Wilkin Ramirez – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Mon, 04 Nov 2013 17:50:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Minor Moves: Jones, Twins, Berry, Snyder, Wolf, Blackley https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/11/padres-outright-tommy-layne.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/11/padres-outright-tommy-layne.html#respond Mon, 04 Nov 2013 17:50:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2013/11/padres-outright-tommy-layne.html Here are today’s outright assignments and minor moves from around the league…

  • The Orioles are placing lefty Chris Jones on their 40-man roster, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun tweets. Jones, 25, posted a 2.67 ERA with 6.0 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 70 2/3 innings for Triple-A Norfolk this year. The move will prevent them from losing him to minor-league free agency.
  • Edgar Ibarra has been added to the Twins’ 40-man roster, the team announced today. The 24-year-old Venezuelan left-hander posted a 1.93 ERA with 8.0 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 60 2/3 innings of relief between Double-Aand Triple-A this season. By adding Ibarra to the 40-man roster, the Twins ensure that he cannot be selected in next month’s Rule 5 Draft.
  • The Twins have also re-signed Wilkin Ramirez, Dan Rohlfing, Aaron Thompson, Jermaine Mitchell, Lester Oliveros, Doug Bernier and James Beresford to minor league contracts with invites to Spring Training, tweets MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger. Ramirez and Bernier each saw time with the big league club in 2013, and Oliveros was one of two pitchers received from the Tigers in exchange for Delmon Young in 2011.
  • The Red Sox announced that they have outrighted outfielder Quintin Berry and infielder Brandon Snyder off their 40-man roster. Both are now free agents after spending the majority of this past season at Triple-A. Snyder hit .261/.332/.454 with 10 homers in the minors, while Berry slashed just .191/.309/.257 with three homers and 30 steals in 34 tries at Triple-A.
  • Right-hander Ross Wolf has re-signed with the Rangers on a minor league contract with an invitation to 2014 Spring Training, the team announced. The 31-year-old posted a 4.15 ERA in 22 appearances (three starts) for Texas in 2013, averaging 4.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 47 2/3 innings. Wolf had been outrighted off the 40-man roster and cleared waivers before re-signing.
  • In other Rangers news, left-hander Travis Blackley was also outrighted off the 40-man roster and elected free agency. In 50 1/3 innings between the Rangers and Astros, compiling a 4.83 ERA with 7.2 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9.
  • The Padres announced that they have outrighted left-hander Tommy Layne to Triple-A Tucson. Layne, 29, pitched 8 2/3 innings of 2.08 ERA ball for the Padres in his second big league stint this season. He has a 4.50 ERA with 6.1 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 704 career minor league innings between the Padres and Diamondbacks, who traded him to San Diego for cash considerations in the 2011-12 offseason. Layne was designated for assignment along with fellow lefty Colt Hynes to make roster space for Cory Luebke and Joe Wieland as they returned from the 60-day DL. Hynes has since been acquired by the Indians.

Minor Moves: Ramirez, Crowe, Purcey https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/10/minor-moves-trevor-crowe-david-purcey.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/10/minor-moves-trevor-crowe-david-purcey.html#respond Tue, 22 Oct 2013 10:19:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2013/10/minor-moves-trevor-crowe-david-purcey.html Here are today's minor moves from around the league…

  • The Twins have outrighted outfielder Wilkin Ramirez off their 40-man roster, reports Tyler Mason of FOX Sports North (on Twitter). Ramirez, who turns 28 on Friday, broke camp with the team but missed a significant portion of the season with a concussion. He received just 87 plate appearances for the Twins, batting .272/.302/.370. Though he's been primarily a corner outfielder in his minor league career, Minnesota used Ramirez in center for 50 innings this season.
  • Outfielder Trevor Crowe rejected his outright assignment from the Astros and elected free agency, according to the Pacific Coast League transactions page. The former first-rounder was outrighted last week and would have been eligble for arbitration had he remained on the 40-man roster. Instead, Crowe is now free to sign with any team following a season in which he batted .218/.287/.291 in 181 MLB plate appearances. Crowe was solid in the minors, slashing .304/.364/.388 with three homers and 16 steals in 60 Triple-A games.
  • Left-hander David Purcey rejected his outright assignment from the White Sox in lieu of free agency as well, per the International League's transactions page. Purcey, 31, posted a 2.13 ERA with 8.2 K/9 but an ugly 6.0 BB/9 rate in 24 relief appearances for the South Siders in 2013. Like Crowe, he'd have been arbitration eligible, so his team decided to cut ties early on, knowing that he wouldn't be tendered a contract. Purcey missed the final week of the season with a sprained UCL in his throwing elbow, but the injury wasn't expected to require surgery and should be able to heal with offseason rest.
  • The Dodgers' Alex Castellanos is the only player currently in DFA limbo, as can be seen in MLBTR's DFA Tracker.

