The Mets view prospects such as center fielder Brandon Nimmo, shortstop Gavin Cecchini, and right-hander Michael Fulmer as trade chips in a possible deal, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweets. Meanwhile, Puma also hears that the Mets are not anxious to move Jon Niese since they may need his innings going forward. Marc Carig of Newsday (on Twitter) hears that the Mets feel they have enough talent in the system to get help at the deadline.
On Sunday morning, Cafardo wrote that there’s currently a feeling in the organization that the Mets will make a move for a hitter in the coming days with Niese being the outgoing asset. Niese has been pitching well as of late, but that hasn’t sold everyone.
“It changes nothing for me,” an NL exec told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News. “Stuff has gotten lighter every year. The Mets are going to tell everyone it’s as good as ever to keep trade value high.”
Nimmo, 22, was the Mets’ No. 13 overall pick in the 2011 draft. The center fielder has spent the bulk of the year in Double-A Binghamton and has hit .284/.346/.373 in 260 plate appearances. Coming into the year, Nimmo was ranked as the No. 45 prospect in the country by Baseball America while Fulmer was rated No. 98. All three prospects are former first-round selections.

Watching the Mets “offense?” today, they should see if HOJO, Strawberry, or Bobby Bo can still hit. Anything…
Ray Ray
They are still paying Bobby Bo, so maybe they MIGHT look him up. 🙂

So the Mets need a future SS, yet they are willing to trade Cecchini.
Matt McCarron 3
I could see them taking a win-now approach. There aren’t too many places for the Mets to upgrade offensively. They aren’t going to change their 3B/C/RF or 1B. Flores has been one of their better bats, I don’t see them benching Cuddyer because hes owed 12.5M next year, and then you have a guy in Lagares who makes up for his bat with his defense.
Only logical spot to upgrade would be SS, meaning if they were to trade Cecchini, they would have SS covered until atleast the offseason, where they could then make a move for a Alexei/Desmond/Rollins in free agency, or make a move for a JJ Hardy or Tulo on the trade market
rct
Eh, I can’t see them taking a win-now approach. They’re set up for 2016 and beyond, it would be a pretty big course change at this point.
Also, Alexei and Rollins would be bad signings and they’re not going to offer the kind of money Desmond wants.
Matt McCarron 3
Right now, I’m not sure Desmond does any better than Jose Reyes did, I’m not even sure he reaches 100M.
I’m banking that Alexei is just having a down season.
rct
Yeah, that’s a good point. What a mistake on his part to turn down their offer last offseason.
Matt Galvin
Can get those in Trades if come available.

Put me in the crowd that just doesn’t get it. They have five legit pitchers right now who aren’t prospects anymore but aren’t earning any money yet. I know it seems crazy to break up Harvey/Wheeler/DeGrom/Matz/Syndergaard, but just trading any one would get the bat they desperately need.
It’s not like they have to trade Harvey for Miguel Cabrera or anything crazy, but surely Syndergaard would net you a couple of decent MLB hitters. Their offense is just pathetically bad for such a great pitching staff.

The Mets say they want to protect their young arms and Niese isn’t going to get them much. Colon has started looking like he’s finally at the end of the line, so they should keep Niese around. I think he’s going to end up being useful to them.

So that’s what the Mets mean by “overpaying” for Zobrist. Nimmo, Cecchini and/or Fulmer. I’m sure Beane takes 2 or all 3 of those for Zorilla in a nanosecond.
Gautham Pawnday
Yeah these names would certainly qualify as an overpay, but I think that Beane would have pulled the trigger if that was the case. Two first rounders that are already in AA for a two month rental – either the names are wrong or Beane truly believes he can do better in a bidding war or even make the playoffs.
hojostache
WAY too much for a 2mon rental player who isn’t crushing like he typically does.

Martino is so full of it. Which “NL Exec” is calling Andy Martino in NY to tell him that? Nice try Martino. Your stuff is garbage, as always.

SS-Brad Miller of the Mariners, and CF- Gerrardo Parra in Milwaukee would be perfect fits for the Mets. SP- Fulmer, SS-Gavin Cecchini, and/or CF/RF Brandon Nimmo should be plenty to acquire those two players.
chicothekid
Parra would be a nice addition, but isn’t particularly cost effective. For a team like the Mets, cost is important. They aren’t in a position to splurge right now, and not for a guy who is usually a 4th OF because of his bat. Maybe later, but certainly not now.
As for Miller, I think the word is out. A couple of years ago, Seattle had a couple of REALLY good options, the future was bright and prices were sky high. Fast forward a couple of years…. They already unloaded Franklin on the Rays. It took the Rays all of 2 months to send him to AAA and they aren’t happy about it. Now we keep hearing rumors that the Mariners are in the market for a new SS, even though they still have Miller, who IS MLB ready. Hmmmm.
I don’t see this one happening either.
mrobingomets
The Mets need to score 4 runs to win. Why not go get a decent bat off the bench and a base-stealer so they can push a run or tow across in late innings. I’m thinking a Ben Revere and bring back Marlon Byrd? Or bring up a minor leaguer with speed and Conforto – yes? no?
edgardoalfonzo 2
I wouldn’t even be mad if we just traded Dilson Herrera back for Marlon Byrd. If that gets us to the playoffs this year then it’s worth it.
