broadcaster Dan Hoard that he will "go home" if he is not promoted by the Red Sox or presented with another enticing opportunity.  Under his minor league deal with Boston, Embree can earn up to $1.1MM if he is brought up to the big show.

Embree had appeared in more than 60 games for ten straight seasons before a freak injury ended his 2009 campaign prematurely.  He has been less-than-stellar with Pawtucket, though 3.1 innings is hardly a fair sample size.

THURSDAY, 9:43pm: Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe reports (via Twitter) that LHP Alan Embree won't yet exercise the opt-out clause in his Red Sox contract.  Embree was eligible to opt out as of today since he isn't on the major league roster.  WEEI's Alex Speier adds that Embree will spend "a few more weeks" in Triple-A Pawtucket before deciding his next move.

The 40-year-old reliever didn't sign with Boston until March 21, so it's likely he's using his time in the minors as an extended spring training to work himself into proper game shape.  Delaying the opt-out clause also gives Embree more time for agent Chris Leible to search the market for a new contract.  Embree could join these relievers as possible pick-ups for a team in need of bullpen help.

Red Sox Sign Alan Embree https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/red-sox-sign-alan-embree.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/red-sox-sign-alan-embree.html#comments Sun, 21 Mar 2010 12:59:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/red-sox-sign-alan-embree.html The Red Sox signed reliever Alan Embree to a minor league deal that could pay the lefty about $1.1MM if he makes the major league roster and reaches his incentives for games pitched. Embree will earn $500K for making the big league club, and he'll have the chance to opt out of his contract on April 15th to reassess his situation. This marks Embree's second stint with the team, as he joined the Red Sox in a 2002 trade and pitched for them until his '05 release.

Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe added the opt-out details; Alex Speier of WEEI.com added the salary Embree will earn if he's on the major league roster and Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston added specifics about the incentives (Twitter links).

Embree, 40, posted a 5.84 ERA, 4.4 K/9, and 4.4 BB/9 in 24.6 innings for the Rockies last year. His season ended in July when a line drive fractured his tibia. Checking Embree's FanGraphs splits, his recent work against lefties has been spotty.

The Sox already have lefty relievers Hideki Okajima and Fabio Castro on the 40-man roster and Brian Shouse in camp on a non-roster invite.

The Latest On The Remaining Free Agent Relievers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/the-relievers.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/the-relievers.html#comments Fri, 12 Mar 2010 12:03:51 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/the-relievers.html The Cubs and Twins have seen top relievers get hurt this spring and already both clubs are interested in relievers (specifically Jason Frasor). Don't expect Jim Hendry to sign one of the free agent options remaining; the Cubs are reportedly uninterested in that group. But as more pitchers get injured, some of the free agents will gain appeal. Here's a look at the remaining relievers who have attracted at least some interest this offseason.

Stark On Damon, Bedard, Phillies, Smoltz, Gregg https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/01/stark-on-damon-bedard-phillies-smoltz-gregg.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/01/stark-on-damon-bedard-phillies-smoltz-gregg.html#comments Fri, 29 Jan 2010 14:34:52 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/01/stark-on-damon-bedard-phillies-smoltz-gregg.html Jayson Stark of ESPN.com points out that teams aren't handing out long-term contracts as liberally as they were a few years ago. We've seen just eight contracts of three-plus years this offseason, after seeing 13 such contracts in each of the previous two winters. The offseason before that? Players signed 29 contracts of three years or more. Here are Stark's rumors:

  • Detroit doesn't seem that interested in Johnny Damon and the Braves haven't spoken with Damon's agent, Scott Boras, in a month and a half. The Rays have checked in, but they have little to spend.
  • Erik Bedard and the Orioles have mutual interest in a reunion, Stark hears.
  • The Phillies would like to add a veteran left-handed reliever on a minor league deal, but Alan Embree and Ron Mahay are holding out for big league deals at this point, despite the Phillies' interest.
  • Kevin Gregg is high on the Rockies' shopping list. They're looking at infield options and hoping to save enough money to shore up their bullpen, too.
  • The Blue Jays have told clubs that Scott Downs and Jason Frasor are available. The Cubs have checked in on the pair of relievers.
  • The Royals have told teams they're "open minded" about moving Gil Meche or Brian Bannister.
  • John Smoltz is in no rush to sign. He's open to waiting for a few months, since he'd like a starting job and some execs question his ability to start for an entire season.
  • Ben Sheets will be the first A's pitcher to make $10MM (though some believe Sheets will be traded before the end of the year).
  • Mark Prior is throwing off a mound and would like to make a comeback.

Rockies Decline Options For Torrealba, Embree https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/rockies-decline-options-for-torrealbaembree.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/rockies-decline-options-for-torrealbaembree.html#respond Fri, 06 Nov 2009 19:25:14 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/11/rockies-decline-options-for-torrealbaembree.html Troy Renck of The Denver Post reports that the Rockies have declined the 2010 options for catcher Yorvit Torrealba and reliever Alan Embree. Torrealba's option was worth $4MM, Embree's $3MM. Instead, the players will receive buyouts worth $500K and $250K, respectively.

Torrealba's agent indicated that his client has not ruled out returning to the club, but the Rockies are committed to Chris Iannetta as their starter. Yorvit hit .291/.351/.380 in 242 plate appearances on the year, while Embree threw just 24.2 innings in 2009 before a liner broke his leg and forced him to miss the rest of the season.
