The Cubs’ first addition of the offseason will come in the bullpen, as Chicago has agreed to terms with right-hander Phil Maton on a two-year, $14.5MM contract with a club option for a third season. The Paragon Sports International client can pick up another $250K worth of incentives based on innings pitched in each of the two guaranteed seasons on the contract.
Maton split last season between the Cardinals and Rangers. He joined St. Louis on a one-year, $2MM deal and pitched well for the first half of the season. After 38 1/3 innings of a 2.35 ERA, the Cardinals shipped him to Texas at the trade deadline for minor league pitchers Mason Molina and Skylar Hales. Maton’s ERA rose to 3.52 with his new team, but he upped his strikeout rate to 36.7% and picked up three saves over 23 appearances.
Chicago will be Maton’s eighth team in 10 big-league seasons. He was drafted by the Padres in 2015. Eye-popping strikeout numbers helped the righty zoom through San Diego’s system, and he reached the big leagues by 2017. Maton delivered decent contributions with the Padres in his first two seasons, though he missed time with a lat strain in 2018. After a half-season spent bouncing between the Padres and Triple-A El Paso the following year, Maton was dealt to Cleveland for cash.
Maton flashed the swing-and-miss upside he had shown in the minors for the first time at the big-league level with Cleveland. He posted a 33.3% strikeout rate across 23 games in the shortened 2020 season, then pushed it to 34.3% in the first half of 2021. Maton was on the move again at the 2021 trade deadline, heading with Yainer Diaz to Houston for Myles Straw. The deal turned out to be a big win for the Astros, even before factoring in Diaz’s contributions. Maton compiled a 3.67 ERA across 157 innings with Houston through 2023. He was phenomenal during the 2021 playoffs, allowing just one earned run in 12 games. Maton secured three holds in the postseason that year, including two in the World Series.
Maton hit the open market following the 2023 season and landed in Tampa Bay on a one-year, $6.5MM deal. He struggled with the Rays and ended up getting dealt to the Mets in early July. Maton put together 28 2/3 innings of a 2.51 ERA in New York, but stumbled in the postseason. The veteran was knocked around for six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings in the playoffs, including four home runs.
Velocity isn’t Maton’s strong suit, as his fastball barely cracks 90 mph. The veteran has found success by leading with his curveball and mixing in cutters and sinkers. Maton has used the hook as his primary pitch in two of the last three seasons. He threw it 38.2% of the time last year, and it recorded a healthy +10 run value. Maton’s cutter, curveball, and sweeper all had whiff rates above 32% last season.
Maton has excelled at limiting hard contact at every stop. He’s limited hitters to a 29.9% hard-hit rate for his career. Maton ranked in the 98th percentile or better in hard-hit rate, barrel rate, and average exit velocity last season.
With Brad Keller hitting free agency and Andrew Kittredge traded to Baltimore, Chicago had a clear need for a righty at the backend of the bullpen. Daniel Palencia will likely resume closer duties after battling injuries at the end of last season, but Maton should factor into the late-inning mix alongside Porter Hodge. FanGraphs’ RosterResource tool has the Cubs’ payroll at around $177MM for 2026. The club has been above $200MM the past two seasons, so there could be more room to add in the bullpen. Luke Little and Jordan Wicks don’t have a ton of big-league experience between them, so pursuing a veteran southpaw might make sense.
Bleacher Nation’s Michael Cerami first reported that Maton was signing with the Cubs. Will Sammon of The Athletic reported the length of the deal, and the New York Post’s Jon Heyman first broke the financial terms.

Enjoy him blowing close games, he is awful
Used properly, he is ok. Whip of 1.11 or less two years in a row.
Used in mop up duty. In a close game he’s a disaster
That whip for a reliever is nothing special.
Wonder what the guarantee is. 10 million?
Used properly is the key part of that sentence. CC tends to ride the same guys and over use them. By the back half of the season he will be worn out and unusable if he even lasts that long.
It’s always the crap games that stand out most with relievers.
That said, over the past 3 seasons and 191 IP’s, batters have hit .202/.300/.326 off him.
Those 787 batters seem to think he’d be a fine addition to any pen.
He was fantastic for a big chunk of last season with the Cards.
Meatball Maton
Let the dumpster diving commence!
That’s getting really old.
It’s been old for years.
And stupid
It’s not that Hoyer isn’t good at finding bullpen bargains, He is. And it’s not that it isn’t a valuable skill to have, It is. The question is and has been under Hoyer is how many games will they fall behind the Brewers and or Reds while he and I’m assuming the scouts who are the real heroes scan the universe for his usual late run that falls 5 or 6 games short? That’s what needs addressing.
Cubs ended regular season one game behind Dodgers and two games behind Toronto. The fact that the Brewers were the best regular season team in baseball does not diminish that the Cubs did much more right than wrong. Given that Ricketts is unwilling to spend like a big market team, I think it will hard to overcome situations like the 2025 early injury to Steele and late injury to Horton.
