The Braves have designated right-hander Luke Jackson for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot will go to starter Mike Soroka, who has been activated from the 10-day DL.
Jackson, 26, has been on and off the Atlanta 40-man roster a few times already in the past two seasons. For the most part, other than exhibiting good velocity, he has not shown much cause to command a regular MLB job.
That said, Jackson has shown an intriguing increase in his strikeout rate thus far in 2018, recording nine strikeouts (and allowing just two hits) in 5 1/3 MLB innings and 34 more in his 21 1/3 frames at Triple-A. He has also doled out too many free passes, though, including four in his brief time this year in the majors.
We’ll see if another organization decides to give Jackson a look, or if he’ll strike out onto the open market if he clears waivers. Having been outrighted previously, he’ll have the right to decide.
Meanwhile, the Braves will gladly welcome back Soroka. The 20-year-old phenom ended up missing about a month with a shoulder injury. He’ll make his fourth MLB start today.

Should have left him in the minors
You are wrong

Comments are full of overreaction and trolling. If you say you’re a fan of the Braves and complain about the team right now then you probably complain if you get too many fries at McDonalds.
hurricanewar23
What if the Texas rangers could get Luke Jackson back. Our season is lost anyway
stansfield123
I like this Soroka kid. but he’s not gonna do all that much at the major league level this year. I wonder what it would take for the Yanks to get him in a trade. They have all kinds of win-now pieces wasting away in triple A, if the Braves are desperate enough to make the post season this year.
Clint Frazier and Drury would help the Braves way more than a 20 year old pitching phenom who should still be in the minors, honing his craft. So come on, dudes, whaddayasay? Hand him over. You’re just gonna ruin him anyway, by asking him to step up this young. The Yanks will give you what you need (win now guys, with plenty of team control left, at just the right positions), and they get to take a flier on a young guy with no ceiling, in return.
#Fantasygeekland
The braves probably aren’t trading soroka, especially not that easily. I also don’t really see how Frazier helps them win now anymore than soroka would since they have Acuna, markakis, enciarte already. Riley will be up before too long and drury isn’t much of an upgrade at present.
K_Man915
No ceiling…? The worst scouting report I’ve seen described his floor as a #3 with the potential for him to be even better if things go well. Last I checked a 20 year old high floor starter with at least six years of cheap control remaining wasn’t cheap.
stansfield123
What do you think I meant by “no ceiling”? You think that was a putdown?
No ceiling means that there are no limits to how good he can become.
K_Man915
Usually I think that would be called high ceiling… but yes I took no ceiling as “this is as good as he’s gonna get”
inkstainedscribe
Which is why the Braves should trade him? The sky’s the limit? Unless you think the Braves’ FO is filled with a bunch of rubes, or their role is to make the Yankees happy at the expense of the Braves’ future, then I don’t get the point of this.
inkstainedscribe
Since the Braves weren’t really expecting to make the postseason this year but build for the future, I see no sense in ditching the farm system to win now. This ain’t fantasy baseball.
Jwick22
Pretty sure if the yanks did trade for him they would not send him to the minors. You make it out like they would give him more time before putting him the rotation.
RunDMC
Won’t do much? (Small sample-size alert) He has a 2.76 FIP in his first 3 MLB starts and a 2.00 ERA at AAA. Out of all the pitching prospects in our system, he’s readily said to be the most ready. Gohara might have a higher ceiling, but Soroka’s floor is much much much higher than Gohara’s.
No digs against Frazier and Drury – but that’s not an upgrade (over Markakis/Acuna and Camargo). If you want Soroka, hand over Torres or Severino. Exactly, that’s what I thought.
stansfield123
Huh?. You want the most likely rookie of the year, or the most likely Cy Young winner, for a 20 year old pitcher with a 1.7 WHIP over 14 major league innings?
Yeah, okay. Should we throw in Judge too, while we’re at it? You’re being ridiculous.
Soroka is a very good prospect. But he’s given up 25 base runners in 14 innings, so far. That’s twice as many baserunners per inning as Scherzer….you know, the guy who’s team you need to beat to get to the post season. You really think that plan will work out?
I assure you, it won’t. If you want a chance at the post season, you gotta get better.
Zach725
How does trading a top prospect who has 6 more years of control after this year, make the braves better?
tharrie0820
What exactly does Soroka gave to work on in the minors? Before he got called you, he had an I think 1.8 ERA, over 10k/9, walking less than 1.5 /9 with a ground ball rate over 70 percent…as a 20 year old at triple A
tharrie0820
Aaaand now I realize stansfield’s post isn’t serious. RIP me
bravesfan
Yea… I don’t think at this time the braves would consider trading him without a kings ransom. He’ll be expensive. Also, “win now” typically aren’t minor leaguers even if they are good minor leaguers. At the moment, on drury would have a spot on the field to play and that’s not even worth it. We need pitching and we need it bad, especially in the bullpen
stansfield123
You should get more pitching. But pitching is not the only thing you need.
I know the Braves’ rookie hitters are getting hyped like crazy, but that’s because you guys have been stinking up the place for years, and, compared to that any even moderately decent hitter is gonna seem like a future hall of famer.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, Acuna has a .329 OBP, Albies .300, That’s below major league average. Neither of those two would be on the Yankee 25 man, they’d be back in the minors learning how to take a pitch off the plate.
Meanwhile, Clint Frazier and Drury have been through that process. That’s what makes them major league ready: they can get on base better than any Brave except for Freeman. They would be much more helpful this year than Soroka.
#Fantasygeekland
You clearly don’t know what you are talking about. Acuna is the best prospect in baseball. Judge wasn’t great initially either. If I were a braves fan , I wouldn’t sweat a .329 obp in a guys first 117 mlb ABs. They have 13 guys ranked in the fangraphs top 100 prospects, released two days ago.
#Fantasygeekland
This is almost as bad as another chance adams, Frazier, drury/Austin, and a no name prospect for another team’s ace.
matt9975
I got a good laugh out of this.
jbigz12
The Yankees should definitely trade their assets for a rookie who probably won’t be pitching in September because of innings caps. You essentially proposed a near MLB ready prospect swap + Brandon Drury. Not exactly filling anyone’s needs there.

Time to turn off MLB The Show for today Johnny Superscout

Lol. In the meantime he no hits the Mets for 6 innings.

Braves might need luke jackson if snitker keeps pulling the pitchers after 5 1/3 innings. folty got pulled with just 73 pitches and only 1 run.
meatloaf213
Folty only went 5 last night and didn’t give up a run. But if you would pay attention he got pulled with triceps tightness not because Snitker just wanted to pull him.

Ron Washington is still the 3b coach. At some point you’ve got to stretch these pitchers out or you risk over using the bullpen.
