Cubs Sign Ian Miller To Minors Deal

By Connor Byrne | December 18, 2019 at 9:15pm CDT

The Cubs have signed outfielder Ian Miller to a minor league contract, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets.

Now 27 years old, Miller entered the pro ranks as a 14th-round pick of the Mariners in 2013. He stuck with the franchise until it traded him to Minnesota for cash considerations last August. Miller never appeared in the majors as a Mariner, but he did get a cup of coffee as a member of the Twins, with whom he totaled three hits (two singles and a double) over 17 plate appearances.

While Miller doesn’t bring much experience in the bigs, he has been a mainstay in Triple-A ball dating back to 2017. The speedy Miller owns a .263/.334/.370 line with 81 stolen bases across 1,169 trips to the plate at the minors’ highest level.

STOP FOCUSING ON PROSPECT DEPTH AND DO SOMETHING

The two are independent from each other, these depth signings are going to happen no matter what they do with the big fishes. I understand the frustration but it isn’t stopping them.

He’s also not really “prospect depth” he’s more just depth at this point lol — but he does seem to possess quite impressive speed and if he can hit anywhere near the levels he has in AAA over the past few seasons – he actually could become a pinch-runner/extra OF that actually provides some value assuming his minor league base stealing prowess can carry over to the bigs.

It appears that until the Bryant service-time decision is issued and Donaldson goes off the board the Cubs are in limbo.. The Cubs have to move somebody to free up $ and it is evident that player will be Bryant.

Good depth piece. Great addition to the core. Good low risk/high ceiling move. I absolutely love this move. Cubs print money.

Any cubs news he post this exact same comment. It was slightly clever the 1st time but loses its punch after cutting and pasting it 36 times. Take a note from George Costanza and go out on a high note.

This makes me crazy because the Cubs do print money and the value of their franchise went from $900M to $3B. They grossed at least $600M. And they owe maybe $300M because you have to pay these guys or you lose them. That’s why the Cubs need a great farm system so they can just bring up a guy from the minors who we did to great effect

Cubs should make two big trades:

Trade Kris Bryant to the Dodgers for Alex Verdugo and Dustin May.

Trade Willson Contreras to the Rays for Brendan McKay and Xavier Edwards.

I do not think the LAD would make that move, 11 years of those two for 1 or 2 years of Bryant? Also considering they have a very steady 3rd basemen for that time frame in Turner.

I think their 1st trade needs to be acquiring Miguel Andujar… For Happ/prospect

Then id like to see cubs/braves deal for Bryant … Maybe Bryant/Quintana for incarte/Ian Anderson/Kyle Wright/drew waters
      Or Phillies for Sagura/Spencer Howard/ Kingery/ Monaik

And if your trading Contreras to rays id go for Libeatore/Diego Castillo/Honeywell…
But rather go to Astros for Tucker or Forrest

If they think this is their title run window they would.. Quintana 2020> than Anderson and wright ..
They have sokora, folty, Fried, Hamels… They need a 5th guy that is established, not a prospect .., think their objective would be keeping Pache

Ya there’s absolutely zero chance that the Dodgers would take that trade. That’s way too much for even two years of Bryant, he could get one big name prospect and volume of lesser prospects behind that, not two big names.

I have a scenario i wanna see if anyone thinks may happen,
the red sox need a first baseman, BAD. the cubs have an elite power hitter in Rizzo, the red sox want to and need to dump payroll in a david price/mookie scenario, while im NOT saying trade both to the cub’s, Rizzo is a red sox product, he was traded to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez ( i wont get into that, i hated the move) but im curious if you see any scenario with the cubs who are in the ‘ kinda good but not great anymore need to get better’ phase trading Rizzo to boston for a good return? From what i see with the cubs it seems like almost anyones available and they are listening, and theo epsteins pretty familiar with the red sox.. so ya, thoughts?

Rizzo being the face of the Cubs prolly not going anywhere… But to play along the package would have to be centered around at least a Benintendi… But in reality, both teams are looking to dump payroll, so it wouldn’t make sense any way you flip it

Can’t dump salary into a team trying to dump salary.

I think Amanda2019’s conceit either included a separate salary dump of Price and/or Betts, or maybe a three-team trade.

If BOS was able to clear enough salary first, it probably would still be difficult to pry Rizzo away from the Cubs.

That said, a Red Sox failure securing a good medium- to long-term alternative at 1B this offseason coupled by an even less inspiring 2020 showing by the Cubs followed by the departure of Betts could significantly increase the chances of Rizzo-back-to-Boston next offseason.

Here is your alternative solution. Bryant can actually play first base and corner outfield probably better than he plays 3B. Nobody seems to be focusing on Bryant’s ability to play at multiple positions in any trade talks on any site. The guy is actually mediocre defensively at 3B.
