The Dodgers are “still trying to move” outfielder Yasiel Puig, tweets Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Puig’s name has popped up in trade rumors lately — most recently surfacing in rumors involving Reds outfielder Jay Bruce.
Puig, as Heyman points out, has seen his overall offensive output decline in each of his four Major League seasons. Now 25 years of age, Puig burst onto the scene in 2013 at the age of 22 with a scintillating .319/.391/.534 slash in 104 games. That was good for an OPS+ of 159, but his OPS+ dipped to 145 in 2014, 110 in 2015 and just 89 in 2016, marking the first season of his career in which he’s actually been a below-average contributor. Puig still draws positive marks from defensive metrics like Ultimate Zone Rating and Defensive Runs Saved, but he no longer looks like the bargain he did during the first two seasons of his career.
Signed to a seven-year, $42MM contract out of Cuba prior to the 2012 season, Puig’s deal allows him to opt into arbitration upon accruing three years of Major League service, which he’s done this year. He’s slated to earn $6.5MM in 2017 and $7.5MM in 2018, but he could stand to earn more via the arbitration process, so he could very well go that route. The three remaining years on Puig’s deal could make him an appealing option for both contenders and rebuilding clubs, although the fact that those three years come at an escalating salary makes it more difficult to ask a team to surrender high-quality talent in return.
All that being said, it remains largely unknown at this point whether there’s significant interest on the market in a player who has had his ups and downs both on and off the field. Heyman notes on Twitter that the Mets, who are among the clubs rumored to be looking at bats, don’t have any interest in Puig. While other contending organizations may have different views of his potential to contribute in 2016 — it’s always tough to know a given team’s front office sees in a player — we certainly haven’t heard rumors of any particular pursuer.
The smart money, perhaps, is on a club that doesn’t have an immediate need for production taking a chance on Puig returning to his established ceiling. Doing so probably means taking on at least some of the remaining financial commitments, which is certainly a deterrent, but it’s possible to imagine a higher-dollar veteran being moved to facilitate a deal. That, presumably, was part of the general thrust of the chatter relating to Bruce. It’s never wise to rule out the creative machinations of the L.A. front office, which has engineered various complicated scenarios in recent years. Unless and until we learn of interest from another team, though, it’s tough to guess at what kind of arrangement might be concocted to lead to a trade of the enigmatic Puig.
brandons-3
Puig to Atlanta, Markakis, Sims, and Gant to Cincinnati, Bruce to Los Angeles.
GreenCustom24
So who’s the odd man out when Mallex comes back? Puig in right, Kemp in left… Inciarte and Mallex?
petfoodfella
Kemp traded to AL club in offseason. IMO, Smith needs to take it easy the rest of the year.
brandons-3
Inciarte and Mallex can play all three spots. Quite frankly, Ender’s bat has been a disappointment thus far and while he’s good enough to start, he hasn’t hit well enough to not play the hotter bat between Inciarte and Mallex.
Ray Ray
Why in the world would the Reds want Markakis?
brandons-3
They would be trading for Markakis the same way the Braves traded for Aybar this offseason, except Markakis is still solid enough to warrant regular at bats. Atlanta kicks in, say, 5 million of the 22 million owed to Markakis the next two years and Reds have someone they can play in right field.
Brixton
The whole desperate desire to move Bruce is 1.) to get value back, and 2.) to open up RF for a younger guy
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
No one wants ericka aybar
BigAlice
Right?
braves4life1
I like it mam!! Keep Mallex and put him in CF, Kemp in LF, Puig in RF. Move Inciarte, Newcomb, Ruiz, and Toussaint for Lucroy
raykraft88
I would not want to pay that price for Lucroy. Would rather see them get Derek Norris for two lower level prospects like Manny Banuelos and Andrew Thurman.
raykraft88
Especially if we’d already traded Sims.
GreenCustom24
What’s with you and gross overpayments?
Gogerty
Huge, huge, huge overpay for Lucroy.
