The Diamondbacks have had internal discussions about approaching catcher Welington Castillo about a contract extension, Arizona GM Dave Stewart tells Jack Magruder of Fan Rag. It doesn’t appear as if talks have begun, however, as Stewart suggests that the team hasn’t yet decided on its course of action.
Castillo, 29, is playing out his second-to-last season of team control on a $3.7MM arbitration agreement. He’s arb-eligible a final time this winter, and will reach the open market after the 2017 campaign — unless a new deal can be struck. The sides will already be at the bargaining table to hammer out a new arbitration number, which could provide an opportune time at least to lay the groundwork for a broader agreement.
The backstop bounced around last year from the Cubs to the Mariners before landing in Arizona as part of the deal that sent Mark Trumbo to Seattle. That swap has worked out quite nicely for both the D-Backs and Castillo, as he turned things around immediately upon arriving in his new home.
Over his 625 plate appearances with the Snakes, Castillo owns a .260/.315/.468 batting line with 29 home runs. Though he did more damage at the plate last year than he has thus far in 2016, he carries far more punch than your average receiver and has been a very useful pick-up.
Notably, Castillo has made strides with his defensive work this year, according to Baseball Prospectus’s catcher ratings (subscription required and recommended). He has typically graded as a solid blocker while registering good marks with his arm. And Castillo has also improved greatly as a pitch framer; once one of the game’s least-regarded framers, he now registers as average to slightly below-average (with StatCorner valuing him higher than does BP) at winning strikes for his pitchers.
Skipper Chip Hale also adds that Castillo has worked hard at handling the Arizona staff. “Welington has been an unbelievable studier this whole year,” says Hale. “He’s improved every month. You watch him, he’s in there whether it’s with pitchers, with coaches, on his own.”
The D-Backs will obviously need to weigh organizational need in addition to valuing a player who would be entering his age-31 campaign in any new years of control that might hypothetically be added. Looking at the rest of the depth chart, though, it’s easy to see how Castillo could make for a longer-term fit.
Chris Herrmann has put together 161 surprisingly excellent plate appearances this year while playing catcher and a variety of other positions, but it would be hard to rely on that continuing. Tuffy Gosewisch still provides a depth option. And 2015 Rule 5 pick Oscar Hernandez is still in the organization, though he has struggled at the Double-A level after earning a promotion with a strong batting line in High-A action earlier this year. Otherwise, only one of Arizona’s top thirty prospects (as ranked by MLB.com) is a catcher, and Andy Yerzy is an 18-year-old who is struggling to hit in Rookie ball.

D-Backs shouldn’t be extending anyone right now- I don’t care who it is– they are in a horrible position and they need to fire Stewart and start fresh.
aff10
Firing Stewart makes sense, but so does extending Castillo. A full teardown isn’t really necessary since they still have a young team, and I’m not sure Hermann or Hernandez could be counted on moving forward. The window should be open from 2017-2019, so extending Castillo through 2019 (or 2020 if need be) would be a top priority IMO
krillin
I think 2017 would be a stretch. However, I do agree that signing Castillo now would be ideal.
aff10
As Niekro pointed out below the D-Backs have an elite core of players the next few years, which is why I believe that 2017 is a realistic contention time frame. I would put their playoff odds for next year below 50% certainly at the moment, and I certainly understand why you’d view it as a stretch (bullpen depth and the outfield defense scare me for sure), but I think it’s a realistic possibility that they could contend next year with status quo performances from Goldy, Pollock, Greinke, and Lamb
krillin
Yeah, I mean I would love to have that core of players. I just think realistically 2017 probably won’t happen unless they get some management changes too.
sidewinder11
Take away the injuries to Greinke, Pollock, Peralta and others and take away the struggles of Miller and Corbin and the DBacks are at the very least a .500 team this year with a shot at the postseason. Goldy’s been solid as usual and Lamb and Tomas are having breakout years. 2017 isn’t unrealistic for them if the dominoes fall their way
Ry.the.Stunner
You can say that about any team. Take away all the injuries and the bad performances by underperforming players and just about every team is a contender.
DarkGhost
But how many teams have an all star that has missed the whole season, an ace that missed over 6 weeks another outfielder that hit well over .300 last year, as well as 2 other players hitting over .280 in Herman and owings have all missed several weeks? The dbacks have been killed by the injury bug this year way worse than any contending team has.
natsfan3437
Pollock is hurt every year. He’s a great player when healthy but he is never fully healthy
aff10
Not really true. A broken hand on a HBP is more of a fluke than anything else, and there’s no reason to think he hasn’t fully recovered from that. The elbow’s a bit more concerning, since he had this in the minors, but he’s a year removed from playing 157 games
DarkGhost
2015?
One Fan
Why should they not be extending a useful player who is in his prime and plays the key catcher spot? How would they replace him? To say they cannot do anything until they fire Stewart makes no sense
davbee
Why?
krillin
If you are asking why extend him, my guess would be that he is a relatively cheap player at a prime position where the future free agency doesn’t look good for the Diamondbacks. Sure, there are guys like Ramos and Weiters who will be available. But, I doubt the FO would want to get in a bidding war with other teams for them. 2018 is super thin on catchers as well.
Gogerty
True, but hey look at Grienke, they win bidding wars. Haha and they outbid everyone for Shelby Miller.
krillin
That’s exactly why I don’t think they will do it again honestly.