It is old, just like Jed’s RP signings. Just bc it’s old doesn’t make it untrue 🤷♂️
At least they’re making moves, the reds just tendered benson..
They non tendered catcher will banfield not will benson
Yes but they kept benson
Gotcha I read that wrong
He’s actually been halfway decent in 2023-25, with 3.3 bWAR over 191.1 innings. Don’t know about giving him two years but there are a lot worse relievers out there.
plus he has a bright red statcast page save two categories.
That should be Jed’s motto. “Hey, there’s a lot worse out there, so stop crying.”
He was solid with the Cardinals.
Nice pickup for the Cubs.
I was hoping the Cardinals would of swoop him up again. He did pretty good with them. A veteran presence in the bullpen.
Doesn’t he throw a deceptive 89 mph fastball? (But from the release point it looks like a 92 mph, he just needs to get it in there on the top rung.) Also this guy doesn’t smile. He will replace Tucker for the Cubbies in that regard. Stone Face Maton, do not mess with him, and do not call him ‘shorty’.
His picture on baseball reference is the only face I’ve seen him with lol
Tucker “smiled” more but yeah he too was a pretty stoic guy.
Yes his primary pitch is a cutter
The pitching lab can unlock his skill set and take him to a new level, in theory.
/s
He also has the shiftiest eyes in baseball. I smile every time he looks in at the catcher.
That’s a good signing, Maton has been a pretty good reliever and this bolsters the bullpen.
Has to be an improvement over Eli Morgan.
Wonder if Hoyer can get a Mulligan for that horrible trade?
It doesn’t, watch him in games that matter when it’s close. He’s horrible. His ERA in 38 innings masks what’s really going on.
I’d like to complain but even I have to admire the Cubs record at picking up guys like this and actually making them better. It’s still not like he’s insurance if Palencia goes down though. That’s what’s really needed or if Hodge reverts to 2024 form and Little steps up. His control is improving. I just wonder which LH comes back at this point, Pomeranz or Thielbar.
I wouldn’t mind seeing both Pomeranz and Thielbar back. I’m simple-minded: My thinking is, they were good last season, so bring them back. Keller too.
If Keller wants to start the Cubs don’t really need him anymore. Just say thanks and wave. It’s a shame because I think he could have been a Closer.
I think his forecast calls for cloudy with 50% chance of regression.
That’s fine on a one year deal for cheap, giving him $14.5m is insane. When he’s pitching in meaningless games he’ll turn in a decent ERA and peripherals. With pressure he wilts. Loses his command and lobs soft fastballs cause he can’t throw a strike. His stuff isn’t that good and he can’t keep composure in big situations. Watch his time with the Mets, that’s what he really is.
They call him spin rate and his curve is deadly, but he always seems mediocre?
Cubs fans rage incoming
Erm, Kitteridge was traded back to the O’s.
Wait, but this isn’t a 39 year old and it’s not a minor league contract? Cubs def spending big this year 😂
Uncle Mike is still pondering how to rage this signing.
Funny and true!
Rage about the signing? I rage when I’m upset about something. This isn’t remotely upsetting. The Cubs have great scouts and a bunch of bullpen pieces to fill the holes. I’ll blast Hoyer when it’s called for. I call em as I see em. He hasn’t even done anything to be remotely upset at yet. In fact, He really doesn’t have to do much of anything at all to improve the team IMO. Morgan, Brasier, Kittredge, out, Someone needed to step in. I mean Brasier-Maton what’s the difference? Find something intelligent to say about me at least. LOL
Unclemike is READY for Thanksgiving…got a lot of PROBLEMS with the people sitting around that table!
This is a nice move by the Cubs because Maton is a decent middle inning relief pitcher. Cubs fans should like him because he is from the Springfield, Illinois area.
Most people in Springfield are Cardinals fans.
I am originally from southern Illinois. Everyone I knew there were Cardinals fans. There were no Cubs fans to be found.
Even further north in Champaign-Urbana, there were even number fans of Cardinals and Cubs.
Salem to Belleville here. We are out there
So too Bloomington/Normal.
Doug, that has shifted in the last ten years because the Cards haven’t been Cardinaling very well for a while 😊🤷♂️
More junk
Very meh. Find someone who loves you as much as Hoyer loves signing pitchers with below-average fastballs.
Hoyer always signs the easy ones for more money than anyone else would have then says “see look I did something not my fault we can’t get better.”
I’m not a big Hoyer fan, but he put together one of the best bullpens in baseball last season and with the exception of Pressly, he did it for absolutely bargain basement prices.
Good point, rondon. Pomeranz..meh. Theilbar..meh. Keller..meh. They actually had about seven or eight better “mehs” than Pressly or Tanner Scott.
Get about 10 or 11 meh guys and fit the puzzle with four that are really good by July.
