Randy Winn – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Fri, 15 Nov 2024 05:33:21 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Giants Hire Randy Winn As VP Of Player Development https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/11/giants-hire-randy-winn-as-vp-of-player-development.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/11/giants-hire-randy-winn-as-vp-of-player-development.html#comments Fri, 15 Nov 2024 05:31:55 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=830850 The Giants announced on Thursday that they’ve hired Randy Winn as their vice president of player development. The longtime outfielder played for the Giants between 2005-09 and has been involved with the organization in a few different roles since retiring. Farm director Kyle Haines will remain in his current position, according to Andrew Baggarly of the Athletic.

Winn had a lengthy and successful run as a player. He appeared in 13 seasons between 1998-2010 and suited up for five teams. He made an All-Star team as a member of the Devil Rays in 2002 and spent a few years with the Mariners before landing in San Francisco. A switch-hitting outfielder, he finished his playing days with a .284 average and 110 home runs.

Since retiring, Winn has worked as an analyst with NBC Sports Bay Area. He spent a few seasons coaching outfielders throughout the Giants organization and spent a year in the pro scouting department. He was briefly teammates with president of baseball operations Buster Posey in ’09 and has surely maintained a relationship with the franchise icon over the past decade.

Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports that Posey initially suggested that Winn interview for the general manager position that represented the #2 role in the front office. It’s unclear if that wound up happening before the Giants tabbed Zack Minasian, himself a mainstay in San Francisco’s scouting ranks. Conversations were productive enough that Winn comes on board in a fairly significant role. Giants fans will want to check out Pavlovic’s piece, as he speaks with Winn about the job and his vision for player development more broadly.

Randy Winn Retires https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/04/randy-winn-retires.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/04/randy-winn-retires.html#comments Fri, 01 Apr 2011 12:09:20 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/04/randy-winn-retires.html Randy Winn has retired after 13 season in the big leagues, according to Janie McCauley of the Associated Press (on Twitter). The Orioles signed Winn to a minor league this past offseason then released the 36-year-old this week.

Postseason baseball eluded Winn throughout his career and last year was no exception. The Yankees, who made it to the ALCS in 2010, signed him before the season, but designated him for assignment after he struggled. The Cardinals picked him up last summer, only to miss the postseason. Winn also played for the Giants (between their recent trips to the World Series), the Mariners (after their most recent playoff appearance) and the Rays (before they sniffed the playoffs).

Winn retires with a .284/.343/.416 line, 1759 hits, 110 homers and 215 stolen bases. He earned over $42MM in his career, according to Baseball-Reference.

Orioles Release Randy Winn https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/orioles-release-randy-winn.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/orioles-release-randy-winn.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 10:50:42 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/03/orioles-release-randy-winn.html Outfielder Randy Winn asked for and was granted his unconditional release, according to an Orioles press release.  Winn was one of eight cuts made today, as Nolan Reimold was optioned to Triple-A while Clay Rapada, Mark Hendrickson, David Riske, Ryan Drese, Pat Egan, and Nick Green were assigned to minor league camp.  As previously noted, Hendrickson and Riske can opt out.  The Orioles currently have 39 players on their 40-man roster and 28 in camp.

Winn, 36, hit .239/.307/.356 in 233 plate appearances for the Yankees and Cardinals last year, tallying 401 outfield innings.  He signed a minor league deal with the Orioles in early February.

Orioles Moves: Hendrickson, Riske, VandenHurk https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/orioles-moves-riske-vandenhurk-winn.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/orioles-moves-riske-vandenhurk-winn.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 10:00:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/03/orioles-moves-riske-vandenhurk-winn.html The Orioles are paring down their roster today; here's the latest:

  • Lefty Mark Hendrickson is among the team's cuts, tweets MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli.  Hendrickson can opt out rather than report to the minors.  Given his success against lefties, he should be able to find work in the big leagues.
  • Reliever David Riske is also one of today's cuts, reports Ghiroli.  She says Riske left camp for personal reasons, and the team isn't sure whether he'll join them in Triple-A.  He too has the ability to opt out.
  • Righty Rick VandenHurk has been cut, reports Ghiroli.  Since the Dutchman is out of options, he'll have to clear waivers to remain with the organization.  The O's snagged VandenHurk at last year's trade deadline in the Will Ohman deal.

Orioles Sign Randy Winn https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/orioles-sign-randy-winn.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/orioles-sign-randy-winn.html#comments Thu, 03 Feb 2011 16:17:26 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/02/orioles-sign-randy-winn.html The Orioles announced that they have signed Randy Winn to a minor league deal and invited him to Spring Training. The 36-year-old will provide depth behind outfielders Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold.

Winn has not made the playoffs in 13 years at the Major League level, though he came close last year. The Yankees, who made it to the ALCS in 2010, signed him, but designated him for assignment after he struggled. The Cardinals picked him up, only to struggle down the stretch themselves.

