The A’s announced that they have acquired right-hander Deck McGuire from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. The former first-round pick was designated for assignment last week.
McGuire struggled in his first exposure to Triple-A at age 25, posting a 5.56 ERA in 55 innings with 6.2 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9. The promotion to the highest level of the minors came after McGuire posted a 2.98 ERA over 60 1/3 innings in his fourth go at Double-A.

Keep adding that depth.

So he’s obviously gonna go 13-4 with a 2.86 ERA for the A’s next year as their 5th starter, knowing how they work.

Last time the A’s acquired someone from the Jays for cash it turned out to be Jesse Chavez.
Jaysfan724
Well the A’s also could have had Encarnacion so I guess if you want to call that a trade-off, though losing EE is more vulnerable than Chavez in hindsight
thegoldenone
Could have had?? a’s did own his rights for a few days. Was a glorious time in his career under A’s ownership.
Jaysfan724
That’s what I meant by could have had…they had him and non-tendered him.

The A’s have a good eye in evaluating talent. I’d be nervous anytime someone from that organization wanted my DFA’s.
letsgogiants
Who knows though whether or not Encarnacion becomes the hitter he is today with the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays have been known to turn hitter’s careers around in the right direction.
Jaysfan724
And actually the last person the A’s acquired from the Jays was Kenny Wilson, but we’ll just let Kenny keep being Kenny.
Jaysfan1994 2
It wasn’t for cash though, it was a waiver claim.
Erik Trenouth
A’s never claimed Chavez from the Jays
Jaysfan1994 2
I’m talking about Kenny Wilson’s transaction.
Erik Trenouth
That was meant to be to your original post

I said he was “traded for cash”, so what post are you reading?

What’s your point? I never said he was “claimed” so your post is irrelevant.
I said he was “acquired for cash” which is not being claimed. He was traded like Deck was today.

Jesus, Billy Beane is out to salvage every lost pitcher from the 1st round of the 2010 draft.
Next headline: Athletics sign Hayden Simpson for $1.

Dylan Covey, Drew Pomeranz and Deck McGuire right? Dang, just need to sign Barrett Loux too
BrettLawriesnewesttattoo
how much would cash considerations be? minor league salary? more?
agureghian
could be anything.
Brad Mills was traded for 1 dollar, remember?
BrettLawriesnewesttattoo
haha no i didn’t know that. that’s funny. so i guess the Jays are just trading McGuire so they don’t have to pay the rest of his 2014 AAA salary. that’s quite a decline for a guy who was on the Jays top ten prospect list two or three years ago.
Erik Trenouth
It’ll be more than $20,000, since he would have been claimed by another team, who would have had to pay $20,000 to get him. Oakland, with the best record in baseball, would be last in the waiver claiming, so they would have had to pay up in order to get him.
thegoldenone
Will he ever make it to the bigs or forever remain on deck.

Was hoping that they would maybe get Jim Johnson out of it. If he figures it out again he would be a nice addition to the bullpen.

Remember when the A’s acquired Jesse Chavez from the Jays and now Chavez is amazing. Who knows? Deck McGuire might turn out the same. Kind of feel sorry for the Jays they could have had selected Chris Sale at #11 but he went #13 to the white sox
Dock_Elvis
I remember at the time, Sale was thought of as a stretch.