It’s unreal how all three of those meh guys stepped up. Maybe there’s something to their Pitch Lab process.
Now we have two Cubs under contract for 2027
Is this going to be frustrating?
Xmas came early! Shota at 22m for 89mph down the middle and another under 90 guy to round out the pen!
When you get in line Hanley how about you ask Santa for an additional brain cell so you can double the output, please.
Its November!
But at least the Cubs keep you busy….the gift that keeps on giving to the needy.
I find it fascinating that a comment on a team that had won exactly 1 championship in 108 yrs,the fans become so obsessed with personal attacks. It shows the cut goes very deep. Not every Cub fan takes the Kool Aid they keep selling.
So do you want to give them credit for being the ONLY team in the history of the sport, as a franchise, to NEVER been below .500.
That covers 150 years.
And it becomes even more humorous that the attacks come from a Sox fan whose team has one exactly one championship in the last 108 years.
Troll away.
I’m a Cub fan, actually. Its so strange how emotional fans get if a fact is thrown out that’s negative. Like you are actually a member of the team or a player. Winning matters more than having an over .500 record. But that’s Cub Culture
You’re a Cub troll, hanley.
Cub fans are difficult to understand. Hoyer is awful if he does nothing, awful if he signs a player with success the last two Seasons. Posters with positive posts, will receive a thumbs up from others with a let’s see attitude, but won’t comment their views. The negative comments always come in abundance, with end of life Drama. It’s really hard to have a Conversation or debate, because of everyone’s Superior Knowledge. Anyway, I see nothing wrong with this signing and wish Maton huge success.
Agree. Though I think that’s true with all fans, not just Cubs’ fans. Most of those with the negative attitudes post more so they scream the loudest.
I would say you are 💯 correct and appreciate your comment.
Absolutely!
Hoyer is frustrating when it comes to the deadline. I mean I get it, especially the bullpen not signing guys to big money, but when bullpen arms are needed, he cheaps out at the deadline. It crippled them in 2023 and 2024 when the bullpen fell apart. In 2025, he did make good moves, the offense just checked out in the second half and that’s not on him.
Hopefully he doesn’t sign Tucker which is very doubtful and maybe gets another starter since Taillon is in his last year.
“…awful if he does nothing, awful if he signs a player with success the
last two seasons”.thus Jed Hoyer.
“The negative comments always come in abundance,…”
Is this not true of most pobo’s?
Why would anyone want this job?
This is an excellent point as far as who would want the job. It is absolutely thankless, unless you win the WS. Same with Manager, with social media, every move is questioned good or bad. I like to question moves as they are being made on the field, sometimes right. GM moves, hard to question at times, they have so much more info, Injury History, Personalities, Work Ethics, Strengths/Weakness, Coachable and so on.
Signing low end old as RP isn’t “dOInG soMEThInG”
Lick those dumpster stealing boots. YUMMERS!
Could have been worse, they could have signed his brother…
Nick couldn’t cut it with the White Sox last season…
Seems like an overpay.
Maton didn’t have a good showing with the Rays?
HE SUCKED!
$14.5m right in the garbage
These veteran 7mil guys to handle 6th/7th is where Brewers reload young guys they develop near league minimum. More of the hidden dollars to explain how they spend less and keep winning division.
Yep. That’s a lot of money for 90 mph reliever. These are the guys look to clobber once the starter is pulled. If you’re gonna spend money, make an impact. Otherwise spend it on development.
Carter Hawkins probably has ties to Maton from their time in Cleveland, which is when Maton also established himself as an above average reliever. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs targeted Maton for a specific reason because they saw something they could tweak to get more out of him. Maybe alter his delivery to uptick his velocity a bit, and really elevate his pitch mix into something even more deadly. The Cubs have a tendency to make these “out of the blue” signings that are actually very deliberate and with purpose.
I remember when Phil Maton was playing for the Astros. He was pretty good, with an ERA about 0.60, but started to blow games in the 7th inning. Maybe one reason we finished tied with Texas in 2023.
Happy Thanksgiving and holidays, Mr. Maton!
This is definitely a contract you offer if you’re the Cubs and you think there’s a fair chance you won’t be on the hook for Year #2. … Maton doesn’t have the leverage to demand more money in Year 1 and/or Year 3, which I think will complicate other negotiations.
So then offer him 1 year then. If you don’t get him, there are plenty of other guys like him to go after.
Solid signing. Good pitcher. That is all.
First the Cubs blew $9m on Hector Neris in 2024. Then $9m on Ryan Pressly in 2025…please tell me this isnt another bucket of money on a guy who cant close out games.
Cubbies addressing an important part of the team early.
This seems like a reasonable signing. Not too expensive or long term. I do wish they had tried to retain Keller and Pomeranz and Kittredge. Now they have to scour the market again for undervalued assets. This one is certainly not from the high end of the spectrum.