Backatitagain
Whoa partner. I can see the three-way but the Braves can’t take that kind of pounding. I could see Markakis (equivalent to Puig and less trouble) plus a reliever or prospect. Say Markakis and Krol, Cervenka or Withrow (Previous Dodger). Could also go for Markakis plus Whalen, Gant, Banuelos or Bird.
bravosfan4life
Puig isn’t worth that
BlueSkyLA
The ding on Puig is not his ability, or even his discipline (which has improved noticeably), it’s his recurring hamstring injuries. This is the apparent source of his decreased offensive output and has to be the biggest red flag for any potential suitor.
fred-3
Every fan of a team wanting Puig should read this. He’s actually not even much of a diva anymore. He really was never much of a problem, it was just him and Mattingly didn’t get alone.
It’s the injuries, most notably the hamstrings holding him back.
Cam
You guys absolutely nailed it. There’s never really been anything substantial to show that Puig is a real issue in the clubhouse – it’s all ceased and reporters have moved on to the next flavor of the month.
Even when he’s not on the DL – the hamstrings have to be having an effect on his play.
Brixton
I mean, an unknown former teammate and Zack Grienke both openingly had issues with him. Plus even if he has had an injury, he has hit in forever.
No one is gonna give up much value for him
fred-3
You got a link? I know Greinke threw his luggage on the streets, but again, that was 2-3 years when Mattingly was there and he had no support. The team is a little different than it was than, which was full of vets.
It’s tough to to think that he just stopped hitting at of a sudden at age 25. Hell, even with the down year .5 he still has a career 132 wRC+
Cam
Heh, is there anyone Greinke does like?
I miss that guy,
BlueSkyLA
Kershaw I guess. Those two were joined at the hip.
Bottom line, every clubhouse is bound to have some politics, and if they become negative it’s rarely going to be on account of only one player.
csamson11
Ben Franklin and Dave Stewart seem like they’d be pretty high on his list of friends.
BlueSkyLA
Thanks for the agreement. This must surely be the End Times we’ve been hearing so much about. 🙂
ASapsFables
Yet another reason for Puig going to the White Sox, a team that at least is a contender for the best training staff in MLB with Herm Schneider at the helm. LOL
1738hotlinebling
I have been wanting my Royals to aquire this guy for a while, I think he would make a great fit in KC, I just think the problem with Puig is they just do not find any humor in his antics , while the Royals are all about them , between post game gatorade splashes, and the team worshiping Fetty Wap’s 1738 and so on
2017 —
– Escobar SS
– Gordon LF
– Moustakas 3B
– Hosmer 1B
– Cain CF
– Puig RF
– Mondesi 2B
– Perez C
– Cuthbert/Merrifield DH
now thats a scary lineup
guille
A lineup where esky bats leadoff is not scary, it’s laughable. Bonus points for bunching all LHH together
Brixton
I mean, it’s kind of scary if Escobar, Gordon, Puig, Mondesi and Moustakas actually hit, which aren’t givens.
Then it becomes somewhat less scary when half of it leaves after 2017
ranger421
Atlanta say no to Puig!!!
Gnotorious
I could see the Dodgers, reds and braves hooking up on a 3 team trade. Dodgers get Bruce, braves get Puig and Reds get Fried and Dykstra.
bravesred 2
DOB says the Braves have no interest in Puig. twitter.com/DOBrienAJC/status/759903355422535680
GreenCustom24
It would also leave one of Mallex and Inciarte out. They’d need to package one for something big rather than waste one in a backup role.
hanks1hammer
Thanks for the link. I am heartened to see that. Im not a big fan of Puig and the idea of Atlanta attempting to “bring out his inner star.” If the price were right then sure, but as suggested above, I would prefer to hold on to Fried.
petfoodfella
I don’t see anywhere Atlanta has said they’re interested, not sure why people think they are.
