Now that the non-tender deadline has passed, we have a clearer picture of which arbitration eligible players will be on each team’s Opening Day roster. Of course, trades and multiyear extensions will change this, but here’s a snapshot of each team’s projected arbitration spending for 2016. (Players such as A.J. Ellis, Justin Smoak, Vance Worley and others that have already avoided arbitration are still included in these totals, but with their actual 2016 salaries in place of MLBTR’s projection.) For more information, check out our arbitration tracker and our individual salary projections by Matt Swartz.

Does the arbitration system take into account off-field issues? If so, it will be interesting to see what number the Reds file for Chapman. And will the MLB investigation be concluded before the hearings?

I don’t think it takes into account off-field issues. It might, but my thinking is that it doesn’t because it doesn’t take into account injuries the player may currently have (Greg Holland would be a good case, as he’s projected to miss most basically the entire year, but was projected to make $10 million under arbitration).

I believe arbitration hearings take into account off the field incidents, along with every other thing that may affect a players value. All that stuff gets presented as part of a case that a team prepares as to why a player is worth a certain amount, and the player will also present their own case for their figure. Contract values are often the midpoint between those figures. But, if I remember correctly, teams aren’t allowed to offer a contract that’s less than 80% of a players previous contract, which is why players arbitration numbers don’t fluctuate, but steadily rise. Worst case scenario, Chapman makes the same amount he did last year, which is totally fine with the Reds because they don’t need the money to acquire anything, and after this year he’s a free agent anyway.

Thanks…the number reflected him, so that stays the same.