Twins Notes: Hicks, Butera, Young, Betancourt, Garcia https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/twins-notes-butera-young-betancourt-garcia.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/03/twins-notes-butera-young-betancourt-garcia.html#respond Mon, 25 Mar 2013 22:56:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2013/03/twins-notes-butera-young-betancourt-garcia.html The Twins announced yesterday that they will hand the reins in center field over to top prospect Aaron Hicks. The 2008 first-rounder ranked 72nd on Baseball America's Top 100 list and 98th on MLB.com's Top 100. Here's some more on the Twinkies as we draw closer to the end of Spring Training…

  • General manager Terry Ryan told MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger that Hicks won the Opening Day job because he doesn't believe in holding players back for service time reasons: "'Can you imagine if we sent somebody out who did what the kid did?' Ryan said. 'And I had to look at [Josh] Willingham, [Justin] Morneau, [Glen] Perkins, [Joe] Mauer and those guys who are trying to win, and I'm going to stop that guy? I just don't believe in that.'"
  • Other teams are interested in catcher Drew Butera, who the Twins optioned to Triple-A yesterday, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). However the Twins prefer to keep Butera, who they signed to a $700K contract in order to avoid arbitration this winter. The 29-year-old is just a .183/.232/.265 career hitter but is regarded as a terrific defensive catcher.
  • The Twins contacted Chris Young this offseason and had interest in him at one point according to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, but an official tells Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post that the team no longer considers him a fit (Twitter link). Young is set to opt out of his contract with the Nationals.
  • The Twins were approached by representatives for both Yuniesky Betancourt and Freddy Garcia, according to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN, but the team passed on both players (Twitter links).
  • Outfielder Wilkin Ramirez, who signed a minor league deal with the Twins, has all but guaranteed himself a spot on the Opening Day roster, tweets MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. A corresponding 40-man roster move will need to be made in the coming days.

  • The Mets announced that they agreed to sign left-hander Scott Rice to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training. Rice, 31, has a 4.08 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 in 14 minor league seasons.
  • The Mets also signed outfielder Jamie Hoffmann to a minor league contract, Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports. The 28-year-old spent this past season with the Orioles' Triple-A team.
  • The Cardinals agreed to a minor league contract with first baseman/right fielder Jamie Romak, MLBTR has learned. The Cardinals acquired the 27-year-old from the Royals midway through the 2012 season. In 442 total plate appearances in the upper minors, Romak posted a .260/.336/.406 batting line and hit 10 home runs and 21 doubles this past season.
  • The Blue Jays signed infielder Jim Negrych to a minor league deal that includes an invitation to Spring Training, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports (on Twitter).
  • The Twins announced that they signed 12 players to minor league contracts that include invitations to MLB Spring Training: right-handers Samuel Deduno, Shairon Martis, Luis Perdomo, Esmerling Vasquez and P.J. Walters; outfielders Brian Dinkleman and Wilkin Ramirez; infielders James Beresford and Deibinson Romero and catcher Eric Fryer. Right-hander Tom Boleska and infielder Jason Christian also signed minor league deals with the Twins.

Minor Moves: Wood, Burton, Gonzalez, Buchholz https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/minor-moves-gonzalez-buchholz-ortega.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/minor-moves-gonzalez-buchholz-ortega.html#comments Thu, 17 Nov 2011 16:54:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/11/minor-moves-gonzalez-buchholz-ortega.html Moves listed here without specific attribution come from MLB.com's transactions page

  • The Rockies have signed infielder Brandon Wood, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. Wood will make $100K over the league minimum if he makes the big league roster, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter). Wood, of course, was once a blue-chip prospect with the Angels.
  • The Twins have signed right-handers Brendan Wise, Jared Burton, Samuel Deduno and Luis Perdomo, and outfielders Matt Carson and Wilkin Ramirez to Minor League deals, tweets Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune.
  • The Padres released second baseman Alberto Gonzalez. San Diego appears to be clearing 40-man roster space in anticipation of next month's Rule 5 draft.
  • Right-hander Taylor Buchholz elected free agency. The Mets removed Buchholz from their 40-man roster earlier in the week. He would have earned roughly $1.2MM in 2012 had the Mets retained him through arbitration. Earlier in the week GM Sandy Alderson was unsure if anxiety and depression would prevent Buchholz from pitching in 2012.
  • The Angels released right-hander Anthony Ortega.

Wilkin Ramirez To Be Minor League Free Agent https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/09/wilkin-ramirez-to-be-minor-league-free-agent.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/09/wilkin-ramirez-to-be-minor-league-free-agent.html#comments Mon, 13 Sep 2010 17:46:25 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/09/wilkin-ramirez-to-be-minor-league-free-agent.html The Braves have removed Wilkin Ramirez from the 40-man roster, allowing him to qualify for minor league free agency in November, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.  The Braves acquired Ramirez from the Tigers on July 31st.

In 24 games for Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate, Ramirez hit .253/.351/.458 with four homers.  Heading into this season, Baseball America rated the outfielder as the eighth best prospect in Detroit's system.  The publication said that while he was unpolished, he still possessed "tantalizing five-tool ability".

The trade deadline deal calls for the Braves to send the Tigers a player to be named later or cash considerations by November 20th.

Braves Acquire Wilkin Ramirez https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/braves-acquire-wilkin-ramirez.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/braves-acquire-wilkin-ramirez.html#respond Sat, 31 Jul 2010 15:07:40 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/07/braves-acquire-wilkin-ramirez.html The Braves acquired outfielder Wilkin Ramirez from the Tigers for a player to be named later or cash considerations by November 20th, according to the team.  The Tigers had designated Ramirez for assignment on Wednesday to clear a spot for Jhonny Peralta.

Ramirez, 24, has a .230/.295/.458 line between Double and Triple A this year.  Heading into the season Baseball America ranked Ramirez eighth among Tigers prospects, but obviously his stock has dropped since then.  Still, they did praise his "tantalizing five-tool ability."