wsox1976
I just have this bad feeling the White Sox will trade for him lol. That’s just the way our team loves to do business
TDKnies 2
So are we thinking something like Dodgers want Bruce, Puig goes somewhere X, Reds get prospects from X? With more minor pieces thrown every which way to even it out depending on where the money goes? Or is it possible the Dodgers are looking to trade Puig even without another trade lined up?
dodgers4life357
Bye puig
bravesfan 7
Before anyone says anything, DOB said the braves have no interest in Puig
newyorkstankees
Would love to see Yankees get involved. Beltran and Ben Gamel or Ellsbury and eat some money. Dodgers ideally want Bruce (all bat, no defense-similar to Beltran), Gamel gives them a guy with some control. Dodgers have all the money in the world it seems, Ellsbury is still an above average bat. That’s my rationale for either scenario, for what it’s worth. Thoughts?
beyou02215
I still say that Cleveland makes a lot of sense, especially having moved Frazier, as long as the $ can be worked out.
su19
Puig for hellickson
sportbiz
I’d say Hellickson and gomez for puig
soundwave
Hmmm Beltran sounds do able. But what about puig for shaw and one or two prospects?
Matt Galvin
Beltran/Nova/Sabathia to Dodgers Bellinger,Holmes,Montias and others to Yankees?
Puig and others to Rays for Moore,Colome?
Bruce,Norris to Rangers,Gallio,Ortiz to Padres and Brinson another Bat to Reds?
Lucroy,Smith to Dodgers,Grandel,Garza to Red Sox,Delon,Owens,Johnson and others to Brewers?
Pineda to Giants for Crick,Blackburn,Heston?
Gardner,McCann to Indians for Allen and so on?
wsox1976
That’s some trading but no
dsm6780
Switch Sabathia and Nova with Tanaka and you have something
dsm6780
Tanaka and Pineda
grumpydodgerfan
that kind of trade ramble is the problem in LA since the new FO. A swirling vortex of players changing teams all over the place, but nobody seems to *actually* get measurably better.
kled
Im torn on Puig as a Dodger fan. On one hand he still has the potential and he has made the effort plus if he’s going good he’s the rh bat the team needs. On the other hand dude strains his hammy every other day and can’t be depended on. Plus he seems to only produce when there is no pressure on him.
braves4life1
Get Puig in Atlanta, and move Kemp, Vizcaino, Newcomb, and Toussaint to the Yankees for McCann and Pineda
bravesred 2
Newcomb alone is worth more than McCann and Pineda. Stop with your baseball game trades for the other team.
hanks1hammer
You are suggesting to trade the Braves, presently, best pitching prospect and one of our best low level prospects for a catcher who is near to the end of his years of being productive and for Puig who has not yet ceased to decline in production? And what is your fascination for Linda anyway? Have a thing for 4-5 starters or something?
I have a soft spot for McCann also but trading for him would be a bad idea right now
Gogerty
I think best trade for McCann is if Yanks pay half. He is still top 7 C in most offensive categories (drop off from 4 to 7 in BA is dramatic though). 20HR and 60-70 RBIs is worth $8.5 for his leadership.
AngelFan69
The Dodgers need mid relievers and the Angels need an outfielder … Puig and a minor leaguer to the Angels for Street and Smith …
kled
I’ll take Smith, not Street, he’s horrible. Didn’t he give up 5 runs in the 9th today? Dodgers have enough guys that can do that.
sweetmarie
Read my mind. If he does turn back into a diva again, Pujols would surely slap some sense into him. Wouldn’t be the first time!
Perfect buy low opportunity the Halos need.
macbeck123
Puig to Indians
billysbballz
How about this idea? Puig to Yanks for Elsbury and Yanks eat $30 mil on Els contract. Also add Tanaka in deal and get top end prospect back. Now LA has legit leadoff hitter in CF and a second ace.
kled
Don’t need a CF. Definitely not Ellsbury! Joc struggles at times, but he’s just as good defensively with better power. Dodgers need a corner guy.
dsm6780
Why would the Dodgers trade for an older, more expensive OF who isn’t any better? Maybe Puig for Tanaka, but you aren’t passing off Ellsbury’s miserable contract without giving up something solid also
yanksfan23
Really hope the yanks get in on this guy. Perfect buy-low candidate. He fits perfectly with their current plan of getting younger as he is 25 and has 2.5 years of control. Besides the yankees are so boring these days, this guy will bring electricity in the ballpark.
