The Yankees have designated reliever David Carpenter for assignment, the club announced. The move creates roster space for the activation of Masahiro Tanaka.
Carpenter, 29, came to the Yankees from the Braves along with lefty Chasen Shreve in an offseason trade that sent Manny Banuelos to Atlanta. The righty was a very solid performer in his two years with the Braves, but has struggled thus far in pinstripes.
Over 18 2/3 innings this year, Carpenter owns a 4.82 ERA. He has struck out just 11 batters in that span — after averaging about 10 K/9 over the two seasons prior — while walking eight. On the positive side, Carpenter’s fastball velocity is still sitting right at the 95 mph mark.
All said, Carpenter figures to draw a decent bit of interest from other teams. His $1.275MMÂ salary is manageable enough, and his track record and maintained velocity offer a more promising combination than can usually be found this time of year.

DODGERS JUMP ON THIS
dodgerskingsfan
yes and please dfa chris hatcher… man isn’t getting the job done!!!!!
BoldyMinnesota
I doubt he’ll get that far, probably a team like Toronto, Detroit or Minnesota will get him before he reaches the NL
JacobyWanKenobi
Yes! He was just a throw in to the Shreve trade anyway.
MB923
I think you have that in reverse. Shreve had little experience. Carpenter was dominant with the Braves. But turns out, the opposite has happened. Shreve is the Yankees (or Has Been the Yankees) best reliever not named Miller or Betances.
JacobyWanKenobi
Th-that was the joke, yes
MB923
Sorry, my sarcasm meter has been way off lately. Guess marriage, honeymoon and moving to a new home will do that lol
HappyNonSuicidalMustacheMasher
All those things are related to a woman… Thats what they will do to you!
Frittoman626
Surprised the Yankees actually DFA’d him as I would have just DFA’d Rogers since he’s even worse and Capuano is going to the pen, but won’t lie when saying that Carp was 2013 Joba bad for the Yankees. Maybe going back to the NL will be the best for him.
Sleeper
Rogers has been of some use at least, Carpenter hasn’t given them anything at all, I don’t think there’s been a single outing where he did his job to this point, and I can at least think of a few times Rogers has. With Tanaka starting with an 85 max pitch count today, that length could be of more value. Eventually, NY will choose between Cap and Rogers because they’re effectively the exact same role, but for now, this was the best move for them.
Sleeper
He’s a solid reclamation project someone if you want to claim him or trade something light during the process. He was getting pretty hard to keep throwing out there though, it was the best move for them. He’s bound to be better than what he’s shown this year, but NY doesn’t have the ability to play the waiting game forever, and he’s been the clear worst reliever on the team.
vwnut13 2
Just one more out and he would have had the same ERA as Craig Kimbrel.
Vmmercan
Thank God we didn’t give up any still young, potentially high-ceiling prospects for him.
Can we just stop making trades with the Braves involving pitchers?
MB923
lol, only Braves pitcher who had worked out (Sort Of) to the Yankees is Boone Logan. Though the Boone Logan/Javy Vazquez for Melky (and a prospect, I think Vizccaiano) was almost a lose/lose. Melky and Vazquez were the key pieces and both were Horrible
Vmmercan
Ha, yeah, the one saving grace is Vizcaino didn’t work out and Melky didn’t do well over there.
But yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever be excited about trading for a Braves’ pitcher again. Even Jaret Wright coming from there turned into a disaster.
Banuelos has solid numbers in AAA through 10 starts, but same old walk issues.
Phantom Stranger
The Braves will never forgive the Yankees for foisting Melky on us.
MB923
It was a lose/lose trade
aneternalenigma
I wonder if the Braves try bringing him back.
Bravos fan
Braves should bring carpenter back to get McDowell to getting back on track…worth a flyer with the current pen
R.D.
meanwhile let’s look at manbans numbers…
Hope the braves snatch him back up and end up with two David Carpenters in the bullpen
Jo JoAnne
I would have rather seen the Yankees designate Wilson.. With Capuano moving to the pen they now have 4 lefty’s..
Sleeper
Wilson has started to turn it around a bit though, he’s given them a decent outing the last few times out. Not surprised it was Carpenter over him, none of their bullpen pieces are specialists so the proportions of right handed to left handed isn’t all that dire.
MB923
I could be wrong, but I think Wilson’s ERA is so high because Carpenter allowed many of his inherited runs to score. I’m not saying Wilson Isn’t at fault, but if Carpenter did his job, I can bet Wilson would have a Much better ERA
Hitters aren’t exactly attacking him – .210/.310/.290, and his WHIP isn’t very high (1.18), but the issue does seem to be his BB rate (4.1). He also hasn’t allowed a HR yet this year. So I’m led to believe it’s from inherited runners whom most likely were scored after Carpenter came in? Just a guess.
Michael L
Agreed. Wilson’s FIP is only 3.06! His high ERA is not his fault.
Jo JoAnne
Agreed.. I had forgotten that Martin will be back shortly as well.. When he comes back the Yankees will probably option Wilson or Lindgren to AAA.. Unless they finally cut Rogers loose..
My original comment was based solely on the fact that the Yankees had so many lefty’s in their pen..
MB923
Justin Wilson has options left. I don’t think they’d DFA him.
batman
Great trade for my pirates 🙂 Wilson can be good, but hes crazy inconsistent
MB923
As you can see my post above, only his ERA is bad and I believe that was due to Carpenter allowing XBH after XBH. Wilson is getting out righties And lefties. His issue is only walks
Very glad to see Gazoo doing well for Pittsburgh.
batman
ah just read it thanks, i liked Wilson when he was Pittsburgh. Havent been able to follow him to closely since obviously. He has the stuff to be a very good late innings guy
Jeffy25
Someone is going to grab him.
I still miss him from the Cards system

Man I that fastball he threw in the playoffs was flaaaaaat
