The Giants announced that they have selected the contracts of outfielder Mac Williamson and catcher Trevor Brown from Triple-A. To clear room on the 40-man roster, Joe Panik has been transferred to the 60-day DL, and outfielder Daniel Carbonell has been designated for assignment, per Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area (Twitter link).
Carbonell, now 24 years old, signed a four-year, $3.5MM contract with the Giants last summer after defecting from Cuba. Though he performed exceptionally well last season in the low minors, he struggled in the Arizona Fall League and looked similarly overmatched in 2015, batting just .146/.173/.194 in 218 plate appearances at the Double-A level. Carbonell’s bat was said to be raw at the time of his signing, with scouts praising his glovework and speed over his bat.

Better get Williamson in the lineup ASAP so Byrd’s option doesn’t vest. I like Byrd but I’m not sure 8 million for a 39 y/o outfielder who would probably be splitting time with Aoki is a wise allocation of cash that should go to the rotation.

I’m curious as to what source(s) media members use for salaries? Cot’s, Baseball-Reference, Spotrac, ESPN, USA Today, or other? I consistently see inaccurate salaries reported.
As I understand, Carbonell signed a $1.4M deal. That was a $1M signing bonus and $100K per year for four years, guaranteed. There is a stipulation that his MLB salaries would be: 500K in 2014, 525K in 2015, 550K in 2016, and 600K in 2017.
Anyways, IMO, it was a good risk to take for the Giants. It only cost money. It hasn’t worked out so far. But most prospects simply don’t make it. It’s a tough gauntlet to get through. I might compare Carbonell to the Orioles’ Elier Leyva. And I’m still hoping for the best for young Daniel Carbonell. It might be worth remembering that Daniel had spent a long time without playing pro ball, dropped switch-hitting, and had a lot of cultural/life adjustments to make in a short span.

Will he be able to elect free agency, or will the Giants maintain his rights
