Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval has changed agents, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). The veteran will now be represented by the Beverly Hills Sports Council.
Sandoval, 29, is entering the second season of a five-year, $95MM deal signed last winter. He had spent his entire career to that point with the Giants organization.
That first year in Boston certainly did not go as planned, as he ended the campaign with a career-worst .245/.292/.366 slash and ten home runs over 505 plate appearances. With poor marks for his defense and baserunning factored in, Sandoval was one of the game’s worst everyday players.
Of course, there’s plenty of reason to believe a turnaround is possible. After all, Sandoval carried a .294/.346/.465 batting line in over 3,000 plate appearances as a Giant. And while defensive metrics have wavered somewhat on his value with the glove, he was no worse than average in the aggregate and certainly never had a a season as lightly-regarded as 2015.
Regardless of how things go, Sandoval will be under contractual control with the Red Sox through at least the 2019 campaign (unless, of course he’s dealt). His deal also includes a team option for 2020.

Don’t forget the $5MM buyout if the Red Sox do not exercise the option. Effectively the Sox signed Sandoval for 5 years $100MM guaranteed.
That’s included in the 95.
The contract that got Cherington fired.
Actually if we were to point to a single contract I’d say Hanley was Cherington’s undoing. Hanley’s attitude issues leading to his regression were easier to see coming than Sandoval’s season.
Hanley’s attitude was hardly a problem. Going forward Hanley looks to have more value then Pablo.
Will go with that also. His attitude is not nearly as bad as was Manny’s was and his bat has much more potential than does that of Sandoval.
Many Sox fans simply fell in love with what Sandoval did over a short span in the post season and were screaming to sign him loudly. Whether or not ownership pressured Cherrington to sign him from that may never be known, but it was a poor mistake from the beginning from many who knew this guy was a terrible health risk, hacker and twin to Fielder body wise and now they are stuck with one of the most immovable contracts in the game due to pier fan pressure..
I’ve though about that too. But at least Hanley can slide into the DH after this season. I bet he’ll do well there. Bottom line more what got Cherington fired is nothing except the Miller trade worked out after 2013. And the Lackey trade is the worst I can remember as a Red Sox fan (other than Bagwell)
david Ortiz will dh not hanly. he will play first
Ortiz can’t DH after Ortiz retires buddy! I wish… I’m a sox fan too ;(
Cherington quit when DD was hired. He wasn’t fired.
Unless he loses some of that 30 lbs he put on after signing I would not bet on a rebound.
30# he added since in Bawston + the 20# he should of dropped b/c he was already over weight…
Hope Beverly Hills Sports Council is a fancy name for a gym.
Lol
And this comment shows why it is a shame they took away up arrows. ^^
Ha
They have a better buffet in the lobby.
He’s better than he played last year. By June, Nick Cafardo will be running puff pieces on him with quotes from “unnamed AL executives” saying Panda is in the best shape he’s been in since he was a rookie…
When I read the headline I thought he joined some high-priced Beverly Hills weight loss facility. Wishful thinking I guess.
I’m guessing he got some advice from them that he didn’t get from his last agent. Shape up and play better or you’ve gotten your last contract.
I am sure all “wise=comments” come from guys very well fit with a perfect height/weight ratio and a perfect diet. Obesity was eradicated long time ago in USA after all,, was not it?
That being said, it is hard to believe that Sandoval is happy being overweight and has not tried to get some control over it. He has money not only to buy burgers, fries and such but to get help from specialists many ordinary people cannot afford..
I am certainly not in shape. Then again, I am not an athlete, and I did not take one hundred million dollars from somebody for my athletic abilities. I also did not get myself into relatively decent shape in order to score a huge contract, then let myself balloon back up before I had even begun day #1 of honoring it.
I do not support “shaming” anybody, but he certainly deserves criticism especially from fans of the team paying him. If it bothers him, it is not hard to figure out what to do about it.
If he really wants to get his life straight he needs to lose his brother, who has been his advisor/agent interloper! His brother has interfered way too much! I wouldn’t be surprised if it was his previous agent that actually dropped him as a client! But, he said he wanted more freedom to do what he wanted… How’s that turning out Pablo?
Id say its turning out quite well for him hes got a guaranteed 100 million coming his way over the next 4 years.
Touché pocc!! Haha!
We loved him in San Francisco. You take the good with the bad with the big guy.. long, frustrating slumps… magic, big-time moments. I still root for the guy to win over Boston, and still believe it will happen.
If he put up numbers like Prince Fielder, his weight wouldn’t be an issue. But he doesn’t, nor is he likely to. Just dropping some reasonable weight would likely help him out tremendously. I was not a fan of his signing, and I’m still not, but I think he has the potential to have a better upside than Ham-Ram overall, if he were to get to a reasonable weight.
IMO his 2015 was a fluke. It’s discouraging that it was literally bad enough to put him at the bottom of the league but he has performed well previously over a large sample size. I look for him to have a bounceback year. As an Orioles fan I hope I’m wrong but he has been to good for to long to automatically assume 2015 was the new panda.