In 233 plate appearances for the Yankees and Cardinals last year, Winn batted .239/.307/.356 and played all three outfield positions. He was an everyday player as recently as 2009, but at this point in his career, the switch-hitter is likely a bench player.

Randy Winn Wants To Play In 2011 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/randy-winn-wants-to-play-in-2011.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/randy-winn-wants-to-play-in-2011.html#comments Fri, 22 Oct 2010 17:01:31 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/10/randy-winn-wants-to-play-in-2011.html After 13 years and 1,717 regular season games, Randy Winn still hasn’t appeared in the playoffs, but the outfielder tells B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidwest.com that he’s not worried about signing with a contender this offseason. At this stage in his career, the 36-year-old is simply looking for a job.

“I would like to find a team that would like me to play for them, that’s going to be my first thing,” Winn said. “I don’t know what my options are going to be. I hope some organization thinks I can come in and help. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

The Yankees were hoping Winn could be a useful fourth outfielder when they signed him last winter, but he struggled and they designated him for assignment. The Cardinals picked him up, but the team struggled down the stretch so Winn missed the playoffs yet again.

Winn batted .239/.307/.356 in 233 plate appearances between the Yankees and Cardinals and played all three outfield positions. He signed for $1.1MM last winter, but he’s likely looking at a minor league deal this time. Winn doesn’t expect to sign soon, but he says he’s happy to wait for offers and play with his kids.

10:19am: The Cardinals are close to signing outfielder Randy Winn, according to the team's official Twitter feed. He was designated for assignment by the Yankees about a week ago.

Winn, 36 next week, hit just .213/.300/.295 in 71 plate appearances for the Yanks, and his merely average defensive performance wasn't even getting him playing time as a late-inning defense replacement by the end of his tenure. The Yanks are still on the hook for his $1.1MM salary, less the pro-rated portion of the league minimum that St. Louis will pay him.

Yankees Designate Randy Winn For Assignment https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/yankees-designate-randy-winn-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/yankees-designate-randy-winn-for-assignment.html#comments Fri, 28 May 2010 15:03:46 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/yankees-designate-randy-winn-for-assignment.html The Yankees designated Randy Winn for assignment to make room for Curtis Granderson, according to Ben Shpigel of the New York Times (via Twitter). Manager Joe Girardi told Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News that the Yankees went with versatility and kept Kevin Russo and Ramiro Pena on the roster instead (Twitter link).

As Ben Kabak of River Ave. Blues explained today, Russo has turned himself into a household name and the Yankees like that Pena can back up at short. That means Winn is available to the 29 other teams (along with his .213/.300/.295 line). The Yankees expected Winn to be a strong defensive presence when they signed him last winter, but he has been average, according to UZR. Winn, who turns 36 next month, makes $1.1MM this year.

Odds & Ends: Chapman, Gordon, Winn, Brewers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/odds-ends-cardinals-gordon-winn-brewers.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/odds-ends-cardinals-gordon-winn-brewers.html#comments Thu, 27 May 2010 21:17:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/odds-ends-cardinals-gordon-winn-brewers.html Some Thursday notes from around the majors…

  • Aroldis Chapman recorded seven strikeouts while allowing three hits and a walk over five shutout innings for the Reds' Triple-A affiliate in Louisville tonight, reports John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.  Chapman is in the midst of a 10 2/3 inning scoreless streak.
  • Fangraphs' Jack Moore looks at Alex Gordon's ongoing demolition of Triple-A pitching and says "there’s no excuse if he’s not back in Kansas City by June."
  • Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News tweets that "many people believe" the Yankees will designate Randy Winn for assignment when Curtis Granderson returns from the DL.  Feinsand believes the Yanks should keep Winn and instead send Kevin Russo back to the minors.
  • MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports (via Twitter) that the Brewers have signed right-hander Eduardo Morlan to a minor-league deal.  The Brewers selected Morlan from Tampa Bay in the 2008 Rule 5 draft but he was designated for assignment and returned to the Rays during spring training of that year.  The Rays just released Morlan two days ago.
  • ESPN's Insider Rumors section (subscription required) speculates that Rickie Weeks could be a trade candidate if Milwaukee doesn't want to pay his likely arbitration raise in the winter.  MLBTR's Tim Dierkes explored the Brewers' trade options last week, and noted that Weekes' arbitration salary bump might also cause teams to shy away from acquiring him.
  • John Schuerholz chatted on the air with Sirius XM Radio's Jim Bowden today.  Bowden tweeted that Schuerholz feels the Braves have enough pop in their lineup and don't "need to make a Fred McGriff type trade."  The Crime Dog was acquired by Atlanta in July 1993 for Donnie Elliott, Vince Moore and Melvin Nieves — don't you always need to make a deal like that?
  • Bowden also had Baltimore president Andy MacPhail on his show, and speculates (via Twitter) that the O's will look to draft Jameson Taillon based on MacPhail's description of his club's wants.  Bowden also tweeted that MacPhail didn't offer an endorsement of manager Dave Trembley, and instead just noted that it's still early in the season.
  • Omar Minaya said the Mets might look to trade for a starter later in the summer, reports Kieran Darcy of ESPNNewYork.com.
  • Fanhouse's Ed Price explains how Philadelphia's unheralded signings of Jose Contreras and Danys Baez have bailed out their bullpen over the first two months of the season.