Minotaur20
Puig for shields
thatdank1
How about deal w ChiSox.
Quintana and Milky (or Eaton but he’d take more) for Puig / De Leon (or Urias?) / Barnes / Verdugo
drum18
Beltran and Nova to LA for Puig.
Yanks can take on the financials and hope a 25-year-old makes the most of his talent and keeps his legs fresh by DHing sometimes. Hicks in the fourth OF and there’s a glut of OF in the system.
billysbballz
No don’t think so
They would have dump salary like Gardner or Headley or Elsbury to take on Puig.
dsm6780
That makes no sense for the Dodgers. Hard pass
newfibluejay
I say the jays trade Saunders for him if they can’t resign Saunders. By now the should at the very least have an idea if wat Saunders wants 45-50 over 3 is fine anymore c if u can trade him for puig at least we will have an awesome defensive out field and a chance at 50 dingers between Upton/pillar/puig with 30+SB from the first 2. Out of the 3 big FA’s we have let joey bats go sign Edwin for sure if not Saunders then. Pompey becomes our 4th out fielder he cansteal 20+ not much pop from him maybe 10 hr at best but he’s hitting over .280 last I checked in the off season focus on signing donaldson for 5-7 years 20+ I would easily c. Keep in mind trying to keep Edwin bats and Saunders means we won’t b able to keep donaldson stroman and Sanchez in the long run. A martin trade for lucroy other prices involved might be a good ideas also I love martin but he makes about 20 mill how many 20mill guys can u have on a 140-160 payroll…….. Please leave ur thought I love reading comments and wanna no if ppl think I’m right wrong a dumbbum or a genius
Woozebag9
Why would you trade Saunders when he’s having a great yr and a reason for why you’re in the wildcard/AL East race? You’re right on the expected market salary. Realistically, you’d have to pay that for him. However, you can give him a QO and get draft pick compensation for him. Huge risk to trade him because you’re trying to win now.
newfibluejay
I like Saunders better but the wat I Kent was if he won’t sign for that now I think puig is better that a draft pick 20th or lower cuz up to the 10th is protected I believe
ASapsFables
Yasiel Puig might be a good fit for the White Sox who appear to be in their customary retool mode once again. The White Sox have had success with Cuban born players dating back to when Minnie Minosa was a star player on many of those “Go-Go” teams in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Jose Abreu is their latest Cuban star and seems in need of a boost with his hitting of late, something that Puig might provide alongside him in the middle of an anemic White Sox batting order.
Acquiring Puig could be an especially worthwhile risk if bench coach Rick Renteria was to replace Robin Ventura as manager. Renteria speaks fluent Spanish and has been an excellent developer of Latino players throughout his professional coaching and managing career. He was credited with Starlin Castro’s turn around as Cub manager in 2014, as well as struggling first baseman Anthony Rizzo’s. Renteria would likely still be at the helm on the North Side if not for the unexpected availability of Joe Maddon at that conclusion of that season. Hopefully he will get another opportunity to manage in Chicago on the South Side.
cardsfan1988
Don’t know if Cardinals necessarily need outfield help, but what about Puig to St. Louis? Not exactly sure what it would take to get him but it may be an organization and club he could really thrive in
Garmo87
Puig to Rangers for Choo. Opens money up for the Rangers.
dsm6780
Why would the Dodgers want Choo? How about Puig for Profar, Chi Chi, and Mazarra? Makes about as much sense as Choo for Puig…
OCTraveler
Puig. Deleon and any player on Dodger roster not named Kershaw, Seager or Maeda
OCTraveler
To the White Sox fore Sale
grumpydodgerfan
Puig and Kemp, playing together again, even for a short time. Now that’s almost funny.
