The Braves announced this afternoon that they’ve claimed infielder Phil Gosselin off waivers from the Reds and assigned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta had open space on its 40-man roster, so there’s no corresponding move necessary with Gosselin’s claim.
This will mark Gosselin’s second stint with the Atlanta organization, as the Braves were the club to initially select him out of the University of Virginia in the fifth round of the 2010 draft. Gosselin went on to make his Major League debut for the Braves three years later, and in parts of three seasons with Atlanta, he slashed .282/.321/.345 through 185 trips to the plate.
Since being traded to the Braves in the deal that saw Atlanta effectively purchase pitching prospect Touki Toussaint from the D-backs by absorbing the remainder of Bronson Arroyo’s contract, Gosselin has spent time in Arizona, Pittsburgh, Texas and Cincinnati. All told, he’s a lifetime .263/.314/.361 hitter that’ll provide the Braves with some depth at second base, shortstop and third base while playing at the Triple-A level.

Always nice to have former braves back… :/

You’re right. I can’t wait for the Dan Uggla reunion.

Culbertson replacement if he cant get it going
southi
And so far Culberson has definitely struggled with the bat. The big question is whether Gosselin will one day replace Culberson or Bautista eventually takes his spot on the 25 man roster.

I’d like to see us be patient and maybe Machado or Donaldson will become available at trade deadline so we can get a nice 3rd base
jbaker3170
So give up a ton of prospects for a rental in Donaldson or Machado?? Not going to happen
GarryHarris
Do the Braves need Charlie Culberson? Ryan Flaherty, Yohan Camargo and Preston Tucker are playing too well to keep off the field and Culberson isn’t the best PH/PR
baseballfanforever
Culberson is a waste of a roster spot. Career .224 hitter with no power. For over 450 at bats I think he has proven his worth.

A hotdog with mustard on it is the best.

Woulda been great if he woulda stayed in Texas. We need him more than ever now. But hey Congrads to the Braves for bringing one of there own back. I really hope he does great with the Braves. Good Luck
biff_pocoroba
“You’ve just been fired by the worst team in baseball. Welcome to Atlanta!”
southi
I love the name. I remember Pocoroba as a third string catcher who picked up several timely hits back on some bad Braves teams.

And the Diamondbacks have thus far won that trade because Arroyo never played for the Braves and Touki looks bad in AA this year after looking bad in high A last year. At least Gosselin played for Arizona.
Phillies2017
I dont think we can say that for sure until Touki officially flames out. Still has potential.
As for Gosselin, the Dbacks got Frank Duncan out of him who was released and signed with LA.
whoframedcoppy
You obviously have not been following touki’s brave’s tenure. His peripherals have been progressing at a more than appropriate rate. His “stuff” is top shelf and due to rule 5 considerations and a log jam in the rotation there is a good chance he is fast tracked to the bigs via the bullpen and impacts our playoff run next year.
southi
Toussaint may eventually be an impact reliever, but the kid needs to learn to throw strikes first.
baseballfanforever
Can’t rate trades until players have retired. Toussaint has tremendous potential. Perhaps the best stuff of any pitcher in the Braves system but he has trouble controlling his pitches. That’s why they keep running him out there and he keeps getting promoted. If he works out he could be a tremendous asset.
doxiedevil
Nice seeing loyalty, he played hard and was a real team guy. Hope he eventually gets some bench time with Atlanta.

Anybody else think that Adrian Beltre would be a perfect fit for the Braves. And does anybody think Texas would move him & if so would he want a last run for the playoffs and accept a trade to the Braves ? And if so what would it take to get him ???
southi
Beltre would be MUCH better than Bautista for sure, but for some reason I expect Texas to want a hefty price for him. The question is probably more likely to be would he want to go to Atlanta.
GarryHarris
The Braves will go after Mike Moustakas before they go after Adrian Beltre or Josh Donaldson. Even then, Moustakas seems too slow to fit this Braves team. I see them make a move for JD Davis when the Astros come calling mid season.
Zach725
I don’t think they want Moose. I could see them going after Beltre, but not sure he would want to move cities. Beltre would bring a veteran presence and great chemistry.
johnnymambo
What this means is Jose Bautista will start at third in Atlanta tomorrow night
bhamredsfan
Senzel pulled after one at bat tonight. Injured or coming to Cinci?
steelerbravenation
I see the Braves making a push for Donaldson before the deadline my whole thing is I hope they don’t sign him to a deal this offseason. With his age and the years he will want and the price tag I don’t think he is worth it. Moustakas would be ok if he hit right handed.
Rangers ain’t going anywhere and with Beltre’s age I can’t see Texas demanding a ton. I would think they owe it to him to move him to a pennant race for the twilight of his career. Would Anderson straight up get it done. Reminds me of Beltran to the Giants type scenario.