SupremeZeus
When it comes to FA, this Dbacks FO seems to make the wrong call every time. Castillo isn’t going to sign a deal unless the Dbacks drastically overpay. Larussa & Stewart’s jawboning seems to indicate that the Dbacks have limited valuable assets on the big league club that they may willing to move. Castillo may be one of the few guys teams might be interested in and available for a decent return. Their minor league system has a dearth of high end prospects, they have little to no $ to spend in free agency and they are unwilling to trade Pollock, Lamb, or Goldy. The Dbacks are going to be largely the same and going nowhere moving forward. Stewart & Larussa should be fired post haste.
peyton
I think they make good moves on paper that just go wrong out of mostly bad luck. The only one that was an obvious disaster from the get go even if the best case scenario happened was the Miller trade, but even then, it was a “win now” move and they were going all in.
bradthebluefish
Diamondbacks need a good catcher and Castillo fits the bill at what will likely be a reasonable price. I say go for it.
Niekro
Diamondbacks will be fine, with Pollock back they will have one of the best lineups in the NL, they need to do something with the pitching coach because they have too much talent to under perform the way they did. It probably wouldn’t help Miller but guys like Corbin, Ray, Bradley need someone else in their ear. Probably not fair to fire Butcher after one year but if change doesn’t happen fast at start of 2017 they will have to. They still have a ton of payroll flexibility with a billion dollar TV deal and less payroll than the Pirates. This team has a very strong core they just need to figure out how to get their pitchers heads right, Shipley, Bradley, Corbin, Ray all very young. Lamb, Goldschmidt, Pollock one of the best Trios in the game maybe the best.
Connorsoxfan
Rizzo, Bryant, and Schwarber would like to disagree with you. As would Betts, Ortiz, and Bogaerts; Donaldson, Bautista, Encarnacion; Machado, Trumbo, Davis… Etc.
Niekro
None of those are better than Lamb, Goldschmidt and Pollock based on WAR
Niekro
17.9 Lamb, Pollock, Goldschmidt
12.9 Bryant, Rizzo Schwarber
18.6 Bautista, Donaldson, Encarnacion
13.8 Ortiz, Betts, Bogaerts
Not even going to waste my time on the Orioles one this is based on 2015 WAR Lamb was a rookie. Factor in Age against the Blue Jays and its not even close
Don’t believe every thing ESPN tells you about baseball Lamb is every bit as good as the Cubs young players and Pollock and Goldschmidt are two of the best players no one talks about.
Niekro
BTW Goldschmidt and Pollock alone were better than all the Trios you listed with exception of Blue Jays which contains a 33 year old DH and a 35 year old OF
Connorsoxfan
One, Blue Jays are better, yes I get they are aging, but as of now, they are still better. Two, I wasn’t disagreeing that they weren’t good, I very well know they are, but I was just throwing out other trios who could possibly be ahead. Now that I think of it, Bradley Jr. May have more WAR than Ortiz since JBJ plays in the field. Altuve, Springer, and Correa could be up there as well. I wasn’t debating that they weren’t good, just that there could be some better trios as of right now. I think Betts, Bradley, and Bogaerts could eventually grow to become closer anyway.
Connorsoxfan
Rizzo, Bryant and Schwarber; Betts, Bogaerts, Ortiz; and Altuve, Springer and Correa disagree.
Niekro
12.4 on the Astros but they are probably the closest thing to the Dbacks Trio going forward. I don’t think you understand how good Pollock and Goldschmidt are.
aff10
There’s more certainty involved in the Astros’ group, because Pollock represents a bit of a risk with his injury (he seems to be progressing well, but you never know), but I’d take the D-Backs trio over anyone else except Altuve, Correa, and Springer. Obviously though, the Cubs have Zobrist and Fowler and the Red Sox have Bradley and Pedroia as supporting pieces that separate those teams from Arizona
krillin
let me just point out that AJ and Schwarber are both out this year, So technically I have as much WAR as they do and I am a fan. lol.
Connorsoxfan
Umm same with pollock @krillin. I just meant as a pick of 3 given guys on some random night when all are healthy and at the top of their game, there would certainly be other trios in question for who you’d pick. For the future? Only Astros or DBacks would have what anyone would want. Plus, WAR still isn’t a perfect stat. It all depends on what you are looking for in a ball player to judge them.
Connorsoxfan
So does Pollock…
Arizona Diamondbacks
Connorsoxfan, he was referring to Pollock when he said “AJ.”
Connorsoxfan
My bad. Though he was referring to Adam Jones for some reason… I must’ve totally been spacing out while I read it. Not really sure what happened there 🙂
Niekro
It is too early to judge any trade made by this FO but the Toussaint/Gosselin deal is leaning toward the Dbacks. Gosselin is basically a 1.5 to 2 WAR player over a full 162 games and hes league average hitting making the league minimum for next 2 years, Toussaint still cant throw strikes, they also saved 10 million in the Arroyo deal.
After seeing what RP’s went for the Miller deal does not look nearly as bad either, defensive first OF and a blue chip prospect weak pitching prospect would have been an immediate hang up on guys like Sale. Can not fault a team for trying to win now. They are in position to draft another Swanson already he will be replaced. Plus the fact guys like Sale were not even on the table in the off season since everyone was in win mode, everyone but the Braves.
aff10
Agreed on that. The Touissant trade gets a bad rap because it was viewed as a complete salary dump, which I don’t think is fair to Gosselin. I’m not arguing that it was the optimal use of prospect value, which this current FO seems to differ on with the rest of the league, but I don’t have any insight into what other teams were willing to give up for Touissant, and it seems at this point that the D-Backs could very well get more production from Gosselin than the Braves ever get from Touissant, which makes the trade worth it IMO. He’s not a superstar, but he’s a competent major league player, something Touissant might never be
pustule bosey
“That swap has worked out quite nicely for both the D-Backs and Castillo” I mean, castillo has been good for the dbacks but I am sure they would take trumbo’s number’s this year –
Dan LeBlanc
This would be yet another bad deal for the D’Backs. In this market there is NO reason to invest long term in Castillo while the rest of the roster, save Goldschmidt, is in complete disarray.