Gogerty
No please, just no.
darenh
Lots of reasons a deal centering on Braun and Puig makes sense.
Pjzza
Puig to Boston for Rusney Castillo and Brian Johnson.
Phillies2017
I would love to get Puig- like he is a guy who I would eat the money on to give up less in terms of prospects.
dsm6780
Teams don’t have to eat the money. He makes $6 million a year. Any team acquiring Puig is going to have to give up a solid MLB piece
dsm6780
Also, in what world have the Dodgers ever looked for a team to “eat money” in a deal?? Look at how many guys they are paying not to play for them
ronk
If the offers the Dodgers are getting on Puig look anything like the garbage I’ve read on these boards, they better just keep him.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Puigs situation is like starlin Castro a change if scenery will help him.
ronk
A) What about Castro’s numbers have shown anything has helped?
B) Castro’s decline wasn’t due to nagging injuries, he just doesn’t hit. Puig’s hammies explode at random.
C) Should the Dodgers care what a change of scenery does? They need corner OF help. Hes a corner OF. Unless they can improve in some way, why even trade him?
BlueSkyLA
Exactly. Puig’s defensive abilities alone are very difficult if not impossible to duplicate, and nobody I’ve heard proposed to replace him in RF offers such a large offensive upgrade that it offsets the loss on the defense side. Bruce sure doesn’t do it. But for all we know they are thinking Toles is his replacement.
ASapsFables
Would a straight trade of Melky Cabrera for Puig solve the Dodgers corner OF dilemma?
dsm6780
No not even anywhere close
ASapsFables
And Jay Bruce would?
I’d be inclined to take switch-hitting Melky Cabrera and his .312/.359/.473 slash over Bruce’s .265/.316/.559 metric. Speaking of which, Cabrera has also posted a 1.8 WAR thus far in 2016 including a 2.3 oWAR compared to Bruce’s 0.7 WAR and 2.1 oWAR. Neither are Gold Glove candidates in the OF but Cabrera still bests Bruce in the dWAR department, significantly so. Cabrera doesn’t possess Bruce’s power but he is a solid contact hitter who rarely strikes out, the antithesis of Bruce at the plate.
Did I mention that Cabrera is also clutch?
That both have similar remaining dollars on their contracts and team control through 2017 with Bruce’s team option being exercised following the 2016 season, as expected?
hammertime510
Puig, De Leon, Verdugo, Holmes and Barnes for Sonny Gray, Reddick and Resypnski.
dsm6780
Actually one of the first proposals that makes sense. Dodgers get an OF to replace Puig for the season, get a solid arm for the rotation
ASapsFables
Also a proposal that has not been speculated on by any reporter with only hours left before the trade deadline. Anything is possible with Billy Beane but time is running out, especially with a rental like Josh Reddick involved. None of these players will pass through August waivers either.
sweetmarie
How often does a player of his caliber ever truly stop hitting at age 25, without being injured? Obviously teams learn to exploit your weakness, but if the hamstring is really the main problem here I’d think a lot of teams would be interested. He could definitely turn back into his old self, especially with a change of scenery. Best case you could flip him if he has a good year, and worst case it’s a wash. Worth a shot for non-competing teams I’d think. Heck with that arm turn him into another Chapman on the mound lol
nightsunny
Choo?
Ichiro would be better.
cjh815
I just heard puig is going to braves with bueher in exchange for Erick aybar and ptbnl
cjh815
I just heard that puig and buehler are going to Atlanta for Erick aybar and ptbnl
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
That’s the dumbest trade in the history of trades. Ericka aybar isn’t even average. He’s the same exact player cody Ross is. He’s pest so in no bids he’s the most dangerous hitter. The hardest ball he would hit would be a weak grounder that doesn’t make it to the dirt and the infield is back. Why would L.A. trade for a SS with no where to play with Corey Seager at short?
