The Mariners announced that they have designated left-hander and former No. 2 overall draft pick Danny Hultzen for assignment. Additionally, the team has purchased the contracts of infielder Patrick Kivlehan and outfielder Boog Powell, thereby adding them to the 40-man roster and protecting them from the Rule 5 Draft.
Selected second overall back in 2011, Hultzen’s career has been plagued by consistent shoulder problems that have limited the soon-to-be-26-year-old to a total of just 167 2/3 innings as a professional. He’s out of options and can be outrighted to the minors if he clears waivers. While Hultzen would technically be available for selection in the Rule 5, he was shut down due to shoulder issues this past July and didn’t pitch again after that point.
He would make a prime rule 5 pick if he is still dealing with the shoulder. Team can take him and stash on the DL
They could claim him on waivers, and not have the other non-sense. OTOH, if he can’t stay healthy, pass.
Very true. Does not count against 40 man if on the 60 day DL if I remember correctly.
Correct, but only during the season.
Rule 5 picks have to be on the 25 man MLB roster. And need to be be active from the DL for a minimum of 90 days during the year. That is a stretch considering his injury history.
True, but you can also carry that over to the next season. Braves are nearing completion of their claim of Daniel Winkler in that manner.
Well that’s unfortunate. He had all the potential in the world when he was drafted. I could see a team like the Phillies or White Sox taking a flyer on him in the rule 5 if they can stash him
hope Yankees claim him or get him some how.
I was hoping the big three label would stick to the majors, but alas, Hultzen couldn’t stay healthy, which is a bummer. Hope he can stay healthy enough to pitch again.
Have a feeling trade between the Braves, Reds, or Yankees is coming as Hultzen and few others are headed to one of those teams.
No way he goes unclaimed on waivers. Still too young with potential.
Mario Mendoza created the Line…but was a GREAT glove!!!