Looking At The Needs Of Some Contenders https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/looking-at-contenders-needs.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/looking-at-contenders-needs.html#comments Sat, 03 Apr 2010 20:33:40 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/looking-at-contenders-needs.html With Spring Training wrapping up around the country, teams are finalizing their rosters and picking the 25 players they'll start the season with. There's always room for improvement, but some contenders have some very obvious weak spots on their rosters. Here's a look at some of them, which may need to be addressed during the season…

  • Angels, third base: Brandon Wood and Maicer Izturis will get the first cracks at replacing Chone Figgins, but if neither is up to par, the Halos might be looking for a fill-in at the hot corner.
  • Braves, outfielder: Superstar in training Jason Heyward will start the year in right, but incumbent centerfielder Nate McLouth had a brutal spring (6-for-51), which may push Melky Cabrera into full-time duty.
  • Rays, setup man: With J.P. Howell on the shelf due to a bum shoulder, the team has no obvious candidate to hand the ball off to new closer Rafael Soriano. Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour represent solid options, but if Howell misses more time than expected, the Rays might be looking to add a reliever.
  • Twins, closer: This is the most obvious hole of them all. Joe Nathan is out for the season after having elbow surgery, and Jon Rauch will get the first chance to replace him.
  • Yankees, left field: The team is breaking camp with Brett Gardner, Randy Winn, and Marcus Thames set to share time in left, but we've already seen a scenario laid out in which they might need help sooner rather than later.

That doesn't include all of the clubs that could very well be looking to add a starting pitcher at some point, like the Mariners, Mets, Phillies, Cubs, and Dodgers. Some other holes aren't so obvious though. Maybe the Red Sox could use another reliever (who couldn't?), or perhaps Seattle will go looking for a big bat that fits into their extreme run prevention plan.

What other areas of need to do you see out there for contenders?

Yanks Could Be Shopping For Outfielder Soon https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/yanks-could-be-shopping-for-outfielder-soon.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/yanks-could-be-shopping-for-outfielder-soon.html#comments Sat, 03 Apr 2010 14:58:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/yanks-could-be-shopping-for-outfielder-soon.html Some in the industry are already wondering if the Yankees could be in the market for outfield help soon, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports

Both Randy Winn and Marcus Thames have struggled this spring, though Thames officially made the club's Opening Day roster today.  The club may find themselves uneasy with the two veterans as starting left fielder Brett Gardner is not yet an established major league hitter.  They would be especially thin in the outfield if Curtis Granderson or Nick Swisher are bitten by the injury bug.

Rosenthal writes that the Yankees figure to be more patient with Winn as he is more than four years removed from playing in the AL.

The Yankees investment in Winn and Thames amounts to just $2MM combined.  Rosenthal writes that if one or both struggle, and Gardner also stumbles out of the gate, then the team could be seeking an outfielder quickly.

Winn, 35, slipped to .262/.318/.353 in 597 plate appearances for the Giants last year (including a brutal 125 PAs against lefties).  His corner outfield defense still rates well; that was probably the draw for Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

The Jays have also considered bringing Carlos Delgado back, Anthopoulos and manager Cito Gaston revealed in the session.

8:33am: Yesterday we learned from ESPN's Jerry Crasnick that agent Scott Boras is "trying to engage" the Reds and Tigers on Johnny Damon.  Today, two Reds beat writers label the Reds an unlikely match.  MLB.com's Mark Sheldon talked to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who admitted to discussing Damon but says the outfielder doesn't fit financially.  The Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay calls their interest "lukewarm."

Fay says the Reds called Boras about Xavier Nady and asked about Damon too.  Via Twitter, Fay notes that Reds owner Bob Castellini might adjust the budget for the right free agent addition.  Fay says the Reds are still talking to Jonny Gomes and Orlando Cabrera, and feels something is brewing in Cincinnati.

Yesterday, we learned from Joel Sherman of the New York Post that the Rays have interest in Damon as a DH candidate.  The Yankees are out, having agreed to a deal with Randy Winn yesterday.  In another article, Sherman chronicles a last-ditch attempt by Damon to engage the Yanks in the middle of last week.  Public sniping between Boras and GM Brian Cashman followed.  Sherman has more on the Cashman-Boras drama here.
